One other thing of note is that while the second row seats are more difficult to get out of the way than they are in the Chrysler, I find them to be much more comfortable than the Stow-N-Go seats.
I rented one of these last year going from Seattle to Vancouver, I was very pleased with this van. The V6 motor is buttery smooth. I own a Honda Odyssey and I have to say that I would consider this one if I need to buy another van but my kids are getting older and my days of family road trip vacations are coming to an end. Nothing beats a mini van for hauling people and stuff.
If you are want comfort and safety, no car in the world beats Volvo. You don't realize what seat comfort means until you seat in Volvo. This is coming from me as I have drive everything from Yugo to 480,000 Rolls Royce. For the money, Volvo cars safety and comfort are as good as $200K cars.
Bought a '19 Sienna SE AWD a few months ago and it is perfect for me and my family of 4. Very comfortable, good power, storage, and classic Toyota reliability. AWD was a huge factor, which does very well in winter.
@@LoreDeluge Yes, it's been super reliable and has had no issues after 4 years of ownership. Tons of trips and never left us stranded, excellent in the snow with the right tire. We got 5 kids 1 more i may need an 8 seater, otherwise it's great!
i was never a fan of minivans before but you CANNOT DENY the space and comfort minivans offer. prob the cheapest way to fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back without having to go to a super huge suv. the AWD is a big plus. cant wait till they finally redesign it with even more room. very common work van for small contractors.
About the heavy mid row seat removal ... if you are able to finish your home basement yourself with drywall , so lifting these seats should'nt be a problem .
your wish has been granted. 35 mpg, and the base price of the new hybrid Sienna is not higher than the old one (although if you want the awd minivan you will obviously be paying more than the regular fwd minivan).
I have a 19 sienna AwD. I love the 2gr that it has. I have a downpipe, and full exhaust on it and smoked a GTI with Cobb access port and a stock WRX. All this while my wife and kid were in the car.
Minivan attest: Vacation to Phoenix. 7 adults, each with 22 inch roller bags PLUS 4 sets of golf clubs. Chrysler Pacifica rental swallowed all the luggage, bags and passengers. No sweat. And it was a relaxed, quiet, comfortable cruiser. Recommend no doubt. Much better than even a full-size Suburban.
Wow....excellent review and presentation. The minivan is one of the most practical designs in automotive history and just right for people that need or want them. For many DYI homeowners, small business or handy-persons the minivan is the best truck they have ever owned. An SUV is big, but nowhere as space efficient as a minivan, and while they may carry up to eight people, the minivan is far more comfortable (& less claustrophobic) for 8. For anyone that wants or needs a minivan and does not need all the flash and bells and whistles, the Grand Caravan is a decent choice and much more affordable or find a gently used one to save even more. The 6-speed transmission is just fine. Each brand has its pros and cons, so buyers should definitely test drive each for an extended time. There are people with 300,000+ miles on Dodge Caravans/Chrysler T&C with no serious problems, and I have known folks with a Sienna with 60,000 miles that had all sorts of expensive repairs. I imagine the next version of the Sienna will be quite amazing, but also very expensive. Let's hope it is not ugly.........😮
Love the all-wheel drive capability but it comes with those weird run-flat tires which can't be swapped out from the rims. So while it's spacious and has four-wheel drive it really can never be used off road unless you do some serious modifications. Otherwise I would own one of those instead of a big fat SUV.
Someone I know bought a Pacifica in 2017. Been in the shop more than at home. They're going to eat the cost and get a Honda or Toyota. I suffered the same Chrysler blues, not long ago. Now I'm in a Honda and couldn't be happier.
Brady Bisgard it really depends on what you do with it. The second row seats are too difficult to manage compared to the Chrysler duo. It also feels bulkier than any other minivan.
