I have a cat that looks mostly like a snowshoe. It's a male with 3 colors, white with mostly black spots, but also the brownish grey that some Siamese have. He has 3 colors, so is he also calico?

My Riley-girl was so beautiful, until a dog attacked her and damaged her spine so she had to have her tail removed. I kept her with me every minute of every day until she fully recovered. As part of her recovery, I took her to bed with me, so she slept next to me under the covers for the rest of her life. She was a lovely cat.

My Calico showed up around 7 years ago as a feral 6 month old on my back patio. She nows sleeps every night with me, has long conversations as she's very vocal and is the best and most affectionate cat I've had. They are truly unique animals with distinct personalities.
Yes they are. Had a torbie cat years ago. She was very feisty and it’s like she know she was special and acted accordingly

Best cat of my life was a calico. She lived 20 years passed away last year, and I still miss her.
(finishing up) She’s been gone for over 10 years now and I’ve still never seen a prettier cat. I was truly blessed in having her and because of her, I grew to love cats.
(first part) My first cat was a calico, which I only got because my boyfriend wanted a cat. We used to call her "the prettiest kitty in the whole world." She was a sweetheart, despite being so gorgeous and she later had 4 black and white babies, which I had thought was weird at the time.

Me and my wife found our Calico when she was less than 4 weeks on the street after a hurricane had hit our hometown. She was incredibly sick and the vet never thought she would make it out of it, he was wrong. I cannot tell you how lucky we are to have her in our lives, she’s literally like no other cat I’ve ever seen, she is loving, social, and VERY vocal. I’m the happiest cat dad because she is the best cat daughter!

My calico Painted Desert had a similar story. A good friend of our family found her when she stumbled onto his front porch, and he brought her to my mom since she was a vet tech. We cared for this tiny 2 week old kitten and took her to my mom's old workplace, where the vet there said that Painted Desert had feline leukemia, was stunted and blind, and wouldn't live a year. Well, she lived 7 years and finally died on Easter of 2021. She was perfectly sweet, would cuddle with you if you laid down, and always knew her way around. And she loved getting dressed up in her sweaters! I miss her so much, but I know that she's in a better place now. ❤️❤️❤️
I had a beautiful calico male cat who my family adopted when I was young. He was a sweet and affectionate boy. I didn’t realize how rare his patterning was until he was older, I found out through a top ten video like this one. RIP Ozzie.

I find it fascinating, it's like with orange cats most of those tend to be male and females are very rare. :D
@RedRoseSeptember22 But not nearly as rare as cali boys. Ginger girls are something like 20% while calico/tortie boys are like 1%.

Actually, the Beckoning cat is not from a woman who had a dream but in fact a monk had a calico cat who wondered off to find food. The cat waved to get the attention of a group of warriors who were about to cross a bridge, but the cat kept trying to get their attention and follow her. They finally followed her to their surprise; they watched the bridge get swept away. They then followed the cat back to the Monk and helped the poor Monk and honored this amazing cat who saved their lives. THIS is the real story.
Lol there is no “real” story. Another version says a cat only LOOKED like it was beckoning, then the emperor came to see it then lightning struck where he was before.
All of these stories were made up after the fact.

Mine doesn't like being picked up either. I adopted her after her human died and the woman's daughter didn't want her. My Aussie dog had died at the same time and I was extremely depressed. She wasn't doing well when I went to the shelter to see her. She's elderly, wasn't eating and would just lay in a corner curled up, facing the wall. But when I reached in and stroked her head, she rubbed her cheek on my hand and that was it. It's been almost 4 years now and she's my Velcro cat.
Hi Heather - my calico doesn’t like to be held either. I adopted her at 7 years old back in 2015. I think she was abused previously. Or something bad happened. She is abusive to the 11 week old kitten I got at the same time. Smacks her all the time. But she is very sweet, talkative when she wants something and she doesn’t like to cuddle & she will sleep on my thigh at night.
17 years ago i was at work (graveyard shift) when i saw a young calico cat walk by the front door. i went outside to see where it went and found her behind the building crying into the cold,foggy night air. i called to her and she came running up to me as if to say, "i'm saved!". she was about 4 months old and very sweet and timid. she must have been someone's baby who got out and was lost. i took her inside for the night and in the morning i couldn't just let her go,so i rode my bicycle home with her bundled in my coat. initially i called her lucky (not knowing about the lucky calico fact) because she was lucky i found her,but later decided that wasn't a good name for a girl,so i dropped the K and she became lucy. she is still with me and i hope to have her for at least a few more years. i have a short video of her as the introductory video on my channel if anyone would care to see her. it was taken the night i found her.
sad to report lucy passed away jan. 15th. she had been getting tumors on her abdomen for the last year. underwent 3 surgeries,but the cancer was so aggressive it kept returning. i'm heartbroken, but relieved she isn't suffering anymore. she was a brave fighter to the end. her ashes have joined my other two cats in my bedroom. all three together again. rest in peace my beautiful lucy.

