    I'm so glad you pointed out the swapbetween inputs 2 & 3 on the Decklink 8k. I cannot undersatnd why the SDI connectors on the card go 1,3,2,4? If you try to open them as inputs in vMix in the order 1,2,3,4, it creates an error message. But open them as camera inputs in vMix in the order 1,3,2,4 and all is well. Bizarre.

    I found a bunch of these today at a recycling facility and decided to buy them all for $24 without knowing what they were because they looked expensive. (x4) Decklink 8K Pro, (x2) Decklink Duo 2, and (x1) Decklink Quad HDMI Recorder cards. Unfortunately 2 of the Decklink 8K Pros and the Decklink Quad HDMI Recorder card were damaged, but thanks to this video I was able to test the others and they surprisingly work. Had no idea they were so expensive!!! Will probably just resell them.

    FYI @doug this will NOT do 2 outputs and alpha/key at the same time. This is directly from BMD. I wanted to change the use of mine and wasn't able to use it in that case. My current config is 2 outputs for Alpha Key (l3rd), 1 output for full screen graphics and 1 input. I was surprised when it works as an input in this configuration.

      It's right on the box: "Built in high quality keying for overlay of RGBA graphics over video input, *or output of fill and key on dual SDI outputs*"
      You have to have software that will support it, like CasparCG.

    • @olenessaljosdal7506

      @@djp_video I'm sorry I wasn't clear on what I'm saying. You CAN have 2 SDI conns for Alpha Key or 2 separate Alpha key outputs (4 conns all together) BUT you CANNOT have it setup as Alpha key (Key/Fill) and 2 separate outputs. You will only have 1 additional output. The last SDI conn can be for an input. I use this on ProPresenter 7 that has Alpha Key support.

    I've found the blackmagic internal cards to be very finicky. I've tried their capture cards without success (a lot of issues). And I still own the mini monitor which just until recently always had a slight playback delay. The fix was to install the mini monitor in a CPU linked PCIe slot. After watching a video on PCIe slots I learned most of the PCIe slots on most motherboards are chipset linked PCIe slots. On my motherboard the only slots that were linked directly to the CPU were the two PCIe 16x slots.
    I'm not sure if installing the mini monitor in the PCIe 16x slot adjacent to my graphics card lowers the graphics card from 16x to 8x but I haven't noticed any slow downs and the mini monitor now works without delay. I don't know if doing the same with the capture card would have also resolved the issues?
    I also own Blackmagic's Hyperdeck studio which I love. Great device.

    You mention at 7:02 that you can "capture on two (inputs) and do fill and key playback" at the same time, but I have not been able to get this to work. The only way I have found that key + fill is possible is to use the grouping function within the config software, but unlike the decklink duo cards, the only grouping option the 8K has is two groups of two ports. This works for key + fill, but as for the other input, it too is grouped. If you try to use both inputs while sending out key + fill, only one will work. The other is part of the "group," and just gives an error if you try to map it to another channel.
    I'd love to be shown otherwise, but I've been spending hours on this and don't see any other way to make it work. You can certainly mix/match tp taste if all ports are independent, but the only other options are to use the gang of four (8K mode) or two groups of two that you cannot separate in the software.

    Hi Doug. Thanks for covering these cards. Quick question - on the 8K are you able to configure a pair of BNC's as key/fill output and then have the other two configured as inputs ?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All four connections can be either inputs or outputs, so having two as outputs and two as inputs is no problem. In terms of whether two can be setup for fill/key, that’s determined by whatever software you use - whether it can output both fill and key simultaneously to two different outputs or not.

      @@djp_video Thanks Doug. So when you group channel 1/2 as Fill/key pair outputs to BNC 1/2 you're still able to independently assign the other two channels/BNC's as inputs in the balackmagic setup software?

    Hi Doug, time is valuable and it may be me but I found this a bit repetitious regarding the ports and at the beginning slightly confusing regarding their capabilities. You did clarify that it was up to 4k in or out on each or 8k using all four in the end. I don't think a conducted tour of your server, interesting as it is, is particularly relevant to the subject, I think that needs to be a separate video. No doubt others will disagree! What would interest me very much is using DecLink cards to monitor HDR video using both HLG and PQ. BobUK.

