- Bringing home a new bird, what to avoid!
Today's video is all about bringing a new bird home for the first time and what it's really like for them!
The video is presented in a kind of tongue in cheek silly way, but the message I am trying to get across is an important one!
Coming into a new home for the first time can be a very scary and confusing experience for a bird. So it's important to understand that and try our best to help them settle in and relax!

You should give him a name and make it a recurring character. Amazing acting, self made stunts. Brilliant addition to the video.
Haha I really should! He is a true hero!
Although, he already has a job during our consults demonstrating target training and various techniques during calls!
Bird: Imma yeet myself at this wall 😂
I mean...When you're flying around with an over enthusiastic human about, what can you do?!
This came up in my recommended this morning. The perspective was great! The throw at the wall and disclaimer got me laughing 😂. Now gonna pop over to the 'what to do when you get a new bird' video lol
lol glad you enjoyed! I hoped this video would get more traction and provide a tongue in cheek explanation to anyone thinking of getting one!
I loved this, not only did it give me a good giggle, but that part about about developing human relationships is the same with birds made so much sense to me as an easy to understand way of how to go about a mutually respectful relationship with our birds. 😊👍🏽👌
Thanks Yamuna!
I think it's so important to carry over the lessons we learn interacting with each other to animals. Not the ones where we expect human traits from them, but more just respecting them and their needs!
I plan on doing a video all about our feelings/their feelings!
@@TheParrotTeacher oh great idea, we often as pet owners project our needs and feeling onto the pet without really considering as a pet bird what do they need from us, not just in regard to food as etc
@@yamunadevi68 very true! It’s that projecting that sometimes leads to issues!
David, your sensibility, kindness & realness is so helpful. This video was great 👍🏻 Thank you ☺️
Thank you Nitzy, very kind of you to say!
Haha brilliant! I love the bits where you’ve got the camera in the cage. 😊😊
Glad you liked it!!
thank you again for another helpful video. i noticed a lot of improvement with my conure Peaches once i considered her perspective. i no longer reach into her space. i let her come to me and reward her with treats.
Hey Rob,
Glad it was useful! It's always so important to respect our little guys!
Great video David. Althought I expected a new bird in your flock from the thunbnail😉. But I get value informations and to use the plushy for explaining is a great idea👏👏👏
Haha no, no new bird...yet. We are limited by space and time!
Wish I had this when I brought mine home. Glad though it can help others. Good advice.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the info. I will be getting 2 rescue budgies on Monday. Looking forward to it. Cheers
Hey Yves,
awesome on rescuing the little guys! I really want to get some rescue budgies too as they are so charming and often discarded!

Where did you buy the outdoor perch with confetti bedding in it?
Hey Carolyn,
It's a Rainforest T-Bar Stand. We originally got it from a place called Zooplus
@@TheParrotTeacher thanks so much that’s great. I’ll check it out! Our George would love it! I love watching the videos Sophie and yourself post. They have been so helpful in keeping our boy happy!
@@carolynyoung8958 It's a pretty useful perch!
We use it for training, snack breaks and they forage in the base too!
Glad you enjoy!
L 👍 Beautiful 🍀
Thank you!
Please help! I have a pineapple conure who is 1.5 years old got him at 13 weeks. He has developed this thing for pulling out my hair!! He will pull out any type of hair including eyebrow facial hair, my arm hair idk what is up with that ? He has been doing it for the last 2 weeks I’m going to go bald! Do you know why is he having this behavior? Is this normal? What should I do?
Hey Fabiola,
It isn't uncommon for conures to groom us humans. Some can even pull up hair a little bit (Scampi does it to Sophie, although he doesn't actually pull hairs out)
If he is doing this I'd try to look at the reasons why? Is he hormonal? Is he doing it out of frustration or an attempt to over preen you? Is he trained/ getting excess energy out?
In terms of solutions, I'd look at trying to redirect the behavour through training such as target training. I'd also look at not allowing him on areas that he's doing this on. That could mean temporarily covering up until the problem is a little better. If it's hormonal, hormone management along with extra preening toys in his cage.
Sadly beyond some catch all fixes I can't offer too much specific advice without looking into his situation in more detail. If you feel it needs a really detailed look you could consider booking a consult with us to discuss it. If not, the tips above should help!
