I remember getting a Tortie cat when I was 17.
I already had 2 Siamese cats and a German Shepherd. I took cat to a vet to have it checked out. Cat was fine and the vet politely asked me how long I had cat. I told him a couple of days.
He wanted to know if I had bonded with it. He had lost his male Tortie and actually shed a tear when he saw mine. He asked if I would sell cat after he told me about losing his tortie. I gave him the cat and he couldn't believe I would do that, saying that He would give my Siamese cats vet care and asked me to bring them in for a check up and free shots. After a few months he gave me a call and told me his mother had passed and that the Tortie was for her while she was on her last months with cancer.
He again thanked me and loved the Tortie for making his mother happy.
Apparently his mom had always had Torties.😢

When I first started being a cat mom, I decided to only adopt black cats. They are usually the last to be adopted and have great dispositions. Four months after my first cat Jade died, my husband suggested getting a kitten to help heal my broken heart. The head of the rescue I had volunteered with for awhile had a thing for Torties. He had several black kittens for me to see. I had the girl in mind but she wasn’t interested (I tend to let them pick me). I was sitting on the floor and this tiny Tortie crawled into my lap, looked up at me with these lovey dovey eyes and proceeded to fall asleep. Love at first sight for both of us. Elektra is 15 now. She’s so loving and funny and vocal. I know all of her noises. When she wants to be picked up, she stands on her back legs on the counter and puts her paws on my shoulder. She still plays and chases shadows and makes me laugh every day. For years she crawled under the covers and slept on my chest. My 18 year old polydactyl black cat Nora was always aloof, but has taken over my chest at night. I feel so blessed to have such loving cats. I refer to Elektra as my heart. I always tell her, she needs to live forever. I can’t even fathom the void in my world when it’s her time to go to the Rainbow Bridge.

I can't help but to feel some definite emotion while watching this video. The reason why is fairly simply. I had tortoishell cat (Identical to the one on screen at 1:30) for nearly 16 years. I watched her birth (Sister's cat had a litter in one the dresser drawers-of all places) and were each other's company for nearly every day for all those years. Through all the affectionate moments to the tortoishell ones, I never lost my love for her. Having grown up with her, I was absolutely heartbroken when her health began to quickly deteriorate and had to be put down. 😣😢Being there with her while saying my final goodbyes was one of the absolute worse experiences I ever had to go through. I didn't want to let go. 😓

We lost our Junie in the beginning of July last year, a week shy of her 12th bday. One day she was fine, then the next she was listless. Sadly we found out she had kidney disease w/anemia. Two weeks later, I held her as the vet put her down. Was one the hardest things I had to do, but I did it for her.
Yes, they definitely have that attitude! She hated us when we first got her as a kitten, and it took a couple years for her to finally trust us. Towards the end, she was a total cuddle bug and would even perch on my shoulder to snuggle.
If you just have patience with them, you'll see that they are very sweet and loving cats.

That sounds more like a classic tabby, not a torbie. Torbies have a mottled appearance, and don't tend to have defined patterns, such as the solid black "ink blot" swirls, which is characteristic of a regular classic tabby. In a brown classic tabby, thick black bands swirl with brown, which sometimes appears to be an orange-ish color, but it's not true orange.
Usually a male torbie/tortie/calico would have genetic defects, so if your cat is generally healthy, it's probably not a male torbie.

I have a dilute tort, she’s gray and cream. She definitely has tortitude. We were going to adopt her cage mate, but she kept getting in the way of interacting with the other cat and trying to get us to pet her instead. So we had to take them both! Now we have a chill, goofy black cat, and a rambunctious, opinionated tort. I guess with the good/bad luck it kind of evens out. 🤣

I’ve rescued 3 different torties and I will say they are generally more vocal, more outgoing and smarter than most other cats I’ve been around. The one I have now is practically a small dog. I can instruct her to go pretty much anywhere I want her to, she’s great at opening doors, she plays catch. After owning a few of them idk if I would ever get any other type of cat. Once you get to know them they’re the most loving and compassionate pets you will ever own. We tried bringing a tortie kitten in the house with our 8 year old torite a few years ago but the older one just wasn’t having it, with that said I tend to believe they also love their independence if they’re not used to sharing a space with other animals.