As a recent retiree who never considered a minivan I’m buying a sienna with 110,000 miles which I expect to last rest of my life. My truck is no longer relevant as I don’t buy anything I can’t handle by myself and is too high to comfortably get in/out of. My Civic gas mileage served me well commuting daily but no longer an issue. I plan to use when I camp; no more crawling into a tent for me. I travel across country couple times a year and look forward to driving as opposed to flying with only a two week span.
I own a 2017 honda odyssey and I had to run with a toyota Sienna 2018 for 2 month and well, both are reliable car. The main 2 differences I,d say are the seats/suspensions and the motor, transmussin coupling. honda seats are firm and same for the suspension. It feel a little more sporty. I personaly don't anjoy the toyota seats, they are too soft for my taste but the suspension is nicely balanced I,d say. Not to soft but not so stiff so road bump are almost not a concern on the sienna. But I just hated how the gas pedal works on the sienna. It is not a linear as the Honda ones. Despite beeing faster on the 0 to 60mph when you drive it its just feel slower. You are constantly reminded that you are driving a minivan in the sienna while the odyssey really feel like it is ready to accelerate at anytime. Get the Sienna if you prefer the boat like ride that is confortable and the odyssey if you want some good driving feeling I'd say.
Hi Alex on Autos justo Wang to say guay tve backups lights are LEDFREE ANF YOU NEED TO INSTALL THEM BECAUSE THERF ARE 9 LED'S AND THE GOG LIGHTS ARE UN_LED'S.
I think the Kia Sedona is right in the middle between the Sienna and the Odyssey when it comes to ride and handling.. the Sedona feels like an Elantra out on the road learning it throu some corners than for what it's physical size would imply
And remember that fca reliability isn’t the best. I don’t really believe that the Pacifica hybrid’s savings will compensate for any issues needed to be fixed at the dealer. And I agree that the sienna is relevant even if it’s dated. Remember it has class leading cargo space, AWD, safety, etc. plus efficiency is very similar to the other minivans
A couple of things...My understanding is if you buy an AWD Sienna mini van you not only lose the spare tire but it comes with run flat tires which many people don't like. Secondly, it is also my understanding that if you buy a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid you lose the ability to fold the 2nd row seats into the floor.
I inherited my parents 11 AWD when they wanted to get a newer 19. I have mixed feelings about the packaging compromise but I understand it. maybe someday they'll use electric motors in the rears instead of running the drive through the area. I bought a cheap (compact) spare and I'm considering carrying it and getting non run-flats when tire change is due soon
Alex, as a lifelong auto enthusiast, I've come to consider you a thorough, fair, objective & informative journalist. Here, cross comparing 3-row SUVs with minivans, I think you've muddied the waters (and unfairly set the Sienna up for failure in the process).
I've test driven them all and my family decided on the 2018 Odyssey Elite. Best bang for your buck especially when You look at how well they maintain their value.
The title answers it's own question. It's relevant because it's so reliable. There aren't that many players in the segment and none come close to it's reliability.
Very good video to learn about these Vans thanks for uploading. I just saw a Consumer Reports article where it says Toyota sienna is recommended over Honda Odyssey. 😊
I have a 2011 Siana SE I tow my motorcycle trailer with it. Over the eight years that I have owned it has been extremely reliable basic maintenance and two minor recalls involving the sunroof button and power door mechanism.
Another great review - everyone support Alex. Thanks for the great comparison to the Pacifica Hybrid. I own one and two Siennas, and am glad I bought the PacHy. 30,000 miles and spent only $1500 in gas. Toyota is letting the Sienna slide, I wouldn't be surprised if they let it die as sales are sliding for the model and sales for minivans are sliding overall to the trendy and less useful crossovers.
did a 3 day road trip, we needed all 3 rows and trunk space; none of the 3 row SUVs could cut it, at all, laughablly so.. the Chrysler Minivan though, ate it up and then some
Carpediem06 minivans cannot be beat... EXCEPT for two Fords. The Flex and the Explorer have excellent three row seating and GIANT trunk spaces with the third row up.
