American John Kocinski became World 250cc Bike GP Champion in 1990, riding for Team Roberts aboard the Yamaha YZR250 and taking 7 wins from a 15 round season.
Following his success in the 250cc class, Kocinski was tipped by many to become a World Champion in the 500cc class and during his first full season in 1991, he famously remarked that if a rider couldn't win the World Championship within two years of starting in the premier class, then they should give up racing. As it turned out his words would come back to haunt him and over the following five seasons he failed to win the 500cc Championship.

One of my most treasured memories is of watching him win at Laguna Seca on the Cagiva.

Money has a lot to do with motorsport, but won't necessarily make you fastest. JK was a great rider.

Kocinski was a very talented rider, but was even a bigger head case, which eventually destroyed his career

Yep 100% in the paddock he was as well known for his oddity as for his riding skill

On bike he was a genius, off bike to say the least, difficult. He once threw a can of coke at a mechanics head because it wasn't cold enough. Problematic

Wealthy parents and the opportunity, it really does count.

To be fair though, he was also a very talented rider regardless of his background.

Sorry mate, but you have a completely wrong impression. John’s father was definitely not wealthy. He lives one mile from me right now. He owned a small Triumph dealership in North Little Rock Arkansas. He drove John to races in a Ford Ranchero, with John sleeping behind the seat. John was born with a speed sensing gyroscope in his brain. I watched him win local dirt races as a young boy, beating riders years older than him, on bikes with twice the displacement.
