  • Does lure size matter ? Winter Pike fishing ! Small pike on big lures and big pike on small lures!? Whats more effective ?
A day session with my Dad lure fishing on the Leeds to Liverpool Canal at Burscough and part of the Rufford Stretch.
The lures used in todays session where the #foxrage spikey shad and the #rapala X - Peto - 14cm slow sinking lure - colour - Live Rainbow trout.
Those #advanta Rods really do pack a punch for the money.
Enjoyable days fishing with some nice pike caught 🐊
Grab a brew or a beer and enjoy the session!

as a pike angler, i say size of the lures do matter.
    Pros and Cons for sizes:
    Big Lures (20cm+)
Pro - It is indeed massive and heavy lure, usually target big pikes over 12lb.
Best Chance to catch big ones.
Con - Won't catch much pike as the lure is maybe too big for smaller pikes
    Medium Lures (9cm-19cm)
Pro - Probably the most favourite size for most pike anglers, for pike of any size.
It is possible to catch a really massive Perch on these medium lures.
Con - ibh idk if there is any con for medium size lures
    Small Lures (under 8cm)
Pro - Some big Pike can be smart knowing they are being targeted by pike anglers with massive lures, usually chase much small lures to feed.
    lots of catching for jacks
Con - easy to lose the lure when snagged up with low breaking strain.
Correct me if im wrong, but this is my experience with these lures.

The Late Mr John Wilson used "Sink & Draw" with a nose loaded sprat or dead roach, maybe because it imitated an injured fish, (easy prey) more than a Lure. Think he also put a slight kink in the bait too, for a bit of vibration?

Nice video mate. I pike fish alot. Ive had 3lb pike on 26cm rapala xrap otus. Mainly at start of season while water is warmer. I had a 10lb pike on 20mm perch shad at start off season too. Usually find as the season goes on and it gets colder the bigger lures will catch the larger pike but as matey says u will blank alot more. Also the last hour of the day into the first hour of dark seems to work for me. Live baiting with a feeder rod is an awesome method for catching on the river also. Never blanked using this method. 3oz weight to a buffer bead then the trace thrown in a slack on the river.. never fails. Good luck for the rest of the season

Recently, I've put down the baitcasting rod and have brought out the light spinning rod (3-15g). I find it more fun as I can cover a range of species and not get fatigued. I love the finesse side of lure fishing. That one rod has caught me a variety of fish from, Perch, Pike, Zander, roach, bream , gudgeon, chub, mackeral, bass, squid

Just new to lure fishing but we don't have canals up in the North east you southerners are lucky as once out of Durham from tyneside its the south😂your having more luck than me got a 6.6 shimano stc fast action mh 14 to 42g just a cheapo kastking till decide and got shimano stc 2.70 or 3m heavy 20 to 60g I paired that with shimano ultegra 3000 cast better with it but loving baitcasters looking for decent reel now upto 200,250 at push looked at shimano stx dc and daiwa tabula 300 but any info on decent baitcaster reel be great got 2 ugly stick gx travel rods had years there 5 to 15g just need 0.5 to 5g now to do all-round lures ps,it's alot harder when I'm same age as westy senior 😂but seems fun mixed with my feeder fishing which I can get bored seems more exiting lure fishing
