Sky News anchor and investigative journalist Peter Stefanovic speaks to defence experts to understand Australia’s defence capabilities as an impending war between China and Taiwan looms.
Mr Stefanovic hit the ground in Taiwan to hear the desperate fears of locals who count the days before an attack on their democratic island.
In his final interview before passing away, the late Senator Jim Molan gave a crucial warning for the government and Australians to begin preparing for war, fearing the nation could be caught in the crossfire of a battle between China and the United States.

1) In 1894, Japan invaded China and Korea, the Qing gov was defeated and signed the [Treaty of Shimonoseki] to cede Taiwan Island to Japan.
2) During the WW2, at the Cairo Conference held in 1943, China asked the transfer of Taiwan's sovereignty back to China after the war. This content was included in the [Cairo Declaration] and later reiterated in the [Potsdam Proclamation] that it should be implemented.
3) On 14 Aug 1945, the Emperor Showa of Japan issued the [End War Edict] , Japan surrendered unconditionally and accepted the [Potsdam Proclamation]. The Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, Marshal MacArthur ordered the Japanese troops in Taiwan to surrender to KMT General Chiang Kai Shek. Taiwan re-entered the territory of the Republic Of China (ROC).
4) Soon after that China civil war broke out between KMT and CCP, the KMT was defeated and fled to Taiwan. However, due to US intervention, the CCP without a strong navy at that time has no ability to unify Taiwan. The CCP then established the People's Republic of China (PRC) on 1949. The civil war continues...
5) In 1971, UN Resolution No. 2758 ruled that the PRC had obtained the representation rights and all legal rights originally owned by the ROC in the UN. That means the PRC is China’s only legal gov under international law, and today the PRC also become China’s only legal gov recognized by 180 countries around the world, including the USA. "The USA recognizes the Government of the PRC as the sole legal Government of China.

Use a computer at work? 80% of all of the chips for electronics come from Taiwan, and something like 95% of all the most advanced chips used in industrial, commercial, health, and military processes. It would be suicidal for US to fight a military war with China today. 1. US strategic oil reserve is at about 371 million barrels, down from a high of about 600 and OPEC is cutting production. 2. China has just imposed a rare earth export ban to US, a key ingredient to military equipments. It would take years for US to ramp up its domestic production to meet its needs. 3. The war in Ukraine has depleted its ammunition stockpile to an already alarming level. Its manufacturing capacity would be unable to keep up with another war. 4. Already some of US European allies are questioning the on-going support of the Ukraine war. It is highly unlikely that they would line up behind another war that is thousands of miles away.

Also... though you may not understand how global reserve currency works, debt is the fundamental core upon which it hinges and works, so long as the currency issuers (the US in this case) has the economy of scale coupled with the military might to enforce its edicts (which we do). The ONLY reason China was lifted out of is previous poverty and relative econmic isolation was because the US paved the way and maintained the integrity thereof of global free trade, enforced by our unprecedented naval might. Without US intervention, China would still be a bucolic and backward state, struggling to keep its population fed, with weak borders and strong predators on every doorstep, as it was when we found it.

But you cannot pump oil reserve into your car. You need refining facilities to convert crude to gasoline. Refining facilities take years to build. In peacetime, US is energy self sufficient. But with the strategic petroleum reserve depleted to a historic low, many experts are predicting that it would be difficult to sustain a major war.
@gj8550 this is why we've trade partner countries that do the various refining. There's been much talk of domestic refining, though it always comes down to the roi factor. And if I'm not mistaken, as a not insignificant bonus, what we get out of oil shale is a fair bit easier to refine than other oil. That gives a lot of leeway and options on the global market, and presumably domestic refineries that are cheaper and quicker to establish. I'm no prophet, but the fundamentals of our future look pretty bright. As in anything else in life, shit can happen though, at any moment.

There are at present practically no spare refining capacity anywhere in the world. The next major world would likely be WWIII with US and G7 on the one side against Russia, China, Iran, N Korea and a few other middle Eastern countries. Guess where the oil refineries are. At the moment, US is busy sucking up to Israel, thus alienating the Middle East while Russia and China are building bridges with the Arab nations.
