  • In this series we are looking at the story of Baal from the Ras Shamra texts found at Ugarit. Baal is one of the main Canaanite gods whom Israel was tempted to worship in the Hebrew Bible alongside their pagan neighbors. The more we know about the Baal myth, the more we recognize when the Biblical authors use imagery associated with it and what Scripture proclaims about the TRUE “rider on the clouds”, YHWH!

    This is FASCINATING!
I now see why God sent a drought where neither dew nor rain entered the land of Israel leading up to the event on Mt Carmel because of their Ba'al worship. It was the Lord demonstrating power over the "cloud rider" and THEN the rain came down RIGHT AFTER Ba'al was humiliated by YHWH and Ba'al's "prophets" where unalived! This is simply fascinating depth of insight into one of my favorite periods in the Bible!

Interesting to contrast Baal's demand for a "house of bricks" to YHWH's ambivalence to David's proposed "house of cedar" in 2 Sam 7/1 Chron 17 and Solomon's admission that his new temple can no more contain God's entire essence than can the very heavens and earth (2 Chron 6:18). The similarities of these mythological comparisons (Ras Shamra, Enuma Elish, etc.) with biblical texts are instructive, but the contrasts even more so--and, as I see it, even carry into the New Testament with Paul's statements on the heavenly powers in Ephesians 6, 2 Cor 10, etc., as the one true God exerts dominion over the would-be usurpers that have populated temples and altars since pre-history.

Just truly informative! I have been studying for many years and I was aware that in Scripture, especially in the Tanakh, that pagan motifs were used by the writers to teach the people that the things ascribed to pagan gods were actually the traits, characteristics and power of Jehovah. However, I was not aware of the depth and expansion used. For example, we see the "window of heaven(s) " as a pagan expression of where the rain comes from in Gen 7:11, 8:2 and Mal 3:10. This is eye opening info and very helpful. It leads to more clarity when studying Scripture. I just came across this channel today and regret that it has been unknown to me for the last 25 years! Channels such as this and many others show that the only way to learn about Scripture, for the regular people, people who don't have the time required to learn Scripture on their own, that true learning doesn't come from the pulpits, but is found on TH-cam.

Yes wine is very important to pagan religions, as a matter of fact: Halakha (Jewish law) mandates the use of wine in various religious ceremonies (such as sanctifying the Sabbath and festivals with wine at their start and conclusion, and at circumcision and at marriage ceremonies). The rabbis also prescribe wine for other central Jewish rituals: Kiddush, Havdalah, Passover, and so forth. And it's not just people - God also appreciates wine! Wine is poured out as a libation offering in the holy Temple. At the same time, Judaism recognizes critical dangers of over-consumption.

I don't think Yahweh borrowed imagery from false religion; it's clear in the Bible that concept is repulsive to Him. But, like the Flood, the Genesis account preserves it in accurate though scant detail, whereas after the Flood when people again began to deviate from True Worship, they spread distorted versions of the Memory of real events. I think that's what's happening here. The Canaanites have distorted notions. I mean, if we're arguing from the Biblical perspective, Revelation describes Satan as a 7-headed monstrous serpent 'who misleads the entire inhabited Earth', so it follows that it is he and his agents that spread misinformation since ancient times to becloud the Truth.