@@afcgeo882 we checked out the Durango, Highlander, and Journey in order, even the Durango, couldn't fit all our gear (believe me, riding a minivan was not on our to do list), but it was the only thing that could do it (they didn't have an Explorer or Flex for us that I remember)..
Anthony Molina the Expedition is massive, but has little trunk space behind the third row. You’d need an Expedition XL to get that. The Explorer actually has more trunk space with the third row up.
The very best and complete comparisons of these vans and crossovers. Thanks Alex, for an unbiased and detailed report that points out all the pros and cons of what a consumer would be looking for. Excellently done and nothing left out that we need to know. Keep it coming!
how can you buy an L after sitting in an XLE. that LE/L trim makes me vomit in my mouth a bit. I'd take a 2019 XLE with 20k miles for the same over a brand new L anyday.
I looked at the Chrysler Pacifica but guess what...the recalls are piling up and owner are trading them in after a year of ownership because of reliabiilty issues. That leaves the Kia Sedona as the best combo of price and cost of ownership. Too bad Chrysler can't figure out how to build a reliable vehicle.
I looked at pretty much every offering in the car market and A mini van was the obvious choice. I bought an Odyssey Elite as in my opinion it the most stylish, comfortable, feature packed van available today. I had to get over my stigma that we NEEDED AWD. The truth is even here in Montana where we get brutal winters, with the advanced traction system and winter tires it gets around better than our 4wd Tahoe. And WAY more usable room. The awd system would just take up precious cargo space and raise the load floor which is why Honda has never implemented it.
This van is much older than the last 2011 redesign. The guts of this van outside of the powertrain are still the K-body, which is what debuted in 2004. Only things that changed were the engine and transmission, but the suspension, frame, and design are basically 16 years old. These vans were dead reliable back in 2004, as they go over 300K normally today, and there is no reason that a 2019 can't do the same thing. Amazing how Toyota can stretch their engineering and design dollars so damn far. It is a basically a 2003 model with just powertrain and cosmetic updates, and it is still the best minivan on the market bar none in my view. The 2021 model is going to kick ass Im sure
I see more Sienna minivans on the road than any other brand. The closest competitor, Honda Odyssey, looks like a space ship/hearse. It’s ugly. On a daily basis I see many older Siennas from the 1990s on the road, can’t say for Honda. If you want your moneys worth, buy a Toyota.
Recently bought a 2019 Sienna SE with Costco pricing. I passed on the Pacifica because of the awful reliability (look at the forums) and the Odyssey because of them downgrading the A/C system and also some reliability issues. The Sienna is older yes but they have done a decent job keeping pace with the safety tech on it and it should prove more trouble free that it's competitors.
My wife and I love our Sienna. Holds our 4 kids well. Don’t get an AWD version. They weigh more, cost more, and are costly when it breaks. Just get good snow tires if you want traction.
Never going to happen. No market for it. Even regular minivans’ sales have been in the gutter. That’s why Dodge and Toyota haven’t been updated. No financial sense to invest into something that won’t recoup the investment in 5 years.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide there are online photos of an existing minivan in Japan (Toyota Alphard & Vellfire) that may become the Lexus. Very boxy looking vehicles but practical and roomy, with tons of luxury features.
@@oldschool1928 some rumor says there will be a Lexus version of Alphard for the few selected markets, so I guess that means Japan, China and a few Asian countries exclusive.
Not that I’m a huge minivan lover nor will I own one any time, the Honda Odyssey is so much better. The looks, the quality, layout, materials, and features. It does have AWD. Yay I guess.
In the past 10 years, I have not seen a family with a minivan, but like all the contractors and electricians I know that aren't in true work vans or heavy duty trucks are in old minivans. These things I think were designed to be the original family friendly workhorse, before the much more profitable luxury crew cab pickup.
Thanks for great review, as always! The natural progression from this video seems to be review of a Ford Transit Connect Wagon, which I don't find in your videos library... Any plans to do that?
