  • In this series we are looking at the story of Baal from the Ras Shamra texts found at Ugarit. Baal is one of the main Canaanite gods whom Israel was tempted to worship in the Hebrew Bible alongside their pagan neighbors. The more we know about the Baal myth, the more we recognize when the Biblical authors use imagery associated with it and what Scripture proclaims about the TRUE “rider on the clouds”, YHWH!

I grew up reading the mythology of ancient Greece and then other myths as well. It has been awhile since I delved into the Caananite stories. I love these tales from the dawn of history. Thank you for doing this and I appreciate your connecting these with the biblical culture. The story of God's people did not develope in a vacumn.

This series has been great! It gives much more context to the phrasings in the Bible. I’ll be tuning into your channel for more. I’m in my second go round in the Bible, this time in chronological order and it’s given much more insight historically but I have more cultural questions so my next go round in the Bible I hope to look deeper into the cultural contexts of the Israelites and surrounding cultures. Especially when I get to Exodus. We learn so much in school about Egyptian and Roman-Greco culture but trying to parallel that with the Bible has been a little challenging for me (I’m not historian). And to see videos like yours that delve into ancient texts from other cultures it gives much more context to what I’ve read in Genesis and I appreciate the references back to the Bible when you compare figurative language used. This was really good. It shines light on the idea that all the stories are shared from different perspectives depending on the culture doing the writing. Keep up the good work! This was insightful.

This just gives so much validity to the historical reality of the Bible. ❤ The reflections of different cultures of the time being echoed in the biblical illustrations, depicts God as the true God defeating the gods that other countries worshipped at the time. It’s kinda hard to say the Bible is just a bunch of mythical stories with the deeper connections between the Jewish imagery of God and knowing they were paying attention to those people around them culturally. These are outside sources confirming the Real God even defeats their idols. God doesn’t separate himself from other cultures but battles them giving them the PROOF they needed to believe in Him like when he took on all the Egyptian gods through Moses & the plagues 🙏 those specific plagues weren’t on accident

    Nice.
material that for so long, apart from occasional hints was reserved to the realm of the academics.
... long considered 'too much information' for us ordinary folks
... and even still today often warned by pastors to stay away from - not saying they are wrong/bad, but overprotective - like telling children to stay out of the deep end of the pool.
It's refreshing that people like you, Heiser, NT Wright, Carmen Imes, Tim Mackie, Chad Bird, (not saying you all agree with each other) are willing to put this info out for those of us ready and willing and even hungry (though perhaps almost but not as hungry as Mote) to go to the deep end and beyond ... - of course (as you all advise) always with huge doses of "Berean" discernment.
as an example - a (not the only) takeaway has been: long heard academics saying portions of the Bible 'are polemic'
    - now (and really clearly shown) actually get that
    - and yes, that really does elevate understanding of the greatness and goodness of YHWH and his Word (the Bible - it's truthfulness and completeness and reveal even more the narrative therein.
Almost like they say 90% of DNA is called 'junk DNA' - though they admit we would die without it
similarly large portions of the Bible were likewise thought of as (being nicer) "less useful" background info/scenery ... now not so much ... waaay not so much!

The story of Jonah and the reference in the new testament makes a whole lot more sense if you read it that way.
Jonah gets eaten by "death/Mut", he spends 3 days and nights in the realm of Mut and then "God" made/requested Mut to spit him out back to the surface (land of the living).
In other words : he dies, is dead for 3 days and nights, and is then back from the dead. Exactly the same as Jesus.

This is very interesting. The only god outside of all the scrabbling and politics is death. None of them can stop, reverse, or refuse death. But here comes Israel into the region saying that our God reigns over death. He will rescue His faithful from the domain of death. And one day, as Jesus says, he will forever defeat death.

The ancient babylonian stories of deities is where the real history of humanity is exposed. Most of the stories in the Torah and the bible were most definitely copies from the sumerian texts. It is recorded from the book of genesis that Abraham was told to forego all other gods from his fathers house. This implies there have always been others but Abraham chose to serve one. There have always been a king of the gods who is the most high, but he definitely did not create humanity. His children did.

When Noah, his sons, and family came out of the boat, his son Ham was not the blessed one. Ham left the family and brought the line of Nimrod (the King that was worshipping the false idols) this was against the words of the God of Noah, which is The Father The Son and The Holy Spirit. Our true God then destroyed the Tower of Babel and the peoples went all over the earth from there. That’s where all of this came from and how we have a bunch of tiny cultures worshipping false idol gods or gods that were copied from true God and created to be what they wanted by the king of that peoples. That was exactly what God said not to do. Nowadays we see this might have been done on purpose by God because he hardens the hearts of his enemies (building them up in their culture making them feel mighty and all powerful) in order God can come back and break them down in 1 day destroying their entire worldview, instigating a massive revelation to those people. Much like what will happen in our tribulation, currently the evil and godless people are in high and mighty places in the world, they hold power wealth and feel powerful inside. But they are evil and wicked in all their heart. It is these people that when Jesus comes back for tribulation he will throw all wicked and unrighteousness and unbelievers into the fires of hell. Thereby destroying these wealthy wicked people in one fell swoop and bringing them so low to teach them who is God and that righteousness is the truth and he is the Alpha and Omega.

Read up on Leviathan and his Neesings. I think that's the "Snorter".
Ditdn't Abram leave the Akkadian empire when he had his journey?
    Much earlier than Canaan.

So why should I think the Bible is any less fairy tale nonsense than this? Of course, it's fascinating historic literature. But no one should be basing a moral code on scribblings of people who didn't understand how rain happens.

Ugh, my guy, you are talking about hebrew scriptures when the bloody hell did that become christian text? All you are doing is further proving the point that the hebrews worship baal. And all the old testament is really Baal worship. You do know these texts predate hebrew. You've said it. But then say they hijacked the story to make it relatable? No. Its the same story. Occams Razor....