This is the inComplete Caananite Elohim,or list of gods.
AKLM: Creatures who attacked Bal in the desert. Some say these creatures are grasshopper-like.
ANATH: This was a Love and War Goddess, the Venus star. She is also known for slaying the enimies of her brother Baal much in the same way Hathor slaughtered much.of
mankind (Anath is heavily related to Hathor). After the Defeat of Mavet and Yam, a feast was thrown for Baal. Anath locked everyone inside, and proceeded to slay everyone (as
they had all been fickle toward Baal with both Mavet and Yam, as well as Ashtar). Baal stopped her and conveinced her that a reign of peace is what was needed. She also has
confronted Mavet and was responsible for Baal's liberation from the underworld. She is the twin sister of Marah. Daughter of Asherah She is also known as Rahmay-
    "The
Merciful", and as Astarte. Astarte is the Canaanite Name of Ishtar; just as Ishtar is the Babylonian Name of Inanna. In all cases the Name means, simply, "Goddess" or "She of the
    Womb'
ARSAY: She of the Earth. Daughter of Baal. An underworld Goddess.
ASHERAH: The Mother of the Gods, Qodesh (just like El), Lady of the Sea, Wife of El. (see El). When the gods decided- to entreat Yam to ease his reign of tyranny, it was Asherah
who went to him and even offered herself. The gods agreed to let her do this, except for Baal who was enraged at the idea. (See Baal). Asherah is said to have given birth to
    seventy qods
ASHTAR: Possibly a male version of Ishtar (Astarte in Canaan), the Venus Star. When Baal was killed by Mavet, Asherah had Ashtar, her son, placed on the throne, However,
Ashtar was not big enough to fill the position, and resigned (quite possibly a relation of the Venus star being the last star to shine before the Sun takes over). Ibelieve one of his
titles is Malik (the King) and other names for him are Abimilki and Milkilu
ASTARTE: A Name of Anath which means "Goddess`, or literally "She of the Womb . Astarte is simply the Canaanite version of the Name Ishtar.
    ATIK:
The Calf of El. Enemy of Baal slain by Anath
BAAL: He is the Canaanite Ruler God (like Marduk). Baal and Yam-Nahar origonally competed for kingship of the gods. The mattes
brought before El, who decided in favour of
    was
Yam. Yam then proceeded with a reign of tyranny over the gods, and none of them felt they had the power to defeat Yam. So, they sent Asherah to entreat him to lossen his grip.
Asherah even. offered herself to Yam. Upon hearing this, Baal was enraged, and decided to defeat Yam. Yam got wind of Baal's plan and sent messengers to El with the demand
that (driver). Baal - He be struck delivered Yam to on him. the E. chest afraid, with agreed Yagrush to Baalthen no avail taunted Then.he thes gods struck for him their on the cowardice- torehead and withz went tO Aymur face and Yam. fell He Yam had to the two earth. weapons After made, Yam's Yagrush defeat, Baal (chaser) had and. palace Aymur built
for himself; closely resembeling the story of Marduk. It also resembles Marduk's story in that the Primeval Waters threatened the gods, and the High God and others were afraid
to face them, with the exception of the soon-to-be Ruler God. The Baal epic then continues to describe his fight against Mavet. Baal is also a Storm God like Marduk, and a fertility
god like Tammuz. Dagon is his father. Baal is the Canaanite God-force (the goddess force seems to De split between Anath and Asherah). Baal's proper name is Hadad, relating to
his storm-god aspect. Baal is really a title, meaning
    "Lord"
Baaľ's residence is upon Mt. Zaphon. He is known as Rapiu (Shade) during his summer stay in the underworld
BAALAT: Patron Goddess of Gubla. Fertility Goddess associated with Hathor and Isis
DAGON: A vegitation God (especially corn). Father of Baal
EL: The Father of the Gods the Creator of Created Things, The Kindly, Kodesh. Asherah is his wife. When he was young, El went out upon the sea, and there met Asherah and Her
companion Rohmaya. He then roasted a bird and asked them if They would be HIs wives or daughters. They chose to be His wives. El mates with these Goddesses and Shachar
and Shalim (Dawn and Dusk) are born. This family then builds a sanctuary and lives in the desert for eight years. This episode may be the closest we have to a Creation story
involving El. El wears bull hors upon his helmet, and He is a grey haired and bearded patriarch. He resides at the Source of Two Rivers' upon Mt. Lel.
ELSH: Steward of El and Baal's house. His wife is the steward of the Goddesses
ESHMUN: God of healing. A great God of Sidon
GAPEN: A messenger of Baal. His name either means Vine or Field. Probably the former.
HELEL: Or Lucifer. The Light Bringer, the Moring Star. Son of Shachar. Helel once attempted to take his Father's Throne, but falled (another myth concerning Venus' place as the
HADAD: See Baal. Originally the Sumer-Babylonian 'Adad
last star in the sky each morning, as if trying to defy the Sun). This is the very Myth which spawned the Christian Myth of the War in Heaven (see Issaliah 14:12- which, in Hebrew,
    says "Helel' and not Lucifer").
    HIRIBI: God of Summer.
HIRGAB: Father of Eagles. Husband(?) of S,umul.
HAURON: A God that is related to Ninurta of Mesopotamia and Horus of Egyp
YAHWEH: Yahweh is added here because there was a short time in which He was simply
cupbearer along with Baal. Later, as the National God of lsrael, Yahweh was equated with'El, and Asherah became His wife. H.
part of the Canaanite pantheon. He was a Son c of El; and he was part of the court of El as

    name
means Sea-River. He was originally given kingship by El, and ruled
as a tyrant over the Gods. Baal finally rose up against him.

The problem is, I never read that from anyone in Academia who can point to ancient written sources. Till now, when archaeologists and scholars find an inscription that mentions Yahweh, they immediately know it's Israelite, because Yahweh wasn't worshipped by the surrounding nations...-which is weird! Everyone shared their deities...except for Yahweh. Egyptians didn't worship him, nor Canaanites, nor Syrians or Mesopotamians...