I had a calico for 19 years (1991-2010), she was awesome, I still tear up every time think of her.
My calico baby Mia was born with a terminal illness sadly so I appreciate every single day that she’s alive. She’s made it 2.5 years and counting so far and as long as she shows no sign of suffering she doesn’t have to be put down. The vets are amazed she’s doing so well and they said she has no idea she has a terminal disease. don’t take your pets for granted and love them with your whole heart everyday❤❤

I had a tortie tabby - female. She was so lovely and affectionate - a great personality and much missed!
I too have a tortie tabby, 14 years young and extremely vocal. Definitely is my girl but will tolerate my husband (mostly at feed time😉🤣).
My tortoise shell cat was wonderful, gentle with kids, good mouser etc. She was also very vocal & expressive.
My tortie tabby was named Ripley. She was a divine cuddler. 💔😿

My diluted calico Sally adopted us to be her family. She moved in about 5 years ago and is a most loving, happy cat.
Mine is 13 and the friendliest cat I've ever met. When I brought her home, I had a space prepared and supplied to give her a safe spot until she was ready to come out. I was prepared for it to take hours or even days for her to feel comfortable.
She bolted out the second I opened her carrier and explored every foot of the house. Then hopped right up on my lap.

I had a much loved calico cat that found my BFF's metaststic breast cancer. Sadly I lost the beautiful kitty in January of 2017 and the BFF to her cancer in September of 2019. I am still looking for another lovely long haired calico!
I once had a calico named Bunny. She was so beautiful with long hair. I still miss her.

My calico was found under my neighbor's deck. She was a great cat. She just passed away in November at 20 years old. I miss her terribly. We just adopted another calico and she's a pistol.
On 12/2/2022 I had to have my 21 year old euthanized. My day completely collapsed. 21 years of good and bad times. She was there more often than any family member was. She passed away in my arms, as it should be. Calicos are the best.

We have a calico that we adopted as a stray kitten some months ago. I think she is the first cat we have that chirps when she plays. She carries her toy around like a dog!
KC graced our family with her presence for 19 wonderful years. She had two qualities which were amazing: whenever either of my daughters or their parents was either sick or feeling sad she was there for the duration. She had this intuitive sense to stay with the family member who wasn’t happy or out of sorts. She had a magical quality of empathy not seen very often in many pets. We all still miss her dearly!

I have a female calico domesticated medium-hair. I found her walking along the brush in the middle of a busy highway on May 9th of this year. In the late 90’s my Mom and I used to live in Jacksonville Florida with my aunt (her Sister) and she had a beautiful calico cat that was mostly black and had some spots of caramel color and her name was “Tiffy.” She was such a lovable little girl. I miss her!
I had a calico named pinecone because she was found abondoned in cartbord box in the woods. She was gentle very intuitive and smart. Unfortunately she got bone cances and we had to put her to sleep whens she was only 11 years old. Now I have two calicos first isnow 3 year old and was dumped in our neighbour backyard as a kitten. The neighbour could not keep her cause she already had 7 cats of her own. So we took the kitty. Later we adopted another calico from fundatioon for stry cats. The younger one is now 1 year old. They are chasing round a house and keeping each other company while we are away at work :)

When I was born, my family had a one-year old Calico named Tabby (???). Sad, but true, Tabby was my best friend for 13 years until she died.

