We rented a PRIVATE ISLAND in Finland! (for under $200/night!)
We lugged our gear on a sled across part of the frozen Lake Ivalo and for three days we stayed on a private island in an off grid cabin. And when we say off grid, we truly mean it! In the winter, there is zero electricity, lights, or running water. But what you lack in luxury, you gain in solitude, silence, coziness, and simplicity.

Now this is something... all other foreigners out there who are planning a visit in Finland, this is how you should do it. Forget Rovaniemi Santa Claus Park, Kakslauttanen luxury Norther lights igloos and all those touristy reindeer and husky farms that 98 to of 100 tourists do. Book your own cabin instead, far away from everything. Kudos for having your sauna debut in the winter in an old fashioned real mökkisauna (cabin sauna) that you heated yourself without unnecessary luxuries like running water. @@grimmow187 off the grid is optional for this type of experience. Many cabins are very remote from population centers, and the main difference is having electricity and sometimes running water. While it's nice to have electricity and modern conveniences, nothing can truly beat going to mökki (the cabin) and just be. It's the way our fathers, grandfathers and every father before them did. You feel more connected to nature and, if you're lucky, you can learn more about yourself.
Enjoy the silence, and the world around us. And at the end of the day, go to sauna and wash all the worries away. It's the finnish way.

Great video guys. - Heh, during the war time, in 1942, a Finnish magazine organized a public competition on what the readers thought "sisu" meant. The winner was an 11-year-old boy who was awarded for the definition: "Sisu is when you get beaten and you don't cry." The following suggestions were also awarded: "Sisu is continuing fighting with a knife sheath when your puukko (= a traditional Finnish knife) is broken." and "Sisu is the feeling that makes you to try to go for the third time into a restaurant where you've already been kicked out twice." 😜

You had a good choice for airbnb-place! Couple of years ago I with my girlfriend had the same place for us for some 4 days. It was great, we had a great time! Even as a finn, I think the atmosphere of Inari lake and cabin itself are truly unique. Also the owner was really great guy and really helpful. We spent our days skiing cross the lake and exploring island. Not forgetting sauna!

Thats the way to experience real lapland. Nice cabin sauna heated for proper degrees and dipping into that icy lake, that gives so much euphoria, even it first feels like pain on ur skin. Also that total quietness is so mind emptying and works like therapy. :)

Finnish sauna is always over 100 celsius. You did the Swedish sauna :D... also the lingonberries and cloud berries are so much better if you just buy real frozen ones and put little sugar on it, the "jam" is nothing like the real one. These are the berries we have in our forests and swamps. Cloud berries are so delicious when freshly eaten..

Hey Kathryn and Adam, thanks, really enjoyed your video! Looks like you caught some really crisp and lovely heart-of-the-winter days...:) Very glad (and impressed) that you decided to do a really authentic experience of an off-grid cabin. Those were everywhere when I was growing up, but these days Lapland is mostly full of modern or luxury cabins - and while they are of course great, you will miss some major elements of "Finnishness"...:) Enjoy your travels..!

All my Grandparents were Finnish they came to North east MN to settle in the early 1900s . As did many Finns because it's a lot like Finland so I grew up in the culture. Never was able to go there to see what part they came from. Kauhajoki and Jeppo in the western part. Thank you for this experience I will never get !
So if we get a normal winter here again. You can come to the area north of Duluth MN to experience below zero , northern lights and travel along the north shore of Lake Superior.

Nice to see that you guys like the Finnish off-grid cabin, rare people have the guts "Sisua" to spend time in such place nowadays.
I personally like to spend time away from cities and technology sometimes.
When I have sore legs, in the sauna i raise my legs close to the ceiling and the heat helps.

The relaxing effect of the ice bath and sauna combo is more something you attain afterwards having done it rather than relaxing in the moment. I doubt many feel relaxed especially if they dip their heads under the icy water or run barefoot on snow. There's a bunch of modern science that tires to explains it with things like noradrenaline and endorphin receptors being primed by heat and cold but it's really simple enough for cavemen to figure out. Feels good man. Good video.
PS. You say 100 years in the past but most Finns have or are at least familiar with summer cabins like this as a second residence so they're relevant in modern times too.

Sisu is like having the odds against you, a boot on your neck, and still cursing under your breath while you are determined to push through although failure is to be predicted. It's the determination of not laying down to accept defeat. It's pushing headfirst through the wall.
There's a Finnish saying that sums pretty well: lower your chin against your chest and head towards new disappointments. 😂 "leuka rintaan, ja kohti uusia pettymyksiä."

This is the proper Finnish way. My grandmother who passed away just a couple of years ago, lived 91 out of her 93 years in a place like this without running water. She was 92 years old when she had a shower or a toilet for the first time, before that it was buckets warmed with fire for bathing and outdoor toilet.

Nice change from those more generic videos. Off the beaten path made this video so much more worth the watch! This cabin is the one most people in Finland have where they live or visit during the summer. Then it's mostly about grilling, hammock and a book, sauna and swimming for hours and playing yard games and shooting darts with the kids.
And tip of the hat for going swimming. It's type 2 fun, where it feels so good afterwards that it's worth the initial shock.

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thanks! We'd love to make more videos like this, but there's only so many "off the beaten path" videos that fit in the budget. And then after a while those start to become the generic.
We had a wonderful experience out there! We're hoping for a place like that of our own one day!
The swimming was definitely type 2, but can't wait to do it again!
