    Popular opinion here, GW boxes should come with all the models thay you can take in an unit, having to buy multiple boxes to have a full unit is dumb.

    • @Morrodin182
      @Morrodin182 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry that I ask but which recent boxes include incomplete units? O.O' ... I mean, sure I know 1 AoS box (a Stormcast one) which has an incomplete unit but I don't know any other products GW sells for which the units are incomplete. Unless you mean that currently although you are provided with a full unit, you lack the actual weapon options to kit out every model in the unit the way you want. If you mean that, YES ... 1000 times yes. If you mean actual incomplete units, as said I personally only know of that one Stormcast box which provides 3 miniatures for a unit with 5 models in it to be complete.

      I haven't bought Orks for a long time, and can't quote their codex, but I have heard people use them as an example.
      Half the Boyz come with one weapon choice, half with another, with no duplication.
      If the whole unit have to be armed the same, that means buying two boxes, to field one box worth of minis.
      Complex monopose sculpts are also unhelpful. Older models would have weapons and gear separate, sometimes on separate sprues, and GW allowed purchases of those specific sprues.
      Now, swapping a weapon is difficult, as that weapon comes as a piece with half a chestplate and waist.

      A DW veteran unit of 10 guys would then need 10 marines, 5 bikes, 5 assault marines and 5 terminators. Means each box per squad will be £130 range if that was the case.

      Round about the time an excellent book, 1421, about the neglected Chinese voyages of discovery was published, white Dwarf did an article focused on the revamped lizardmen/Slann. Written up as the diary of a Cathay courtier accompanying an expedition to the New World which fell foul of the indigenous Slann. And yes it did a good job on bugging up the Slann but all the time I was wondering, ok, is GW going to jump on the bandwagon and bring out armies of Cathay for Warhammer, and/or Warhammer Ancient Battles? And...zilch.

      That's not a fair example.
      'Veterans' are effectively a skill upgrade, to multiple types of marine unit.
      I wouldn't expect to see bikes, in a box of terminators.
      But if I bought a box of bikers, I expect to see the options, to equip a veteran sergeant, icon bearer, vox operator, as a unit of typical marine bikers, with the additional gear that can turn them all into veteran bikers, that are listed in their current and previous codex.
      I shouldn't have to buy a box of 'veteran bikers', to get a power weapon, or combi-bolter.
      Similarly, any SM hero on bike should come with the options to build them as a chaplain, apothecary.
      It reduces purchaser paralysis, and frees up space on the shelves.

Armour values were higher and there were different hit locations and facings, as well: a land raider had a hull AV of 22 for front, 20 for side/rear. The other locations were las cannon, and track. Las cannon arm pen was 3d6+9.
      Also, figure costs were higher. A squad of 3-9 chaos marines, armed with only bolt pistol and frag, with power armour, were 25 points, bolt rifles were 3pts each, etc for other wpns depending on the squad you were making. And then you had to buy the aspiring chaos champion (sgt) and all of his equipment...
      Some other differences (or not, I've not played 9th): You could only do one of the following for movement: Charge, move (and shoot where appropriate), or run. Much more realistic. Targeting was more real-world, too. Facings mattered. A squad could target multiple things.
      Also, before the game, you each drew a mission card with primary and secondary objectives, but didn't show your opponent. I love this as, as often happens in real life, you don't know what your opponent is trying to do, so you have to deal with them, and still worry about your own orders. The bit about influencers being dependent upon free stuff, early, from GW is kind of true in the larger media space.
    In the old days, companies hated the News because they would often publicize all the deeply scummy things those companies were doing. But then they invented a thing called a "Press Release", which allowed companies to tailor the news to their benefit. Journalists are lazy (if we're being uncharitable), and overworked and underfunded (if we are being charitable). It's just easier and less work to print the press releases the companies hand to you.
    Until at this point, news media is functionally just the PR arm of Capital. "Access Journalism" is the name of the game.
    In another example, video games journalism is similarly just an extension of the video game industry. If your review of the latest game isn't sufficiently glowing, or at least sufficiently uncritical, you can say bye to your access in the future. No access, no news. In a cutthroat competitive media environment like now, the goodwill of a company has outsized influence over one's survival.

    IMO Warcry and Kill Team 2.0 (the current version) do show that GW's present designers can put together really great and relatively streamlined games when they're allowed to start from scratch. Also, outside of GW, Kings of War demonstrates that old Warhammer fantasy had a great foundation that accumulated too much cruft and "but also" aspects - KoW keeps it simple and is a completely fantastic game.
    I kind of suspect there's a holistic problem for GW with 40k and AoS, in that they want to profiteer off releasing new editions and army codexes very often. This creates a disincentive to sit down, start from scratch, and build a single game system that lasts and doesn't have to be tinkered with and FAQed every 90 days. What would be the point when you know you're just going to make a new edition in 20 months in order to sell everybody a replacement set of books?

