My son and I used your video (and one other about removing/installing cylinder heads) extensively to rebuild his Jeep Liberty 3.7 which had a dropped valve seat. Neither of us are mechanics but after watching your videos, we both said "we can do this!". And we did! After everything was put back together, we both held our breath as we turned the key to start it - and it fired right up. For anyone considering doing this job, just watch this video (over and over), follow the steps exactly, and you will be successful. In fact, setting the timing was the easiest and most enjoyable part of the job.

a rocker arm fell off on cylinder 2 , put it back on but still loose. I used the washer trick under the lifter and stayed there. Forgot to adjust the timing belt which makes the engine run rough. I watched this video and turn the balance shaft to match TDC and run like a champ. Thanks a lot for this video. You saved me 1500 on repairs

Hi Martin, Thank you very much for this video and tips and information. Your gentle narration is very professional. My customer's Dakota dropped a seat on the right bank making the valve stick open. Same thing on the left bank but unfortunately the number one piston and valve fought it out with the broken up seat chunks to mutually assured destruction. New heads, one piston, and a timing set are now installed thanks to your help. Nothing like a mentor to come alongside.
I assume that you have done a number of these 4.7l's then? Ever have one jump time at initial crank? I just did one, reused tensioners, everything looked good. This isn't the first one I've done either. Hit the key to start it and it instantly jumped time on both heads. Even after retimiing it, I have zero compression on the passenger side and 60 psi on the drivers side. I even primed the oil system the second time, which was too late. Is priming these needed?
My friend I just saw this video because I bought a 07 Liberty 3.7 with weak valves, it runs but missing and with this video I am going to do it myself. THANKS A LOT FOR SHARING IT WITH US. GOD BLESS YOU.
You're very welcome. With the 3.7, there is the additional balance shaft that needs to be timed with the idle sprocket. Other than that, the process is exactly the same as the 4.7

Thanks for taking the time not going so fast. Just got to put valve covers on, radiator in, and a few other things. Hopefully she purrs like yours when I finally turn the key. 👍

@@saulzavala9806 Did you soak the lash adjusters in motor oil for a day or so? This will work out the air that is trapped in the lash adjusters. And how is the oil pressure? It would be a good idea to run 3/4 quart of Marvel's Mystery oil with the next oil change. I use this in both my 4.7 engines.
Your video has been more helpful than anything that I have looked at to build my confidence to tear into my 2005 4.7 ram 1500 that has a sloppy loose passenger side timing chain that I found while changing lifters that I thought were causing all of the racket in there.
Thanks for this. Primary tensioner broke for me too in the same manner. Got one next day for $28 bucks. I'm sure this is a common event. Probably should replace it anyway due to the brittle nature of the plastic. Good video.
Incredible video man. Got a 2017 trailhawk that just started a rattle yesterday that I suspect is a timing chain issue. After watching this video and the other showing how to remove the cover, I'm less apprehensive tackling this myself. Your video could save me a ton of money. Hi, Just wanted to say thank you for a couple of your videos. This one on replacing the timing chains and sprockets and the one on installing solid lifters. I had to tear the heads off my WK grand cherokee to replace some bent valves so I decided to change all the valves, the valve springs, seals and put solid lifters in. I also replaced the timing chain and sprockets along with the water pump and belt tensioner and new fuel injector connectors. Little bit of work but it runs great now. Thanks again.
No, after I installed HO cams the bolt on the drivers side cam came slightly loose, guess I should’ve put locktite on ie, and the timing went off just slightly and caused the 4 intake valves on the drivers side head to hit pistons and bend. The pistons were fine but not the valves. Alls good now. Painful lesson learned though.
@@jerrymcmanus9366 sorry to hear that, I would be surprised if the bolt actually came loose, what have seen is that you may have thought the cam gear was seated to the cam but in actuality, it is not, and then the cam gear slips and you end up with bent valves and the appears to have come to loose.