This is awesome. My mind is exploding with connections. You’ve surely noticed that paganism is coming in hot these days, filling the void left by the apostasy of the Western world. We need to know these stories and their symbols so that when we see them, as we did at the opening ceremonies of that weird sportsy event everyone watches, we will recognize them for what they are. Don’t kill me, but I’d love to hear Jonathan Pageau and Richard Rohlin walk through this story and give us their take on it.
Another connection is with ancient myths the world over about one (or more) of the great global catastrophes of the late Pleistocene and early to mid Holocene. That would include Noah’s Flood but also the events that happened at both ends of the Younger Dryas chronozone (one of which may align with Noah’s Flood, I don’t know - it’s hard to put the pieces together with the currently available evidence). In the Bible, other ANE literature, and oral traditions of people groups from Australia to Siberia to Peru, the references to devastating lightening storms and floods are not merely descriptions of God’s capabilities. They are memories of global catastrophes that occur once ever few thousand years. Sometimes, they are mostly about water, sometimes mostly about fire. It’s been a few thousand since the last one (the Flood). St. Peter told us that the next destruction of the world would be by fire. It may be almost upon us.

Respectfully, in the confusing part, it seems the author by having Anatu express what she has done to Yamm is clearly showing her support / direct involvement (perhaps the warriors she slaughtered was supporters of Yamm) for Balu and accepting equal "credit" for dispersing and disassembling Yamm. On a side note if you read closely neither Balu nor Anatu actually claims to have "destroyed or killed" Yamm but rather has dispersed, bound and destroyed his jaw and smitten (struck) Yamm.

I think perhaps it might be better to look at the similarities in the same vein of Flood stories. It's not that the Bible is ripping off older stories, but rather, everyone has a memory of these things. In this case, perhaps there was more data on the events of the Garden of Eden, the prophecy of the Offspring who would crush the serpent's head. You gotta know that this got distorted among the pagans. Seven-headed serpent? Like how Satan's depicted in Revelation? Wild stuff. Maybe the Israelites were already familiar with the concept well b4 Revelation was penned.

Although, keshet generally means bow, it does not intrinsically mean a bow weapon. For example, keshet is also a rainbow. We derive that the meaning of KShT is (arcing forth in a trajectory). I see a lot of similarities. I was thinking about this the other day, well came down through Noah and his family, and they knew about God before this. Adam walked with God. God spoke to Noah and most scholars believe that Job was around her before Moses and Jacob and all of that. The old world before Judaism knew of God and so much of this was probably known by all these people, Noah and his sons knew stuff about God. They knew of God they knew these rules and ways to live in, though the law hadn’t been created and handed down to Moses, officially, God still spoken to people before this and no one has sons had stories from generations before and a lot of this sounds to me like a lot of very primitive beliefs from people who worship animals and stuff that’s just in their geographical vicinity and sort of make things up around it on his throne, and these things were probably things that everybody knew about God God just hadn’t given us the law at that time but had walked with God and they saw some of this face-to-face and I’m sure he talked to them and especially after they had send God interacted with others and lot of this seems to take basic elements that are kind of a given and then a lot of it just kind of Reminds me of primitive cultures that just sort of make things up about animals and stories and sort of turn into something else like a lot of mythology. Then a lot of it, especially about the brutality and the fighting and all of this stuff you see this a lot and primitive cultures too, and even in modern cultures where people try to boast and liking gang culture where people try to sort of empower themselves by their weaponry, see gang mentality people, and videos, holding their gun sideways and trying to show off and sitting around talking about how bad they are with their weapons and all the things they can do and a lot of it sort of, getting psyched up and adrenaline flow from feeling powerful because of these tools and weapons, and a lot of that from a psychological standpoint comes out of insecurity and trying to present yourself as dangerous so people will respect and fear you. When you’re reading about how he makes a weapon and it doesn’t work so he makes another weapon and crushes the head, I just kind of imagine like these dudes playing with nunchucks and have these cheap swords and stuff sitting around partying and talking about how bad they are, vicious and powerful they could be with their sword as they swing around and break. Mom’s lamp freak out because they’re about to get their butt whooped. I don’t mean to be rude and make fun of people, but this is just the general impression I get from a lot of this is these people who are sort of may be higher ranking and a tribal group or just amongst their friends like a gang sort of thing sitting aroundtalking smack about how cool they were showing off their weapons and talking about how hard-core and bad they were and all that they could powerful weapons😂😂 you see this in a lot of aspects of cultures, guys will come over and show off their tools and weapons and kind of talk. Smack about how no one can mess with them now because they’ve got all these or whatever. now they kind of play with their weapons and show off kind of boasting and showing often trying to put out this image that they’re really really hard-core and dangerous😂 I think a lot of the stuff at the core was probably at one time stemming from the truth about the real God, but then they get off into talking about weird stuff and it just seems very boastful and like bragging and showing off and just kind of petty fake showboating element of it, and we see that in modern society, especially in like a gang society or something where people are growing up in dangerous areas and kind of banned together and try to psych each other up as a way of dealing with the pressures of living in a danger zone, like some of the stuff was talking about some of their gods sounds like a giant anaconda, snake or something they saw and just started calling it a God like a lot of primitive cultures in the Amazon and stuff, worship, jaguars, and tigers and big snakes and just kind of tough animals that are dangerous.
From our religious standpoint, a lot of this seems very foolish, but from a psychological standpoint, it seems very common and reminiscence of behavior, monks, people throughout the ages and generations, and just sort of a common behavior of how people just sit around and talk smack and make stuff up and then a few generations down the line the stories get a little exaggerated on and puffed up a little and it goes from. He was the toughest dude in the neighborhood and a few generations later all of a sudden now he’s the toughest God in this part of the world or whatever . It’s all very predictable. That’s one thing I noticed about reading the Bible and the old testament. Is you kind of surprised a lot because things aren’t quite as predictable and normal as if they were derived out of common human behavior and folklore, the Bible is very specific and it was a lot of God just telling people how it is And unusual situations that were obviously the hand of God. The story sound like some dude built primitive, handmade weapon and smacked a snake over the head like one of those 30 foot anacondas or something and sort of part of a big story in the neighborhood through the telephone game and being repeated over and over through the years, turned it into, a primitive religion. And we still see that in modern times there’s culture even just a couple decades ago that would like about bad bad Leroy Brown and they wrote songs about him and stuff and a dude from a big fight sort of turned into an urban legend, who is bigger than life, and a lot of this kind of has that same sort of tone to it