    • @TwinStripe
      @TwinStripe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd disagree with the Warcry and Kill Team perspectives - for me, Kill Team went too far in the 'simplification' process, and by essentially fixing it to pre-built squads just caters for the provision of a 'meta' and endless balance updates. Also, switching the measurement system to use symbols was just dumb - if they've have wanted to use a 'measuring device' system, then just follow what SW:Legion or OnePageRules do, because both of those systems work really well..
      WarCry used to be a really great game - simple, straightforward rules, simple listbuilding (which still provides tonnes of room for variation) and no absolute 'meta' (the Adepticon winning warbands couldn't be any different from one another if they tried). In February the game was in the best shape I've ever seen a GW game, with lots of ways to play and entry points into the hobby all the way from under £50 all the way up to £150.
      Then they invalidated the ToC '21 book within two months of releasing it by withdrawing virtually all of the Underworlds warbands from sale and started selling 'starter' warband boxes for £60 featuring unoptimized warbands. Right now, I'm looking at the July 10th announcements with dread, as I've a horrible feeling that WarCry 2.0 is on the horizon, featuring pre-built squads (invalidating a lot of current lists) and a £200 'starter' set...

    the cost of paying GW to play is high, but now you can buy a resin 3d printer for the same cost as a box set of warhammer 40k and then 3d print an entire army mostly for free (the better 3d models cost a little bit and people should tip the artist if it's free just cuz it's nice imo, but it's still pennies compared to GW prices) the cost may be more by a little bit upfront but then when you take into account you can 3d print unlimited numbers of models for much much cheaper, 1liter of resin is like 25$, each regular mini is less then a dollar, and then you can also print minis that are unique, and then there is 3d printing all the terrain, but the issue with 3d printing is GW wont let you play at their stores (which is fine , who goes to a GW store anyways) and everyone who is a fan boy will judge you :(

    Cathay was teased in the very forst mentions of the old world with kislev, and gw and CA stated they worked together on the design of both together. Unpopular opinion: the gamers need to spend time looking at games other then those produced by GW. GW games (not the fluff/minis) are really poorly designed and waaay behind the times. It's like watching people play Pacman yelling about how it's the BEST GAME EVA! while I'm over here playing something made in 2022 and wondering why those people are trying so hard not to live their decade.
    Want some very cheap, mini agnostic suggestions? The Weald, Sludge, Nightwatch, Insurgent earth, Oathmark, Silver bayonet, Konflict 47, Warlords of Erewhon, Fantastic Battles, Battlespace, Song of blades and Heroes.
    If you want to see rules writing at bleeding edge check out anything written by Richard Clark and Sam Mustafa. Yes, they do write historical rule sets but some how manage to be more intuitive, dynamic and innovative then most sci-fi/fantasy games.

    Warhammer is expensive. I like the Middle-Earth sbg and I find that as a beginner, battle companies is the best way to play. You don’t need a lot of miniatures depending on the faction you choose. For instance my first faction I’ve chosen is The Moria Goblins. All I need for the faction is one box of the normal goblins to start. Now as I advance I’ll need prowlers and black shield, but if you play with a group of people who aren’t super sticklers you can always just say “hey this guy her is a prowler and these two are black shield”. Keep it light, keep it fun, and just have a good time.

    As someone whose been very competitive in other genres, made enough money from one of those genres to not go hungry and been surrounded by some of the greatest examples of competitive communities. Wargaming is not competitive, It's only considered so by the absolute mad (and respectable) effort some people in a very specific part of wargamings community (competitive community) do to make it so and it's resulted in a very average community who are more built around casuals pretending to be competitive than actual competitive players.
    Like in the other genres I've seen the skill level, mentality and capability of said wargaming competitive scene pretty much aligns with their casuals.
    I'm not even going to get started on the horror show from an outside point of view that I had when I first started, which was the toxic TO's, the rampant cheating etc
    The competitive mentality of the average competitive wargame player is too childish to be taken seriously, and their idea of competitive elevation is to look up a list or what another person finds strong, you take away the internet / word of mouth from the extreme high majority of these people and they will be lost at sea.
    What annoys me is wargaming has such a magical experience that can't be capture anywhere other than dnd and yet only like 5 to 10% it's potential is seen/met and that's: Narrative play.
    If even half the effort that the competitive wargaming community puts into trying to make it competitive was put into narrative, magical things would happen.
    I'd rather see people show off their insane table terrain and talk about their incredible journey through some crusade or whatever narrative campaign then hear them bitch about how they have to shelve their OP army they bought last year because it's been nerfed and they are interested in a new army that seems fun, happens to be really strong, you know the one by the same developer for the same game that happened to coincidentally be released around the same time.

    • @Remixersoloman
      @Remixersoloman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is pervasive in video and card games, too. Mtg I'll pick a lot of people running "competitive" decks apart with my goofy homebrew shit because they play a copied deck the say someone told them to and flounder when they have to actually interact with the opponent instead of their cheese combo because they didn't get a perfect starting hand.

    • @nameisbad
      @nameisbad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, most likely because the person pick the deck because it's strong in a meta, but they don't really know why or haven't got the capability to make full use of it. Also out of meta opponents will potentially have anti meta decks or decks that aren't taken into consideration by the net deck creator.
      Real competitive players need the ability to make the deck without looking it up, understanding why it is and what it does and how to change it on the fly via sideboard or when the meta shifts.
      In wargaming I can't tell you the amount of "serious competitive player" that complain because they can't remember stratagems or don't want to put in the time to research other factions etc
      40k competitive play is an illusion, ten to twenty people in a tournament doesn't make a good enough environment, the games are too long for serious growth.
      You'll never see sponsorships become standard in it, even tho this is an environment full of people that are kind of easy to make spend money, wargamers have spent so much and keep spending so much it's like...
      Don't get me started on 40k pay to win. New box that has a new unreleased unit that give you a massive advantage and you want to bring four of them? 400£ right there, indomitus for example with those heavy support melta dudes. It's pathetic how anti competitive 40k is.

    There's an even simpler way to keep GW from knowing that you are googling Star Wars Legions. Don't do it on your work computer. How else would a GW manager even know what he is searching for on Google? I seriously doubt that GW is hacking his computer to track his searches. The only plausible way they could know what he is searching for is that he is doing it on their computers. GW saying that you can't spend your time researching a competing product while you are at work on their time and using their computer isn't even a little unreasonable.

The guards wear armour made from its Chitin and use spears of Hair fibres from its back.
