    Much as I like the R1 D2 there would be something pretty cool about having an R2 D2 knife. Just as long as C3PO didn’t try and borrow it all the time.

    I’ve been a carpenter for 40 years, I cut stuff. To me knives are tools, not fondling art. My rat 1 and rat2 are my pocket knives because they cut great and are comfortable in both my pocket and my hands. I bought some other knives to carry, more expensive ones, but I’ve found though my own use that the rats are the best and for the price.....I won’t cry when I lose it.

    I absolutely love mine. My blade is centered all the way down. It throws a very good fire ball from my ferro. rod and that’s a big plus for me. Extremely sharp straight out from the box but I went the extra mile and stropped it.

  • @ea6871
    @ea6871 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I watched this video after I got one oops. After unboxing mine I immediately ordered another one lol. Mine is centered all the way down and whips out like bamn. I think it has decent bushings. The blade is also well balanced and locks up great. The ergo's are great for me no issues. From scales to bladeI I work outdoors and do allot of work with pvc and and other plastics. Sometimes retro fitting stuff. The blade design on this is really good for medium to fine work. I really like D2 over aus8. It doesn't feel like it's going to come loose over time in regards to blade. Seems like a solid construction. The spine is pretty serious too it's begging for a ferro rod. I didn''t consider it as a defensive blade #1 liner lock #2 blade shape. I do love that it's s flat grind even better. The scales are attractive enough for being cheap and the clip rocks. I also like the weight of it for working when cutting at angles. I hesitated on the aus8 but the d2 made this an exceptional value and what's grown to be a classic design. My heavy duty and defensive blade is a Cold Steel Voyager XL tanto which is also on board every day. This Rat definitely makes me still want to have a primary defensive blade. Although it may work in a pinch I trust my life to the cold steel especially the tri-ad system.
    I enjoyed your review thanks for your hard work!

    I find the reason ontario can sell knives so cheap is because they run them down the assembly line pretty fast. Not really fussing about fit and finish too much. But i find they pay attention to the important things though. I bought 3 rat 1’s in d2 at the same time. All different colours. And they were all a little different in the fit and finish area. But they all worked great. Had to loosen the pivot on one just a bit. But that was all. Love my rat.

    I don't see how anyone can complain about a rat 1 for EDC. I don't hardly even notice it when clipped to the top of my pocket yet I guess a rat 2 would definitely not be noticable at all I guess. I love my rat 1.

    • @jackle842000
      @jackle842000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Phaminator525 I just have the AUS 8 which seems to work great. The heat treat is good and seems to hold an edge really good. I contemplated on a d2 but the aus 8 was so much cheaper and comparisons between the two seemed to show the aus 8 was also really good due to their good heat treat. Seems great for an edc to me but most people that live in the city and have barely any use for a knife at all may prefer the smaller one I guess? The AUS 8 is a great knife and I'm sure the d2 is as well. Aus 8 is more resistant to corrosion as well and since it holds an edge decently and is easier to sharpen plus cheaper I just went with that. D2 you'd have to have diamond to sharpen probably and I'm use to mirror polished edges which is going to be really hard to obtain with that hard of a steel I imagine but haven't tried it personally. Even the Aus 8 seems to be hard enough my regular Dick brand meet packing knife steel don't work as easily on it as other knives I have.

    • @Phaminator525
      @Phaminator525 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jackle842000 no I totally agree with you on the softer steels. I have r2 d2 and I cant stand sharpening it. I'd much rather have something easier to sharpen. Even my 940 s30v steel is easier to sharpen than my r2d2. Edge retention isnt really worth it for me since I work it so hard at my job that even if it was my 940 it would dull within a few days. So d2 is kinda useless to me and I realized I shouldve went with a aus 8 for a beater knife.

    A little late but I just ordered mine, it was a real struggle to choose one between this one and the cutjack, but at the end I believe there are better reviews on the R1D2.

    • @cbwelch4
      @cbwelch4 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve heard mixed reviews by some with the D2 on the Cutjack. Some have said they didn’t get the treat right and it is a bit soft and the edge retention isn’t what it should be. It is a better looking knife for sure. What I like about the RAT is the dual liners. It is a tank. And the ergos are spot on. The R2D2 is a better carry size, BUT they just scaled it down 80% rather than keep the ergos of its Daddy. If you don’t have small hands it doesn’t really fit that great. Why I can’t get one. Handling it was a disappointment. The RAT-1 fits me perfectly. They should have redesigned the RAT-2 instead of scaling it down on a CAD machine keeping the same proportions. A damned shame considering the thought they clearly put into the RAT-1. I’d have one if they did.

