My Lady died on April 8, 2013, far too soon, from cancer. The world is a lesser place without her. But a song for her is in my heart. I wish I had the talent to share it with the world.

My son in law died Sunday, June 30th, 2013 in a drowning accident. His name was Adam. This song was always special to me. Now it has a much deeper significance. I consider Jackson Browne one of the best songwriters ever. R.I.P. Adam. I hope you find peace.

Hadn't listened to this in decades, it is more meaningful now following the death of my son who definitely stopped singing in the middle of his song.

A good friend, in a time when I needed one, played this song for me. Thank you, Matthew. Soooo many years ago, but that moment of bonding between the two of us resonates through the decades since.

One of the most powerful comments I've ever read. Your words evoke every bit of emotion the song listening to does. As long as there's been a night and day there's been a a measure of happy/sad... good/bad, up and down, and so on... They are incapable of being when one is without the other. We must try to embrace and accept both emotions. with trust in ones self to find the balance between the 2.

Song For Adam made me cry the first time I heard it and it can still move me to tears 41 years later. I can't think of one contemporary songwriter that can move me the way Jackson Browne does.

Reminds me so much of a friend that I spent my youth with, hitchhiking and riding freight trains...we were some of those lost boys...like the one's in the movie "My Own Private Idaho"...it was set in Portland, and that was the city that we settled in for awhile. So painful to think about now, although I learned a lot from those lessons...living on the streets...a lost boy...

"Still it seems he stopped his singing in the middle of his song" ...... This could have been the only lyric Jackson ever wrote in his life, and it would have placed him among the Greats.

Jackson has been accused of writing sad songs. One of the greatest writers and singers of that generation, he tells the story the way it is. This song ranks with For a Dancer as perhaps one of Jackson's best. And maybe one of the best songs ever written. Thanks Jigson. (Yes I know that is a typo but it is our family's nickname for this great performer and humanitarian.) Get it?

David Geffin apron hearing this song know he needed to sign Jackson Brown. Despite others who didn’t think he had what it took to become a rock star, Geffin ignored their opinions. I’m glad he did.
I liked this song the first time I heard it.

I have loved this song since it first came out, I would play it over and over but I never really knew why I liked it so much. Now I am much older it means so much more to me as I can relate it to friends I have lost over the years, but I can also relate to it myself as I often wonder about the place my candle has lead me to and the person I have become, I wonder where my candle will lead me to from here?

Such an insighful song. Inspiring, sad, lament, reflecting life ...how short it can be just like a candle's light burning. I always loved this song, it's meaning now is deeper. I lost my mom and mother in law in the same year...."I'm holding out my only candle though it's so little light to find my way....

Been playing this a lot recently as a boy in my school just killed himself.
He was the younger brother of a girl I used to be friends with; I didn’t know him too well, occasionally we spoke - he was funny - but I wouldn’t say we were close friends.
While I am of course saddened by his death, as anyone is when someone as young as 14 dies, I wouldn’t say i’m grieving - not to the extent that his family is at least; I haven’t cried or anything because in my day to day life, things are indifferent. However, his sudden suicide has had me thinking quite a bit these past few days. I knew he was troubled, but I never knew he was that dejected, and although he was kicked out of school a lot he was extremely smart - I do wonder what he could’ve been if he had tried, he had potential.
Im just rambling here in the youtube comment section, just comprehending his death, and this Jackson Browne song is speaking to me.

Gregg Allman covered this on his last album before his death. The saying was this song hit him hard because it reminded him of his late brother Duane - and in one verse, he couldn't finish singing and broke down in tears (although you don't hear it on the recording). Powerful.

Great song, great singer, great story. Not many contemp artists can craft this depth and poignancy into a lyric. Thanks for posting lb2fast2.. Btw I spotted a couple of minor errors in your lyric text. It's important that they are exactly as he sings it, so proof carefully - more than once. If a JB line doesn't make sense, you know something must be wrong..

I first heard this song on his album, "Late for the Sky" (1974). My memory may be a little fuzzy, but this sounds slightly different from how I recall that version.
And while this runs 5m24s, Wikipedia tells me that the Late for the Sky version goes 6m18s.
Before the lyrics start here, there's a misspelling of "friend."
There are a few discrepancies between this soundtrack, and the overdubbed lyrics in this video (the two marked with - - - * are corrected in the Description):
1st verse, last line: "but I'm thinking that he fell"
1st chorus, 6th line: "But I feel just like a candle in a way"
    2nd chorus, 6th line: "Til I fear before I end, I'll fade away" - - - *
3rd chorus, lines 6-8: "Yes, I feel just like a candle in a way"
    "I hope I get there,
    "but I never pray" - - - *
My "baby" sister once remarked that Jackson Browne wrote basically two kinds of songs - totally frivolous ("Take It Easy," "Running on Empty"), and totally deep (this one, "Fountain of Sorrow," "Before the Deluge," etc.)
This is one of my favorite songs of all time, for how deeply it touches me. Since it was born. (I'm within a year of Jackson's age. Curiously, so are Steve Miller and Arlo Guthrie.)
    Fred

    • @tanglewoodband1955
      @tanglewoodband1955 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Unaware of this. To my knowledge Browne's Late For The Sky album has the songs: Late For The Sky; Fountain Of Sorrow; Farther On; The Late Show; The Road And The Sky; For A Dancer; Walking Slow; and, Before The Deluge. Song For Adam is not on the album Late For The Sky. Where I am familiar with it is on the album Saturate Before Using. It could easily be on one or another greatest album but it is not on Late For The Sky.

    • @ffggddss
      @ffggddss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tanglewoodband1955 You're right; I stand (actually sit ;-) corrected.
It was on his 1972 debut, self-titled album, _Jackson Browne,_ where it runs 5m22s.
I was confusing it with another song of his from that era, _Before the Deluge,_ which *is* on "Late for the Sky," and *does* last 6m18s.

this story, as if it needed more, has an even sadder aspect. Adam's father made his way to a JB concert, suppose hoping he would play this. He did, Adam's father stood up, and yelled, "this is about my son". And it is. Look it up, won't exactly make you feel good about mankind, but then, many more good people to offer a hand, than the louse who probably caused what happened to Adam. I checked the story form two angles, it is true.

One of my favorite Jackson Browne songs, Thank you for posting this. But I have a couple of questions about the lyrics you've posted. When I've listened to the song, I always thought he sang "I feel just like a candle in a way" rather than I feel just like a candle in the way". And I always heard him sing "That I fear before I end, I'll fade away", not "That I fear before I am a fade away." I have no idea what "a candle in the way" or "I am a fade away" mean. Are those the actual lyrics?

They found his truck at the bottom of a lake a few months later. Nothing more. I sometimes think I might have raised him wrong.
