    Source for the ship math:
    If we take a very conservative estimate here and say that the population density of Terra is the same as the most densely populated city on Earth at the minute (Male in the Maldives) and that it covers all of Earth (remember we used up the oceans) then the population of Terra is around 16 trillion. That’s 12 zeroes after the 16 by the way. Now if we do some back of the envelope calculations here, and say that each person needs about 2 litres of water and 300 grams of food per day (they probably need more) then Terra needs 36.8trillion kilos of food and water on a daily basis or 18billion four hundred million tons. Assuming this is all the density of water (a kilo per cubic metre), and an Imperial Transport ship is 8km long and 1 wide and tall so a bit bigger than Gibraltar and it’s all storage. Terra needs at least 4600 ships of this size every single day just to stay fed. Add on top of this, Industrial ships, tribute ships, and ships selling pirated playstation games and you could be looking at 10 thousand ships unloading 18 billion tons each. That's a whole lot of cheetos.

      There's some "orphaned" stealers that don't have a hive fleet to call anymore. They just keep going as "programmed" but the 'nids never show up. One particular type, the Ymgarl strain, actively tries to get reabsorbed by the hive fleets, with their cult activities usually culminating in seizing ships and flying off to the nearest invasion tendril.
      ...only to be disappointed because _Tyranids refuse to eat Ymgarl genestealers._ There's something about their genes that the hive fleets want absolutely _nothing_ to do with. So after a tyranid invasion devours all life on a world with Ymgarl stealers on it, the only thing left will be...the ever more depressed Ymgarl genestealers.

    It's kind of like GW never thought through the lore implication of the Custodes fighting the GC on Terra. When I first saw the previews of the Shadow Throne box I figured "well it's certainly not Terra, it's probably just some random world". Once the cult is established on Terra that's it - it will never be truly eradicated.

    • @fadelsukoco3092
      @fadelsukoco3092 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Personally I thought that Genestealer cults being on Terra was established as being a thing long before the box set released, and the reason that they can go relatively unnoticed no matter how powerful they become is due to literal quadrillions of people living on Terra, and all of the different gangs and houses and organizations operating there, that the Genestealers would just be an insignificant other player.

    • @theandf

      @@fadelsukoco3092 why wouldn't the GSC just infiltrate all other factions? All it takes is a visit from a purestrain Genestealer. My first thought when I saw the title was yeah. People are assuming that the battle between them is on a battlefield, that they're lined up and it's just a straight up fight. The first person to lose all their dudes loses. But that's not how Wars are often fought, in practice, the gene stealer cults trying to corrupt the whole planet, and in this scenario, the custodes are 10 guys trying to stop them from doing that. It doesn't matter how indestructible those 10 guys are. They can't be everywhere at once. Gene stealer cultist could be anywhere, you don't even know where they are. They might not even bother confronting the custodes directly.

In it he claimed that if the war had gone on for three more years. It would have been at least two generations before they could have won. They were running short of Warm Bodies. Now we fast-forward 40000 years to a planet that was almost destroyed 10,000 years ago because of the Horus heresy. That laid waste to huge areas of the planet. The rebuilding was in the hands of a defensive genius. If you believe that he would not have rigged whole sections of the city oh, sorry of the planet to fall down go boom. Then I believe you don't understand Dorn. There would never be a case when it would simply be the custodis versus any attack. They would simply be at the Forefront of the retribution. The citizenry would only hear about the vile traitors who were attempting to bring down the empire and kill the emperor. The custodis are not complete freaking idiots. They would use every asset they could get their hands on. So the scenario is flawed from the get-go.

      I also think you missed the infiltration bit of the message here and that the Genestealer Cult is playing for time. They are going to reconnoitre Terra fully. Anyone of any position of information is going to meet the Patriarch. If the planet is booby trapped who is to say this will even work anymore when the balloon goes up. All the useful maintenance people on the planet are going to meet the Patriarch.
      You can argue the Vietnam War was lost in America and not Vietnam. Look at the division in the US during and after the Vietnam War and multiply this - how many times - for what the Genestealer Cult will do. And you have an Imperium that is much more callous than the US politicians who knowingly sent their troops into Vietnam to fail. Could the US have won in Vietnam? Potentially. Did they want to risk the fallout that winning in Vietnam could cause? No. The sad fact is for all sides that fought there is, they knew this before they even went in.