A feral calico showed up in our backyard. My husband befriended her and she soon learnt to trust him. We already have a male kitty who is quite possessive of us, so we couldn't keep her. Hubby named her Taffy. Soon he discovered she had a litter of kittens! All cute! He fed them all and mama. But, sadly we had to give her to a shelter who promised they would find her a loving home
🐈. She still holds a special place in our hearts 💕 We heard that the babies got adopted almost immediately. Taffy is just 6-8 months old herself. We really hope she gets a forever home soon!
Kittens and puppies almost always get adopted quickly. Older animals just seem to hang out, waiting to die someday. It is sad.
I have SIX feral cats. The first one just walked in my back door one day. The next, a calico, wandered in almost a year later. As I live alone, they have adopted me. Four of the six stay inside and sleep on the bed with me. The last one, a black tom, just showed up in June. He immediately started rubbing up against my leg and requested food. I have my doubts about him actually being feral, but he was only four or five months old. I can actually hold and carry him, the only one.
They are all great little friends that I accept full responsibility for as long as they live.
I'm from the UK and I thought that calico was just the American term for tortoiseshell. Now with this video, I've found out that my cat is actually a calico as she has a white tummy and black and orange markings on her back.
I’ve had several calico cats over the years. My most special calico girl was Shannon, who was adopted on St. Patrick’s Day (thus her Irish name). She loved everyone, had the sweetest personality of any cat I’ve ever known, and was very mellow. She lived to be 18 years old and I cried every day for a long time after she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Her ashes are interred at Angel’s Rest pet cemetery in Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT

Mine is also Main Coon with the most huge long fluffy beautiful tail I ever saw.
Our HannaH was the sweetest calico ever. She loved her daddy unconditionally, and she was pretty fond of her mommy as well. She stayed with us for 13 years before crossing the Rainbow Bridge, and we still miss her terribly.

Our cat, Spooky, was a male calico. Didn't realize how rare he really was - and he was a rare treasure to our family.
Many of the characteristics people have mentioned are like my calico. She is affectionate, playful, friendly, very vocal, and for some reason doesn't like to be held. I had thought the not being held thing was due to some scary incident before I got her. Never thought it could be instinctive. She will occasionally get in my lap, but strictly her decision.
Rescued mine at 4 weeks and after 40 yrs with cats know how to hold them, but my calico? Put me down now Dad! Ok ok This is for sure part of their nature.
Same here but I been trying to pick her up only for a few seconds at a time and I think slowly she's starting to be ok with it.
Most calicos I've known definitely hate to be held! I had a male for over 14 years, he would tolerate short periods but always insist on being put down fairly quickly. His mother was also a calico, who wouldn't tolerate being held at all. And I currently have a calico who is perfectly happy to lay on my lap, but doesn't much care for me picking her up to put her there.
The reason is because she is a cat.

We house 'rescues' here in the U. K. and have a friend who works at a Vet's Office and is on the lookout for us. We inherited our Calico (not Tortie) named Annie when a homeless man turned her in to the Vet's Office, saying he was just not able to look after her anymore. Over here Torties and Calicos have the reputation of being very active - and are both bunched together and nicknamed 'Naughty Torties'. Annie is active, but not very disruptive. She is certainly the bravest of our five felines and will stand her ground if confronted. She likes to take naps with her head laying on my hand and is always on the hunt either for one of her favourite toys or for something to munch on! She's my little 'Guardian Angel'!!!
I've had 2 calicos in my lifetime.....Honey 1 and Honey 2. They were both sweet girls and very affectionate. Honey 2 preferred the company of dogs and would sit on my shoulder while my poodle sat in my lap on the couch. I miss them both so much!
My mother found a calico kitten outside our house. No one in our neighbourhood knew who the kitten was. My mother guessed that a cat breeder threw out her when she was newly weaned. We put up posters and shared it on facebook but no one wanted to adopt her, so we adopted her. Her name is Yuna and she's a happy 5 month old kitten roaming around in our house happily. She's also very vocal and obessed with food.💅✨️
I adopted a tortie a year ago today. I got her because she was diagnosed with FeLV and I wanted to give her a loving home. She’s beautiful and has mesmerizing eyes. I wished she could have a playmate so I called the Adopt a Pet that I got our tortie from and asked if they had another FeLV positive cat for adoption and that’s how we got our beautiful calico girl❤ What a blessing these two are to our lives! Their names are Holly Jo and Juniper and our lives are so wonderful with these 2 in them 🐈⬛🐈
I saved a Beautiful Tortie from one day from death at a kill shelter, then 16 years later saved a 4 week old calico from the streets. I too was blessed to have both together! We are double lucky.

