Remote Camping on an Ex-Military Route in COLOMBIA

- From the tallest waterfall in Colombia, we area about to enter a unique area of the country, so unique in-fact it’s the largest of it’s kind on earth. The highest waterfall in Colombia, is actually too tall to get into one frame! With the low clouds, even from the drone we’re not able to see the entire cascade.
The Sumapaz national park is the largest Paramo in the world. One that only exists in a few countries. Described as a Neotropical region it is a deeply important ecosystem, providing water to the most densely populated area of the country. Scientists have described these regions as an Evolutionary Hot Spots, meaning they are some of the fastest evolving regions on earth.
This park only became protected in recent decades. During the prior years of Guerrilla warfare, this corridor was used for trafficking weapons, drugs and even people. Much of the park is inaccessible due to antipersonnel mines. It later become occupied by the National military in 2002, and even that has brought controversy. Despite these shadows, this drastic and diverse landscape has us saying yet again, “I can’t believe this is in Colombia”.
To us, this seems wildly foreign and familiar simultaneously. We’ve lost count of how many times we look over at each other and say “I can’t believe this is still Colombia”
It feels as if we’re in the ghost town of a natural area. Between the low clouds and the subdued colours of Sumapaz it would almost be strange to see wild-life here. It feels ghostly.
Normally with our eyes glued to the windshield our minds hope to see {foreign} wildlife, but for some reason this desolate foliage feels more ghostly Our hunt for the Andean bear continues
We have no idea if this route will will exist, but the guesswork of off-grid road-mapping is Colombia has become second nature. It’s going to be one of those we’ll have to drive it to find out situations
Now, our quest to find a safe place to camp has another element. TLC’s advice of don’t go chasing waterfalls would turn out to be very applicable here.
This route has been a textbook adventure. These remote regions teach us a lot, even through the windshield. When we pass through impoverished areas that still have beautiful flowers planted out front, and smiling faces at the door, we feel inspired to continue to find joy with less. The history here is nuanced, but the power of the human spirit to overcome is steadfast. These back road drives may wane on our patience sometimes, but they will always leave us with a story to tell, and that’s our favourite part.

A little bit of everything, rough rocky roads, cows, horses, dog barking at drone, bridges, waterfalls, rural drinkers, and aww a nice hot cup of Colombian coffee!! It’s just a wonderful life ☺️😍😍👋
It is a wonderful life!! Thank you for watching Marcia!
Every time one of your videos ends I want more. Fantastic to say the least and blessings and safety on your trip
It does say in the video “ to find joy with less “. Hard one to apply following these two.
We appreciate that. Thank you so much for being here with us 🙏🏼🤙🏼
It always seems that the people with the least are the most hospitable and willing to share what little they have.
You always seem to have a quotable line in each video and this one was "The road is slow, but it allows for appreciation". That would serve well as a mantra for a well-lived life.
The morning coffee in the school yard was a wonderful show of kindness and as much fun as it would have been to hang out with the rural beer drinkers, I have to believe you made the right choice to keep truckin'.
We believe that as well. A perfect mantra. We are shown unexpected kindness in the strangest places, and that’s what we believe are the gifts of travel. Thank you for watching Phil!
Enjoying every post. Thanks again for sharing. “Exploring new cultures and traditions brings forth new cultures and traditions, brings forth new ideologies, and there is always more to learn. Not everything is as black and white as it may appear.”
🙏🏼 words to live by.
I feel like I'm watching a Harrison Ford movie every time I click on one of your videos. And the research and narration you do is awesome. Great production, your voice and music is fantastic. Thankyou well done
What a rad compliment. Thank you!🙏🏼
I meant "Indiana jones" but I had a "mind blank"😅. I'm 70 and have a landcruiser 100 series that's how I came across your channel. I live in Australia and do trips up and down and across our beautiful country so I really appreciate your adventures. Well done
I love your content! Keep the uploads coming! I cannot stop watching!
We can do that!! Thank you for watching!
Our country Colombia is a Magical place. 🇨🇴🙏🇺🇲♥️✌️
This quality video and commentary deserve WAY more subscriptions and likes. Way to go, you two.
Thank you so much 🙏🏼
I loved this one... Such beauty and such amazing people! The universe just keeps sending them to you❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️
We feel so lucky!!
Great views! Y'all are seriously brave being in that part of my country at night. Quick tip: Whenever you ask locals for directions, keep in mind when they say, "Oh, don't worry, it's just around the corner," it might actually mean a day of rough off-road or a week on horseback. They don't usually measure time like us city folks do. Keep going. You are getting better and better.
Thank you for watching! We definitely know about the 5 days horse trail roads. Our record was 7 hours to go 30km.
Just keeps getting better and better!
❤❤ EPIC as always, it just keeps getting better and better, and you inspire me to buy a drone, greetings from Maple Ridge ❤❤❤❤
Drones see some amazing things 😆 thank you for watching!