      @@richardwales9674 no Richard I saw the obviously heavily weighted in one way scenario setup. And was just trying to point out how ridiculous it was. I know that goes way over your head. The purpose of building a scenario. Is not to give all the advantage to one side and take away all the advantages of the other side. To equalize the Nerfs given to the custodis you would have to limit the genestealer cults to only three conversions per cultist per generation. And remember to get at the custodis the genestealers would have to attack the palace because that's where the custodis are. Until they threaten the Imperial Palace they are simply not the custodis responsibility.
      And now for your hot take on Vietnam, there were actually 4 different sides in the war. The North Vietnamese, the South Vietnamese, the American Military and finally the American politicians. General Giaps point was that the Vietnamese communist forces were taking enough casualties that they would soon have to suspend operations. But the American politicians not only forced the American Military out of supporting the South Vietnamese but also cut off their supplies of ammunition and other fungibles. Leading to the execution of slightly over 1 million South Vietnamese. By the way I don't have to read about these things I lived them.

    The setting has issues with the scale of things that are supposed to be extremely vast to give a sense of awe, terror, and hopelessness to the galaxy (Guard, Tyranid, Orks) and things that are supposed to be very heroic and elite. If you look at it soberly, the numbers of Space Marines are truly insignificant in the galaxy, probably never appearing in most conflicts. They claim that they are extremely powerful and that one of them is worth a hundred or thousands of Orks, but not only is this nowhere near enough to matter numerically, but that’s just their own fluff. In the fluff from Xenos perspective, there are countless examples of Tau, Eldar, Orks, etc. killing ordinary Astartes without much difficulty. The space marines aren’t enough numerous enough as chapters to be the “tip of the spear” at this point. They would need to still be far more numerous than their own fluff suggests. Even my own favorite chapter, Black Templars, do not make sense from a logistical and manpower perspective with what they’re supposed to be doing on the eternal crusade.

    One part about the custodes is that they are a security force and counterintelligence force as much as an army. They can put on the giant golden armour and hose down the street with archeotech bolter-halberds but they can also infiltrate places. The custodes themselves are probably the people in the universe with the most experience infiltrating the Imperial Palace.
    I always interpret them as much more socially and politically savvy than your average marine grunt who gets up, prays, trains and fights. They aren't enough to personally keep tabs on stuff but they are good at taking pulse on other imperial institutions and powerhouses to see what they're doing. A huge new cult rapidly growing is the kind of thing imperial institutions look out for even if it's for petty reasons like checking out potential rivals.

  • @GaldirEonai
    @GaldirEonai 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    There's three things working in the Imperium's favor there.
    First, imperial psykers can sense the broodmind once it reaches a certain size. No planet in the Imperium has more psykers than Terra.
    Second, the AdMech has genescanners that can easily detect the infection. They just need a reason to bring them out and deploy them en masse, and an inquisitor (Terra is also the planet with the most Inquisitors on it :P) getting even the faintest suspicion of stealer activity would definitely result in a few discreet calls to Mars. Once a cult is uncovered and if it hasn't yet subverted local authority enough to make an organized response impossible, it can be rooted out.
    Third, the population of Terra is _too big._ A cult can't quietly spread until it controls enough of the population to win in an uprising, because as it grows, so does the broodmind. And once it gets big enough it becomes impossible to hide from any competent psyker.
    Where genestealer cults are especially dangerous is the second or third tier of imperial world...populations big enough to easily fade into, but small enough to be sufficiently subverted before detection becomes inevitable.
    So...there probably are multiple genestealer cults active on Terra at any given time (likely working at cross purposes since they might be from different Hive Fleets...), and the Adeptus Arbites and Inquisition are engaged in a millennia-long game of whack-a-xeno, slapping them down as they appear, but the whole thing is just lost among the background noise of everyday life on Terra.

