Briggs and Stratton 675 Series Easy Start Engine - Running poorly Part 2

- Update: I put everything back in the stock locations. I cleaned the carb. It runs at full throttle just fine. But the idle is constantly up and down. It will never settle into a smooth idle. Just oscillates back and forth. Ultimately, it's usable and works. But, Briggs and Stratton makes crap.
I’m glad I’m not following your advice. That is the auto choke, and it was in the right place initially. You have other problems in your carb somewhere. I really think people should know what they’re talking about before giving advice on TH-cam.
Old Video..... simple design engine, very reliable and easy to work on.
Taryl would have had this set right and up and running like a champ in about 3 mins flat!
I see a bunch of people claiming it is the carb and calling him an idiot. Guess what it can in fact be a bad thermostat. I actually had trouble about one month after I bought the mower new with
it being hard to start and not running smoothly. It would surge and
drop rpm all the time. I pulled the small plastic side cover above the
air filter off and found the throtle arm that is pushed by the
thermostat was hard over in on direction. I just pushed on the lever and
it now had all sorts of movement and the mower started on first try and
ran smoothly. The first year I did that every time before I started it
and it always started up easily and ran fine. The second year I had zero
troubles, Now three years later it became hard to start again and would
suddenly drop RPM. I pulled it apart and checked the Mag gap and got it
dead center on tight on 8 and 9 does not fit in the gap. Now the mower
was cold in a 50 degree garage and yet the thermostat was almost full
forward. Attempting to move it all all and it did not move. 20 minutes
of blasting it with carb cleaner and it lossened up. The mower started
right up and ran smoothly again but after testing I shut it off and then
tried to restart it and the RPM had dropped and it was surging again. I
shut it off and pushed back on the throttle butterfly again and got
back all the movement so it started right away and ran smooth. It
appears some of them are jammed or binding and not working like they
should. It should have a coil spring inside that tightens up with heat
but should still move freely. I will replace that thermostat.
Had the same problem. It had nothing to do with the thermostat, his is connected incorrectly in the video. The silver bar should be inside the black loop. Completely cleaned the carb as stated by another commenter and machine is running like new. Thank you Michelle or happy jack.
Thanks I was searching for a part diagram to see how this is put back together. Do you know of a diagram for this engine. The engine model number is rusted making it difficult to read.
I found a toro mower in the garbage and it had this problem, after watching your video i got it going strong so if your solution kills the motor in the long run then so be it. Thanks for the help
I had the same problem until watching your video. My mower finally running like new.. thanks for your help !!
Thanks to your video, I finally got my lawn mower with the same engine running again!!!! Thanks so much!!!
that is the choke choke choke choke NOT throttle plate!!!!!
it should be wide open unless engine is cold starting.
the throttle plate is further back in carb.
I'm curious as to how/why the thermostat arm got in front of the air vane in the first place.
I was having the same issue with the same motor on my lawn mower. I followed your video and the mower is no working without the use of a sponge, tie wrap and other assorted remedies. The first time idle was still struggling a bit but after the mower warmed up it ran fine. I hope it works the same or better the second time out. Thanks for the video it was a huge help!
I found that putting an extra washer on the governor arm above the carburetor, I suspect since these engines parts are made of plastic parts they warp.
that is the choke, the ready start system by B & S it is designed to be fully open when hot. Learn how to properly clean a carb and your problem will be solved
Really!?!?! Wow, you're so awesome. Golly gee wiz, Beeev! You really know your stuff! No really, two people didn't already beat that point to death, so I'm so glad you took your time to make what is not the third comment on the B&S Ready Start system. Gosh, you're my hero!

Hey 2511. Why does mine have to be fully closed to run.
I mean the choke butterfly has to be completly closed or it runs horribly.
Your idle problem maybe that it needs a small adjustment with the throttle tension spring. Or its possible the carb isn't completely cleaned out. If you cleaned the carb out and not flush the gas tank out, dirt and grim will just clog the main jet back up. causing it to run or idle funny. Another thing to check are the gasket and or "O" ring on the carb.. If they are worn out it can create a vacuum leak causing it run poorly. .Also make sure your filter is clean.
I have this engine on a Toro mower and know exactly how it works. That is NOT the throttle butterfly you are moving, It is the CHOKE. The be-metal thermostatic spring and the plastic flywheel vane replace a manual choke/primer. The choke is supposed to open wide as soon as the engine starts.
The throttle is inboard of the choke. I can see it in your vid. By closing the choke you are overcoming a lean condition or governor/carb/.throttle issue. I'd write lots more but am limited in size.
As far as your thermostat, It looks like its working properly "Springing back and forth as the temp of the engine changes. I'd defiantly put it back the way it was designed to go. Although it is a poor design. You can adjust the thermostat fork by gently bending it out barely touching the Vane-Air (only when COLD or fully closed.)
B&S are well built engines. They are just VERY sensitive to every little element. They can definitely be a pain at times.. I hope this helps! Good luck!
dude the plastik-part is on the wrong side!
thing logical - you see the round side on the thermostat its becouse it is changing the neveau when moving
thats the choke plate assembly, not the throttle plate assembly the air vane goes inside the the thermostatic lever, not outside like your doing, assemble it inside the thermostatic assembly align marks on both the plastic vane and thermostatic assembly should work fine .But dont confuse choke and throttle like your doing!

