  • A while ago we (or rather, Harry) criticised the Honda VFR800 for being a bit boring. Good, but boring. Now there is the updated VFR800X Crossrunner, their ADV-styled middleweight road bike. Can it shake up our perception of current Hondas?

You guys confuse: new with: innovation ..anyone can put a big engine in to give more power, but on the road you really can't use it. Yes, 100bhp is fairly mild by today's standards, however at least you can exploit it all on the road. Much over 140-150 is completely wasted anyhow. I have an S1000RR that my intention is to take on trackdays, but when I do ride it on the road, even in the rain setting it is too much - I can wring its neck in 1st and 2nd and then risk serious consequences - half / two-thirds of the power with shorter gearing would be more enjoyable for a road bike. It's journos like you that help to influence manufacturers / riders into thinking we need or even want 'innovation' above a fairly basic set of things and then to keep the price point reasonable cut back in the areas that really matter..

I completely agree that there a lot of bikes out there now that have too much power for the road. I would say, however, that 100bhp is not really enough, especially not for something that's likely to have two people on. I reckon 120-130 is the sweet spot for a bike of this size and weight.

Thanks guys, gonna buy a brand new VFR800X next month :). Exactly what I'm looking for, and didn't take your harsh review into account.

FYI, Suichiro Hoda is known for using the part of his previous product final form which means Honda somtimes using the "good enough" parts form their old product for the new one to decrease production bugget

I don't want to be unkind to another Honda - well don't ffs. What a shitty review. The crossrunner is a great bike and it has an adjustable screen now!

They claimed VTEC makes no difference...having ridden one (pre-facelift) myself, I know that certainly is NOT the case.

@@jetstream454 I had a vfr800x on loan for a couple weeks while my Yamaha was fixed. I really enjoyed it. I definitely noticed the VTEC straight away with the akra system too. Needless to say honda know how to put together a machine far better than most riders that think they know what a bike should be.
It's nice to see these guys giving an honest review

Honda debuted a lot of stuff... it's just been weird stuff. The Grom. NC700. FB6. CTX series. In 5 years Honda will make the world's fastest bike and we'll all be talking about how all the other manufacturers are making utilitarian bikes and how Honda missed the boat.

silverfoils machines don't have a fucking soul. Stop it with this bullshit. Either you like it or nah. Have you ridden on a vfr? Then you can't have much of an opinion on how it feels before you ride one

Honda is just so conservative as an entire company....... I've had their bikes and cars in the past, but when I needed a new small displacement commuter bike, I bought a Yamaha R3. The CBR300 was just too boring. There I said it, they're too boring right now, nothing exciting at all!

    • @Surpriseify

Because an R3 is just a bundle of joy and excitement d:
More fun than a CB300, but not really lol.