I agree that it's hard to beat the space efficiency of minivan. I have traveled to many places with my 2010 Honda Odyssey with 7 people and luggages for thousand of miles. For similar internal space in a cross over or SUV, it would have to be much bigger externally.
Reliability is number one for me, which would be my main reason for buying this.... However. Can't wait to see the complete redo of this van would be nice! 👌
You think the Grand Caravan has a less comfortable second row than the Pacifica??? You must never have sat in them. Unfortunately, it’s the other way around. The Pacifica has a slightly more comfortable third row, but also a smaller trunk area. This is why the Grand Caravan still sells so well. This, and its reliability, which is finally excellent, after so many years of gradual improvements.
Please! Someone do reviews for elderly drivers who need space for wheelchair. And low enough floor so I can load it. But high enough seats that I can just stand up....not have to climb up, out of car. Or so high i can not get into. Lots of other folks will soon be reaching this stage of life.
My grandpa was able to climb in and out our Odyssey much easier than the Sienna we rented. The Sienna's 2nd row seat has a weird cushion that tilts upwards, the sienna is also higher off the ground
I had a Ford Winstar 3.6L....limited...plenty of room, horse power...I remember stopping at a rest stop with my family and a family with a Cherokee Jeep noticed how much room we enjoyed compared to their SUV...
Had the Pacifica hybrid for a weekend. It’s awesome but no Stow n Go. Gas mileage was about the same honestly, probably 23 mpg. I’d get the regular one in “S” trim.
Toyota's adaptive cruise control is awful. You cannot shut it off and run regular cruise control. If a car merges in front of you, it instantly drops back and you are always overriding it. If you want to pass, you have to pull to overtake about 20 car lengths back so you block traffic. I also tried it in slushy weather which blocked the sensor so zero cruise control for 6 hours.
It is very unlikely that you would buy 4x8 sheets on a whim. I would take Toyota's seats over the thin stow solution. You could lay a piece of plywood over the rails to prevent them from damaging fragile sheets. Great review as usual!
Odyssey is modern looking but not as sleek (relatively speaking) vs other minivans Sienna is very dated in looks. Sedona needs to move the sliding door slot and gear selector appropriately like other minivans have. Pacifica is perfect but Chrysler lacks reliability and the resale value. All 4 have one issue or the other. There isn't enough competition in minivan world.
Well FCA, for the money you ask for Pacifica, people vote to drive Siennas and Odysseys, not an updated version of Grand Caravan. Price it wisely and people will start switching over to Pacifica.
I'm a big fan of minivans, and my current favorite is the Odyssey. However, if Toyota were to release a Sienna Hybrid, I'm quite confident that would take my top spot. As much as I want to like the Pacifica PHEV, I simply do not trust Chrysler -- too many awful experiences with breaking down.
Minivans are very practical and useful for carrying people and cargo, but I hardly ever see any new/newer minivans in our area [southern CA, suburban area].

One other thing of note is that while the second row seats are more difficult to get out of the way than they are in the Chrysler, I find them to be much more comfortable than the Stow-N-Go seats.
SuperIthar you had a basic trim. You need to get the Limited.
Nothing beats a mini van for hauling people and stuff.
no SUV can compare to a van in people moving and comfort
I've compared the 3rd row legroom of large SUVs and you're right. The minivan always wins.
@@meenam300zx yeah, Volvo so safe, I'd stand in front of it and test it's safety systems on me

Bought a '19 Sienna SE AWD a few months ago and it is perfect for me and my family of 4. Very comfortable, good power, storage, and classic Toyota reliability. AWD was a huge factor, which does very well in winter.
Still?
Car & Driver just published some photos of the next Sienna.
About the heavy mid row seat removal ... if you are able to finish your home basement yourself with drywall , so lifting these seats should'nt be a problem .
I had a 2004 sienna awd with 220,000 drove all over usa now I have a xle awd sienna 2013 and love it this vans are amazing
I want a Hybrid AWD. Electric Ac and no idling. Ultimate sleep overnight with AC van.
It may already be developed but being held back until they can ask $70,000.
your wish has been granted.
