For more context. A compact .22 short pistol generates between 60 and 100 joules. A framing hammer swung over the distance of 1 meter generates between 25 and 35 joules. A 40 gram bean bag from a shotgun produces 80 to 90 joules, but spread out over a serface area of about 4 inches. Swinging a 3/4 inch diameter stick 24 inches long over the space of a meter produces between 30 and 50 joules. Falling onto the ground while running (provided you don't attempt to catch yourself) can generate between 40 and 80 joules. All of these things are potentially (and probably) lethal, esp. if it hits you in the head. Small bones generally start breaking around 40 joules and large bones generally start breaking around 80 joules, but the exact nature of the impact, angle, anatomy and leverage makes a huge difference in those numbers. Damage could potentially happen as much as 20 joules lower or higher than that. A weighted, semisolid projectile 7/16 inch diameter producing 39 joules of force is also absolutely a probabilistically lethal round. Definitely Don't Do This At Home!
Your calculations sound a bit off. I estimated a falling body. Lets say your weighing 100kg and you fall 1 meter (reasonable for a trip?), so you'd impact with 9,81 m/s that gives us 4811.81 Joule already.

Although it is an important point, if you can you should definitely just go for a firearm. The issue is that your home is the last line if you're unprepared. That's the important distinction. A firearm is absolute every time (just so long as you aren't unreasonably inaccurate), even in the most dire of situations. If this is the best you can get than it isn't a question, but if it isn't then don't unless you live by yourself.

Using it on people you just don't like on the other hand is just selfish and cowardly. His example of a psychotic ex. I think that's more complicated. 1 time is a warning, so it shouldn't need a lethal reaction. Anything after that though, the person is too crazy to be safely kept around, and it's their actions that show that since no sane and respectable person would return after a warning unless they're willing to reach extreme measures. Luckily I live in a state that is more lenient on gun ownership and self-defense, but my statement is for those protecting others besides themselves. When the lives of loved ones are on the line, sacrificing one's own freedom and maybe even life is already a forethought (or at least should be).

@@letsdothis9063 well you are right. We are Just talking about the specific non lethal gun here. Personally I would prefer the psychological "safety" of a Glock (yes you have to know how to use it,how to assess quickly the situation,to be able to operate under stress and not to freeze, so you need training etc etc etc.)
I like the added 'with lethal backup'. Somehow it seems as if people use lethal optionas their go to and, if they have a backup at all, it's poorly thought out. Having (a) the mental concept and distinction between known and unknown threats and (b) a less lethal tool with a lethal backup sounds waaaay more thoughtful to me
No way. You're telling me if your KNOW there's an intruder in your house and you have a lethal option, you're going to be foolish enough to go deal with the threat with a non lethal "primary"? When shit hits the fan you have less than 2 seconds to stop the threat. You're not going to be switching between weapon options mid catastrophy.
@@aydinsha it depends. If it's just some random stranger (UNKNOWN threat or threats) Who's already IN your home, maybe you should step it up. But if it's a KNOWN threat (aka you know the person, their capabilities and motives) Who is just outside being a dick, that leaves you with way more options. Also, as stated in the video, not everyone can have or want to have firearms. Here in Germany for example, we usually can't have guns for home or self defense. (We also can't have pepper ball dispensers with more than 7.5 Jules... So... Damn...) But still, some people just refuse to have a gun (absolutely within their rights, even if I personally disagree) And others might have reservations to take a life (most people btw, even the ones who are oh so tough... They are not.) Amd than also, if you KNOW the threat and its capability, you can make a pretty well informed decision. If the threat is NOT a threat to your life, maybe think twice about killing him... Even when it's technically legal... Or, even if you are that rare individual, who actually can take someone's life without remorse (unlikely but certainly possible) even when you know for a fact that the person can't or won't kill you (very possible with known threats) and even if you would escalate to lethal force whenever (technically) justified (which would be well within your rights) than that's still just you and your decision. Other people might decide to take the risk (which is kinda small anyways since we're still taking about a known threat) and take the non or less lethal option as a primary and the lethal option as a backup. It's what I would do and what probably most people should do. In the end it's a very personal and individual decision, based on a shitton of variables, most of them are kimda clear with known threats.
@@manuelschmoller2884 Unknown threat should always be lethal IF you are protecting others is what people should think. You aren't serious otherwise. Besides that I agree. Though to make people have the idea of its capability, I think it should be called deterrence. That way people won't fool themselves into situations that this could put them into. If a second person can take up the firearm then it can be excused as a first option since the other person would be there at the ready, but if it's only one acting then that is a different story since that's a whole lot for one to do and decide in such a potentially short time.