I watched your video until I had it memorized because it was the most detailed and it went absolutely flawless. My only issue was the LH cam sprocket/gear from Cloyes was not marked "R - V8 - L" (only had "L") and it was missing the holes for the spanner tool. I wanted matching gears but I needed the motor fixed ASAP. So using the old gear as a template I drill holes in the new one so I had a place to attach the spanner tool to torque the cam shaft gear bolts. Hell of a way to cut corners by not drilling two holes and deleting three stamp impressions. Great info, thanks for your hard work putting this video out there. Updated 12/7/2022 -- I replaced timing chains and lifters hoping it would get rid of the famous 4.7 tick and it did for about 4 days but then came back - strange why 4 days then returned ? Updated 12/12/2022 -- Had an oil leak on passenger side valve cover . Didn't have new gasket fully seated at rear corner-- it rolled over and some how got cut. Took about a week for the oil to find the exhaust manifold. Replaced with new one and no leaks. Reply Reply

Thanks Martin! Helped a ton, along with your balancer installation video! Just did head gaskets, timing, and the whole works. Had to replace the heads, they were cracked between every cylinder. Thanks for making a quality video!
Usually I work with a Honda 1.7 old engine with one timing change you helped me a lot with my Jeep I miss the timing and chain I mean did Mark on the chain for the left side but other marks are good the engine rotates by hand with no problem don't think I'm good thank you for your help

I put a 4.7 from a 03 Durango into a 01 dakota and because of the timing difference between the two it wouldn't run so I sent it out to multiple mechanics to try to get it running and they all failed so the project got pushed aside now after doing research and ordering new parts its time to put new timing gears and chains and stuff on but ive never done the job before so thanks for making this awesome how to boosts my confidence alot.
@@matty2helpfull yes you can use the old one. you will need to pull the engine and disassemble the lower half of the engine to lift the crank out far enough to change it out. you may be better off finding an engine that had the NGC ECM and sell that engine.
@@martinbuilt I need to pull the engine again anyway to pull change the wire harness again so I will probably just continue with this one but I'll keep that in mind thank you for all your useful info 😊
marten Ive worked on cars for 55 years.. Ive noticed that all these cars have plastic backed timing tensioners,,, Like you thoughts on removing the plastic and building back with brass and machining to specs. after watching you , you know what your doing.. thats rare these days. keep up the good work,,

Hey @MrGoliat6288 I have the same truck and it just started having a knocking sound that seems loudest from underneath toward the back. But I could be mistaken. But the sound doesn’t go away once warmed up. And is pretty loud. Just curious if you had the same symptoms with truck before doing the timing job. Through research, it seems to me that if it were the lifters starting to go bad the sound goes away after a bit. Thanks for your time. Also Martin you’re the best. Very helpful.
Nice video Martin. Nice clear shots on the video. I had a diagnosis of coolant in my oil in my 08 3.7. So I'm considering pulling off the head gaskets. While I have all that off I gathered I might as well go the extra step and do the timing chain as well so this was very helpful. Not to mention, I just remembered since I'm doing all that I might as well throw in a new set of lifters.;) thanks!
Hi Martin! Great video and thanks for doing that. There's just one more thing to watch out for on the "3.7" however. Behind the double gear assembly , there is a counter balance gear that must be properly lined up as the new gear and chain set is being pushed on.
I almost just stuck stuff together because it wasn't mentioned and I figured it wasn't important. IT IS. Prior to putting the chains on, look at the very back angled teeth for a dot. Use a grease pen to mark the tops of those 2 teeth since you won't be able to see it once the chains are on. Then when installing, put the dot on the counter balance gear in those teeth so when pushed in place, the dots will be lined up.
@@Ronnie-zn9sx are you sure you got them all? Did you remove the belt tensioner, there is a bolt hiding behind that, and the large bolt at the very top of the cover 17mm deep socket?
@@martinbuilt i found the infamous missing bolt, just where you said it was. I had to find it before i went to bed or i wouldn't sleep. Keep you updated.
I found out I'm also missing the guide pins. I Uninstalled first cause my buddy who was helping me broke a guide pin and some pieces fell at the bottom. Also I made my chain fall off from its spot. But yeah I'm glad I saw this video.

Great video!! So the 08 camshafts have more lift and duration. I have 147,000 on my 4.7 and she runs like a champ. I take good care of her. Changing fluids when called for. 04 Dakota i have. Thanks again!

