How to mount a Pelican case to your roof rack without drilling through the base!

  • Hey guys! Here is the simple and cost effective way to mount a hard case to any roof rack without having to damage the case by drilling through the base of it. Mounting this way lets you quickly attach and remove your cases so you don't have to store them on the truck when empty and gives you a really versatile setup you can adapt to any need.
    The cases i'm using are Pelican 1600 series ( retail is about $200 but i found 4 used for $40 each on craigslist)
    www.bhphotovid...
    Roof rack is homemade and also no drill and quick detachable. I should have a video on how to make it soon!
    Endless ratchet straps i'm using are 7ft long www.amazon.com...
    The hardware you will need is 8x "post and screws" i used 2inch long with 10/24 thread. Local cost was $1.89 each
    A 1/4inch drill bit was the perfect fit.

The Pelican 1605 "Air" provides all the weather-proof features and capacity at 1/2 the weight and 1/2 the cost of their Cargo solution. And your mod makes the tie-down an easy-on-off. Beauty!

    This is a great solution and easier than drilling. I do wonder though if security is an issue. I would be afraid of people more easily taking these off and running off compared to a drilled and bolted one. What are your thoughts on the theft security aspect of this setup? I'm in the process of deciding which method I want to use. Thanks for the video!

    Thanks dude, I appreciate what you do! You inspired me to build my own prinsu-like racks for a fraction of the cost and better suited to my needs than if i had bought one for retail price! I love this whole movement of minimalism and custom home-fabrication. It’s not only cost-savings but the immeasurable value of the satisfaction that follows from building things on your own, and to your own specs, and for your own use, without getting caught up in the marketing hypes and price gauging that pervades our junk economy - where we had all been conditioned to participate in either the mass production of junk or mass consumption of junk! You help us all get outta that mindless cycle, while having fun mastering self-sufficiency and outfitting our changing needs. Keep up the good work and sharing your findings!

  • @dcd6115

    This is a good hack, however, drilling through the case does mean that someone must get into the case to remove it from the roof rack. While you may be destroying a good case, you're also securing it. If you padlock the case, it's at least got one level of security to deter thieves. A case sitting on a roof, attached only with ratchet straps may appear to be low-hanging fruit to many thieves.

  • @obviousgreyman

    You should look into using NRS straps rather than the ratchets much easier and faster to use although probably not quite as secure.

  • @powderrida
    @powderrida 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Something you could do since you already have bolts on the Pelican cases:
    Attach some quick clamp latches to the roof rack and you could take it off and on super fast:
    www.ebay.com/itm/Latch-Action-Toggle-Clamp-Quick-Release-Clamp-370-lbs-170kg-Holding-Capacity/352651594498?hash=item521bac4b02:g:1RAAAOSwwzJeqEfg
    It would clamp as tight as you want it - just like the latch on a pair of vice grips or on an ammo can - and be super solid and faster/easier than feeding the ratchet strap through the racks every time you want it back on

    Also at 6:09, my 2004 Tacoma had the same locking problem, so one day i took the plastic panel apart to diagnose it. It took about 2 hrs just to find out that a small spring about 1cm was missing ( i had to remove the passenger side as well just to see the configuration then figured out what was missing , very tight spaces to work with) I ended replacing with a slight bigger spring than the OEM and it works a lot better now.

    Nobody is going to be able to answer this, but what's a good solution for strapping down a pelican cargo case (BX80) in the back of a Suzuki Grand Vitara 2012 boot (trunk) space nice and tidy in the corner? I've tried using some 1in wide camp fridge tie down straps (basically 1m long tie down straps) but it doesn't work for what I want. Something similar to what's in this video would be great but that wont exactly work because it's on flat surface (carpet).

    I'd argue that the chances of somebody grabbing your pelican boxes and running away with them is greater than water creeping in though holes on the bottom and damaging anything. The holes can be plugged later. If somebody takes your stuff it doesn't matter. Yes you can cable lock them to the rack but that is not nearly as secure as being bolted to the rack from the inside.

    • @schraudog
      @schraudog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      convenience vs security. Agreed. With a sharp knife, the ratchet strap can be cut in two seconds. Bolt cutters can not get at U-bolts if they are tight between the rack and roof of the Taco.