I had the same problem, but it turned out not to be the auto-choke. The throttle plate should be wide open when at operating temp. The real problem is lack of fuel. It turned out to be a clogged jet in the carb. I was able to clean it out without having to remove the carb. Search TH-cam for examples of how to do this. Mower is running like new now.
Be sure your fuel is fresh, gasoline with ethanol is rated stable for 30 days, after 60 days it's time to get rid of it.If you have old fuel in your tank or gas can you need to empty and let dry before refilling. The crappy gas we have is what corrodes, plugs and sometimes destroys carburetors. If it's still searching at idle it is either running too lean, (carb service, air leak, old gas), or the spring to the governor could be stretched.
Here's my video on this engine, it's the same just on a Craftsman lawn mower: th-cam.com/video/sYMqO5H6T4o/w-d-xo.html
Nice Presidential Solution !!!
Your "REAL" problem is the spring... The spring currently holding the Air Vane for the Autochoke System is crap and wears out quickly. Change it to a quality spring of bigger gauge and install it. What is happening is the Air Flow off the fly wheel is stronger then the spring and pushes the Air Vane forward which is closing the choke before the engine has started to warm up thus causing it to stall. Your fix works, but it is only a temporary fix. Upgrading the spring is a simple fix for a very stupid B&S design.
What's the model number on that engine? It's off a pressure washer?
I have the same power washer. I replaced the carburetor and now it won't start at all. It's not turning over or even trying. I did check the spark plug and it is arcing. Any suggestions?
I am having the same problem as you. It was a broken timing gear on mine. It's plastic.
After hearing it run u need to adjust the governor. Listen to the people in the comments and clean the carb and adjust the gov.
You've the thermostat arm in the wrong place dude, it should be sitting loosely inside the black vane thingy.
omg...this is like listening to my wife !
Your wife? My condolences.
Choke. Choke. Choke the wife lol
Dont know anything bout small engines. But my toro ez start wouldnt idle with out surging.
So i tried to see if something my have gone bad. I moved the thing yall call a thermastat to the front like this dude did and put a washer beneath the head on the air throttle to hold it back.
I dont think my choke is supposed to be all the way closed but is the only way it will run.
Any body know why.
Id like to put it back the way its supposed to be but it wont run that way.
So you’re keeping it partially choked all the time might be time to watch some Terrell fixes all videos buddy
Thanks for the tip! I took it all back apart. I removed the carburetor and it was a bit dirty inside, so I cleaned everything thoroughly. I undid the changes I made and it runs well under load, but the idle is still weird. I can see the throttle constantly adjusting at idle and thus the engine rpms are constantly up and down with the occasional "pop". If I hold the throttle still in just the right position, it will idle fine. Any advice?
Your carburetor is dirty. Totally clean the carburetor and your problem will be fixed.
Carb was already completely cleaned. It runs perfectly under load, but will not idle correctly. Doesn't matter though. I start it up, let it warm up a bit, I use it full throttle mostly and shut it off. It's getting me by. If it breaks or does any worse, I'll just replace it with something better.
TheAristotleQ Your video says " I don't understand why" and I told you why (above). If you choose not to listen then someone with the proper skills, will get this mower, fix it and triple or quadruple their money. Thanks.

Thanks for your input. However, I had already done what you said to do. You said, "totally clean the carburetor". The carb had already been completely disassembled, soaked multiple times in carb cleaner, including overnight. Flushed repeatedly with carb cleaner in between soakings. The carb basically looked brand new when I put it back on. The gas tank and lines were completely flushed out. It's not that I am "choosing not to listen". BTW, It's a pressure washer. Not a mower. And if I don't listen to you, "someone with the proper skills" doesn't get my pressure washer by default. The pressure washer runs fine in use. It idles erratically and has nothing to do with the carb. It's the throttle control mechanism that is swinging the throttle plate open and closed, rhythmically, like a kid on a swing. Like Byeager52 pointed out, it's a poor design on B&S's part.
@@TheAristotleQ You keep referring to the choke mechanism as throttle plate. Many people have corrected you and gave you correct advice but, unfortunately, you are not listening my friend. No offence. Take care.
Just power washed my entire wrap around back patio, my dogs' outdoor rug, my block wall, my grill and my smoker. Ran great the entire time. However, now the water pump is leaking a bit of water and oil. Probably sat in storage too long. 3 summers in Arizona, in an outdoor shed likely killed the seals. Hope they make an o-ring kit as the pump is $175. I paid $250 for it new. Not buying a pump. Will scrap this POS and buy a machine that's going to work.

If you haven't figured out your problem with this engine I suggest you watch this video showing the proper positoning of the air vane and the thermostat. th-cam.com/video/AZa9qrPhFI4/w-d-xo.html
Your way off. As others have said, you have stumbled on the notorious B&S Ready start. Your "throttle plate" is in fact the CHOKE. By forcing it closed you are running a rich fuel mix, your problem is elsewhere.
You're late to the party. I've put everything back to the way it was after Byeager52 corrected me. I thoroughly cleaned the carb. It basically boils down to fact that the B&S throttle control mechanism idles the engine very poorly. It works well at full throttle, but the idle is very inconsistent. If you run it with the air cleaner assembly pulled off, you can see the throttle plate swinging open and closed rhythmically like a kid on a swing. Like I said, at this point, I don't care anymore. It works well enough to do what I need it to do. I'll run it until it breaks and then I'll buy something more industrial, preferably with a Honda engine.
TheAristotleQ
Aye, Honda engines are much much better. If you have properly cleaned the carb and your still surging (the anomaly described) its probably a governor spring or possibly an air leak - check for a cracked manifold (they tend to crack at bends and can be very hard to spot) pipe or perished carb gasket. If you are happy as it is, then all quiet on the western front :)
Just replace the thermostat arm.
i wedged a piece of wood on my governor.. until it died.. now it doesnt want to start! i hate briggs and stratton now
Don't follow this guy's advice.
That's a very basic 190cc four stroke engine. Hate to see you work on ANY car.
How embarrassing.
Steve S hate to see you living! fucking loser!
Model no 580.752190 Ozzy morales what part was it that you replaced?
