I read that this was the last public performance of Beethoven where, of course, he was playing the piano. The performance had to stop as he could not keep pace with the other soloists. And, again, of course it was when his deafness had finally overcome him. Saying that, this piece has a special place in my heart. It expresses the character of Beethoven in every way. There is so much in this piece that just demands to be returned to again and again and again.

I once heard this in a chamber festival in a church in Umeå, Sweden, it was early summer, the sun was still there even if it was late, and afterwards I was so happy! One of my lifes most memorable music moments.

    What a delight!
This performance captures the very essence of chamber music, of its profound intimacy. Beethoven´s "Archduke" caresses both the ear and the soul. There is no drama, no conflicts, no sharp edges as in most of his other superb compositions, just wit, joy, musical poetry and celestial beauty. I am overwhelmed and thankful.

One of the most beautiful things in chamber music is the "sign language" between the participants. Here they express so vividly this wonderful style of communication!

I agree. I love this piece, and many look upon the Zukerman, Barenboim, DuPre performance as being the definitive performance. However, I prefer this one, which for me is the best I have hard. They capture the soul of Beethoven, clearly enjoy what they play with a passion, and their timing and emphasis is immaculate.

I don't believe I've been hiding under a rock for the last decade or two, yet I have not encountered this group of players until now. The cellist is the greatest cellist I'd not heard of, yet I don't intend that to detract from the quality of the playing of the other two performers or of the whole group. I experienced the performance as stunning, and I don't think any of the old favourites are superior (eg Beaux Arts). Because of the high quality of the recording, it will be my go to from now on. For me, it captures fully the innate beauty of this compositional masterpiece, which has been for many years one of my favourite pieces of all music. Unlike one previous commentator I tend to prefer live (and therefore unedited and integral) performances over studio versions.

I hold this to be one of the best clues to classical music, this theme Andante Cantabile at 20:05, a simple melody, or theme, that then developes into something so much more, leading to a deeper understanding of the initial thoughts of this work. For me it was a revelation when I the first time heard this musik IRL, long ago. And this fascination still is my companion.

Each of them is so involved in making their own part a whole together with their partners! And the phrase starting around 30:00 is so touching! Wish I could hear a studio recording of this trio; they are exceptional musicians and the quality of this performance is limited by the acoustics of the auditorium.

As a musician and sound engineer, I hear nothing wrong with the acoustics on this recording. I'll bet if you change your focus from the sound to the composition itself and the marvelous playing of these fine musicians (goose-bumps at the end!), you'll be drawn into the joy and emotion of the music and will completely forget about any mundane considerations such as the acoustics of the recorded sound.

@@bensolomon1872 maybe they're referring to the sounds of people moving in the background? Occasionally you hear that

Since we're all here because of Murakami: I kind of felt like this was minor weak point of the novel. Having the high school dropout trucker character go watch New Wave French cinema and discuss obscure classical music in a coffee shop, seemingly for no reason? Seemed like Murakami was having a pretentious wank. I get that Hoshino needed something to cause him to contemplate things and come to a realization about his life, but doing it this way seemed forced and out of nowhere. And not in the fun sort of "out of nowhere" that makes Murakami's stories so great. No, this was just kinda silly. Still a great book.

I feel that way too. But at the end of the day hes just sharing something he really loves to his readers. If he mentions other forms of art in his work, he must really love it and wants us to hear it too