    • @ALwinDigital
      @ALwinDigital 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To use a decklink card to monitor HDR, not all decklink cards are capable of supporting a color space wider than Rec709, and with the cards that do support it, you would still need a HDR capable monitor. Especially for the cards that only have SDI out, where if you want to connect to a monitor with HDMI inputs only you would need a SDI to HDMI converter that supports HDR metadata.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't looked into the HDR workflow much. The 8K Pro supports it, and I have both monitors and cameras that will support HDR, but I've never fully produced a project in HDR from start to finish.

      The DeckLink Mini Monitor can capture multi-channel audio if a decoded version is available on HDMI. It will not decode bitstream audio by itself. So the device it's connected to has to handle decoding to multi-channel if you want to be able to capture multi-channel. The video and audio also have to not be encrypted using HDCP.

      The DeckLink cards don't do anything to improve performance. They just add additional outputs/inputs to your computer.
      Your best bet for better performance is a faster video card (GPU), especially nVidia based cards. They're very expensive and really hard to come by right now, but there's very little else you can do to make things run faster without switching to proxy files.

      If it's cutting out when you're switching power sources, it's probably seeing a dip or spike in its input voltage. Try running it off of a battery pack temporarily to see if the problem goes away. If so, you could fix the problem with a capacitor or better quality power supply.

    Hey Doug/all, Been trying to buy the decklink duo 2 but has been out of stock everywhere and we have been waiting for it to be dispatched for a while now...I've seen decklink duo 2 mini available and been trying to find more information on it but no one is really tslking about it
    What's the difference?
    Is it just the size? so can do the exact same thing?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are different cards. Not only is the Mini smaller, and uses smaller DIN connectors rather than BNC, it is also limited to 1080i or 1080p30. It won't do 1080p50/60.
      I know it's more money, but you might consider the 8K Pro. It gives you twice as many inputs/outputs at 4 total rather than 2, and supports 4K at up to 60fps on all four connections. The Decklink Duo models are limited to HD-SDI (Mini) or 3G-SDI (Duo 2). You get a lot more card for your money with the 8K Pro.

    Hi! I have a question regarding capture cards in conjunction with vmix. I'm an AV technician and I've always used video switchers.
    In a real-time event with a person talking on the stage to a large crowd and being filmed and the camera signal goes to the capture board / vmix and then sent a output to a screen in the same room will there be any delay? the question is do the capture cards take some time to process the signal or is it instantaneous/direct?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, there will be a delay. The capture card adds at least a full frame of delay on ingest, the vMix software adds at least a full frame of delay processing the signal, and the output card adds about another half frame of delay on average. Software-based switchers like vMix typically add between 4-6 frames of delay, which is pretty visible. And that's on top of any delay added by the cameras and projector. Camcorder-style cameras usually add 1-3 frames of delay and the highest-end projectors add a frame or two. Lower-end equipment typically has longer delays. If you were, for example, using a Panasonic GH5 with vMix and a consumer projector, you're looking at somewhere upwards of a quarter second delay.
      For those of us that do IMAG like this, we usually avoid software switchers and go with hardware switchers like the ATEMs, which add less than a frame of delay from input to output, and then purchase cameras designed for live production. This gives us delays in the 3-5 frame range, which is visible if you look for it, but generally not noticeable to the untrained eye.

    • @shem44
      @shem44 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djp_video "purchase cameras designed for live production". We usually use Sony camcorders for live feed and streaming and the delay is very low. What camera are you referring that are designed for live production?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shem44 The cameras really made for live production are the ones that have full CCU chains available. But most camcorders can work really well if you don't need CCU functionality. What I meant by my comment is that cameras made for a film-style (cinema) workflow don't really work well for live production.

    What if you're capturing 6K? with the Blackmagic 6K Pro? I don't find a decklink for 6K.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      6K isn't a standard video format. It would have to be conformed to UHD, 4K, or 8K. But that only works for editing -- in terms of capture, the 6K Pro camera only outputs HD on its HDMI port.

      It is capable of both capture and playback. Each of its four connections can either be used as an input or an output. Or, if someone needs 8K support, you link the four connections together as a single input or output.
