    I think the 4.7 is one of the most under appreciated engines on the planet. I've owned two of them (01 Dak/07 1500) and both were animals and served me well. my 07 1500 even towed better than my current 1500 Hemi. The bottom end torque they produce is outstanding.

      You have to be joking, i went in my local machine shop the other day and there was these junk engines laying everywhere with holes in top of pistons on most of them where the valve seat fell out of the head. Never heard anyone say they were good engines lol. No offense, i hope yours last forever, i just would hate for you to get too far from home with it.

    • @kenrobinson1099
      @kenrobinson1099 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dreece2000 You didn't point out which generation of the 4.7 they were. My guess would be 1st gens. they had problems with valve seats. Gen II engines did not suffer with the problem and were the vast majority of the 4.7's used Dodge/Rams, Durango's, and Dakota's.. but dropping valve seats was not exclusive to the 4.7. Ford and Gm both had their share is nightmares with dropped valve seats, cracking, and so on (also includes those asian and euro products as well) until they got the recipe corrected.

      @@dreece2000 Mines got 270,000 miles on it. Still tows and hauls great. These engines are far from being junk. Id take one of these over a 2v or 3v triton *any* day, and I'd even go as far as saying they are as good or better than their closest competition at the time, the 4.6 Ford Modular. Ive owned both. I didn't like being far from home in that stupid 4.6 Panther body. I had to keep spare ignition coils in the trunk and I was always chasing vacuum and intake leaks. It had a leaky injector that burned up both catalysts and left me on the highway. The 4.7 has been better in every way in my experience. No engine issues in all those miles.

    I just finished doing my 04. Put 08 cams in while I was at it. If you're thinking about doing this I can highly recommend it. Be warned, it is quite tedious getting just the right lash clearance. And you cannot just make all the same length. I set the lash .0015 - .002 and the lengths of the solid adjusters varied from the shortest being 1.934" and the longest being 1.952". Also, the threads are not real fine so a little turn changes the length quite a bit, and also tightening the lock nut will have the length grow about .0005 Makes getting as close to possible to .0015 lash quite the chore. Well worth it though. Dead cold start and.....silence!! So nice not to hear the clatter on cold start not to mention how much smoother the idle is, and the bonus of a quite noticeable top end increase.
    UPDATE! My PCM decided to retire so I lashed the adjusters again, a couple started getting noisy again. When I checked them the .0015" lash grew to over .002, I also noticed on the base of those adjusters the wear marks were different than the rest of them. They showed localized heavy loading vs the consistent pattern on the bottoms of the ones that maintained the proper lash. My theory is the bottom of the bores the adjusters sit in are not machined very smooth, this was confirmed by looking in the bores. I think the constant pounding of the cam pushing the lash adjuster down during valve actuation pushes the lifter down with more force, not being a hyd cushion the bottom of the adjuster is very slightly flattening down the high peaks the bore cutter leaves in the bottom of the bore increasing the depth of the bore and requiring a lengthening of the adjuster to compensate for the increase in bore depth.

I’ve contemplated trying to get more power out of my 4.7 Mitsubishi Duro Cross,, my situation is I need more power than I can get from headers and solid lifters!! I was given a nice RV and it’s just too much for the pickup to pull !!! My thoughts are since I don’t get any kinda mileage from the 4.7, I’ve a mind to just swap out the motor for a 5.7 Hemi and just install the HO components before installation!! I know it sounds good but I’m sure there’s a lot of hindrances the come with that line of thinking!!! But you did a great job,, thanks for the tips!!!

    P.S. word to the wise
    I ordered the timing chain master kit from rockauto and everything was good, but the sensor wheel on the passenger side was incorrect causing cam sensor code P0340 to show up on a scanner. I had to take the front of the engine off twice, because I didn’t notice the difference in that wheel. A 2005 Dakota has a N code and a J code and there’s the HO 4.7 so there was no choice in these two different vehicle codes. Pay attention to the VIN.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When ordering a timing chain set if you're PCM has 3 connectors it is a JTEC and if you have 4 connectors then it is an NGC these are the ways you tell the difference between the 2 Cam gears on the passenger side. Your 05 is definitely a NGC 4 connector PCM.

    Hi Martin, I'm driving a '03 Dakota 4.7 of course. There's an '08 Durango at my pick-a-part. I want to do the modifications you mention on your channel, but my question is: should I take the heads off the pick-a-part vehicle, or just the cam shafts and rockers? Will the whole head be compatible with my older 4.7? Is there any difference between the '03 and '08 heads besides the spark plugs? TIA

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah there is some more differences in the 03 to 08 cylinder heads you would also need the exhaust manifold's, the fuel injectors and I would use the 08 coils and spark plug wires as well
      one other thing that would happen is you're gonna lose compression because the combustion chamber on the 08 is larger than the earlier models.
      The valves are the same size but the intake and exhaust ports are larger on the 08 I'm not sure what the actual end result would be as far as performance, fro. the loss of horsepower.
      You would also need the valve covers those are also different.
      I would just recommend grabbing the Cam shafts.
      Now if that was a good running engine at the salvage yard I would grab the whole thing and put that into your 03 and you would probably only have to do some exhaust modification. And a small wiring changes on the Ignition coils.

    I noticed the min is now .002 and max .004 on the ones I just got. I was going to shoot for .003 but after hearing your comments at the end I'll go for .002 I wanted to add, I have an old Harley ironhead Sportster that uses a similar valve tappet as far as adjustment. They use a ball on both ends so a feeler gauge is out, they are adjusted by how much resistance spinning the pushrod gives. I have found when I get the right lash and then tighten the lock nut it changes oh so slightly the length of the tappet. I am finding this now doing these. On my Sportster I go slightly longer and the tightening of the locknut sneaks it down to the desired length, I found that method works pretty good doing these also. I am in Michigan, not as hot as LV, I used to live in Phoenix, but it is 90 and muggy right now. I am on my third one taking a break feeding the dogs right now.

