It looks like the Thunderbird email tool was updated to the latest version just weeks after the video was released, annoyingly. The ImportExportTools NG add on is compatible with versions 68 to 78 of Thunderbird (latest version is 93). The older versions are archived online and can be downloaded discreetly. Once you have installed these the add on should work as expected.
First of all, thank you for the brief and detailed video. Just needed a refresher as I also used to work with Thunderbird for Gmail backup purposes and stumbled to the exact same issue that with one of the Thunderbird upgrades, the NG addon stopped working. So now, I just wanted to confirm that the NG addon is compatible with Thunderbird v.102.0.2 and works perfectly in my case.
You're a Life-Saver! It absolutely worked! There are way too many videos on this topic, that are not accurate... I'm very happy I discovered this video. Thanks a million!
Just using your instructions to get saved Gmail into another Gmail acct so I could close my other one. Seems to work but the Thunderbird prog is timing out a lot so I keep having to redrag the mbox folder to the inbox but I'm at around 1700 emails so about half done but I'll have to drag another 30 or 40 times b4 it's finished I guess. Thx a lot for this info. I'd have no clue how to do this w/o your vid!
It does work but... only for small amount of emails. Try it with sthg like 100k of emails... after some time it stops due to some timeout problems. I am surprised Google provides the option to export the mbox but doesn't provide the option to import it back🤷♂
I had 48K emails and happened the same stopped at 89. Since most of the emails were labeled just exported the most important once than imported them with the Thunderbird email tool into the new email address. It worked perfect.
Help needed please. My goal is to import all my emails to a NEW gmail account I have set up. However I missed the important detail that I needed to provide that NEW address to Thunderbird at the start. Now I am at the end of your tutorial. How do I correct my steps so that the emails are going to my NEW gmail account? Thank you!
Hi there - Thanks for the helpful and clear tutorial. Similar to others, I'm noticing the incompatibility between the latest Thunderbird version and the ImportExportTools NG; I'm also not finding access to the Thunderbird 78 (as you noted in your other responses when people noted this issue). Any advice here? Thanks so much!
Thank you. very nicely done. I have a question. When you rename and move the Old emails into your new account, does that affect the new account's storage capacity in the new Gmail account?
This tutorial was such a lifesaver for me. Can't thank you enough for this clear, thoughtful, well-explained walkthrough that worked perfectly for me, saving me hours of work.
Silly question but is there a way to my emails from Gmail and maintain folders and labels structure to make it easier to navigate, otherwise I am stuck with one large folder labelled 'all mail' Is there a workaround you may know of?
Thank you for your clear tutorial. However, I keep getting an error message at around the 200 email-mark that the file is too big. With more than 20k emails still to transfer from my imported mbox-inbox to my new Gmail-inbox (both in Thunderbird), I don't know what to do. Do you perhaps have a troubleshooter?
Hi - thank you for this guide. It saved me so much headache. I followed instructions and managed to download and import all my old emails. But when I got to copying the old emails from the local file to gmail, it stopped after 11 (of 7000+), what could the reason be?
Thanks for the very smooth and clear instructions. Tried to follow step by step unfortunately after trying to import my MBox file (32GB) nothing happened. Was it because my mbox file is too large? Do I need to upgrade my gmail capacity?
I'm sorry that didn't work for you. Alternatively, if your aim is to free up space, you could delete unimportant emails. The bulk of emails you receive are likely to be promotional emails - check out this Woggle Guide which explains how to find and delete promotional emails - th-cam.com/video/bnuvSLqfltU/w-d-xo.html
A different way to get the same outcome would be to target the largest emails in Gmail and store them separately. You're likely to find that 20% of emails will take up 80% of the space. Check ot this Woggle Guide which explains how to find large emails - th-cam.com/video/c9KEaGTn0QQ/w-d-xo.html
Hi Woggle! Can you help me out on this. I tried opening large Mbox File like 13GB to 32GB unfortunately it does not open on thunderbird. It only creat subfolder on the Local Folder. I also tried open small mbox file just for checking and it opened. Hoping that you can help me with it. This were my back up emails in Gmails coz i had to delete to recover same space in my gmail. Thanks
Hi - Yes, this approach can struggle with larger file sizes. It may be worth finding the larger emails in the MBOX file and saving these separately in smaller groups. The larger will usually have big attachments. If you're not sure how to do that, check out this Woggle Guide th-cam.com/video/c9KEaGTn0QQ/w-d-xo.html
hi, need some help. i followed all the process. in the last step, when copying Old folder to GMail inbox, the process stuck at only 200 emails. And then there are message that connection to Thunderbird is timed-out. What should I do to solve this? (my emails in OLD gmail is really a lot) Thanks
What do I do if all my files didn't transfer over to my gmail?? Do I repeat the process again or is it just a waiting game? If I close my laptop, will the process stop as well??
Thank you so much. I have a lot of emails (19K!) but at email 2899 it said the next one is to big. Therefore entire upload was cancelled. same happens if the connection is gone for just a second. Any idea how I can 'skip' an email or keep on loading. because I have no idea what has been done and hasn't because of size. Thanks!
Hi Raymond, thanks for your message. I've not heard of that one before to be honest. You don't say in your message if the issue is on the importing or exporting side of the backup but assuming you're importing, you could try and fudge it by downloading the large email individually to save to your computer. I'd guess the large size is due to some attachments, so if you can save these separately and download the email as an EML file then at least you will have copy of it. Once you happy you have an offline copy of the large email you can delete it and try again. Worst case, if it doesn't work you can restore the email from the trash folder as long as you do that within 30 days of deleting it so no harm done.
Hi - when you export your email data from Gmail its doesn't delete the emails from your account. It just adds a copy of the emails to a file that you can then import into another email client. Hope this answers your question.
I tried to download my TH-cam video's for about six times. Every time I downloaded the zipfile it contained a textfile of 1 MB but no video's. What have I done wrong? I followed all steps. Maybe bugs?
Hi Mark, yes you can store then in the email client if you prefer. As long as you keep your Gmail login details up-to-date it should download any new mails you receive.
Hi, thank you for the instructions and the note about the older version of Thunderbird. My emails are currently being added to my new Gmail account. But....they are all in one inbox, the received and sent...even spam. And the labels are gone.:/ They are all also showing as unread. At least that's the situation now while they are being uploaded.
Ok, all the emails are now in the Inbox subfolder in Thunderbird. They were showing in Gmail much slower than on Thunderbird. But even though all the emails are in Thunderbird, only about a half are actually in Gmail. I've thousands of emails. So either all transfer or I have no idea what has transferred and what hasn't. Ugghh... and all because Google didn't make this simpler for their own users.
Thank you for the instructions, worked like a charm. Google really needs to reevaluate the ease in which you can transfer messages from one Gmail account to another, but in the meantime, this did the trick.
Quick question for anyone that knows anything about Google. I'm downloading and exporting my data to something external from my Google account but I need to know if I'm still going to be able to view and or access all of my photos and data on my account and on the device itself?
You would think if Gmail creates a backup in a link for download to a PC, it would be nothing more than an upload to a gmail account all you need to do. They certainly making it next to impossible to do what should be simple.
that's what I need to do, I don't need thunderbird at all. reason for exporting was to delete frozen messages to clear the clutter but then need to see them once in a while. can't even import back to gmail 😵💫

Hi Woggle
I wonder if you would consider showing how to (1) delete a superfluous email account in Gmail? Thank you
That's a good suggestion. I will look to do that in the near future 👍

How we can do it in MS Outlook ?
Is it possible to do this without deleting the emails from the old account?
