    I don't know if this is my absolute favorite piece of music of all time. But I can't think of anything I like better.

    Great playing! Beethoven is the man, writing this beautiful music for you three to play 200 years later. Thank you Universe for Beethoven, Trio Cleonice and thank you for instrument makers.

    I'm usually super-critical of a piece that I've studied. This is quite a perfect performance!

    Just perfect.
    I like very much the baby in the audience having his/her say about the performance towards at the end of the first movement (14:45).
    I agree about sharing the pleasure of music with the little loved ones, even at the risk of making a few highbrows rolling their eyes.

    Cette très belle interprétation du n°2 de l'op 70 me ravit littéralement et reste à la hauteur du Trio Baremboim/du Pré/Zukerman dans le Trio n°1 de même opus .C'est merveilleux mais très différent du Trio n°1 de l'op l'Op. 3, très gai aussi mais plus Mozartien.Merci au NEC.

    The last movement (especially) reminds me of Schubert for some reason. Am I the only one?

    • @wildh0rse1
      @wildh0rse1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jawnps See my comment above... the Third movement is absolutely one of the best single movements LVB wrote, up there with the 1st movement of Eroica and the 1st movement of Sym. #5. I'll listen to some more Schubert, you piqued my interest.

      @@wildh0rse1 The third movement incorporates material from LvB's Opus 26, opening theme and variations movement, to which Schubert alluded pretty clearly in one of his Impromptu No. 2 in A-flat major from the D. 935/Opus 142 set. [Edited because I accidentally said D. 899/Op. 90 #3, the G-flat major-I write this Christmas Day 2020, and clearly the year has taken its toll.]

    This, along with the Archduke, is my favorite of the Beethoven trios. I am an amateur pianist and I have played this work. I can assure you that it is no mean feat. This pianist is absolutely marvelous, as are the string players.
    I will, however, mention one quibble. The second movement is too fast for my taste. Yes, I know it's Allegretto, but listen to the Beaux-Arts Trio or Stern, Rose and Istomin. Their tempos are similar and quite a bit slower than the tempo taken here. At the faster pace, for me, it loses its charm.

    • @donaldallen1771
      @donaldallen1771 ปีที่แล้ว

      But I should have added that the last movement tempo feels just right -- wonderful. And I can say from experience that Emely Phelps makes the piano part look easy. It is anything but.

  • @wildh0rse1
    @wildh0rse1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Op 70 trios are, IMO, the absolute purity and refinement of the string trio form itself, at the time. Don;t forget LVB played ALL THREE of these instruments, and well. He was an orchestral Violist! How cool is that.
    But this performance left me flat, sorry. And I don't mean E Flat. The dynamics are all wrong in the last movement. The tempo throughout is too hurried, again especially the thrird movement. Great players, too, all three very talented. Around 29:00 is a good example of how hurrying the tempo ruins the run up to the finale. Feel it, kids, FEEL it, that;s something you're born with and they can't teach you at NEC. It's called "talent". :)

      +wildh0rse1 I agree with everything you say about FEELING music & am glad to have found a similar soul. But, without any bad feelings or intentions, my brother, I disagree with You in this particular case. The interpretation is coherent and beautiful. If we wish to feel the/an interpretation, we ought to forget everything we know about the previous ones (or the work itself, to be radical; even to forget our own ego and existance). I find the whole interpretation beautiful & enjoy it very much.

    • @joefiddleski

      29:00? Couldn't disagree more. There was a tiny little problem with ensemble right before there but I don't think tempo was the issue.
