- This is a review of the 1987 and 1988 AMA 250cc GP seasons. Kocinski was riding for Kenny Roberts and won the championship both years. Kocinski also won the 1989 AMA 250cc National Championship before moving up to the 250cc World Championship in 1990. He won that title in his first try and a few years later, in 1997, Kocinski also won the World Superbike Championship. This impressive resume ranks Kocinski as one of the greatest American racers. Lapped all but the 2nd place finisher at the 4 mile 14 turn Road America. My favorite shirt of my youth was my Kocinski shirt I picked up at that race.
I saw him at Loudon, lap all but One Rider in a 5 lap heat race! He made it look so very easy! Perfect relaxed form. They never should have moved him to 500cc Formula 1.I believe he would have owned the 250 World Class until he retired!

I remember when Kozinski had to right that nasty ass 500cc Cagiva. Everytime he got on that bike he said it was so evil it trid to kill him. Wicked bike!

Got to see John early on at my family's track... Oak Hill Raceway in Henderson, TX on a YZ80 with road racing tires. He was very impressive and embarrassed many superbike riders with it. John used to deny racing at Oak Hill....but I know better...I saw him every time he came there. Many people made their starts at Oak Hill: Freddie, Polen, Hayden's, Edwards, Spies......etc