Obviously the house which Baal wanted to send rain at the proper time (!) means a constellation of the zodiac to which Baal didn't belong at that time.
The dragon Baal defeated is not Tiamat. It is obviously identical with Seth of the Egypts, Typhon of the Greeks and Vrtra of the Hindus which all refers to an space object, hitting the earth but also to the constellation Ophiuchus (the snake bearer).
As 2. Peter 2, 4 shows, Jahweh is identical with Zeus (who has defeated Kronos and thrown into the Tartaros) who has defeated Typhon also. Maybe that was the reason that Israel identified Jahweh with Baal (Hosea 2, 16).

When speaking of "thrones" and "resting places", it is important to remember that to Canaanite and proto-hebraic polytheists, God's resided within physical localities. Temples, nations, geological features. To invade those places was to invade that god's power. To lose those locations was,for those gods to lose a, measure of their power. Historically, the Hebrews were never slaves in Egypt, but they were slaves in Babylon. When their temples were burned down and they were removed from their ancestoral lands there was a crisis of faith. Where did their gods reside now? How could their gods be with them? This was a big part of Yahweh taking acsendency over all of their other gods. As a foreign god, he was always seen as not having a physical domain, which was a weakness before. Now, in exile and slavery, it became a strength as he was not bound to those localities that were lost. (This also explains why Hebreww mythology adopted so many Babylonian themes and imagery.)

11:40 The issue with saying it's a figure of speech is, and that God is merely copying or alluding to Ancient Near East beliefs is basically saying the ultimate reality (which includes physical reality) of the statements aren't true, and that He just mouths that off for our understanding, but basically just fluff of what potential He has, but nothing more.
In the Bible, figures of speech become literal true fulfilled things. For example, the Messianic prophecy that Jesus would not break any bones is a Hebrew idiom and figure of speech for moral integrity of spirit - it became literal and physical in the cross, He literally did not break any physical bones.
God's victory over the Leviathan Satan will be a physical, literal, real one, not just a conquest of and victory over generic evil concept.

@@DiscipleDojo what makes the Bible the word of God is it makes the figurative and metaphorical real and physical in the real world.
Or else the Bible is just like any other religious book with fancy metaphors about their god but no reality, it's just different gods (and God) saying I did this and that, I'm the cloud rider, NO, I'm the cloud rider, you're not, with no substance since cloud riding didn't actually happen if it is just an allusion.
Peter calls the Bible the word of prophecy, and the test of prophecy is if something will actually happen in physical reality, not in metaphorical sense.
If the stuff the Bible says only is metaphorically true, then it fails its own test. By JUST alluding to ANE stories, it's just God trying to flatter Himself with delusions of grandeur in Job or wherever UNTIL it actually happens.