I suggest next time you drag, that you not have kids in the car.. yr wife well whatever,😁👍
😮 what for real? 😅
After being burned on the Honda Odyssey VCM system....I would probably go for the Sienna as our next minivan.
Unless you’re towing something this with AWD is the best 3 row thing on the market.
Brady Bisgard it really depends on what you do with it. The second row seats are too difficult to manage compared to the Chrysler duo. It also feels bulkier than any other minivan.
Russell 747 new ones aren’t, but Chrysler did make AWD ones recently.
Russell 747 Toyota absolutely does make this Sienna with All-Wheel-Drive.
sienna is very best man ever , how ever sienna needs for sure the built-in vacoom cleaner and interior cabin watch cameras.
Wow. This guy really loves the Pacifica, doesn't he?
As a recent retiree who never considered a minivan I’m buying a sienna with 110,000 miles which I expect to last rest of my life. My truck is no longer relevant as I don’t buy anything I can’t handle by myself and is too high to comfortably get in/out of. My Civic gas mileage served me well commuting daily but no longer an issue. I plan to use when I camp; no more crawling into a tent for me. I travel across country couple times a year and look forward to driving as opposed to flying with only a two week span.
Minivan shines in many ways. Actual usable 3rd row, awd, and a v6 (mostly).
If you have kids and people to transport, nothing beats a minivan. Plus it's a fantastic car for home Depot runs.
When is the Sienna not relevant? It’s the best minivan to get.
Consumer Reports is giving the new Honda Odyssey bad ratings, you may be right.
True.
I love my Sienna so much.
Sienna Van's will always be made.
Wow. Great review. I’ve watched a couple other Alex on Autos reviews and they were also fully engaging no waisted time and complete.
did a 3 day road trip, we needed all 3 rows and trunk space; none of the 3 row SUVs could cut it, at all, laughablly so.. the Chrysler Minivan though, ate it up and then some
Carpediem06 minivans cannot be beat...
Carpediem06 yeah, none of the above would fit as much. You know there are brands outside the FCA right?
George L expedition is massive
Anthony Molina the Expedition is massive, but has little trunk space behind the third row. You’d need an Expedition XL to get that. The Explorer actually has more trunk space with the third row up.
The very best and complete comparisons of these vans and crossovers. Thanks Alex, for an unbiased and detailed report that points out all the pros and cons of what a consumer would be looking for. Excellently done and nothing left out that we need to know. Keep it coming!
Just bought 10/11/20 left over L model for $26,500! Unbelievable! I love it!
how can you buy an L after sitting in an XLE. that LE/L trim makes me vomit in my mouth a bit. I'd take a 2019 XLE with 20k miles for the same over a brand new L anyday.
Gas price is high at the moment, don’t know why Toyota still has not brought the Hybrid/plugin hybrid version to America. Poor North America market.
We are closing in on fifty years since the last reliable Chryslers left the assembly plants. I am talking about the Valiant and Dart.
Yes the odyssey is creepy looking
Dodge caravan 2018 sales 151,000. Honda. 107,000. Toyota. 87,000
May I ask how much you paid with Costco pricing. ?? Also which model?
Very appreciative of detailed review & objectivity. Also, Pacifica hybrid loses 2nd row stow & go seats due to battery placement; worth noting.
As an owner of an Odyssey, you are spot on in all your comments. Excellent job!

Great review. It would be interesting to know the max cargo capacity details for all the minivans, height from the ground for example is hard to find.
My wife and I love our Sienna. Holds our 4 kids well.
Don’t get an AWD version. They weigh more, cost more, and are costly when it breaks. Just get good snow tires if you want traction.
I like the sienna se.

One of the most reliable vans out there... not looking forward to a significant update... prefer reliability than bells and whistles...

