I bought a 3x3 mat from Deepcut Studios with an 8x8 Grid for use with my normal wargaming terrain. Was pretty easy to create the 8x8 grid with their custom mat tool. And now it's possible to fit more models in the cube. Now a 4v4 size 1 model close combat actually fit. :)
Mantic games really do seem awesome, thanks for the video! My brother and I both played Beasts of Chaos and Bonesplitterz in AOS so we’re bummed about the recent news and looking to explore new games, we just can’t put more money and trust into GW anymore with how they change things up on you so much. Kings of War and Deadzone have really caught our eye, we’re trying to decide which one to invest in so this is really helpful!
Crazy timing - I literally had never heard of this, or Firefight until a couple days ago. Ordered the starter set last night & today you post a vid 😅 Can't wait to play it!
Been a war hammer fan for 30 years Deadzone is easily my fav game and bolt action. Gone right off GW ! They sicken me lately. But you are 100% right about the models however I’ve really enjoyed painting plague. I avoided zombies 🧟♀️ for reasons you mentioned and went full on leaper spam. Using older sculpt and new had variety
little mistake in the video at 10:04, you don´t get an extra dice for cover, if your are in cover the shooter doesn´t get the 2 extra dice for clear line of sight
One big plus regarding using the Mantic models are the compatibility and crossover with FireFight. So while Deadzone is fantastic, I also really like Mantics bigger game FireFight, witch is more comparable to 40K, but just much better. Deadzone is more like Mantics answer to Kill Team.
Thanks for this video. Those games are great! Your factions of choice are sadly older ones. Lucky a lot of those PVC models are being moved to STLs! Like Nameless. Or Vault Chasers. Which boosts quality by a lot! Both Deadzone and Firefight are super clean and I highlighly recommend them.
an easy solution for using existing mats is to get a clear PVC mat and draw the grit on there and put anything you want underneath, also marking the 3" grid on terrain let you use existing models also for the models, being the focus on quick gaming the models being less detailed and easier to build (or even pre-build) helps with beginners or those that are not heavy into building/painting (and I have seen beginners struggle more with too many details and things to paint, or models taking too much time to assemble) which makes it also a great game to start with the kids, because it is easy to start in both building/painting and gaming
tabletop wargaming shouldn't be about stupidly intricate insanely detailed minis... GW genuinely take the biscuit with both of those and charge stupid amounts for their minis
Having similar sculpts is going to be a issue of the past since GW is mainly jumping to having that same thing in getting rid of the modularity of their models. So I'll take cheaper minis that i can carve and kitbash over expensive single pose GW stuff.
I'm not entirely sure that I'd agree with the quality nowadays. While there's a fair bit that needs updating, the newer stuff doesn't have overdetailed models. You don't also have to use their terrain. Other terain does work
he unfortunately got the mason labs box which is fairly old so he got very out of date models. GCPS marines are a bit dated at this point too although they are still okay. Mantic didn't upgrade their Warpath Universe Lines with Archon yet but once they do the models should play in the same league as modern GW minis do, the newest KoW sculpts already do.
OPR is great as well. I am happy that many Mantic Sci-fi factions are supported in OPR. I still think that Deadzone and FireFight from Mantic are slightly better games than OPR.
Question: How well does proxying work in this game? Or rather, is this fairly model agnostic? I too am someone who appreciates a well designed game, but would rather have the opportunity to use 40K minis that I prefer. For example, is it a fairly easy task to formulate some semblance of a Sisters of Battle force and a Tau force to combat each other? I am fairly confident in my ability to effectively "counts as" models to rules, but am curious what your thoughts on the matter are. (or anyone else who reads this and has an opinion)
I am in a very similar position but I'm not interested in getting the Mantic models as I don't find them appealing. Curious though if the grid would fit the "Into the Dark" Space Hulk terrain from GW.
Agreed 40k isn't fun but their models are also sub par, if you want much better models and a great system you should check out Corvus Belli's infinity the game
I only play infinity and disagree that GW models are subpar. The detail might not be as good as Infinity but the design, pose and sprue design are miles ahead of anyone else. They have been specially designed to be easy to paint, and assemble and look great as an army with many different scales. The models are basically the only reason why it's so popular, 40k the game is really bad.
@@jasonbaxter3658 While the quality of the models is indeed the best of their field, the sprue design is horrendous and is exclusively made to cut costs for GW.
Using warhammer models fighting against other game models in a third game's system is super lame to me. It becomes too much of Spider-Man fighting Goku with action figures.
@246epic true. But the verisimilitude of the universe gets broken. To me, space marines fighting stormtroopers, fighting cylons is just really stupid. But you do whatever.
@@246epicif wargames with plastic minis are lame why even watch the video?. Do you frequently watch thing you think are lame?. It's a little odd but I suppose it could be a hobby?
It’s truly the best gaming experience out there, so fast, so fun!
Hearing the new Halo Game is like deadzone has given me a lot of hope. I think that would be a cool theme for the firefight game
When you start rolling multiple eights, we call it an Eight Train, which are glorious.
I had a peacekeeper with shield die to a single zombie who rolled 9 hits…
Deadzone is what got my friends and I back in miniatures war-gaming. Now we are regularly playing Deadzone and Kings of War games. Love Mantic!
The new Halo game from Mantic is based on this ruleset. Very excited about that.
I believe you can get acrylic grid overlays to use with gridless battlemats.
I've played Deadzone, and I love it. My 2 kids do as well.

That is true I realized later but figured I was just giving rough examples.
@@CrashCourseHobbies yep, not very important for your recommendation. Thanks for the video, I can confirm the game is great!

Looks really interesting, will definately give it a try!

Rule set looks absolutely clever.
Yep arguably THE best skirmish game out there. Just wish the minis were G dub level, some of the newer factions are pretty close though..
The cube movement system is my favorite part of Deadzone!
I first played DZ about 5 years ago. It's probably the best skirmish game I've ever played. I've played a lot!
Having similar sculpts is going to be a issue of the past since GW is mainly jumping to having that same thing in getting rid of the modularity of their models. So I'll take cheaper minis that i can carve and kitbash over expensive single pose GW stuff.
Deadzone is awesome! Super easy to get people not previously accustomed to miniature gaming in as well.
It truly is a well thought out well balanced, fast and fun game
If you subscribe to the Mantic Companion, you get army builders and up to date rules for ALL of their games.
Is the game less competitive then kill team?
Meaning is line of sight and rule interpretation and interaction smoother.
It plays very well for tournament play. The cube movement takes a lot of ambiguity out of wargaming.
Thx for the recommendation

What would be done to improve?

Great videography! Keep up the good work.
Why not get a clear piece of plastic and draw a grid over it to put on the old mats.
I highly recommend checking out SAGA 2 or Turnip 28. The best most elegant style of wargaming
One Page Rules FTW!
You can use a lot of the minis in OPR so there's no sunk cost ... but give Deadzone (and Firefight) a look. Both are superb and streamlined.