I'm former LEO and OC spray is trash. All it does is piss someone off and make them more violent. Hell, even the taser doesn't work many times. I doubt everything you wrote is even true if you're saying such a stupid thing.
Some would see the barrel of this kit and reconsider. Others require demonstrations. My hesitations would be reload, size, and once you fire any projectile the other person may return fire with lethal rounds… in the street fight scenarios. 5-7 rounds, you must be on target… 8-13 rounds plus spare magazine =spray and pray.
Bro.. you got some freakin Balls!! I would have never done that..I have one of those Grimburg Gavle, and tested on a piece of 1/2” plywood from about 25 to 30 feet and it went right through it!! I had to stop testing it after the first shot because it’s freakin loud.. I didn’t want the neighbors to call the cops! 😂 Thank you 🙏 tho for taking one for the team! 👍 Great video keep up the good work 🤙🏾
So, for the house. Have you ever considered just using a paintball gun ? I worked for a mechanic, he had a back lot full of junkers. We'd constantly get people coming to steal scrap, we had a "security guard". And his weapon of choice was a Tippman 98 modded to shoot hard with a mix of pepper and rubber balls. He used it multiple times without getting reported, and every time the poor bastard scrambled out however they got in
@@hard2hurt Mike when you showed us your chest where the round impacted, I was very alarmed. I hope it healed and that you are well. I enjoy your channel very much.🙏
You'll enjoy your Grimburg Gavle. It's a great launcher. I have a Umarex HDX 50 Joules 16 shot Shottie I use for home defense. Eventually I'll have enough saved up to either get a Gavle or the Solstice when it comes out next year.
I havent seen a lot of people take an impact round from the gavle to the chest. I think this will help a lot of people make an informed self defense choice. Thank you for risking your own health. I hope you heal well.
Wouldn't want to test that theory out! That said, I watched a guy get shot through the throat with a 5.56 round out in Iraq. He did a somersault, grabbed his throat, got up and ran about a half mile away before disappearing into the distance.
Thats still a mortal wound or grievous injury and and definitely a deterrent😅 it really sounds they person shot is in a state of dying to me @waltimus
Hey, i bought an pistol umarex tp50 11 joules. My brother and I tested it on each other and it really hurts, no joke, a training cartridge in the stomach brings you to your knees in pain. And you ate 38 joules... Big respect
39J meant next to nothing to me, so I looked up some things to compare it to. A .22LR from a rifle is about 180J, a 9mm defensive load will be about 550J, or an arrow fired from a compound bow for hunting will typically be around 100J. The arrow is going to have less energy because the energy calculation square the velocity, so with an arrow's higher mass and lower velocity, it has less energy. The arrow overcomes this by the shape of the arrowhead and momentum. The takeaway I'm getting is that the pepper balls are going to be miserable to be hit with, and the hard ammo may actually be lethal, depending on where it hits. You definitely don't want one of these hitting you in the head or throat.
@@hyperfluous whether or not its lethal depends entirely on the *size* of the projectile. Look up captive bolt research, 68 joules is listed as inneffective stun and 450 joules is often not enough to kill cattle. 100 joules to a human head is probably going to cause some brain damage but they will probably live.
I hope Grimburg cut you a HUGE cheque after that! Not because you acted, but because that was an awesome product review. Love your content. Many thanks.
I'm very interested in this. I've really been thinking about how to handle a situation that doesn't justify lethal force, but requires some type of force
@@OTT-JVIt makes me wonder about the "less than lethal" part. I could see the thing penetrating the gut, or maybe killing on a head shot, certainly it could knock a person out.
If you are in a situation that requires force, it better be lethal. The other person is not going to share your optimism; they are a criminal after all. Using something like this only scares the little fishes away. You could probably scare the little fishes away by standing up straight and acting like you own it. So if this doesn't do lethal, and you can just act strong to scare off the little fishes, so what is it for? Yeah, just saying.
I have one and a Byrna HD. Both excellent. The cool thing about these is you can stack your rounds. I stack 7 rounds as rubber/steel, OC gas, rubber/steel, OC gas/ the rest rubber/steel. You can put the rounds in which ever way you feel the need to. Suggestion: Buy the orange versions of these weapons. I think it’s good to know this is not a firearm in most situations.
I'd rather someone in my home thinks it's a real gun. Police are knocking my door down as I play by the rules. I would not carry this outside concealed, too bulky in my opinion for that. But for the home, especially where I live (basically in top of neighbors in any direction) I could see this being viable to prevent over penitration. If someone was to carry this in public I could also see orange being a good option, but I feel conceal n carry is best with a compact shorter barrel actual fire arm.
Next time on Houston Jones. 😬 Very insightful video. This would be an excellent alternative in circumstances where maybe people have issues with mentally ill/addicted loved ones. Where the loved one is an active threat and escalating and you need a deterrent until law enforcement arrives. The impact zone is immediately noticeable through the chest hair, I though it had removed skin like a rock salt round would, still immediately noticeable after 4 days.
I've witnessed the autopsy of two dead bodies who died when police was shooting with rubber bullets out of rifels from too close distance at attackers. The bullets went through their skulls. Therefore "less lethal" is the right describtion for such kind of weapons. Also imagine it hits an eye. Still great for selfdefense, just people must be aware that it might be lethal.
@@airgunballistics1779 two things came together: 1. it was not allowed to shoot with this rifles on a shorter than certain minimum distance, maybe 5m, I don't remember. But when the police offcers were faced with a situation where they could not run away and only had the choice between using leathal pistols, trusting their health or lives to the attackers or use the rubber bullets, the choice was easy and they did not care anymore about the rule and shot on shorter distance. 2. later it came out that the bullets were over a "best before date" and stored too long, the rubber was hardned and they should not have been used anymore.

