  • When Wayne Gardner Was Young He Stole A Bike To Race...he wanted nothing but to go fast, and worked hard all his life to achieve the unachievable. So much so that they even made a film about him. Wayne was always talented, and the talent was reflected in his son Remy Gardner who also joined the motorcycle racing world and won the 2021 Moto2 world championship. But while his son was in the spotlight, Wayne decided to pull back because he knew that there would be a lot of pressure on Remy if he was in the spotlight. Why all the pressure? Because his father is one of the greatest MotoGP riders ever from Australia.
When Wayne Gardner Was Young He Stole A Bike To Race...One time Wayne broke a lock to get someone else’s bike and compete in a race held in the heavily pouring rain, and not only did he speed past the other riders, but he also won the race by 30 seconds. What's more, he had not even qualified for the race; he took to the grid without thinking twice. Peter, who was the owner of the bike, laughed about it, talking about how fast Wayne moved in the rain.
In 1981 he did something unbelievable again. After crashing and injuring his ankle, he wanted nothing more than to race in the next event, so he took off his plaster, raced, and won at Suzuka. He was not about to miss his first Japanese race. Wayne’s life changed completely in 1983. Franco Uncini fell off his bike and was trying to find a gap to get off the track from the oncoming racers, but as Wayne was approaching, he tried desperately to avoid him, but couldn’t.
Wayne hit Franco’s head full on. The impact was so hard it ripped the helmet from Franco’s head and caused Wayne to crash. He and Franco were rushed to the same hospital, Franco in a deep comma in the ICU and Wayne in a wheelchair. He couldn’t bear to take the news that when he hit Franco in the head he’d left him in a comma and it left him in a bad way bringing him to tears. Things got worse when Franco’s wife blamed and yelled at him for hitting Franco, but what could Wayne have possibly done? It all happened so fast, and all he could do was apologize, especially since there was proof that it was not his fault. He kept having nightmares of the incident and even threatened to retire if Franco didn’t pull through, but after Franco got better, he changed his mind, and soon after, he was back to racing.

In that era there were a couple of LEGENDS from down under. Corser Doohan, Bayliss to name a few.