The first tortoiseshell cat I had was in the 80s. My ex husband and I were house sitting and cat sitting for my parents. One day their cat came home and meowed at us to follow her. Hidden in a corner on the porch was a thin tortoiseshell with her tail hanging on by only a piece of skin. Lucky (parents cat) looked back and forth between us and the cat and meowing like she was begging us to help her.
Well right then my ex and I decided to take the cat to the vet. She got a full exam, shots and her tail cut off with just a couple inches left. As soon as we saw her again to take her home we knew she was ours and her new name became Bobbie.
Bobbie ended up giving us 2 beautiful litters of kittens and grandkittens of various colors.
However several years later she passed away. We kept one of her grandsons who was an orange tabby. Sweet, adorable, adaptable. Loved anyone and anything. Indoor, outdoor or both. He didn't care. Just like his grandma. He passed away after 13 years.

I've had a tortie or some sort of calico in the house for the past 25 years, and they've ALL been just a little bit nuts.
Best cat I ever had was more like a dog. She'd follow me around, always come to me when I called, would whisper back if I said her name, and would constantly invade my lap space when I was on the computer. Another highlight of her life was laying on me, with SEVEN kittens rolling around inside her, WAY past due. It was like a mini earthquake sitting on my lap. Her two equally-bizarre tortie daughters are still with me, and I'm going to be adopting my sister's goofy black cat in a couple of weeks.

My family has had cats of all kinds for 30 years, but we recently adopted a tiny kitten with a tortoiseshell coat, the first we have ever had. We named her Cali, and she is without a doubt the smartest, sassiest, most spirited feline we have ever had! Highly intelligent and incorrigibly curious, Cali gets into EVERYTHING, earning her the nickname "Trouble." She has learned to turn on light switches, open door handles, activate sinks for a drink. She even figured out that her humans put their hands near the sliding glass door to open it to the outside. She often reaches for the handle of said door, even though she has absolutely no way of opening it! She is an adorable ball of wonder and spirit, and has made the last couple of years truly delightful.

My tortie has tortie-tude for sure! She always has to be with me and she tells me when its time to go to bed and when I need to get up. She lays on me in bed until I go to sleep too, so I don't sneak off to get on the computer. But she's also been a life saver for me. I am diabetic on insulin. If my blood sugar drops below normal, she will pester me to wake up and if I try to cover up to go back to sleep, she will get under the covers and try to make me understand its important. She's even bitten my fingers to rouse me and quickly jumps back. By then I realize what she's doing, so off to the kitchen we go. She's 14 now and she took over the blood sugar monitoring duties after another cat who did this passed away from old age. She also calls me "Ma" when she wants my attention LOL I love her and hope she will live a long life. I have 7 other cats of various colors, but only one tortie and she's brought me good luck.

Okay, as somebody who knows quite a bit about cat genetics, there are a few misconceptions here
    1. “Chimera Torties” are not actually chimeras at all. The cat that is most commonly seen when you search that up, is Venus, who has a half black half ginger face. This isn’t chimerism!! :O It’s actually just a coincidence of pattern, since tortoiseshells can have red and black splotes in any sizes and shapes.
    2. Tortoiseshells and Calicos are the same pattern! They are sometimes called different things, because “calicos” have more of the white spotting gene, which affects the spacing of the eumelanin (red) and the melanin (black), where tortoiseshells just have less of the white spotting gene :D hope you learned something!!!

My tortie is really affectionate, and not afraid to tell everyone what she thinks of them.

Had a torti/calico cat as a child. She was a little superstar. Was like a playmate. Always needed to be in amongst whatever was going on. Played fetch too. Sounds crazy but I still miss her smtimes 30yrs on!

We have one she’s 9 years old we called her Madam because she acts like one. Haha. Her mother is a siamese but we don’t who’s her father.

I've got a chimera tortoiseshell same yellow eyes I've had her for over eight years I wasn't looking for a cat when we found each other but, we did. She is the most unique cat I've ever seen or known. Even though the reason we found each other was unfortunate, I wouldn't change or trade the past eight years for anything in the world.

Our Tortie is the most vocal cat I've ever known, and I've had Siamese in my life, and as we know, those can talk your head off. This Tortie shares too much. Sometimes inaudible or a faint mouse-like squeak, sometimes just plain *yelling* .

I think my kitten is a torbie kind of tortie and she's a wild child. And now the kitten has a younger sister. One is patch and one is bridal I think. Parents were ginger (dad) and black/ white (mom). I'm not sure but another cat we have may be a torbie.

I rescued a tortie at 5 wks old. She is 7 yrs old now. Pure diva with a tortitude. Spoiled rotten. She has feline IBS. Purina FortiFlora saved her gut and made her happier. Love her to pieces. 💗🐾🐾💗