I just saw a badgecam earlier today where a subject without a shirt was hit with a beanbag round from a shotgun and it penetrated his chest cavity resulting in his death. Fabric layer(s) over soft tissue do spread out the force and tend to prevent/reduce over-penetration, which is likely why he wore a hoodie and t-shirt. Plus his chest hair probably helped, too. 😃I certainly wouldn't want to test this shirtless. As a teen in the early '80's I had a friend shoot me with my pellet rifle with ten pumps at 100', while wearing a t-shirt, flannel shirt and military jacket. While it did not penetrate the fabric, it did leave a blackened center with a 2" welt and I was jumping around like a wounded jackrabbit. other areas were protected with plywood.
It might work well for law enforcement. They often have people refuse to get out of their vehicles. Penetrate a window that isn't occupied and fill the car with pepperballs.
The only downside is the whole "I can't breathe" aspect. Could be very difficult maintaining forcible restraint on a perp under the conditions some of these pepperballs/spray inflict onto a body and have it hold up in court. I really DO like the idea tho! Perhaps just a different chemical mix.
"This is going to come as a shock to you, YOU are not the only person on the planet". That delivery was gold. This is the first time I've watched this guy. I'm actually glad he did a live test with multiple layers of clothing. I've been eyeing a gavle for awhile now because I don't want to own a firearm (yes, I am one of those millions of people he spoke of) but want an effective home protection weapon. After watching this video I have 0 questions as to it's effectiveness and will be purchasing one in the near future.
This is by far the most impressive less lethal human demonstration on TH-cam period bottomline. No one dared to get shot by the Grimburg TCP/FSC modified less lethal launcher. But this badass took a shot in the chest, he deserves more subscribers/views. Plus he does have an awesome real self defense life situations
You often hear stories of people being shot and not even realizing it aside from a warm sensation. Based on your reaction, this thing feels much less lethal and much more deterring.
Appreciate you brother. I'm one of those people who just does not want an actual firearm. This seems like the best option. Thanks for taking the hit to confirm it's viability for home defense.
I had my son shoot me in the stomach with my pepper ball gun using the rubber rounds. I don’t think mine is nearly as powerful as the one you have there but one shot to my belly put me on the ground. Usually my reaction to pain is rage but all I felt was panic and wanted to get as far from it as possible. Told my son if he ever had to use it and it didn’t stop the threat in a couple shots, just run away because it ain’t human lol
How quickly can you ready it? Would you say it's equivalent to carrying a handgun with the chamber empty and having to rack it to ready it? More? Less?
Assuming you already loaded it, You just have to twist the cylinder to pressurize and you're in business. It literally takes as long as it would take you to close a bottle of water to get the Gavle in a ready state

