I totally agree. The more it frustrated me at the beginning the more it made me want to do it. Plus being outside is awesome!
being outside is the best thing about plener painting. you are one with the nature, you feel that wind that preceedes the storm, you hear the grasses, leafes, birds. its the pures form of paiting one can do, to capture what you realy saw. paiting fro mthe photo is fake. at least to me. AND once you did plener paiting it is a form of your captured memory.

list (cause I need notes)
1. be patient, practice
2. use the same materials, be consistent as every other factor will very ex. lighting, location, etc.
3. sketch, at least 3, what is the scene about - emphasis
4. always take a photo, photos here and there - great reference
5. not about painting fast
6. translating not documenting
7. look for verticals, helps balance the painting
8. bring a second canvas
9. don’t worry about people passing by
10. doesn’t need to be perfect, its about the feeling then, not a document of, can touchup later on

I was asked to help a group of giggly girls to paint a copy of the last supper. I had to help paint 13 figures 4 times each. It made me able to put figures in my landscapes. It was haaaard, and I didn't really like it very much, but a win is a win.

If folks criticise the painting simply tell them that the painting is in the "ugly stage", and will get much better as it reaches completion.

Great timing, Chris! I loved your advice about plein air painting and I think some of it also applies to painting from photos, which, with a disability, I often do. I’ve felt stuck for a while trying to figure out the ‘missing link’ between painting via your fantastic tutorials and also trying to figure out my own interpretation of one of my own photos. Finding an interesting photo and then manipulating the scene to create a good composition has eluded me. Creating thumbnails really is key, as Ian Roberts would say, and I find that it’s what I struggle most with.
With your background in film, it really enhances your ability to translate an understanding of composition using terms we know, such as ‘main actor’. Thanks for helping to bridge my gap of understanding.

Oh and I have a suggestion for another video: "Things to put in your Plein Air-kit". Like say I go outside to plaint now when spring is coming, what do you think I should include in my "kit" besides paint tubes, brushes, thinner, oil, paper....?
Coach, I've got a question: Last sumemr I did some plein air paintings. :) I used acryllics. And it was fun! But since then I got into oil painting and would love to use oil outside.
But there was an upside to acryllics: They dry quickly, I mean when I was done I could wait 10 minutes and then start packing, I could put the paintings in the back of my car before driving back.
But I am not sure how I would do that with my oil paintings?
So my question is: How do you transport your paintings after a plein air-session?
Hi Chris, I'm allergic to terpentine (and "whithout odour" doesn't change anything !). So I use Liquin Original. But I feel that I don't make the most of oil paint. Could you give me an other option for terpentine ? and in that case, I could use leneed oil as well. Thanks in advance for your answer !
How would you insert shadow light values when you're using something that doesn't have any?
I'm wanting to copy some scenes from an anime for my kids and there is no definite light source.

So are you saying that I can use my knowledge of shadow on a form to make shadows instead of following exactly the light? This would make it easier because I have done a lot of form and shadow study

@@azavial I haven't tried this yet with oils, but I have all sorts of media papers: watercolor hot/cold/and rough, acrylic, mixed media, dry media, etc. More so curious on how it would look to prep paper for oils
@@jeanetted6806 in a video he suggested canvas paper which i just ordered some of. he also said he primes with a layer of burnt sienna before painting! he just rubbed it in with a cloth or something. i haven’t tried it yet. i’m sure you can find a video somewhere, i know bob ross does that too

I noticed you draw everything with burnt umber ( or something similar) then paint in your darks. I tried that and my color, especially my blue sky came out muddy. Do you use acrylics to draw with then oil? How do you get the drawing part to dry so it doesn’t mess up your colors? Also, I was facing the sun that day, so that may have been what washed out the color. I am an k-5 art teacher, so I know color theory, and understand about color opposites. Thank you, and I think your paintings are great!
There a huge number of things that can be. One are you thinning your underpainting with enough truperian or a a fast drying medium that super lean or said to be used as a underpainting? Or you using good brush technique ? Or you slowly increasing the fat level as you paint adding layers of your painting wet on wet. If you not using good brush technique you will dig up the layers you place down and if a different tone or color you going for it will mix and dirty your layers. Don’t hold your bush like a pencil and use a light touch loading your bush with paint and go back to your paint on your palette until you have it cover. People have found using a long hair brush and help stop from digging layers as the hair are very long from the ferrule and you have to make yourself push beyond hard crazy to scrub the paint than to apply it, plus it known to hold a lot of paint. But as you can see there can be many causes. I never had that issue but I seen it happen in a book I read. Don’t be afraid to thin that paint like ink, it’s a underpainting and the other layers will keep it from flaking off if you make it to thin. Another technique I saw which I haven’t tried was one artist use oil base oil sticks or color pencils to under down his under painting. I haven’t tried that be I have use charcoal like some old masters use to paint they underpainting with. Yes it darken it a little bit but your suppose to paint from dark to light anyway trying to darken a super light color using a lot of paint and that why a lot of artist paint that way.
