    Got my mine about 6 years ago, still going strong. Like all of us I'm always looking at other knives but can never justify switching. By the way, I put off buying it at first b/c of its looks, but over time it grew on me like an ugly dog with a great personality, lol.

      😂 Well said. Definitely an ugly dog with a great personality. I love mine. I've got the RAT 1 in D2, and two RAT 2's in D2 and AUS-8. I'm turning into a cat lady with these things.

      The Rat 2 D2 is my only folding knife now it's my EDC. I collect fixed blades not folders. I had and sold my spyderco para military 2 once I started using the Rat 2 D2. Don't get me wrong my Spyderco was a better knife absolutely. But once I picked up a rat 2 d2. I realized how OVER PRICED and and over hyped spyderco was. I paid $199.99 for my para military 2 and I've got to tell you the price isn't justified. It barley held an edge longer than my Rat 2 D2 and yes it had g10 scales and had s30v steel and was a better looking knife. But $160.00 more expensive better? I'm sorry no. The Rat 2 made me despise my Spyderco simply because of the difference in price. I felt taken advantage of.

    I like your casual review style, real no bs info and overview, some of the other big channels go on whining about useless things and fail to mention some basic elements of a knife

    I bought this knife because I lost my Benchmade Mini Griptillian, yes I cried for days on end. It was a D2 steel when D2 was all the rage. I had my Mini for atleast 12 years, my wife bought it for me as an anniversary present. The free sharpening really drew me to it, I’m the worlds worst at sharpening a blade and D2 is already a hard steel. Every time I would send it to Benchmade it would comeback razor sharp and with a new clip, new screws, a new pocket clip, everything. Finally I’ll get to my point, the only downside to sending your knife to Oregon or Idaho, wherever they are, from Arkansas is the 2-3 week turn around. I needed a decent blade to carry for during that time. I tried several and finally found the R2D2. It’s a wise investment! It won’t let you down if you are any good at sharpening. Don’t think your saving money if you get the AUS8. It will sharpen faster but you’ll sharpen it more often. Spend the $8-12 and get the D2. You won’t regret it!

    I just got my first Rat 2 and I am very impressed! It is an amazing. knife for the price. I can see clearly why it is one of the best selling budget EDC knives on the market. I am so impressed with my R2D2 that I will probably purchase another one!

    I had the AUS 8 version as a work knife but when the D2 came out I bought a tan/black one and put it into EDC rotation. I was so pleased with it I bought a bunch and gave them out for Christmas this last year. Admit some were the AUS 8 but they were for those not into knives and just learning to sharpen. It's a good choice. I have a lot more expensive knives but this one still finds it way into my pocket quite often.

    The Ontario RAT II (like the RAT 1) has a great feel in the hand; a sturdy knife with a bold sound when opened. That sound and the solid lockup gives me confidence when I use the knife. It’s often my choice whenever I have a tough, dirty job. And since it pivots on washers it’s less susceptible to grit and grime than bearing designs. I really like the knife.

    I learned the hard way over time, for pocket knife, Full Flat Grind is always my choice. Wish I had known before buying so many wrong blade shapes/grinds. It slices thru materials so much better than thicker, half beveled blades. Its a great chopper /slicer for foods. Cuts cardboard the best, cuts rope great, just a great choice for pocketknives. Use those thick non full falt grind knives for prying and stuff these days! Ha ha! (I rarely use them) For a large knife FFG its not usually my go to, but can it can be, for a machete or something. RAT2 from Ontario is a great carry knife! Especially in D2 . Very nice review!

    I would say, that my Rat2 D2 is my most carried EDC. It is awesome. I have many knives way more expensive, but most days you will find my Rat2 in my pocket. It's not expensive, so if you scratch it, or lose it, you aren't out a ton of cash, and yet, it performs spectacularly. Comfortable in hand, and very slicy. Well built, and D2 is a great steel. Not a supper steel, but still..it holds an edge pretty long.

    Excellent review except for ONE aspect---
    The RAT line of Ontario folding knives are ANYTHING BUT "beater" knives, Which is a pejorative, in this case.
    A "beater" knife is something that you buy at a gas station on one of those spinning displays by the door, for 10 or 15 bucks, that you literally would throw in your toolbox or pickup truck console and never sharpen because it's impossible without a benchtop belt grinder.
    This is a quality knife that does not deserve the degrading pejorative of "beater."