Mike, in what situations do you recommend this over other non-lethal force options? I'm European and this things still seems overkill to me for 99.9% of situations. Also, can you discuss the effects of this looking like a gun? I think very often it would make people run away, or draw their own gun... Thanks for this great vid!
Brilliant, from Icy Mike to Ice Pack Mike after just one ball. As you know, in the uk we are very hobbled when it comes to self defence or home defence, but I got interested in the use of markers as a deterrent after my grandson Jake shot me in the arse cheek with an ordinary Spyder paintball marker from over 20 feet away and it hurt like all ***k. This type of tool is a great equaliser.
1. This can kill someone when loaded with metal projectiles, thus it is lethal force to a jury. (Imagine an eye hit from 3 feet away) 2. It's not orange, it looks like a gun. To an untrained ear, it sounds like a gun. If you pull this on a guy - you just elevated the verbal/fisticuffs fight to a gunfight. When they hear that thing crack off, they're going to assume they're getting shot with a real gun. Maybe that makes them run away? Maybe it makes them draw a real gun and smoke you.
It is stupid to make a less than letal weapon identical to a fire arm. I bought the one you reviewed last year which has a flashlight shape… why would you put yourself in danger of being shot by an attacker thinking that you have a firearm? Even the law would protect that attacker is he shoots you
Well. Defending your house yes, if that's what you want. My house nope. My bedside rifle is a .45/70 and my side arm is a .45. Old school works for me.
I appreciate your dedication to your "craft" and to your search for a realistic experience in your effort to provide an honest opinion regarding the effectiveness of these defensive tools.
As a travel Xray tech, I cross state lines every few months towing my camper with me. I don’t know where I will go next sometimes and also have to leave on short notice sometimes. I want a self defense tool for my self and “home” that is legal anywhere I go. I’m definitely interested in this.
Good video, thanks. Refreshing view on the "make my day" mentality - even when it's 100% justifiable, dealing with the aftermath of a lethal force shooting is no fun for anyone . Unfortunately, many countries here in Europe also prohibit gas-operated weapons with more than 7.5 Joules of muzzle energy, making this Grimble almost as illegal as an unlicensed firearm.
Ya know, I've always felt like your reviews of stuff were very realistic and well thought out. So giving this such high praise is surprising to me. I think it's pretty cool and I'm glad it exists for the reasons you mentioned.