Nice video Martin you're the man! If you did go ahead and remove the hydraulic lash adjusters and rocker arms, you would be able to spin the cam sprocket by hand and not have to mark up your cams to install the chains. Really made my life easier just taking them out. Take care and thanks for the video !
Great job martin! Im a bit concern about your oil pan containing debries tho. My 04 jeep came from a "dealer" and it's been a guessing game locating parts that where taking off and never went back in the car. Thanks to you i managed to put some of them back. Cheers man!

Sorry I wasn't there for you then. Yes this is something that you definitely don't want to mess up. Since this is an interference engine and valve damage can certainly happen if you get the timing wrong. Thank you for watching.

Also..the passenger side has full compression and the driver side doesn't have full compression. The second spark plug on the driver side is where my mechanic is having the problem due to the compression test that he did earlier today as of Thursday. I hope this extra helps out so I can have my truck back Friday. He's had it for 2 weeks now. Thank you again

The part may not fit at all in which case i still need payed for my labor time, and if put back together will be another separate labor charge when the new part comes. 3.your part may not work properly or at all directly out of the gate in which case i will not be held liable, i will double and triple check to ensure proper installation but beyond that will need payed a separate labor charge if it jeeds replaced again, or a separate diagnsotic fee, should a new symptom arise where that same new part ends up being deemed the cause). OR i will not even accept the job at all.....pretty much anything Bavarian, Scandinavian or german/Eurotrash....im not even gonna waste my own or your time and/or money trying to fix ANY problem with amazon parts 😆 don't buy those junk rides if u can't pay to play

I worked for Dodge for a number of years and that was an excellent video on how to do this. Very strait forward and explained very well.

Thank you, That could be most likely caused by a hydraulic self adjuster failure or maybe worn out guides

@@jerrymcmanus9366 sorry to hear that, I would be surprised if the bolt actually came loose, what have seen is that you may have thought the cam gear was seated to the cam but in actuality, it is not, and then the cam gear slips and you end up with bent valves and the appears to have come to loose.
@@martinbuilt thats very possible. The pin or dowel was damaged too. I’d include de a pic but looks like TH-cam doesn’t allow for that in this message area.

I watched your video until I had it memorized because it was the most detailed and it went absolutely flawless. My only issue was the LH cam sprocket/gear from Cloyes was not marked "R - V8 - L" (only had "L") and it was missing the holes for the spanner tool. I wanted matching gears but I needed the motor fixed ASAP. So using the old gear as a template I drill holes in the new one so I had a place to attach the spanner tool to torque the cam shaft gear bolts. Hell of a way to cut corners by not drilling two holes and deleting three stamp impressions. Great info, thanks for your hard work putting this video out there.
Updated 12/7/2022 -- I replaced timing chains and lifters hoping it would get rid of the famous 4.7 tick and it did for about 4 days but then came back - strange why 4 days then returned ?
Updated 12/12/2022 -- Had an oil leak on passenger side valve cover . Didn't have new gasket fully seated at rear corner-- it rolled over and some how got cut. Took about a week for the oil to find the exhaust manifold. Replaced with new one and no leaks.

Usually I work with a Honda 1.7 old engine with one timing change you helped me a lot with my Jeep I miss the timing and chain I mean did Mark on the chain for the left side but other marks are good the engine rotates by hand with no problem don't think I'm good thank you for your help

I put a 4.7 from a 03 Durango into a 01 dakota and because of the timing difference between the two it wouldn't run so I sent it out to multiple mechanics to try to get it running and they all failed so the project got pushed aside now after doing research and ordering new parts its time to put new timing gears and chains and stuff on but ive never done the job before so thanks for making this awesome how to boosts my confidence alot.

