    You are using a type 27 guard with type 1 wheels. That is why you are using washers are shims. You need to swap out the guard to a type 1 guard to use type 1 blades. Once you do that you will be a lot safer and you don't need to use any washers as shims

    The first thing imma use my angle grinder for is to cut my cars aftermarket plastic sideskirts shorter. I bought a metal cutting wheel... I think it might have been overkill but i might need it in the future. Wish I had a garage. Really sucks to be doing projects in my apt living room. But anyways thanks for the info

    Thank you for this, I am also a newbie, using a cutting wheel and couldn’t get the disc to not spin, the directions of the tool indicated one way only to use the arbor nut but since it was thin it would spin, flipped it over and tight and ready to rock. Just got to keep the fingers intact now or the wife will kill me.

    I'm new to angle grinders, so the video was very helpful to me. Thank you! Edit: At 4:26 you take what looks like a common flat washer, and call it a shim. You put it under the usual shim that has the square recessed notches on one side, which transfers the spin of the arbor to the wheel. Two questions for anyone who knows angle grinders: [1] Where does one get that "flat washer" shim? (The hole in an SAE 5/8" washer is actually too large.) [2] A flat washer-like shim does not have the recessed notches that lock in, so what keeps the cutting/grinding disk from slowing down or failing to spin properly?

    • @gregjackson6529
      @gregjackson6529 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking the same thing and also a new user. I'm guessing there must be an adapter available just for this purpose. Otherwise a flat washer could be modified with groves or nothes using the angle grinder [I think].

    • @timrich6755
      @timrich6755 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't. Adding a shim to move the wheel down is not necessary. This is the first time that I've seen someone think it is necessary or desirable.
      That said, you can purchase a spacer if you measure the shaft diameter. But the fact that you cannot find "grinder spacer" should cause you to wonder about the necessity, given the fact that there are hundreds of millions of the grinders in use worldwide.
      Conversely, if you deem them the next most popular addition to the grinder, setup your tooling and mass produce them.

    • @newwb
      @newwb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably figured this out by now, but that unthreaded washer he calls a shim comes with every grinder you buy.

    • @tamaica7770
      @tamaica7770 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timrich6755 same question! Do i need the washer that he called a shim at the 4:26?

    • @tegimr
      @tegimr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tamaica7770 Why do you think you need it? Does something not work? I've never needed to add a washer/spacer to my grinders, or any that I've used.
      Remember: safety first. Use equipment modifications engineered for the grinder you're using.

    Can u fit 100mm disc to a 125mm grinder

  • @catw6274
    @catw6274 ปีที่แล้ว

    My arbor nut keeps spinning off even though I hold down the spindle lock and use the tool to tighten it. Scares me to death. I was using a diamond cutting wheel on a 3"x .25" piece of marble with only the two nuts (above and below the blade) the tool came with. Is it simply not tight enough? They aren't supposed to unscrew as the blade turns.

    • @robdamico5304
      @robdamico5304  ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the orientation of the bottom spacer and the nut. Typically you want the bottom spacer to have the raised rim facing out from the tool (registering the hole in your wheel on center). Then make sure the nut has the raised rim also facing out away from the disc. There should be a slight depression on one side of the nut to avoid bottoming out on your bottom spacer and bypassing the disc. Diamond wheels tend to be thin, and I suppose it is possible for a no-name import grinder to not have enough clearance to bite down on the disc, but I’d be very surprised if that was the case. Bottom line: any disc you put on the grinder should only spin with the tool’s arbor when properly installed. And yes, it should only get tighter as the tool engages the work. If the disk is rattling free while in use, something is not right and you will need to sort it out before using it safely.

    Does that wrench have any use at all or is it just there to take up space? Thanks for the video.

  • @radoballfc2038
    @radoballfc2038 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought a cutting wheel and it came with 2 washers. Not sure if I need them, they seem redundant as the wheel size fits snug with the size of my arbor. Any thoughts ?

    • @robdamico5304
      @robdamico5304  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They might be spacers to fit different size arbors than yours. The inner rim of the wheel should fit a feature on your arbor nut or the existing spacer that came with the grinder. It shouldn't ride directly on the threads of the arbor. If it fits snug and runs without vibration, you are probably good to go. Just be sure to wear your safety gear. I always wear a face shield when using a cutoff wheel on a grinder. They have a tendency to shatter if you run them wrong, so keep that guard on and stay safe!
