It’s nice that you mentioned the sámi people 😊 Most tourists only care about the santa village, which is a shame because saami culture is much more interesting imo
We agree! We love to learn about the indigenous population and culture when we travel.
I Would say that Touhunen means bustling/does a lot of things/energetic. Great story :)
That is the perfect word to describe Kathryn 😃
Yeah or a like a busy bee!
"Touhunen" is a surname that would translate as "Hustler" or "Bustler" perhaps.
@@AdventuresofAplusK Finnish is sometimes a really hard language to translate.
Steve Dietrich here. I've watched nearly every video that you guys have made and I think you have found your element. Both of you look so happy experiencing winter and playing in the snow. Kathryn is positively glowing.
We really enjoyed the winter weather! We haven't experienced much of it so it was so new and fresh for us! We hope to have more winter experiences over the years! Thank you so much, Steve!
This video was so sweet. The drone shots at the Reindeer farm were gorgeous and Adam's little jokes about Rudolph being away and renewing your license were funny and well-timed 😄
Nice little break from work today!
The scenery out there was like a postcard! Thank you!
Touhunen would be like a busy worker. Or someone who is always doing something. :)
That’s an accurate name then!
I thought I saw Rudolph, but it was Adam's red nose. Katherine has always been a snow angel no matter where she is. She would be the perfect granddaughter. You two are the perfect couple. Thanks for taking us along on your travels. 👍👍5🏍🙋♂️
haha it was a bit nippy! Thank you so much, John!
My uncle has 500+ reindeer here in Rovaniemi, they're pretty cool.
Wow what a herd!
So beautiful! The reindeer, the snow, the snotcicles! 😆 Y'all are livin the dream! ❤️
Good video and you really had good time! Did you know the fun fact, that the arctic circle moves about 14.5 meters per year because the axle of Earth is wobbling. The arctic circle travels about 250 kilometers back and forth in a 41000 year cycle.
That is so wild! Thanks for sharing that and thanks for watching!
Another great video y'all! So much fun! Who else is binge watching A+K adventures on this rainy blustery day in WA? 🙋
Woohoo! We miss those days! Thank you! ❤
We absolutely loved watching your Finland Winter adventure. Manitoba winter is so similar but their culture looked amazing. Thank you for sharing.🇨🇦
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Santa Claus is from Rovaniemi only for tourists. Actually he's from Korvatunturi, which is small mountain in the east, middle of nowhere. It's four hours of riding with small dirt road, assuming you can even get there in winter.
Thanks for sharing!
What the reindeer are eating is actually not moss, but in fact lichen.
Thanks for sharing
@@AdventuresofAplusK No problem. Sharing will save the world!
It’s been a while since I’ve commented…but we’ve been watching your vlogs every Sunday! Finland is so beautiful and this looks like an absolute winter paradise! Seeing the joy on your faces and how much fun you had was wonderful! Oh what fun it is to ride in a one reindeer open sleigh!
Ho ho ho Brad! Thank y'all for watching! Finland was a straight up postcard! We had a blast!
Great fun!
Excited to see coming videos
This looks so fun!
Love to watch these❤
Holy Reindeer it's cold 🥶!
How cool. Love the reindeer farm
It was awesome. Thank you for sharing.
Such a beautiful winter wonderland!
Beautiful scenery ❤😍 thanks for sharing!
Epic trip...
My elf name is Voitto! Which means victory or profit. 😃
My husband got Ontu, which I thought sounded way cooler…but it means “lame.” Hahaha.
Hahaha too funny!!! 😂
beautiful and cold❤
Santa!!!!! How fun was this!!! I want to work at the baby reindeer day care! Drone shots are awesome! What a treat this was!
The day care would be so cute! Santa was such a gent!
Love this video! Love all the pictures - Christmas Town, Santa, Rein Deer! Bless you on your way. ❤
Ok the reindeer was awesome so cool!
Yes they were!
"Reindeer butts drive me nuts" 😂
My elf name is Naava! "Old man's beard".
😂
love the name!
Amazing trip! Thank you very much for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely beautiful! What an experience.
Yes it was! Thank you!
That was excellent (and 🥶)⭐️🤩😎
Thanks, Charles!
What a fun trip…thanks to you both for showing us such cool new places!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Beautiful scenic place, just amazing. 😊🐕🇺🇲🦌
It felt like we were in a postcard!
nice content
How fun Santa and reindeer! We even got to experience some of the cold every time we heard that crunch or squeak of the snow. Thanks for sharing.
It was so magical out there and it felt like a postcard! Meeting Santa was the best. Thanks, Bob!
Touhunen means kinda of like "being busy"
Fun fact: even the most southern parts of Finland are more north than any part in USA.
That’s pretty wild, huh!?
