You have to look further north, or western Alaska. Southeast, south central, and along the chain, it’s very easy to get produce via Alaska Marine Highway, or even the road system. @@douglaswalters396 Yes but native populations living so remotely they have to catch their own food are such extreme and rare examples that veganism obviously wouldn’t apply to them and no one’s saying they should. She used the blanket term Alaskan natives which applies to all. Which just goes to show her ignorance, shes implying all Alaskan natives are living off remotely and have to catch their own food which a stereotype. My point is there are still Alaskan native people in Alaska (myself included) who are vegan and her using Alaskan natives to prove her point is aplles. Also I don’t think anywhere in Alaska is “easy” to be vegan unless you live in maybe Anchorage. If I wanted to go out to eat I have damn near no options where I live.

I'm a German who is vegan and if i want to go eat out, i pretty much 90% of the time go to Asian restaurants, because they have always at least a few meals which are completely vegan and taste absolutely delicious !!
The problem is that many vegans say that veganism being colonialist isn't true with the argument of it being rooted in hindu and Buddhist culture... yet they are the same people who call the same people (hindu's and Buddhist) carnist and animal abusers because they aren't vegan but vegetarians. They do this all while taking and appropriating culinary assets from east and south asian cultures who are the BLUEPRINT of veganism. They wouldn't have tofu, tempeh, seitan, soy sauce, coconut aminos, noodles, spices, tea, coconut milk, kombucha, kimchi, soybeans, edamame, rice, many exotic fruits/ vegetables/ mushroom such as jackfruit or shiitake and so forth if it weren't for east and south asians. So yes as a asian vegan, I can say veganism is a movement that is very centered around white people (at least from my personal experience). With white vegans constantly rebuking asian and black vegans for being too passive with their activism without taking in account of intersectionality (ex: If I say to my parents that the food they cooked their whole life is disgusting and that they are nothing but murderers and as bad as rapists I would get my ass whooped and/or excluded from my community. While the average white vegan can talk sht to their parents or friends dietary choices without any lasting consequences. They don't have the internalized pressure to preserve their cultural identity in a world trying to assimilate poc's and if rejected by family they wouldn't feel completely alienated because it is so easily to find support of like-minded people with similar experiences outside of their household. On top of all that, they constantly are comparing animal agriculture to racialized oppression while not experiencing racialized oppression themselve (which is problematic because they do not carry the emotional, social and economical bagages associated with colonialism and institutionalized racism to make a judgement on that behalf. And again, there is a reason why animals aren't given human rights... Rights comes with responsibility/ following the law which until now animals are incapable of doing).
Girl!! Do not drag indigenous people into this so you feel good about your bad choices. We don't need a spokesperson, we can speak for ourselves, I am indigenous and vegan.

@@silasxiii by and large he's debating university students, including the most prestigious ones like King's College London, Brown University and Harvard. I have never seen him lose a debate whoever is in front of him, and the only time he's not able to get his full arguments across is when he's invited on TV and cornered by 3 different people all of whom oppose and interrupt him. By the way, he currently teaches at Harvard, has given several TED Talks, held several speeches at various universities, produced a number of documentaries, and written two best-selling books. I think these credentials validate the idea that he knows what he's talking about. Let me flip it on you though: isn't it easy to sound righteous on TH-cam when you've got nothing but a shitty attitude, can't even do one bit of research, offer zero evidence, and are pretty secure in knowing the person you're attacking will likely never challenge you back? What's your credentials in claiming he's not right about anything? Say it with your chest buddy.

@@dachsrottweiler my understanding is that halal meat involves slaughtering the animal in a way that minimises pain in the animal. Obviously killing the animal still involves pain and I'm sure halal methods predate any scientific testing to see if it's actually minimizing animal suffering.
But halal meat is typically done by slitting the throat and then I think sometimes hanging them to remove blood. Which obviously still sounds like quite the traumatic and painful experience for the animal.
But you'd have to research it more to be sure. I don't really want to look more into it as it's pretty gross lol.

this. i have one friend who i can talk to about veganism, and she isnt vegan (idk any vegans irl). but she never tries to justify it and she usually agrees with me after asking clarifying questions/ looking at proof. her excuse is "i just dont care"... hearing that makes me sick to my stomach but hey, at least its honest. im so tired of the types that constantly feel the need to validate themselves using crazy ass reasoning like this. if you feel that guilty just go vegan and save us all the trouble.

I have said this so many times. People who just admit that they care more about the taste pleasure than they do about the lives of those animals... or they believe animals aren't worthy of being treated with respect because they're not humans. Those people... though I think it's sad, at least it's honest.