    Fully agreed on the 'Stealers winning. It's 'Nam all over again (has Rambo flashbacks). I really like the tragic Genestealer Cults lore. It's the 40K equivalent to Age of Sigmar's Flesh Eater Courts. Both factions are really tragic and inspired. What I really like about these Cults is that they are impossible to tell apart from Imperial cults, they look equally bizarre and crazy. And they can claim to worship the Emperor, it's just that this one has four arms!

    To be fair, much like how the Cult don't fight one on one, the Custodes don't fight alone either.
    As soon as the Cult are found, the security operatus goes nuts, the bulkheads cutting off the arcologies and hives from one another go down, the Guard mobilise, the Arbites, Sisters, Inquistors, Assassins, the Imperial Fists in orbit on the Phalanax. It's a lot of dudes.
    That said, my response to seeing a boxed set that was "a GSC uprising on Terra" was "...that means Terra is completely fucked".

    First of all, nice presentation. You thought this through. But I disagree about the Custodes losing. I think the Custodes do in fact win the *majority* if not all scenarios, given ofc they had access to their full gear and naval assets, every single time.
    Here's why: On paper it may look like a Genestealer uprising would overwhelm Terra's defenders easily in most cases because of the reasons you mentioned and you may be right when looking purely at statistics and timetable, if things played out mostly as the cultists wanted. But disregarding plot armor, we can't just look at Custodes in this particular instance, solely through their individual prowess. We must also factor in their resolve and resourcefullness. Same with their imperial allies and specificaly Terra, whole lot of other factors. But this is only about Custodes.

    I think it would literaly not matter to the Custodes if there were 150 million, or 150 billion cultists.
    The Custodes would simply not allow them to threaten the "live" of their Emperor. If it ever went down to a full blown Genestealer uprising on Terra, they might not resort to outright destroying the planet, for obvious reasons :v, but I'm 100% convinced, they would glass the entire surface around the Imperial Palace complex with their own fleet, that partialy weilds tech from the dark age and won't have difficulties obliterating any infested navy elements around Terra. Much to the dismay of the Terran populatoin, they would also not hesitate to reduce it to near 0. Ultimately it wouldn't matter to them if 99,9% died, so long as the Imperial Palace complex was cleansed and the Golden Throne was secure.
    I think they wouldn't even second guess it, if things were *that* dire. This is why I think, they would win most, if not arguably all fights. If it were any other planet, they would have even less remorse about just scouring it clean from orbit.

    A lot of pilgrims come to Terra. Just stepping foot on the birth-world of humanity is more important than any other cathedral world. Staggering loads of people arrive daily as well.
    Genestealer cults take a few generations to grow, I think. They are dependent on the patriarch and try hard to shelter the creature. This gets harder when you grow in size. The more people your conspiracy got in it, the greater the chance that some goon gets snagged in the imperial security net grows. Infiltrating local security organs is often a priority at this point, so you're the ones controlling the local militia.
    Some imperial security institutions are harder to infiltrate, the arbitrators aren't going to show up at your weird local party or mingle around, they don't let the astropaths out of their chamber and the administratum blokes stay locked inside. These dudes often become heavily armed imperial holdouts, but that's a delaying fight most of the time. Arbites buildings are small forts with silly amounts of heavy weapons but you can overwhelm them in time.
    The Imperium is a paranoid place where a fast-growing local sect is just the sort of thing someone keeps tabs on. An average factorium bloke or street enforcer might not but the powers that be are aware of just how many times weird cultist cells, xenos infections and other buggery was disguised by some dudes who put a robe and the aquila over the tentacles. In some stories they might have a battery of tests for infestation and screen a limited amount of people. Usually the above-mentioned ones, to make sure the arbites, a couple guard regiments or the dudes at the orbital laser defence aren't turned.

But it would require a game were the Genestealers respawn constantly but the empire holds them a bay with a lot of bolt rounds. Success would be measured by complex kill ratios. Could be fun though.