My elf name is Myssy ...which means beanie in finnish. Thank you for sharing this video with us, it looked like it was a lot of fun at the Santa Village and seeing the reindeer. Woohoo! Cant wait to see next week's video!
Beanie is the perfect name for a Finnish elf in the winter!
Beautiful scenery guys!! The reindeer are awesome animals and I didn't know that their antlers grew back the same shape!! Interesting stuff guys and a BIG thank you for bringing us along on your adventures!!!
We loved learning about them. Thank you and thanks for watching, Jeff!
Your videos are fun to watch and the quality of picture, sound and editing are just superb!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing so much interesting information in this video and the previous one; especially where I will probably never get to go but I can experience it through your video. Hearing the crunch your boots made on the snow, I could definitely tell it was extremely cold. The reindeer were so cute!
It was super cold, but so much fun! We're glad you enjoyed it!
I loved this town…I felt like I was watching you in a postcard…so beautiful and magical! Seeing Santa and taking a sleigh ride pulled by reindeer was so cool!
It really was magical and beautiful! It did feel like we were in a painting or postcard. Santa was the best and reindeer were cute and fun!
That salmon looked absolutely yummy.
The tour to the reindeer farm looked like a blast. They really included a lot.
Oh it was melt in your mouth delicious! The reindeer were so majestic and interesting!
Nice to see you talk about the sámi, I'm sámi living in Rovaniemi 👍
Thank you for watching!
Awesome! I got chilled just watching this! And I'm in Arizona 😂
It is 80ºF in Texas today and it is wild to think that last month we were in temperatures 97 degrees colder than this 😂
Touhu is a somewhat relaxed/whimsical way to refer to doing something, and -nen is a surname suffix or a suffix for something small (book/booklet = kirja/kirjanen). There's probably some related reason for why it's a surname suffix but I don't know the connection.
Linguistically, the -nen ending marks the diminutive form.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Lovely and neat episode! I can’t believe how cold it is and you guys taking it all in with so much enthusiasm. Love it❤️. Adam I was in Houston a couple of weekends ago with my son. We ate at “ The Pit Room “ and “Pinkerton’s”. Both were fabulous meals . I didn’t think I would enjoy a brisket so much😋😋. My son is already planning a trip with his friends just to eat 😂😂.
Oh man! Those are two of my favorites...especially The Pit Room! Y'all are my kinda people! 😊
Thanks and thanks for watching!
I'm "Ontu"...and I ❤Reindeers❤😘
Love it!
Each new video is like a Christmas present :)
Woohoo! Ho ho ho!
Nice to see this kind of videos 😊I was born in Kemijärvi city Lapland. Kemijärvi is near Rovaniemi, I know Rovaniemi very well, I have visited there many times. Our summer is also beautiful you should visit.
We can't wait to come back one day!
Touhunen: the active/diligent one.
In the sense of goodie two-shoes
How fitting!
You should've tried sautéed reindeer in lapland, its my farourite dish ever.
We make it and try it in our next video 😃
Greetings from Finland! It was very entertaining to watch all of your 3 videos about Finland. They were very fun and pleasent to watch, becouse you appreciate the culture and everything and try stuff etc. If you ever come back to Finland again you could also try snowmobile riding buy yourself or hottubs with smokesauna. You gained a subscriber! Thanks for the videos and keep it up! 😊 Also don't worry about falling it also happens to the best of us. 😂
We had such an amazing time in Finland and can't wait to come back! Snowmobiling and smoke sauna does sound fun! Thank you and thanks for watching! ❤
I've been watching videos about Lapland, and I've come across you guys. I'm from Mississippi. I would love to go there. It looks like so much fun. I Also just subscribed ☺️
We hope you can get out there one day! It’s amazing! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Always happy to see another Adventure.. I just added some new videos on my channel.
I just read a story about a town in Nebraska , population -1
Monowi NE
One woman that’s it
❤❤
Wow, this is such an incredible adventure ya'll are on! We are done with our contract here and got an Air BnB in the heart of San Francisco where we will chill for a month, then on to the next assignment in Redmond Oregon, 15 minutes north of Bend! We'll be there for at least 3 months. Def gonna eat at that falafel place ya'll showcased in your video. Can't wait!
Oh nice! Man y'all are getting to see some sweeeeet spots! Bend is an absolute blast! And you'll be there are a good time too! Don't miss that falafel place...so dang good!
@@AdventuresofAplusKThe drone will fly....
How fun! Santa himself, YAY! 🥳 Wow! that is cold. You look dressed very appropriately for the temperature though. My Elf name is Pipo which means: "Jehovah increases" That is so cool! :) Very fun video, so much joy! - Michelle
It was so fun meeting the BIG GUY! We felt pretty warm except for our hands because of filming! Thanks and thanks for watching!
We have a saying in Finland: "There is no bad weather, just bad clothing". :)
So true!