@@natimages3The historical philosophical roots of veganism exist in Hindu and Buddhist philosophy- in the early understanding that animal suffer and that our suffering and theirs is connected, thus we should try to reduce their suffering. The reasons that many Buddhists were not vegan historically is a) the kind of suffering that animals endure now in dairy farms is totally different to the way in which most native people have procured dairy and b) the global trade and agriculture did not allow for a person to easily have a vegan diet until recently. Now many Buddhists who are actually trying to minimize the suffering they cause do avoid unethically sourced dairy.

I am Indigenous, Rosebud Sioux and Yakama Nation and I'm also vegan.
The reason I went vegan was because of my Indigenous culture, I was taught to treat animals with respect.
When I was 5 years old my uncle took us hunting, he shot an Elk, we found it and it was bleeding out.
He pulled out some tobacco and said a prayer for it, he thanked it for all the resources it would supply our family with. He hushed it to sleep and stabbed it, killing off the elk.
As I got older I realized the way I eat had no tie to the animals, it had NO RESPECT for the animals.
I could just go to the store and get as much meat and dairy as I wanted without paying my respects to the animal.
So, me going vegan was directly tied to my relation with Indigenous culture.
Edit: This is when I grew up on the reservation and with the resources I had, this was out of necessity. Then as I got older and moved away to attend University is when I realized my disconnect.
i always say this. veganism is very aligned with indigenous culture values yet so many people try to use those same values against veganism to excuse their actions which just boggles my mind.
Thank you for sharing this! I have seen this excuse about “indigenous people honored animals when they hunted them” in the past, as a way to justify eating meat now. I’ve always understood the case to be that some indigenous cultures truly respected the animals. They did hunt them because they had no other choice at the time. But that with new availability to nutritious plant foods- those same indigenous values would mean we stop hunting. It was never about killing the animals, it was always about causing the least harm and doing the best to show care.

Like most people we haven't really given much thought to eating animals and treating them as mere commodity and so we don't really have good rational justification.

Japanese used to eat pescaterian diet due to their Buddhist beliefs. They started eating meat when they encountered white culture and started to colonize other countries.

Served here in Jamaican restaurants. Just trying to learn more so please tell me I’m being stupid. Obviously I know there is a lot of meat in other parts of Jamaican / Caribbean culture. I kind of get where she was coming from. While, of course, there are a lot of POC vegans, more vegans are white and middle class. In England at least (where I'm from). I mean, look at the milk pour events today. They were in Harrod's, Fortnum and Mason, M&S Food and Waitrose. All firmly middle class.

Most people who are plant-based are not out of choice, which is good for their health (so long as they have enough to eat full stop), but a sad sign of the fiscal times in the UK.

This was excruciating to watch. I feel sorry for the people who are obligated to interact with this woman on a daily basis.
I'm indigenous and vegan, I can still eat traditional foods that we make even though sometimes I adjust them but I am not losing out on anything by not harming animals. Especially if it is not your culture, don't use it to justify your bad decisions.
If you get your vegetables from the supermarket, trust me, you're doing a lot more harm to animals than you realize. Just because you're ignorant, it doesn't make you a moral person. Look up how many animals are killed while killing a field to grow your vegetables, it'll probably make you sick to your stomach. But then you'll finally be able to pull your head out of your ass and stop listening to assholes like these.

My husband is Indigenous, he works for a First Nations government, we live on FN land in a remote area in the Yukon north of the capital of Alaska where most people hunt and fish...and we have both been vegan for over 20 years. I have to say this woman is living in a fantasy world, "romanticizing the Indian" with her confused beliefs. She has a patronizing view of Indigenous people, as though they are incapable of nuance and critical thinking, as though they all think the same.
There are very few places now where Indigenous people *have* to hunt, fish, trap. No rational vegan would ever consider the members of those communities immoral for doing what they need to do to live in such places. But in many Indigenous nations and communities that still rely on hunting, trapping and fishing, members also eat things like MacDonald's and KFC, cook turkey for Christmas, ham on other holidays, eat ice cream, bacon, fish sticks, butter, cookies. Are those foods part of their culture and traditions? Are they honoring and thanking the factory-farmed cows, pigs, and chickens for their lives, too? Are they somehow incapable of choosing plant-based options solely because they are Indigenous? Even an *gasp* Indigenous person who largely relies on hunting and fishing can make plant-based choices where possible to help reduce the suffering of animals and humans and to avoid supporting the destruction of our environment. I know, I know...it's wild!
Btw, there are always vegan burgers and other plant-based menu items available at my husband's First Nation's community events now. Many members are eating plant-based meals more often. There was a vegan recipe included in the annual cookbook this year even. Times are changing. I encourage this woman to get with them. ;)