    There's one in my pocket right now. It's a nice knife, inexpensive as well. The D2 does corrode rather easily. I have a good sized folder collection, and it fits into my rotation along with knives like an endura, a shamann, and a Cold Steel Lawman. All more expensive blades. I also have a RAT 2 that locks up late and has some blade play.

      The Tenacious is surprisingly good. I didn't give it near enough respect when I got one, coming down to it from PM2, PM3, Military, and Manix. For being the cheap Chinese Spyderco, it's still a good lil knife. Not great steel, but nicely designed and has the Spyderco heritage that I love.

    I've bought 2 RAT 1's and 2 RAT 2's. One of each model was as perfect as can be expected and the other 2 were a bit sloppy. My sloppy RAT2 has the same issues as yours with the blade. My sloppy RAT 1 had to be returned as the cutting edge of the blade was warped like a bad 2x4. If you flipped the blade up and looked down at it it was all sorts of curves. The 2 that were perfect and the 1 that was acceptable have all performed flawlessly for over 2 years now and I absolutely love them.

    I bought mine at a bass pro shop about 8yrs ago for 29 dollars American. Of course mines the aus 8 version but it doesn’t change the fact that I probably won’t ever buy another knife. I can’t justify spending $100 plus dollars on something I’ll be afraid to use, and I’ve used mine for almost everything imaginable. Every scratch, and every dent tell a story of how this seemingly cheap pocket knife has gotten me out of trouble. My only complaint is that it isn’t made in America. Great review, and yes the legends are true.

    I open beer bottles with my rat 1. The teeth of the cap digs into my plastic a bit but I don’t care cause it’s $40 and I have another one in my drawer waiting for the day I lose it. There is nothing wrong with Nylon. It’s an extremely reliable and durable material - G10 is not a “better” material in my opinion. Maybe some better grip - but it’s not a problem with the rat 1

    3 years later... I had the aus8 first. ThenI bought the d2 . You payed 37...I payed 38 my number is 349 out of 800. The only issue I don't like with my knife is the handle is too smooth. Other than that.this knife will do what I need it to do yea, I fail to also mention. I cut rope, open mail, cut veggies do daily things with this and it does it flawlessly. Absolutely I'd love a 850.00 folder, but it wouldn't do what I do with this knife to an expensive knife. I'll also say. That 850 knife might not be honestly any better. I'm going to give an example with the few fixed blades that I have left... Both my dogs got porcupined withing a week from each other and I needed money fast to have them surgically removed which was costly so I pawned most my knives to pay for that . But I digress....I still have my bravo 1 lt with desert ironwood burl in 3v. And my bushcraft black.....you guessed it. I use my mora more often when I'm out in the woods... My point is.....inexpensive knives are excellent, and by all means do not suck

    If your goal is to oogle a knife or play with it, then spend the money. If you’re buying a knife to do knife things, you can’t spend your money better. Pretty it ain’t, but rugged and useful it is. It will do the same functions you bought your $500 Sibenza to do at less than 1/10th the cost and you won’t feel bad about beating it up, which it can take. I love mine and only have two small gripes. The scales are not grippy enough, but this is mitigated by the awesome ergos that lock your hand in place and the RAT-1fits my hand perfectly. The 2nd is that it is a tad heavy for what it is, but still fits my pocket well and isn’t a deal breaker. A great design and hard to beat for the money.

      I love the rat. I also love my XM-18 user. Both bring me joy in different ways, and both get used hard. At the end of the day, we all like what we like for whatever reason we want. There is no right or wrong.

    • @cbwelch4
      @cbwelch4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@metal_complex I’d love an XM-18. But will not spend more than I’d spend on an AD-15 or thereabouts. You get that for which you pay but once you get beyond $2-300, you reach a place of diminishing returns on your money IMO. I’ve had my eyes on a Ritter Hogue lately. Perhaps a Native Chief, but I won’t spend beyond that. That’s just me but the joy of Capitalism is spending one’s money as it suits you. For me, all my equipment is specific to a job, e.g. work knife, bird and trout knife, skinning knife, multi tool, etc.

      @@cbwelch4 if all you want from the object is utility then ya.
      This is the part a lot of people refuse to try to understand:
      Is the XM 18 $225 better than the AD-15? No. Do I LIKE it $225 more? You bet. They're both knives. They both cut. They're both durable. The XM (to me) feels nicer in the hand, and has the tri way pivot, which I love. It's more customizable, and has an aesthetic I prefer. It's made in the US, and I like that. (So is the REAL Demko AD-15, but I assume we're comparing with the CS variant) - Is that all worth the extra money to me? You bet. I don't care if they perform roughly the same. I'm an enthusiast. Ive said this a billion times - I dont just buy knives because they cut. I buy what I like because I like it. There's simply no arguing around it. This train is gonna keep on going down the same track it's always been on.