Great vid as always. Also what’s with the squeaky steering wheel?.
Also Matthews hair on point 👌🏼😁 those locks are looking real good.
Awesome! Great drone shots as usual, Sue is giving me a hard time as I've only had our drone up twice. Luckily we are in Nicaragua so I have an excuse 🙂🙂 Safe travels!

HT for life man I love it! Great video for sure. Love that Commencal, I had a 2021 and it was a super fun bike and kinda miss it but your spot on about the reach. That was one of the reasons I went for the On One Hello Dave. Plus wanted to go 29’er.
Still waiting for the transition trans am review!!
Wow you are The Adventurers! 🚙
Amazing guys. I am so glad you went to this region no many people go. Thanks for sharing this story with us. Matthew, how many potatoes did you get for loading that truck?
Such a worthy location to visit! So much beauty. Hahah Matthew got only one pepper 😂
Hey Guys I can see that you are heading south, make it to Prado Dam which is pretty impresive, the you cross the border to Huila Province get to know La Tatacoa Dessert, then head to San Agustin town where you can see the Archelogical PArk of San Agustin and the surounding Area, Ill recomend you if you can to go to Los Guacharos National PArj and then to Mocoa and if you can take The Trampolin del Diablo towards La Cocha Lake, which is beautiful, and then go back the same way to cross the Border In La Hormiga Putumayo (is a much easier cross to Ecuador) Good trip
I'm gonna end up watching ALL of your videos at this point! 😂
Haha nice, I have been sharing your videos with friends. Viajeros andinos 😂
Haha that’s rad!! Thank you 🤙🏼
7°C and you’re cold? You sure you’re Canadian? Another great video keep the adventures going.

No te pones nervioso para encontrar gasolina? Like always Beautiful.
Ellos tienen un tanque de gasolina con capacidad de 42 galones
We are very diligent, and have a very big tank.
Wish you would have got a look at that samuari next to the truck you helped load couldn't tell for sure but I think it was o e of the Chevy Baged ones
Great video! I would love to know what that mapping application is. It looks like topographic maps
We are using the paid version of Gaia!
Great content! Mind telling me what song starts playing at 4 minutes and 30 seconds?
Ok, I need a drone!
I want to know more about the Patrol temple 😎
So do we….. 😆
Love watching but baffled on how far you can go on a tank and where you get gas?
Sometimes we feel like we run on solar 😂 we’ve got a 160L/42gallon fuel tank, so it’s a rare occurrence.
😂. Thanks.
Hi Nice video! Colombia is amazing! I have a question: ¿whats the maps app name?
Gaia!
“ you went there, with what??”
I'd say Stacy is a spunky Lady of beauty.
❤ she sure is
Spunky beauty for sure 💃
Aren’t you guys scared to drive into little unknown towns?😮
Not at all. We always do our research before hand, but the unknown rural towns are where we find the most kindness.
It's actually the other way: The BIG cities are way scarier
Hello, I would like to know the measurements of the truck, length, width and height, could you tell me?
They're in Equador
Hi guys...why don't you visit " P A K I S T A N " .... :)
One day!
Awsome vids but losing interest with all the slow music and scenery need more Wheeling and Toyota. Cheers