I agree with your statement that some people shouldn't own an actual firearm. I'm a pistol instructor, in NY state and I bought my step daughter, with 4 kids, the Byrna SD and I also provided pepper rounds. She had a bad relationship, (he eventually was sent to prison over it) and although I love her I don't trust her with lethal defense. I also trained her oldest twins how to use it and checked them for accuracy and under pressure acquiring the launcher, taking aim and firing 3 rounds accurately, in case Mom wasn't home and anyone made their way into their apartment. That being said, my girlfriend and I do alot of RV'ing on weekends and in an RV/Trailer court setting, where walls are only 3" thick at best, less than lethal would be king especially in NY state where the jury of 12 as well as most judges want to make an example of anyone using a firearm. I have the Byrna LE and after watching this video, I may just have to upgrade to more "Horsepower". Also, I'm 5' 6" and about 170lbs at the moment. After 30 years of martial arts training and being a Marine vet, salute for having the "courage" to take one in the chest, to demonstrate the Gavel's power. Peace be with you all but, if evil makes it's way in, let's be prepared.
When doing through the gas house training during the academy we went through CS gas was called Chicken Sh*t Gas. I just received got my Gavle and love it. My biggest concern with other Less Lethal Launchers on the market was stopping power of someone wearing denim or leather jacket. I can tell you getting hit wearing either will stop the attack. The Gavle was built from the ground up making it a rather robust launcher. Remember in most gun encounters a civilian just presenting something looking like a firearm is going to end the issue. Also, it's a launcher so if you need to take your shot, do so, run to safety and call the police because the first one who calls is generally not the one who will go to jail. In this day and age it's better to be armed than not armed but situational awareness is also important. Which means being aware of your surroundings at all times while out in COP language we call it condition yellow. As to the home invasion scenario I'm currently testing out a less lethal launcher which has the ability to send 19 rounds down range at 19 joules or with an upgrade up to 60 joules but this is NOT cheap and is also built from the ground up.
I’m sure someone else has said it, but I would alternate the rounds between kinetic and CS that way you’re hitting them with the best of both so three kinetic and two CS thats stopping just about anybody
Mike, I was worried enough when you asked me to hit you in the leg with a bokken that one time. And in spite of the fact that you clearly survived this experiment in order to upload this video, I was genuinely concerned for your life the entire time I was watching this. How far away from the weapon were you when you took the hit? And what do you think a close range shot would do in comparison?
We were exactly 30 feet. I think at close range, especially typical self defense range, that this thing could break bone or penetrate. It was terrifying.
This is the PERFECT option for someone like me who lives in Canada, where defending yourself with a firearm can land you in jail. Definitely ordering one of these ASAP!
You should look into what truckers call "tire thumpers" as a self defense tool. A lot of trucking companies will not let us carry weapons of any kind, and driving across the country can put us in a lot of jurisdictions pertaining to firearms, and state troopers can inspect our trucks at any time. this makes us somewhat of a target at truck stops, rest areas etc. A tire thumper is essentially a wooden club, but since we use it to "thump the tires" checking for air pressure, it is a "tool". Some truckers say to use the thumper in self defense, many of us just take the risk and conceal carry anyway, but I would love your perspective on what would actually be a good tool for self defense that a trucker would reasonably have, whether in the cab or in the truck stop or while fueling up, I think it could make for a good video.
I've been on the road for 20 years. Wasp spray worked every time, and YES, I know it's not a CS weapon. Only twice did I have to fire it off. And even then, I shot off a stream deliberately missing and then centered upon the face of the intruder. They always ran off. Yes, I probably got lucky.
Just put on a winter coat. .68 caliber won’t penetrate that and it’ll provide some padding as well. The hdr50 is what a lot folks play and tinker with. It isn’t recommended for any airgun to left charged with co2. It’ll vary greatly and irregularly depending on outside temperature. If you want more power put it on your dashboard on a warm day for a few minutes then put it in the gun and shoot it. But if it’s colder it’ll drop in velocity greatly.

