What's the difference between identical and fraternal twins?

- Identical twins are basically clones, made from the same sperm and egg due to the splitting of a zygote. They typically portray different phenotypes and are distinguishable though.
Fraternal twins are like any other siblings from different sperms and eggs but born at the same time due to both ovaries releasing eggs at the same time.

"Hmm, looks like we have more time" IM DYING OF LAUGHTER
When a man and a woman meet, and they love each other very much...
paula zhuang
Have you seen the birth? 😂
XD I showed it to a friend and said "fav part of this is the first 15 seconds"
+1
I'm a Fraternal twin, My twin was and is the mistake
lmao
I have an identical twin, but other than our appearances we're nothing alike.
Me too . Oh the struggle
I have a fraternal twin she is annoying
Ajda Berker I'm a fraternal twin too :) me and my twin sister looks nothing alike ^^
Explained it better than my 7th grade teacher did in a week
Playasum I know right! I never understood where babies come from. No I do. I was a mist... I mean unplanned...
Ethen Rosas only one week , your lucky my class did it for 4 weeks
We don't make mistakes, we just have happy accidents.
No you were an accident.
Nipping Elk k.
Fake VeitLee
+David McGhee *screaming accidents
+Chase Stutts what
"they call that baby a mistake" HAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!
I'm dying omg XD!!!
But which one?
Gameskyjumper depends if they were planning on having a baby or not 😂 if they weren’t... both are mistakes if they were planning then... whatever egg was fertilized last (I think this would be the case)
lmao xD
I have a fraternal twin! We're both girls, but our looks and personalities are very different, but we're still best friends.
Best friend?
Somehow i didn't realize how rare fraternal twins are until now. Now that i think of it, i haven't even heard of anyone being fraternal twins (from my school, university, other people i know, their friends.. etc). I guess i just assumed that it's pretty ordinary and normal, as me and my brother are fraternal (non-identical).
Are they rare? I don't know any identical twins. I know 2 pairs of fraternal and quadruplets :P
+Anonymous11243 i don't think so (at least from my school/family/friends) i only know 1 set of fraternal yet i know 4 identical.
I'm a fraternal twin, my aunt is a fraternal twin, my first cousins are fraternal twins and I think their mother is a fraternal twin. I also know like 3 sets of fraternal triplets, I'm in high school I'm not sure how you've never known a fraternal twin
Adrian B i've never met twins whatsoever
I am a fraternal twin, I know another pair of fraternal twins, and I know a pair of identical twins
I wonder if anyone has had triplets. One being a twin, and the two others being identical twins based off the other cell of the original twin pair.
Are you saying chromosones or am I going crazy?
You're a nut! You're crazy in the coconut! What does that mean? That boy needs therapy.
th-cam.com/video/qLrnkK2YEcE/w-d-xo.html
I say chromosomes and chromatids in this video at various parts. Sorry for not speaking clearly, there are some subtitles that can help though.
It’s chromosones, absolutely 💯, you’re not 🅱️razy
👿🗣
I think I learn more from TH-cam than school and I'm a freshman in high school
Roy
Why am I watching this at 2am? On a Thursday (Friday?).
Omfg I died when u said mistake
Yeah, this "mistake" thing was a bit... harsh. But the video is informative. :3
i quess he thought it was funny
@@mysteriousstranger2477 i thought it was funny
im a twin
I asked my dad if I was unplanned (because I’m a twin) he just changed the subject
so can there be triplets but one of them is fraternal?
+4r7ur Yep! Mom releases 2 eggs, each is fertilized by a different sperm, then ONE of the zygote's splits to form identical twins, leaving the other fraternal twin by itself. :)
4r7ur yes.
Would the same thing apply to quadruplets? Would both set of twins be identical but also fraternal?
@@kentuckyfriedmuffins2461 Im guessing there could be a few combinations. All could be identical, as the zygote could split twice, but perhaps not all could be fraternal, as there is only ever a max of two eggs to be fertilized? but again, just guessing.
Subbed right after "if you are a twin". Ahhh, the Glory of LOGIC!
a trillion doesn't have a trillion zeros...
Blueconroy
That would create a feedback loop in math. However you define 'trillion,' that statement would redefine it as a much larger number. Infinitely.
That is a good joke and/or a really cool concept.
My best friend is an identical twin, and her twin sister has Autism, and I've always thought they were fraternal twins that looked identical.
the music was super distracting
I love studying the genetics/biology of twins! I just did a video on my channel that answers commonly asked questions like whether identical/fraternal twins run in families, can they skip a generation, etc.
harsh bro 'mistake ' come on
IKR???? >:(
You are my new favorite YT-ber
Twins are only an "unplanned" mistake if their parents did it the "natural" way. In vitro allows you to have multiples on purpose, however.
Also, the point about Barr bodies (inactive X) was a cool tidbit.
Yeah... My parents did it naturally and now I'm part of a set of triplets. Mistakes were made.