@@martinbuilt that should be a part that doesn't get worn out right? Can I just swap from the old motor to the new? Or should I look for a new one
@@matty2helpfull yes you can use the old one. you will need to pull the engine and disassemble the lower half of the engine to lift the crank out far enough to change it out. you may be better off finding an engine that had the NGC ECM and sell that engine.
@@martinbuilt I need to pull the engine again anyway to pull change the wire harness again so I will probably just continue with this one but I'll keep that in mind thank you for all your useful info 😊

Ive noticed that all these cars have plastic backed timing tensioners,,, Like you thoughts on removing the plastic and building back with brass and machining to specs. after watching you , you know what your doing.. thats rare these days. keep up the good work,,

Hey @MrGoliat6288 I have the same truck and it just started having a knocking sound that seems loudest from underneath toward the back. But I could be mistaken. But the sound doesn’t go away once warmed up. And is pretty loud.
Just curious if you had the same symptoms with truck before doing the timing job. Through research, it seems to me that if it were the lifters starting to go bad the sound goes away after a bit. Thanks for your time.

Nice video Martin. Nice clear shots on the video. I had a diagnosis of coolant in my oil in my 08 3.7. So I'm considering pulling off the head gaskets. While I have all that off I gathered I might as well go the extra step and do the timing chain as well so this was very helpful. Not to mention, I just remembered since I'm doing all that I might as well throw in a new set of lifters.;) thanks!

Hi Martin! Great video and thanks for doing that. There's just one more thing to watch out for on the "3.7" however. Behind the double gear assembly , there is a counter balance gear that must be properly lined up as the new gear and chain set is being pushed on.

Yes and now here I am stuck unsure how to time that small gear..
I almost just stuck stuff together because it wasn't mentioned and I figured it wasn't important. IT IS. Prior to putting the chains on, look at the very back angled teeth for a dot. Use a grease pen to mark the tops of those 2 teeth since you won't be able to see it once the chains are on. Then when installing, put the dot on the counter balance gear in those teeth so when pushed in place, the dots will be lined up.
I have a 2.7, this video was the best at explaining the essentials of timing. It is a good guide, I hope I can find one this good for my engine.

Any ideas on why the cover will not come off?. All bolts and pulleys removed .
@@Ronnie-zn9sx are you sure you got them all? Did you remove the belt tensioner, there is a bolt hiding behind that, and the large bolt at the very top of the cover 17mm deep socket?

I found out I'm also missing the guide pins. I Uninstalled first cause my buddy who was helping me broke a guide pin and some pieces fell at the bottom. Also I made my chain fall off from its spot. But yeah I'm glad I saw this video.

@@martinbuilt I've been looking for head bolt torque specs. I have seen 4 different videos and all 4 tell different specs.
Nice video Martin you're the man! If you did go ahead and remove the hydraulic lash adjusters and rocker arms, you would be able to spin the cam sprocket by hand and not have to mark up your cams to install the chains. Really made my life easier just taking them out. Take care and thanks for the video !

if you don't mind marring up the cam shaft, you can use pliers instead of the cam gear tool to get the cam bolts off.

Also..the passenger side has full compression and the driver side doesn't have full compression. The second spark plug on the driver side is where my mechanic is having the problem due to the compression test that he did earlier today as of Thursday. I hope this extra helps out so I can have my truck back Friday. He's had it for 2 weeks now. Thank you again

THANK YOOUUUU for mentioning to DIYers about AMAZON PARTS!!! I have to explain this to customers who want to supply their own parts on a regular basis. Unfortunately, sometimes they've already bought their own stuff (so ya really wonder where the diagnosis came from too 😉 lol). Depending on the vehicle and what kind of part it is, I end up either giving them the whole disclaimer first (1.it may not fit correctly, if it doesn't and I have to alter IT, anything else, fabricate something or spend extra time in any capacity to make it fit, you will be charged for that extra time 2. The part may not fit at all in which case i still need payed for my labor time, and if put back together will be another separate labor charge when the new part comes. 3.your part may not work properly or at all directly out of the gate in which case i will not be held liable, i will double and triple check to ensure proper installation but beyond that will need payed a separate labor charge if it jeeds replaced again, or a separate diagnsotic fee, should a new symptom arise where that same new part ends up being deemed the cause).
OR i will not even accept the job at all.....pretty much anything Bavarian, Scandinavian or german/Eurotrash....im not even gonna waste my own or your time and/or money trying to fix ANY problem with amazon parts 😆 don't buy those junk rides if u can't pay to play