As far as a "known threat at home" kind of scenario, this looks like a fantastic in-hand primary....
With a lethal backup
Not to be used indoors or up wind, could pepper yourself? 🤪😏
If it's just some random stranger (UNKNOWN threat or threats)
Who's already IN your home, maybe you should step it up.
But if it's a KNOWN threat (aka you know the person, their capabilities and motives)
Who is just outside being a dick, that leaves you with way more options.
Also, as stated in the video, not everyone can have or want to have firearms. Here in Germany for example, we usually can't have guns for home or self defense. (We also can't have pepper ball dispensers with more than 7.5 Jules... So... Damn...)
But still, some people just refuse to have a gun (absolutely within their rights, even if I personally disagree)
And others might have reservations to take a life (most people btw, even the ones who are oh so tough... They are not.)
Amd than also, if you KNOW the threat and its capability, you can make a pretty well informed decision.
If a second person can take up the firearm then it can be excused as a first option since the other person would be there at the ready, but if it's only one acting then that is a different story since that's a whole lot for one to do and decide in such a potentially short time.

i have been in many physical altercations. i live in a bad area. i carry two guns - a 357 and a backup revolver in 22 mag. that said, i feel like OC spray (less lethal) will cover 90% of problems. you are totally right, and the crowd who thinks otherwise has never actually dealt with real violence.

My wife, Ashley, commentating during your "other people exist" was perfectly timed 😂
He used it multiple times without getting reported, and every time the poor bastard scrambled out however they got in
Paintball guns are bulky!
@pixusru the two examples he gave at the beginning are examples where you could easily keep a paintball gun stowed in a closet with spicy rounds.

I havent seen a lot of people take an impact round from the gavle to the chest. I think this will help a lot of people make an informed self defense choice. Thank you for risking your own health. I hope you heal well.
If this hits your throat you are dead 100%. Good thing your friend had decent aim. Man I love you for this, the realest out here!
Thanks man!
@waltimus Hey man I wanted to thank you for your service thoroughly m 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 God bless you
Hey, i bought an pistol umarex tp50 11 joules.
“You’ve got some broken ribs, your jaw is wired shut, and we had to remove both your gonads…. But it didn’t kill you!”
Airsoft guns are usually around 1j if that helps put it in context of something you might have been hit with.
49j is roughly the minimum for deadly energy so its close
@@hyperfluous whether or not its lethal depends entirely on the *size* of the projectile. Look up captive bolt research, 68 joules is listed as inneffective stun and 450 joules is often not enough to kill cattle. 100 joules to a human head is probably going to cause some brain damage but they will probably live.
Kinda defeats the prurpose of the "less lethal" thing doesn't it?
I hope Grimburg cut you a HUGE cheque after that! Not because you acted, but because that was an awesome product review.

Suggestion:
Buy the orange versions of these weapons. I think it’s good to know this is not a firearm in most situations.
You said most situations... I can only think of one situation and it is an extremely rare one. Can you describe this situationm
@@hard2hurt you pull it out on someone with a real firearm, or police see it. Orange makes it known that’s it’s 99% a less than lethal weapon.
I wouldn't stack rounds in this unless your using the soft spring. The pepperball WILL explode in the barrel with the hard spring

Very insightful video.

I know people who were shot with pellets and the pellets got lodged in them and either got pulled out or are still there
I would suggest using a vest to test before trying on flesh

It might work well for law enforcement. They often have people refuse to get out of their vehicles. Penetrate a window that isn't occupied and fill the car with pepperballs.
I can see nothing going wrong with this.
The only downside is the whole "I can't breathe" aspect.
Could be very difficult maintaining forcible restraint on a perp under the conditions some of these pepperballs/spray inflict onto a body and have it hold up in court.

Paradigm

Solid performer with this air powered co2 cartridge especially with the metal ball round. Nice video.
Awesome video, I didn't know such a thing even existed.