Loving your videos. Looking to visit soon. Can you say what time of the year was this?
This was filmed in January 2024
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Hello Adventurers, and No-No-Noooo...you can't have Salmon...it's mine! MINE! HAHA, I know ya'll are having a wonderful time up there. Enjoy every minute of your fun. Wish I was there with you.
Ooooo you would've loved the salmon! Best salmon we've ever had! It was such a fantastic time!
😄 Pro tip: Make your snow angels in snow that hasn't been stepped in or all packed down. Bonus pro tip: If your hands get cold inside gloves buy some electronic hand warmers or use things like Hothands hand warmers.
Yeah that would've been a good idea 😂
Oh believe us, we had hot hands, mittens and gloves. The problem is filming. You have to take at least one hand out to push the tiny buttons on the cameras. Once you do that, it's hard to get your hands warmed back up!
Thanks for the tips!
Snotcycles!😂😊
😂😂
That salmon looked amazing! My elf name btw is Saana
It was so good! Cool name!
My elf name is Saana! Would definitely love to visit Santa village one day! Thank you for an amazing video! ❤
Hi Saana!!! 👋🏼
In case you didn't know Saana is the name of one of the most famous fell/ mountain in Finland.
HEY ADAM! I definitely saw that your "Fishing in Finland" showed up a month later. I think that is a serious reason to get out and do some FLY FISHING my friend. 🎣 😃
I'm hoping to do a lot of that in 2024!
@@AdventuresofAplusK
I’ll be looking forward to it. 🤣
Love this! So informative. I am traveling to Lapland next month - wondering what the tipping culture is like there for tours and excursions? Is tipping expected like in the US?
Tipping isn't really common in Finland, definitely not like in the US. We didn't even have the option to tip at most places. We didn't notice many people tipping guides or on tours, but we always try to tip when we can though! Have fun!!
Hi, no need to tipping in Finland, the prices are already extremly high and "tips" are like included workers pays, so no, don't give tips.
Another Excellent Video Katherine and Adam 🎉 Thanks so much !
My Elf name is 'Ontu' 😊
Hey Ontu! Thank you! ❤
Touhunen means basically always doing something :)
That is Kathryn! Kind of crazy how accurate it is!
Looked my name up and it's Aatos which means "thought" in Finnish. At least that's what I found when I looked it up! :) Thanks for another great video!
That's fun! Thanks and thanks for watching!
Aate means thought but Aatos is a kind of name mutation of the word! Could also be old finnish language but it's not used anyway :)
Apparently Jippu is my elf name. Thanks you guys for always making amazing content for us viewers!
Awesome! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Hey guys! My name is Janka! Love you guys!
Very cool! Thank you! ❤
Amazing video! I’d love to visit there around Christmas! Long time sub. ❤ Having a Sprinter custom order, due mid June. I’ll have a few questions for you. 😁
Very cool! We're pumped for you! Let us know!
Thank you! Questions, how are the Kosta solar panel working out? I want 200 watt panels. And how cool does the Dometic 2000 RTX AC get the van in 85-90 degree heat?
The solar panels are great! They seem to be better than the Renogy ones we had before. And they fit perfect on the roof. The AC is great also. It blows really cold. Our only problem is it doesn't stay cold. We think it may be our insulation job, but not sure. 15 minutes after we turn off the AC it gets warm again. On a nice sunny day when the sun is high the eco mode on the AC draws about as much as is coming in so that is nice. We didn't have a ton of sun last year so we couldn't run the AC as often as we'd like, but it was nice to have! We recommend the solar panels and the AC!
Thanks a million! Heat is my kryptonite. 🤣 Need to be sure about large purchases as you guys know!😁 My research lead me to the conclusion you just confirmed! Love to watch you guys. I binged watched you from your first video! Sub from years ago. Enjoy Europe! ❤🎅🏻
Also I don’t think any van will stay cool for long in high heat. As long as it cools the van in high temps, I can stay in eco mode. 👍
I'd love to know how you guys went about booking this trip. I've looked into Northern Finland during winter for a few years but every time it comes back very expensive and haven't found much in the way of budget options. I know you guys usually try to do things frugally so if this trip has been the same, please share your tips. I appreciate it may have just been something you saved up for though!
We did a bit of both! We got the IHG hotel card and that really helped us in Germany and Helsinki. We got almost 14 nights of free hotels with the welcome points from that card! But for the northern Finland stuff, you just have to bite the bullet. We looked for cheaper airbnbs in Rovaniemi, stayed away from expensive tours, and didn’t stay at the really expensive resorts many people do. In the next video we stay at a unique accommodation to get a similar experience to those nicer resorts but MUCH cheaper! We didn’t find the food that be thaaaat expensive. We definitely drained our trip find for the trip but it’s sooo worth it!