I've been searching for a set of HO cams, or better still complete HO heads with cams to rebuild for my 2000 SLT Durango 4X4 I'm doing a mild refresh on. 150K on the clock, I've owned it since brand new, so this is preemptive, not because of any issues, other than rusted and broken exhaust manifold bolts and heat shields. Would you be interested is selling a set of HO cams or dare I ask heads? Again I only ask as they seem scarce as Hens teeth here. Having driven my HO 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited with the same gears, I want the extra HO power for my Durango as well. What a difference, feels like a lot more than 30 horsepower, though the Durango is heavier than the 02 GC, but the gears are the same. Was toying with putting 3:92's in the Durango as well with the cams and a tune.

      Hello Phil, All of the Durango I've seen so far all have 355 gears in them it would be nice to find a set of 392 that is the same gear I would like to install in my Dakota.
      The grand Cherokees with the 4.7 as far as I know all came with 373 pretty good gear, even though I may change those out to 392 possibly 411.

    Martin, I know this is an older video. Wondering how you liked the solid “lifters”. They every come loose on you or need adjustment?
    Last winter I ordered, then waited for Melling brand lash adjusters to come in because I believed them to be a good brand. They are now not staying pumped up. Might even have one or to not fully pumping up ever. It’s only been 7k miles. No dirty oil in the crank case, probably every, previous owner was meticulous. Didn’t see caked oil or dirty anything when installing HO cams.
    All the noises went away after replacement, first time I hammered on the truck the tick came back and hasn’t left.
    Not sure I wanna go solid lifters. Any other brands you recommend if they won’t replace these for me(and they prob won’t, it’s been a year even if only 7k miles)?

      unusual to see the lobes scored if the bearing surfaces on the camshaft are scored that is somewhat common depending on frequent oil changes or not.

      The solid lifters have a few advantages a higher RPM potential especially if you're into a lot of horsepower modifications. You'll never have a lifter collapse like you will with hydraulic. No she you're not into having to pull your valve covers off every 20000 mi in readjusting them then I wouldn't recommend them.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  ปีที่แล้ว

      The old lash adjusters are hydraulic. There should be no Clarence at all with them. You need to install your rockers and solid lash adjusters and then check the clearance and make adjustments by removing them.
      It takes hours to get the adjustment correct. I would try to get it down to 002. If you settle at .004, you're going to have a noisy engine.
      When I do the adjustments, I get it all down, too .0015
      Because, as the engine warms up, the gap actually grows between between valve stem and rocker tip.

      @martinbuilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they are no different than the ones from the HO engines.

    Two cams for HO 1. # 53021411ab left side…other # 141.3c over 13299 right side. Is right side cam correct number??? Thank you

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That should be correct. Check out this video th-cam.com/video/UqSQ9QrCFro/w-d-xo.html

      Yes I watched the video before and again right now.
      It’s the numbers on mine that make me wonder if I have the correct cam for the right side ? 141.3C over 13299

    Great video! I bought my Jeep on the cheap cause the 4.7 had been cooked. The lifters were seized but I freed them up with acetone. But since getting her going again I noticed the lifters are noisy so I'm guessing they are worn out. So should I buy replacements solid lifters or factory?

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Zaicos I think I would just go ahead and buy hydraulic replacements. Unless you're going to be doing mods in the future and looking for more horsepower than go with the solids.

    • @jason35177
      @jason35177 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      martinbuilt, ok then. I can't get head around why they are noisy. Its just annoying listening to them. Thanks for your reply. Your jeep sounds sweet by the way.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Zaicos they're not supposed to be noisy. If they are noisy they are either collapsing or you have weak valve springs

      Roman Beck, has new timing chains. Just bought new lifters. I remember the existing lifters were very soft to depress. New ones are much stiffer

    What if we are changing the heads? Same process?

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're replacing the cylinder heads you're going to need to pull the front timing cover and redo the entire timing chain set.

    good night martin do you know why it shoots blue smoke when accelerating the grand cherokke 2001

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Engine too full of oil
      Engine low on oil
      Cylinder head drain back holes are clogged
      Valve stem seals are worn out
      Broken piston oil control ring
      Plugged crankcase ventilation,
      PCV
      Excessive piston ring clearness or scratched cylinder walls.

      Rings when smoking accelerating, valve seals when smoking de-accelerating.

    I found a 2004 HO 4.7L from a Jeep Grand Cherokee at a pick a part....Q: will the entire cylinder heads fit on a 2006 4.7L Jeep Commander?

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it will bolt right on. Does your 06 have a EGR valve on the one cylinder head? If so you'll have to come up with some way of deleting the EGR. Or it may be possible to drill the HO to accept an EGR valve

    can you replace the valve stem seals without taking the cam off? i got some blue smoke after i sit at a redlight then gas it to go. none at start up tho. but i do have some lifter noise at startup. so i was thinking of replacing the lifters and stem seals to see if that would solve the two issues.

      Travis Flint****** Check your coolant level. ( may be leaking into cylinder )
      if so then stop driving it NOW! PULL THE HEADS ( BOTH ) AND FIX IT.
      NOW.

      martinbuilt I also was thinking about trying that, but im not real sure how hard it would be to make everything work with the dual spark plug setup and ecu stuff? Have you found any good reference information anywhere online? And can you measure your timing chain wedge for me so i can make one? I have to pull the right head on my ho wj later today? I was considering making a wedge for the tensioners, but i dont know what the correct dimensions would be.