My best friend had a Calico named Mindy. She terrorized anyone who entered the house. She was loved and well cared for by the family and lived a long life. RIP Mindy...you were a character and no one ever called you sweet.
Sounds like a torbie we had years ago named blossom. She did not let u pick her up, pet her , as she got older she would jump out and attack ur leg as u entered the room. She took tortittude to new levels
I have one just like that. Everyone is scared of her. She’s very nice and loving to me most of the time, but sometimes needs to bite me! My grandkids want to pet her but she doesn’t let them come near. I have had her since she was a tiny kitten, she has never been mistreated by anyone and I have had cats my whole life , but never one like her! She is a character for sure!
Yes, we had one called Cuddles when i was a young child and i remember her being quite bad tempered. I used to give her a wide berth as she would swipe at my legs as i walked past. She loved my elder brother as he was a baby when my parents got Cuddles and i think that brought out some sort of maternal instinct in her. She was always very affectionate towards him.

I was rescued by a Calico from local pet shelter the day my Siamese passed away. My Calico did not get along with the other shelter cats, to the point that she was put in a big area of her own, and no one would be allowed to adopt her without solemn promise of not being able to adopt any other cats. This being fine with us, we adopted her as Prima Pussycat Princess. She is a joy, delight, and besides the usual expected cat niceness, she also behaves rather like a Golden Retriever therapy dog, polar bear, and German Shepherd Police dog. She loves ice cubes, dark rooms, tummy rubs and is insanely enamored of squirrels. In 37.5 years of being owned by cats, and a previous 15 years of being owned by a Wire Haired Fox Terrier - all who were exemplary and wonderful friends, the Calico is the composite of all the best of my other kids put together. Would that everyone else could be so blessed! Lastly, she is a History buff and enjoys certain podcasts with me. Thank you, Purring Journal for this brilliant channel!

Cali is the cat in my profile pic, and she has also become one of my best friends. She was once a wild feral kitty that my ex-wife took in. She kept her for a few years, and Cali had several litters of kittens that my Ex was always able to find homes for, but eventually got her spayed. We are not sure of her exact age, but she is at least 12, and likely a bit older. She was given to us, my son and me, about six years ago. She is still a great little hunter, very fast, a great jumper with a very healthy soft coat of fur. I feel very fortunate to be her favorite person, by far. I have had to type a lot of comments on social media with one hand, because she could be curled up in my left are taking a long nap. She also likes to give little love bites and kisses. ❤😻Cali 😻❤

I had a torbie , that being a tabbie with red mixed in her coat. Her name was blossom. My daughter named her. The name suit her. She was a feisty one . She did not like being held at all and let u pet her only on her terms which was brief. She liked hanging out with u though when u we’re watching tv or something. She definitely took tortittude to new levels. Strangest cat 🐈 I have ever owned but I loved her
Mine is a luv bug but HATES being picked up. I hear this a lot about these girls. She suckles my neck with such love still at age five but Dad.....do not pick me up!

We have 2 indoor black cats and found a dilute calico girl outside that we think some one might have left years back and noticed that she was too thin so we now feed her also and she is looking a lot healthier now thankfully. We are only allowed 2 cats otherwise we might adopt her. Looking into getting her adopted thur local rescue i volunteer at off and on. I hate seeing her stuck outside

My calico ,Autumn Sonata, named so because she looked like a pile of Autumn leaves when curled up. She was lively, friendly and mischieveous. If you enterd the room she was in she would run and leap up to the top of your head.Thank goodness this bothered only a couple of people. LOL BUT my first cat was a white Persian. Each year a long course red hair would pop up the top of his head near his ear. later in the year the same thing would happen with a course black hair. The odd hairs would fall out after a couple of days from his grooming.