    I never wanted to love a knife more. I'm a recent budget knife afficionado. The RAT2 was hyped on several youtube channels as the best thing since sliced bread. At the best, was a let down.i cushion that by saying I probably woulda loved the knife if I didn't have some others I really love. It has good steel and overall construction, but thats where it ends for me. It'll end up in my car as a beater. I like the look, the thinness and construction but it is far from a one hand intuitive knife like my other flippers that I thoroughly enjoy. This one takes some finess and smaller hand apparently. The clip is short and SUPER stiff. I got frustrated taking it out and putting in my pocket it was so tight. I was doing a project and basically just kept in fully in my pocket til my next use. It feels like itll wear out the jean material as well if i used this one a lot. For a budget friendly knife I'll buy other models of the Honeybadger or anything by Ganzo. The Ganzo Firebird FH91AND 41 in D2 with amazing flip action is $25 to $30 currently!!! Both Cheaper and more fun than this.

    Mine will be here today! I went with the Aus8 version. Ontario does their aus8 very well. Haven't heard a whole lot of good things about the D2 steel on the rats. Chip issues and toothing. Plus I want to be able to sharpen quickly and razor sharp! I've never had issues with Aus8. Always been good to me. Can't wait to finally own a rat. Then just waiting on my 2 civivis to arrive!

    Nice affordable EDC with a great steel. A have a few woodcarving knives (Queen Cutlery -Ross Oar carving knives) in D2. Love the steel once I learned to sharpen it. As for the Ontario Rat 2 D2, I may end up purchasing one as a beater. Hard to take my Lionsteel Roundhead out for nasty work. I have many knives, but more is often better!

    • @georgemorley1029
      @georgemorley1029 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a good reason to carry it, I suggest you carry it. If you’re asked by the police why you’re carrying it, tell them. That’s permitted within the law. As long as you don’t flash it around or use it as a weapon, you’re well within your rights to do that. I will carry a UKPK everyday for that reason as a come in handy knife but if I go hiking or camping, I’d take one of these and make sure that if asked, that would the reason I would give. It’s a tool ultimately. It’s just on you not to be a tool too! 👍🏻

    I've resisted too ... I may pull the trigger now ... Love the OD Green too ... I live in Florida but I guess the D2 will work down here in the salt air ... Or should I get the standard Aus8 for this part of the world ... Any advice ?

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tough call. Ive seen stainless steels like s35vn develop minor oxidation here in Kansas over time, so I feel like Florida wouldn't treat D2 well. That all depends on how often you oil it, and what you're using it for. AUS 8 might be better for low maintenance IMO, but D2 wouldn't be the worst choice in the world.

    I have to disagree with your assessment of this model. Mine is one of the worse budget folders I have ever bought, centering is off, pocket clip screws work loose (and had to be LocTited to stay tight), pivot works loose, and it develops blade play and certering goes right off and you can't tighten it up too tight otherwise you can't deploy the blade one handed. Mine also has a little bit of lock stick. Handle geometry is off for me (I have XXL sized hands) and it feels as though my hand is too far back on the handle when I use a saber grip. The only thing I actually like about my Rat II is the Aus-8 steel, not a bad budget steel.
    I would happily put the likes of my Real E801 Megalodon up against it as it has zero issues and is a far better product.(and looking at pricing I can get a Rat II for AUD$68, my E-801 cost AUD$70, I am an Aussie so pricing is going to be different to you in the US), fits my hand so much better/better handle ergo's, smooth/snappy flipping action, centered, no blade play or lock stick, doesn't loosen up (pivot or pocket clip), great flat grind that is quite slicy, 14c28n steel is as good or better than Aus-8 steel and is one of the best budget stainless steels available at the moment.

    • @PerceptionVsReality333

      Did you ever disassemble the knife? I discovered that you have to perfectly align the washers or else it'll have blade play & the blade will be off center.

      That's not typically normal for this knife. One of the great things about the R2-D2 is the action because of the geometry of the blade to the handle and detent. It should open almost like an automatic.
      If yours doesn't, maybe check the pivot tightness.

      @pteronarcyscalifornica694 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm looking for an outdoor (i.e., hiking, camping) knife that can stand up to some hard use. Unfortunately, the Swordfish and Paladin have blades in excess of 3.0 inches, and such blades put me at some risk of legal liability should I happen to commit a felony while in possession of one (something I'm not worried about) or should I be deemed to be carrying it furtively with intent to conceal (something that does concern me). Also, both knives have blades in excess of 3.5 inches, which makes them banned in nearby Seattle, regardless of how they are carried.
      I've been eyeing the Beluga, which I can pocket carry without worrying about violating state law. Is it worth 33% for than the RAT 2?

    • @PerceptionVsReality333

    If you're going to have a knife review channel pop for 1) a ruler; 2) a digital caliper & 3) digital scale so that you can provide ACCURATE measurements & not estimate. Very AMATEURISH and UNPROFESSIONAL! 👎

      Robert, this is a very old video. I've got nearly 600 uploads. All the equipment you've listed is currently being used during reviews. Take two seconds to look at the date on the video, and a recent channel upload before you post stuff like this so you don't look like a complete dumbass.