My elf name is Alvar which is just some kind of grassland
I even looked up my sisters' elf names - they got Töpponen (felt slipper) and Kaneli (cinnamon)
Very cool!!! We are loving hearing these elf names!
Another great video guys wow thats cold I have been in -9 it's cold. My elf name is Wonky LOL too funny see ya next week stay safe
haha Wonky! 😂
from Mn visiting Tyler Tx it was so HOT my mascara melted on my eyelashes! I'll take the cold.
haha sounds about right
My elf name is HONO! Mending nets & mountains. I’ll go with that since I was a commercial fisherman and mountaineer. Enjoying your videos!!
It's crazy how fitting they can be! Kathryn's is pretty spot on as well! Thank you!
Snotsicles😂
Will there any snow in May? As I will traveling there this coming Spring 😀
Hope not , i live there and we have snow nearly six months!
The snow usually melts by the end of May.
My elf name is Jänkä and the Google gods tell me it means "bad ass." LOL
We went to this village in July so we had the midnight sun, and no snow. That is fine with me, because I see enough snow where I live in Michigan!
No, Jänkä is a kind of marshland in Lapland where there is no or very few trees.
Under -20 is only cool , over -20 is cold.
-26°C is under -20°C. When talking about negative numbers bigger number is lower and smaller number is higher. Sorry for "banging the dot" 😅
Weird reindeer factoid, but the Finnish reindeer (and by extension, all the reindeer of Europe and Asia) and the North American reindeer - otherwise known as caribou - are both the same species (Latin name Rangifer tarandus), just on different continents.
And, perhaps not surprisingly, they fill a similar role on both continents for the indigenous peoples living in the Arctic zones. The Sami of Northern Europe, the Nenets and the Chukchi and other peoples of the Siberian Arctic, and the Inuits, Yupiks and Kalaallit of Canada and Greenland traditionally all relied largely or near-exclusively on reindeer/caribou for meat, fat and furs.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing!
My elf name is Valkea, which means bright or white! 🧑🏻🎄
Very cool!
Where do you guys think Santa stops by to eat while delivering all those US presents? I'm sure the Texan beef is the highlight of his year as well.
Oh he definitely pops in for some Texas brisket! No doubt!
Well, of course it´s "touristy". I bet Disneyland in the US also is.
When were you there? Was this in January?
Yes, very beginning of January 2024
Christmas 2024? Sounds like you got your card, 11 months early. Maybe there's still hope.😊
We double checked the footage and we put it in the right box (for Christmas 2024), but it arrived earlier this month to Texas! Our friends who visited a couple years ago did in fact get theirs the following Christmas, so ours must have been a fluke! Oh well! 😅
@@AdventuresofAplusK When we were there in early July 2022, we had my grandchildren get personalized letters from Santa. They arrived just before Christmas, just as promised :)
I'm just too confused. As Finn we tell our children that Santa works and lives in Korvatunturi at secluded secret spot. It is eastern side of lapland. But maybe it is good to have tourist attraction 🤔
We bet many places claim to be the official home of Santa. It's all just for fun!
The reindeer can be very annoying in the summer when they roam freely and get on all the roads to escape the mosquitoes in the forests. Can slow down traffic very much depending on the amount of reindeer in the group
Oh yeah I can imagine that being annoying
I'm sad that they use the word "Elf" in that website because Santa's traditional Nordic helpers should be translated more accurately as "gnomes". They are just one group of gnomes and in tradition there was a gnome watching over every home, there were garden gnomes (like the plastic statue) as well as other gnomes.
Just go to the next vilage and youl se whats the winter wonderland land is next door....
Elf name: Mutu
The Santa Claus village does it open all year long?
Yes it’s open year round!
14:24 "Mine was 'Touhunen'..."
Touhu could be translated as "Bustle", as in "hustle and bustle", and the -nen suffix is a common suffix for surnames, technically meaning "of small". Your elf name localized to English might be something like "Somebustle".
That is so fitting for Kathryn! Funny how that works!
Bustly?
Beautiful scenery!! I think everyone should experience snow at least once in their lifetime. Thanks for sharing!! Those reindeer were beautiful and they looked very well cared for. In Canada, this year the weather has been odd. Areas either got a ton of snow or very little. Where we are in southern Ontario it has been above seasonal and fairly dry. I prefer the snow. It makes everything look so clean. Well it looks like we should be leaving out moss instead of carrots for Santa's reindeer. Ha Ha, the great debate. Does Santa live in Canada or Finland? His Canadian address is North Pole, Canada. Postal Code H0H 0H0. Letters to Santa sent to this address will receive a response. There are also claims that he lives in Greenland, USA (Alaska) and Norway. Where he lives is left up to the imagination of kids around the world.
We totally agree! We love the snow as well
I like that thought as well!
