    [iPAD MINI 2021 REVIEW]
Something strange happens to us when we confront a gadget that’s been … condensed. Witness the recurring phenomenon of the mini phone; the mini Cooper; the “mini Winnie.” (Winnebago Man fans here? Anyone?) Point is, things that seem smaller than they “should be” tickle the same parts of our brains that help us believe that pile of circuits is actually our new robot friend (RIP Jibo); and also the aspirational parts of our brains that generations of advertisers long ago learned to leverage.
“Just think of all the things I could do with a tablet this tiny," I thought upon first unboxing the new iPad mini. "That journal I’ve been putting off; the Moleskin replacement that’ll finally get my studies on track; that nascent cooking interest that was just waiting for the right digital cookbook. My new life could be just on the other side of a five-hundred-dollar hit to my charge card.”
Sadly, the new iPad mini will not do these things for you. As my friend David Imel said of a different gadget, “things don’t really make you happy.” BUT. If you have any of those impulses already within you; if you have no space in your pocket for a supersized smartphone (and no space in your life for a full-sized tablet) … well I’ll put it to ya this way: there’s only one reason I wouldn’t buy the new iPad mini, and it probably won’t apply to you.
I'm Michael Fisher; join me for the MrMobile iPad mini 2021 Review!

Also there is the whole repair thing that he glosses over somewhat and the fact that given todays announcements the surface looks the better buy.
Apple is just a horrible eco system for almost everyone that needs a device. Apple is for people that don't.... If that makes sense?

@@davidlane1248 unfortunately this is too true. I've been an Android user since the G1 and even have had shitty Amazon tablets trying to chase the 8" form factor but Android has left their tablet ecosystem dead in the water and I'm not much of a fan of any Samsung products. Unfortunately I'll have to get an ipad at some point, especially for procreate. Either a 8.5" pro or one of these minis but in this regard apples tablets are top dog right now. My first iOS device was a Gen 1 iPad Mini I got for school when I was 11. I loved that thing to bits. When I started trainspotting at 13 I soon found the Save As PDF feature in Safari, so I could look up train times and save them out, rather than hoping I kept that tab in memory. I got an iPad 5 to replace it, and feelings were mixed. Faster and more responsive, the 9.7" screen was beautiful- the iPad Mini G1 was pre-Retina- but it was cumbersome in the military-grade cases my school made us put it in. Since I got a Surface Pro 6, I've been yearning for that smaller tablet experience again, and the build quality problems I've had with both my Pro 6 tablets, and both their type covers combined with the new Mini being everything I hoped it would be might just push me back once and for all.

I love my mini. I got it to use as a clone of my 12 Pro Max. When I am home I’m using my mini and when I’m out my iPhone. It’s been great so far. For those who want to buy the smart folio case: just know that it is not comfortable to hold one handed if you use your pinky for support, and the dark cherry one looks messy as you take it out of the box due to dust and oil from your clean hands. It is a pain in the eye to look at! The jelly scroll is not an issue for me as I see it only if I look for it(only in portrait mode). I am a PC gamer and haven’t been a fan of mobile gaming(as in mobile phones/tablets, excluding switch) but it looks like this mini is going to change my mind! Thanks for the review Michael!

    • @RusticKey

@CGGS_Gaming I've verified and it's due to iPad mini's controller board being in a different orientation, which makes it more noticeable but it's not unique to the iPad mini. As you said it happens on other displays, it's just not as noticeable. It can also be remedied by waiting for vertical sync.

I can totally see people using this as a phone and tablet replacement, _the iPhone Max Note Ultra._ For someone like me who rarely takes photos, gets calls via earbuds, prefers to video chat more, reads frequently and coming from an old Galaxy Note to IOS, the iPad Mini 6 is the perfect phablet. For $780 you're getting USB-C, no Notch, better Speakers, iPadOS 15's multitasking, stylus, charger out of the box, and big Battery - compared to iPhone. Sounds like a really good deal to me as long as you have deep enough pockets.

Reviews like this one are what makes you one of my all time favorite phone and tech reviewers. Some other tech reviewers are just so jaded that all they do is complain about the features they don’t get with such glaring biases it’s annoying.
On the device itself, if they probably had started at 128Gb instead of 64Gb of storage then the entry price would have been more budget friendly. I do hope they change the home screen layout to scale the icons and widgets nearer to the bezel in a future software update. On that note, I’m definitely getting one. 😄

I had a 10th gen iPad th-cam.com/users/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.

A great review as always, also good to see that unused iPad Pro review name revised for good use here. Had I not gotten the iPad Pro and then upgraded to the 2021 model mainly because I wanted a cellular model, I would have gone for the new generation Air or this Mini. Even the maxed out Mini is cheaper than the Pro. I digress though as I do enjoy the Pro.
I do find it fascinating that you're able to daily a Z-flip while using an iPad and MacBook but I guess your app ecosystem is more broad (and you're not glued to iMessage 😅)
Edit: I’ve been using Moft’s folding keyboard on my iPad and haven’t had input issues as far as I’ve noticed. Also I wish I could use a cover folio of some kind with the Pro and Float case but the Keyboard folio wasn’t doing it for me and not sure others would

This video is so good that it makes me want to get that iPad Mini although I don’t need it (I’ve already got iPad Air 2019 that I’m planning to use for 5 more years or longer).

I love the iPad Mini for reading in bed, for surfing during holidays on the beach and for watching movies in the train when I'm out for work. And the kids use it for school. We have the iPad Mini 2 and will soon get the 6th gen.

Small tablets are the best! I think a side by side shot of a Fold and a Mini would have gone a long way, can't believe there wasn't one? For me even the base iPad feels too heavy to pick up and hold for awhile. I've had 2 Minis, a Nexus 7, Fire HD10 (big but light) and now a super cheap Lenovo Tab M8. I wish there was a modern Nexus 7 for Android users.

I’m so happy I got my iPad Pro back in 2020. I’m excited to see what iPad os will become. I did the same thing and got the fold 2 instead of a iPad mini.

You can get the surface duo for the same price. When you unfold it, it is the same size. So depending on your use case, it can be your mini tablet. With enough space and the ability to make phone calls as a bonus.

If only my phone's screen didn't break earlier this year, I would've got this. The wifi 256GB model iPad Minj is just the perfect combination of size, power and versatility. Hoping to get this once I've saved up enough

Oh and I have the Think Outside BT keyboard (same as iGO) and I love it. Wish it had dedicated numbers and a track pad but it has worked well for me for the last 10 years! Perfect for my zfold 4

Loving this Mini iPad. It’s great. Dumped my Z Fold 2. Android apps still suck at that size and I never found use for multiple small windows. I use Dex on my S21U when needed.

Great review as always. Should I become a road warrior again in the near future I will consider a mini gen 6, for now and for my use case, the gen 5 still does a good enough job.