Totally missed it, dude. This is a song or poem depicting the actions of the worshipers as the acts of their deities. They were in drought, and after sacrifices didn't work, they built a temple and dedicated it with sacrifices. When none of thos worked the built a window in the temple. After this the rain came. It is the typical worship of pagans. Nothing more. The Bible didn't take anything from it. They just used phrases and imagery that was common during the era.

JM, you have done nothing in this series so far to separate the God of the Hebrew Bible from the surrounding religions that pre-date it in that region. You assert the earlier religions are false but that the Hebrew beliefs are true. You have not shown how or why the Hebrew is any more than an evolution of the religions of that time and place.

@@DiscipleDojo Unlikely. The Baal cycle cannot be older than the introduction of the chariot from the north, which was an Indo-European invention. Meaning it cannot be older than around 2000 BC at max. The Egyptians adapted it around 1650 BC.
These same Indo-European inventors of the chariot spread the chariot to India and also introduced Rigvedic gods to India. Of which Indra has the same story of defeating a Serpent as a stormgod with a mace/hammer like Thor and Baal for example.
"Vritra (Sanskrit: वृत्र, lit. 'enveloper', IAST: Vṛtrá, Sanskrit pronunciation: [ʋr̩.ˈtrɐ]) is a danava in Hinduism. He serves as the personification of drought, and is an adversary of the king of the devas, Indra. As a danava, he belongs to the race of the asuras. Vritra is also known in the Vedas as Ahi (Sanskrit: अहि, lit. 'snake' IAST: ahi Sanskrit pronunciation: [ɐ.hi]). He appears as a human-like serpent blocking the course of the Rigvedic rivers, and is slain by Indra with his newly-forged vajra."
"Both Indra and Thor are storm gods, with powers over lightning and thunder, both carry a hammer or an equivalent, for both the weapon returns to their hand after they hurl it, both are associated with bulls in the earliest layer of respective texts, both use thunder as a battle-cry, both are protectors of mankind, both are described with legends about "milking the cloud-cows"
Much of Syria, Lebanon and northern Mesopotamia was ruled by Indo-Europeans at some point (Hittites etc) and especially the Mitanni were interesting :
"In a treaty between the Hittites and Mitanni (between Suppiluliuma I and Shattiwaza, c. 1380 BC), the deities Mitra, Varuna, Indra, and Nasatya (Ashvins) are invoked. Kikkuli's horse training text (circa 1400 BC) includes technical terms such as aika (Vedic Sanskrit eka, one), tera (tri, three), panza (pañca, five), satta (sapta, seven), na (nava, nine), vartana (vartana, round). The numeral aika "one" is of particular importance because it places the superstrate in the vicinity of Indo-Aryan proper (Vedic Sanskrit eka, with regular contraction of /ai/ to [eː]) as opposed to Indo-Iranian or early Iranian (which has *aiva; compare Vedic eva "only") in general."
The storm god defeating a dragon/serpent seems to have its origins in the northern Black Sea area and spread from there by the Indo Europeans all over the known world.

Does it come across as natural progression of culture or adapting the deity to fit the current circumstances? Or both? If the latter two, does this create a theological problem?

How do you know for sure that Habbakuk draws from this epic and rather that it's not the other way around? Perhaps there were older oral traditions concerning Yahweh that the Baal worshippers drew from. It also draws from the story of the Israelites in Exodus describing themselves as grasshoppers. Personally, after archeological study, I believe Abrahams leaving Ur to have occurred the era either during immediately following Sargon the Akkad. Many believe there to be a similitude between Ea as described by priestess Enhuedanna (Sargon's niece) and her Goddess Inanna (supposedly the niece of Ea who stole all the maces/me's by getting Ea drunk and seducing him. I believe this because of how Inanna is discussed in I believe this story to be a deeper metaphor for what was described in Genesis concerning the early days of man (in Mesopotamia). It says that in the early days, man called upon the Lord (Yahweh) for they still knew him. But as time went, they fell for the seductions of the Nephilim (sons of God) who had fallen from Heaven. These fallen ones taught the humans things like child sacrifice, seduction/manipulation, witchcraft and sorcery/divining, imperialism and domination, etc When you start to look at things through this lens, these mythologies compared to the Biblical accounts make actual historical sense! I definitely recommend diving more into the old testament books. There is a lot there to explain the differences and similitudes. One could write an entire book on it!