I am a happy owner of 6 amazing cats, and one of them is actually a male calico, named Sage. He is one of the prettiest and most wholesome cats I have come along and he's definitely something special. Even tho he is quite young (2 years) he understands human emotion amazingly and always knows what to do when you feel down. Sadly before he got to us he was declawed and treated harshly, that's why we are now working on keeping him safe and give him the best life possible! I love all of your videos and even tho I'm a silent watcher I just had to say that your facts are amazing and that your videos are super helpful!
My friend got a magnificent Calico cat from a rescue shelter where she was born 7 months before- she has the softest long fur and bushiest tail I’ve seen on a cat- fabulous colouring- she loves to talk back also - sometimes when my friend and I are on the phone, she wants to join in - she learn’t quick the boundaries, like not allowed on the table especially when people sitting there but she definitely runs the house now - I just love her 🥰👍🏻🇦🇺

Cool. I knew I had a rare cat, but thanks for explaining it. I have a male tabico. He is Tabby and calico. By looking at the pics you provided, I am fairly certain he is the Japanese bobtail variety. His uncle was albino and completely deaf, and his gma was blind in one eye. His mother is deaf in one ear, but so far he still hears and sees just fine. I was lucky to find them, indeed! I love my babies.
both calis and torties are so gorgeous and boy do they know it :;laughing:: god knows all of my torties have had the typical tortitude sassy, sweet and very quick to flip the switch. it makes them so precious.
I think my British short hair cat lia is a calico. But it’s hard to tell because she has brown, white, grey and orange fur 😂 my friend calls her rainbow cat
When I was growing up in Taiwan around the 1960s, we had a calico MALE cat. He was rather weak after he was born, but after one visit to the vet and getting a shot, he grew to be a beautiful cat. Our family had around 10 cats at that time, and the cats just roamed around the neighborhood ( as it was the custom there and then), so we didn't know if he actually had fathered any kittens. We didn't realize how rare he was until he had passed for years.

I got a calico kitten 8 years ago. My family laughed at her because she was very tiny with huge bulging eyes. That’s what caught my eye about her. I figured no one would ever take her. But you should see her now. She grew into her eyes so to speak. She is still a small girl but absolutely beautiful. Wish I knew how to post a pic of her. She is so loving and fun to be with. Oh this just reminds me of my perfect little TeeTee. My beautiful Patchwork GoldenEye Calico. Rest her cat soul she lived her full life. Found her when she was a kitten in a crawl space and immediately felt love.
I rescued Bella from a shelter when she was two months old. That first night in my home she crawled up the bed cover, nestled against my shoulder, and went to sleep. She's there most every night. From this video I think she is (mostly) a Norwegian Forest cat. She's a talker.

I rescued my Mioko from a house she was left behind when the people moved out,neighborhood kids told me about. She was just 3 months old and so tiny and the sweetest little girl. I still miss her.
Our little Calico was a rescue cat who we adopted when she was roughly 2/3 after her owners decided they preferred her kittens to her (nice people!), they didn't know what they were missing as she had the sweetest nature and enriched our lives, she developed a heart condition and over active thyroid but still lived a full life reaching a good age of 18.

A calico just adopted our family 6 months ago. We moved states and she came up to the door and kept trying to walk right in until we finally let her. She is the most loving friendliest cat we’ve ever seen and has settled in nicely with our toddler, two dogs, and other cat. We named her Skittles 🥰 She follows us around everywhere around the house ❤

Male calico cats are actually intersex, since Kleinfelter's is an intersex condition.
I havea beautiful calico at. She has never sat in my lap. She will come & sit beside me or sleep beside me but does not want to be held. However she does like to be in the same room as me. Other than these oddities she is a lovely pet. Very interesting & she is a true mouser. In the fall when the odd mouse takes up residence in my home she makes short work of them.

Not that rare. My sister has one and so does my nephew.

I have 1 calico that adopted me when she was a kitten. She is super affectionate and follows me everywhere in the house. She's my little protector.
My other calico or cabby (calico tabby) is the smallest of all my cats and she is such a sweetheart. She has such a small meow and barely ever meows, but when she does it is precious. And she is so super affecionate. She just wants love and attention from me, my dog, and the other cats. She loves her siblings.