Two cars I have driven that gas gone past 300k miles with no major repairs are Toyota prius and a sienna
No battery issue with the Prius?
can't wait until the Lexus minivan come to USA
I hope they do, but all the folks I've spoken with there are saying not to expect it "any time soon" :-\
Toyota reliability with a good naturally aspirated V6 (port/direct injection) and not some dinky 4 banger turbo, and no CVT.
In the past 10 years, I have not seen a family with a minivan, but like all the contractors and electricians I know that aren't in true work vans or heavy duty trucks are in old minivans. These things I think were designed to be the original family friendly workhorse, before the much more profitable luxury crew cab pickup.
Wow, excellent review packed full of information!
Thanks for great review, as always! The natural progression from this video seems to be review of a Ford Transit Connect Wagon, which I don't find in your videos library... Any plans to do that?
Our dealership has several of these that are shuttle vans, they have nearly 300k on them and they run great.
Excellente Alec... I have a 2005 Sienna so I would probably opt for the Sienna do to dependability...
Sienna is just perfected and refined.. it would need some kind of major differentiation for its new generation and not just packing on tech
Thanks for the great video. My wife and I are in the market for a Sienna.
When you do the palisade review can you do the same baby seat comparison? Center walk through/trying to get out from the back or middle.
I agree that it's hard to beat the space efficiency of minivan. I have traveled to many places with my 2010 Honda Odyssey with 7 people and luggages for thousand of miles. For similar internal space in a cross over or SUV, it would have to be much bigger externally.
Honda Odyssey may have a better infotainment system with more high tech features, but the minivan is less reliable then Toyota's
toyota needs to bring an electric minivan to the market
They just did
@@skepticalmechanic toyota does not have any pure ev cars, forget about pure ev minivan
I wish towing was included in this review. I think it effects the results if the top pick is a hybrid.
Reliability is number one for me, which would be my main reason for buying this.... However. Can't wait to see the complete redo of this van would be nice! 👌
Sienna is the best, by far for many reasons
Sienna
15:09 Pacifica and Odyssey share the same 9-speed transmission. Well that solves it. Sienna is the only van worth buying now.
The hybrid Pacifica is really the one to get bar none. Otherwise yah the Toyota is a sure bet, esp if you need AWD.
I missed my old 08 Sienna....
Odyssey is modern looking but not as sleek (relatively speaking) vs other minivans
Sienna is very dated in looks.
Sedona needs to move the sliding door slot and gear selector appropriately like other minivans have.
Pacifica is perfect but Chrysler lacks reliability and the resale value.
All 4 have one issue or the other. There isn't enough competition in minivan world.
Lmao you "forgot" about the Nissan Quest
@@dtay8913 Nissan discontinued the Quest.
What about the wonderful Mercedes Metris?
Even if the quest was still a thing. I wouldn't count It. That thing is an embarrassment
Reliable is always relevant
Well FCA, for the money you ask for Pacifica, people vote to drive Siennas and Odysseys, not an updated version of Grand Caravan. Price it wisely and people will start switching over to Pacifica.
I'm a big fan of minivans, and my current favorite is the Odyssey. However, if Toyota were to release a Sienna Hybrid, I'm quite confident that would take my top spot. As much as I want to like the Pacifica PHEV, I simply do not trust Chrysler -- too many awful experiences with breaking down.
Pikminiman Of course! Toyota never break down!
I LOVE THIS MINIVAN
Minivans are very practical and useful for carrying people and cargo, but I hardly ever see any new/newer minivans in our area [southern CA, suburban area].
People wait a couple years to buy an old minivan, you won’t feel to bad when scratches on the door
I love my 2016 Kia Sedona SX. Lots of tech and has been very reliable
Build quality pretty good on that? How's the interior holding up? Looking at a 2016 or newer Sedona EX or SX myself for a family hauler.
I have no kids. Just a wife. I own 2 siennas. Wife has a crossover suv.
Im a DJ. Best vehicles i ever owned.
Fleet sales also are a reason for the Grand Caravan’s high sales. The USG and rental companies buy a large number
I wish toyota would make an entertainment system standard on all siennas .