She ‘lost’ the debate the minute she started talking about white colonialism, as if the early colonialist and settlers in the western world were vegan or that the concept originated out of western thinking. I am of Native American heritege (just like many Mexicans are) and I can assure you that being vegan is compatible with our culture. Corn, beans, tomatoes, avocados, cacao, chillies, squash, and sweet potatoes are a few plants that our Mesoamerican ancestors cultivated in Anahuac (North America). Animal agriculture didn't exist in the Americas before the European invasion. Our ancestors hunted out of necessity, but when there is no necessity, there is no justification. A very common philosophy across the Native Americans cultures is the reverence of nature and living beings. I think that some of our ancestors had a distinction between plants and animals based on language. For example, in the Nahuatl language, animate subjects can be pluralized like "humans" and "non-human animals". But inanimate objects are not pluralized, which includes "plants".
Wait, I'm confused. You're saying that Native American ancestors killed animals for food out of necessity, yet grew corn, beans, tomatoes, avocados, cacao, chillies, squash and sweet potatoes? So how do you explain the "necessity" part if they had all those crops to eat?

@@harveyplantharvester1502 well I’m in apush and at the very least, it seemed to be sustainable because some groups of native Americans for instance, followed the buffalo herds and their populations would be fine. Then with westward expansion, the us army would kill the buffalo only for their skin and also in an effort to ruin the way of life of the native Americans. For instance I think something like 3 million buffalo were killed in 1872-73 alone simply because they sought to destroy the native Americans. That’s pretty messed up if you ask me.
Absolutely! I love Mexican food/culture and find it very easy to eat plant-based dishes that are healthy and nutritional as well as super tasty. Ancient history, as well as archeology, prove plant-based diet was always a larger part of native people's culture.
@@harveyplantharvester1502 Well there were mannnyy different tribes in Mesoamérica for example there were nomadic hunter gatherers in the northern region which is dessert, and in the tropical/jungle region in the south (where the Aztecs and Mayas lived) there were civilizations where agriculture was practiced. In the arid regions, hunting was out of necessity and in the jungle regions, eating animals was on special occasions and usually for higher ups.

Ironically, that world view is what made me vegan. Native beliefs were about the persoanl sacrifice of the anumal for the benefit of the tribe. They used to personally thank the buffalo for their sacrifice. When I was a child, I couldn't look at the animal and thank them for their sacrifice, so I decided to become a vegetarian. Eventually after that I decided I wasn't vegetarian enough and became a vegan. Very few people in the modern world actually have that connection that they were hunting for that purpose and that necessity. And even if they did, most people don't need to.

@@15jorada the sad thing is many forget these actions are done out of NECESSITY. Even then it's overemphasized to a point where many indigenous cultures are lumped together as strictly hunters. It ignores the agricultural prowess of many of the cultures in the Americas including the ancient Maya, Aztec cultures and the Inca to the south and really plays into the tired old "noble savage" tropes. A lot of the emphasis on eating animals and especially animal agriculture are a colonial import.
I've always been a meat eater and I'm struggling to find reasons why after watching this
didn't start reducing meat consumption until I was 21 or so, took 5 years to go pescatarian->vegetarian->vegan-> mostly vegan( my wife is not vegan and I don't like to throw away food so it is what it is). I think the push to have people just jump right into being Vegan is a bit harmful, nutrition is a balancing act and take time to adjust imo, but a full transition is totally doable over the course of a month or two if you know what foods to eat and what supplements to add in.

I can’t imagine how offended indigenous people must feel watching this. The way she is using their culture and practices to justify her eating meat is quite extraordinary. There is a way to steadily introduce new foods/tastes/textures in a way that reduces the sensory overload I get, but it's never 100%. I am vegan, but the first month I was vegan was very very difficult for me and I wish there was more focus on finding ways to make the transition easier for people like me. And just an FYI, pretty much all the substitutes actually were way worse than the vegetables, in regards to my sensory overload. Eating the substitutes just had an opposite effect of making me hyper-aware of the differences between the substitute and the real thing

I can get some people's appreciation for them, many taste good, many of them are popular, but with few exceptions I can live without them and not feel like I'm missing anything. You raise a good point that it becomes hyper-aware, reminds me of the uncanny valley phenomenon with certain things for me. The Beyond brand is pretty good in my opinion because it doesn't hit that. For me seitan is pretty guilty of that uncanny valley effect. I want to eat it because of its high protein content but a lot of it just has this weirdly meaty texture that isn't really appetizing. Beans or tofu for protein for me.