Meme Celt Cool. Your situation is quite rare. :)
Liuhuayue in my primary school, there were 3 sets of triplets, 4 sets of twins and 2 sets of identical twins
Meme Celt
That's neat; I think I've only met twins before, though I've met a bunch of twin sets. For most parents, however, multiples are pretty rare.
Yoooo! What about fraternal and identical quadruplets? The two zygotes that create fraternal twins spontaneously split and create two of each fraternal twin!
“We call that a mistake,”
no has to be the same gender I am a twin identical. It is weird iguess but not really if you think about it. Most of the same thoughts but i like knowing someone is thinking the same thing, makes me feel more alive.
Isn't the This Place misunderstanding, or at least misrepresenting, the chromosomes ? Yes chromosomes are X shapes with two chromatids right before mitosis and meiosis, but most of the time they are linear (as well as uncondensed) !
To say that you have to replicate your 23 chromatids from your mother and your 23 from your father to form "full chromosomes" is very misleading. Yes in G2, when they are uncondensed in the "X-state", there can be a lot of transcription in preparation for mitosis, but the same can be said for G1 and the chromosomes on their linear uncondensed state, and a lot of our cells have gone out of the cell cycle and will never again have two chromatids per chromosome.
0:43 I think I'm going to show this to the woman I decide to marry when she's having second thoughts about birthing.
This would be perfect for my class if you did not tell my twins that one of them was a mistake... any chance you can have a version I could use that won't upset a twin?
Well this changes what I know about fraternal twins. I originally learned fraternal twins came from two separate eggs, fertilized by two separate sperm cells, from two separate fathers
Jensettiman Those would be fraternal half-twins. Fraternal half twins are possible, but rare. Hopefully rare.
Most fraternal twins have the same father, and simply two different sperm. They are as closely related as any other possible pair of children from the same mother and father.
Are u crazy . I'm a fraternal twin and me and my sister have the same father . The ur facts right
I find it sad that one of the twins is considered a mistake. 😕
So that's why my cousin, who was born blond and her identical twin sister was also born and still is blond, turned brunette during her later teen years
I mean, I kind of already knew identical twins weren't _exactly_ the same in terms in phenotype, but now I know the reason
Forgive me if i have misunderstood what you are saying but at 1:34 you have said that chromatids replicate once they get into a daughter cell following the process of mitosis. I believe the replication is completed before mitosis and following this the chromatids (which can be called chromosomes now) arrange into homologous pairs so that the genes can be correctly read to make proteins.
Can someone please tell me that what is the twin called when the the burst zygote remeet????
I’m learning more about babies at home then I do at school..
Identical twin came from one egg cell and the fraternal twin came from two egg cell. A identical twin can't be identified cause they have same face but the fraternal twins can be identified cause they dont have similar face
At 1:13 you said gender rather than sex.
take down the video and do it again! =P
Na just playing.
nonnels no he didn't
Ugh he stopped at the surface of the problem! Show everybody how horrifying parasitic twins could be.
So that means if both ovaries produced an egg and both of them got fertilised, AND then split during a zygote, then there will be quadruplets?
Orange and yellow twins in the thumbnail, Mother 3 anyone?
I'm the youngest of fraternal triplets... Well. Mistakes were made.
I'm the unplanned twin then❤
I know like 3 identical twins.
The Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
But my parents had 4 fertilized eggs injected into them so they expected 3 but got 2 soo… I WAS PLANNED!
Fraternal twins that have identical twins damn that would get confusing fast
I'm pretty sure 70 tillion isn't any where close to a 7 followed by a trillion 0s also seems like a strange thing say anyways to tells that's how to espress the number for no reason and still get it wrong.
Woosh
It's weird because my sister and I are fraternal but we look Identical
70 trillion is not 7 followed by trillion 0's.
I think he ment; 7 followed 0 and the word trillion xP
I cracked up at that part too. I think he did that on purpose to see if his voice has put us to sleep mid-way.
But what happens if the X chromosome doesn't get deactivated on the female's body? What happens then? What does it cause?
There are identical twins at my school. But one has a birth mark on their face. But they look the same.
How dare you say that one twin was a mistake!!! I'm a twin and we were both a blessing to our parents!!!
+Debra Brown What if YOU'RE not the mistake?
+Kian Nugget
look I think it doesn't matter children are born bless by god they were not a mistake. because that might a child want to go kill him/herself.
the only thing that was planned was the PREGNANCY
If you plan a pregnancy, then you obviously planned a baby. Besides, being christian doesn't make a better opinion.
Kian Nugget no matter how many babies you still planned to get pregnant. NEVER call a child a mistake.
*Cough cough* Science just did up there.
what about triplets?
The difference is one is identical and one is faternal
so, if i were to have a twin, would i be a mistake or would my sister/brother be a mistake? HMMM....
So what my parents told me was true... They only wanted an 11 year old son, not a 13 year old daughter.