It's not the norm BY FAR of course, but yes there are instances where wildlife walks up to starving persons [mostly natives] and accept to be slaughtered. The chance of that happening when someone is on the verge of dying is pretty minimal, but I guess statistics works in mysterious ways because some sick animals may do this if you want a scientific explanation... If you haven't investigated a topic you should be more careful of judging harshly. I however do not defend actions that take life and cause pain for the sake of eating when there are other options. Then again plants go into panic when someone cuts them, it's scientifically proved. I guess we'll find a way working around that, like animals too can be killed without fear and pain for those who feel that need - not practiced by any meat supplier today. Eating animals like people do today is of course not sustainable so things must change. Food is quite an intricate decision, but more people are awakening to compassion. Oof I'm only a few minutes in. The colonization argument she brings up is so fascinating to me as a mixed Black/African/Native living in the US. I would argue that the European colonizers brought forth increased meat and dairy consumption onto African and Indigenous populations. By me becoming vegan, I am de-colonizing my food practices and learning that my true ethnic/native food sources did not have nearly as much meat as was introduced by colonization and westernization.

I really admire your patience Ed. I don't understand why people sit down to debate just for the sake of proving the other person wrong instead of being able to do that while also being open to admit their mistakes or to just learn from other perspectives. I respect her for putting herself in this position, however, I do think that she came up with many different arguments just for the sake of being right.
The question is why arent YOU vegan yet. Not “why arent indigenous people vegan yet”. What are YOUR reasons. Its so annoying when people who routinely shop at supermarkets and have so many options bring up a really niche group of people like indigenous people
Yeah people always deflect. For example, all my leftist friends will say “there is no ethical purchasing under capitalism” but then tell me to boycott Nabisco when they are screwing over workers. Which I am totally willing to do, I am currently boycotting Amy’s Kitchen for workers rights. But if our purchasing power doesn’t mean anything than why should we boycott?
At the end of the day they just don’t want to go vegan.
There is no reason to be vegan except to feel like a good person. If the entire world or even a significant amount of the world went vegan, it would definitely make a difference. However what one person does has no affect on anything. Unless you're butchering animals yourself to eat them, you will not be reducing industrial animal abuse. Even someone like Ed doesn't have nearly the amount of influence he needs to make real change.
@@maryeverett2266 What a horrible outlook to have on anything. Replace "vegan" in your paragraph with "feminist" or "anti-racist" and read it back. Sounds ridiculous. Lead by example. No social movements ever changed the world over night, they start with one person and that person spreads that message and it has a domino effect. So tired of seeing this ridiculous argument. Also yes it does have an effect, maybe not significant in the grand scale of things, but if you replace animals with plants in your diet, you will be saving the amount of animals you would otherwise be eating. That's how supply and demand works. Also, why would you continue to support something that you don't agree with just because it wont change the world? Make it make sense.

I agree! I use this during outreach. Many people want to talk about being on an island or being in a life or death scenario. Or they want to bring up people in the middle-east or Africa. In reality they’re driving to Safeway/Walmart/Target to pick up their factory-farmed meats, dairy products, and eggs. What the heck does being on an island have to do with that!? They love to appropriate others’ situations to justify their choices.

I'm glad she was so ego, it's good she put her ignorance out in the world because, so many people are confused by theses same arguments.
Maybe though she will think about this discussion later, calmly, and research more, maybe even reconsider her views. Sometimes in a discussion we try to hold our ground even if we feel it shaking. But after some time, some honest thoughts later maybe she will consider that he might have had a point. She seemed very emotional to me and it felt like she had to take lots of painful hits to her whole identity. I hope she will take something good out of this.

Lmao, what do they feed them on their massive journey to the middle of an oasis? It must be a huge journey if the people can’t leave it so how do the animals survive such a journey? They wouldn’t have the capability to carry food supply let alone water supply for these animals to make it into the oasis even alive, not to mention living in an oasis incapable of growing plants what natural medicines would they have? Or shelter from the sun? Eating animals would be a risk for them as they can’t be treated for parasites. Which means poorly cooked meat or accidentally consumed animal saliva, snot or waste could be fatal to the people if consumed, such instances can be observed with Ebola, swine flu and even Corona virus. You also know that you cannot live on meat alone? Without fruit and vegetables (referencing you saying ‘plants literally can’t grow’) you will develop Scurvy, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and more. Speaking of oasis’s you do realise an ‘Oasis’ is an un-expected water source in the middle of the desert which allow for a lush variety vegetation to grow such as date trees, figs, corn, wheat and citrus fruits just name a few or did you not know this? You do realise the only people living in an Oasis in current day are generally nomadic tribes right? Which as Ed has stated we aren’t talking about tribes or survival situations, we’re talking about us in a 1st world country. With 1st world privileges such as grocery shops, locally grown goods, fast food and food ordering apps. I meant to say it’s kinda stupid to come to a conversation about veganism and immediately bring up an example of where people can’t be vegan, while the question is posed to someone living in the middle of an “oasis”. By that I mean one of the most diverse cities in the United States where you can find vegan options and vegan restaurants on every corner.