Wait so does this mean me and bro have different dads
Fun fact: Due to so many things that can go wrong to make one sterile; it is truly a "miracle" that one can actually have kids.
Hannah Stahl It is not a miracle, it is a wonder.
A miracle implies that it happens in spite of the laws of nature.
There are two reasons why miracles happen:
A: Ignorance
B: Photoshop
I am a fraternal twin and I'am a girl and my brother is a boy AND WE LOOK NOTHING ALIKE and every one always thinks my brother is older and he only is bey one minute.
I guess I am a mistake then :(
oof
What do you call twins that share the same room?
Wombmatess
i showed this to my fraternal twin brother and he laughed at me and called me mistake cuz he is 10 minutes older than me! how dare he!
Isn't it nice to be an unplanned mistake? :'D
We are twins....
This is weird to watch
Dat aliens reference tho
sounded like he said chromotits
Question. So female identical twins can be different as result of which X chromosome becomes active. If the same X chromosome becomes active then that means that they will be identical identical?
My twins are very fraternal- they looked alike when they were little- not anymore! @
having a twin would be cool
Fraternal's can also be intentional, via In Vitro.
i LOVE THIS GUY. i LOVE THIS PLACE!
did not need to see that conjoined twin picture
0:43
There's the devil baby...oh, so you think the next one will be another devil? Hahahahahhaahhahahaahhaahahahahaha, no.
The next one is silent.
The chromosomes are only in the paired formation during mitosis/meiosis. Your portrayal is a bit misleading and incorrect.
I know 1 set of fraternal twins (girls)
1Set of fraternal triplets (girls)
4 sets of identical twins (2 boys 2girls
What about triplets? And quadruplets?
My parents were expecting to have fraternal twins which one will be a boy and the other be a girl (me). However, when I was born, I was born as a boy so that makes me and my brother identical twins. So does make a mistake?
I have an twist :// our friends don't know witch is witch
That means my friend is a unplanned mistake XD
Anyone else came here frol the dolan twins?
What about in the rare case where two twins are born with different fathers. Would the mother's have had two eggs during menstruation, and have had intercourse with two different males within a short time period. Since sperm only lasts a few days inside the. ... uterus? And the two eggs have been fertilized by the 2 different sperm, It's rare, but it has happened,
The way he says chromosome as chromosone is annoying >.
I got a question does a woman always have eggs in her uterus so in another sense a woman can have a baby without having sex why would that be possible without a male sperm can somebody please answer that for me
im a single child
and im a mistake :3
I'm a fraternal twin, and I am a mistake.
he said he was a mistake
My identical twin and I realized on our own that one of us was the mistake and it’s a joke between us but I think we both were XD
My dad has a fraternal twin.
identical twins look exactly like each other. fraternal twins don't look exactly like each other. split twins are 1 girl and 1 boy. split twins can look like each other but they are not the same gender.
I'm a mistake, as I am told almost everyday by my family 🙃
God this hurt my brain ill just go back to watching funny cat videos!
I'm a fraternal twin.
My twin sister has sickle cell and I don't , so sad
isnt it the sperm which decides gender not the egg, so if there are 2 different sperm then should it be possible for identical twins to be different genders?
martinshoosterman Identical twins is when the zygote (a fertilized egg) splits. They come from 1 sperm and 1 egg. I think that's what I said in the video. I hope that's what I said, I don't really want to watch it again to find out.
This Place ok that is what you said in the video, sorry you were right. is it possible for the egg to split before fertilization causing some sort of semi identical twins, like similar twins
Yeah I've read about that. They've only just found it out for sure recently apparently.
martinshoosterman Two sperm do not fertilize one egg. If that ever happened, the 69 chromosomes would not allow the new cell to duplicate.
Fraternal twins have two independent sperm/egg combinations.
Identical twins have the same sperm and the same egg, that splits after it fertilizes.
If a person is a boy and another person is a girl, are they identical? ....................... -_-
Is there a difference between sex and gender? How is gender determined?
me and my twin are fraternal I think. but we kinda look alike
siblings look alike. no surprise there.
that's the glory of twins
Identical twins is from one egg cell but the fraternal twins is form from two egg cell abd the identical twin have desame face that we could not identify and the fraternal twins their are twins but not desame face
HAHAHAHA I was born first so I think my twin sister was the mistake 😂
Why the hell am I here I hate scienceOh yeah I have to watch this for science homework *dies*
really hope in the future I get to see my lil girl that I see in my dreams . had mistakes but wishing I get her to be a twin. #nativeamerican #wish
Did u see the girl?
Sorry, "70 trillion" is not "a 7 followed by a trillion zeros" any more than 7 million is a 7 followed by a million zeros. No there's only 6. 70 trillion, is 70 with 12 zeros after.
I know this was five years ago, but its 70 trillion, not 7 trillion. 70 million would be the correct analogy, 7 followed by a million zeros
