    Wow Taryl, I have never seen power equipment repair presented with such enthusiasm! Most lawn equipment shops will do anything they can to sell you a brand new carburetor, usually running in the $30-40 range. They will invariably either pull the "it's more cost-effective" approach, or tell you "rebuild kits aren't guaranteed", when 99% of the time the problem can be solved by purchasing and installing a rebuild kit for $8. Usually it's the soft components that degrade: gaskets, flanges and seals, mainly from running fuel containing high concentrations of aromatics (ie benzene, toluene, xylene, etc) through the carburetor. Using Stihl's pre-mixed fuel will help prolong the life of these soft components, and decrease deposits and wear on your engine's moving components, but the difference in wear and deposits between pump fuel and the pre-mix fuel on its own does not justify the extra cost of the pre-mix. In my opinion, what you're paying for with MotoMix is the lack of aromatics, which cause leukemia, which are found in plentiful supply in ordinary pump gas.

    • @alexstromberg7696
      @alexstromberg7696 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah and you have to pay for the labour of installing the kit. Which would end up more expensive than just installing a new carb in 15 sec.

  • @hthomure

    Just used your video to repair the exact problem you demonstrated. The chainsaw kept bogging down when I throttled it up. Replaced the diaphragms and gaskets along with the video and.....it wouldn't start. Crap. After much cussing, I noticed the fuel filter had gotten moved in such a way that it was not getting any fuel through it. Gave it a flick and she fired right up. Revved it up for all it was worth and it never crapped out once. Thanks for the help.

    Your instruction on how to work on the carbatrator was absolutely extremely well done. I was able to fix the bogging problem, thanks to this video. The screen was clogged up. I could put a flashlight behind it and it was about 80% stopped up. So I put it in a jar of lacquer thinner overnight, shook it up, and it unstopped the little holes in the screen....put it back together, (without the need for a rebuild kit), and it runs fine. (Stihl MS250 saw). KUDOS to you for making such an outstanding video for us homeowners out here.

    Thank you guys for posting these videos. I watch them because there's a lot to learn and I get more comfortable working on our lawn mower, chain saws, weed eater while sitting on a bench outside the tool shed. I know you can't do a video on everything. You probably have a lot of requests for advice. My older neighbor has a Cub Cadet lawn tractor, with a mower deck and push blade attachment. It has a Kohler motor with an NK "carbitrator". This carbitrator has a tiny fuel pump built inside the carbitrator housing. That's a first for me. I was thinking about doing a conversion carbitrator with an external fuel pump, but it's probably best just to clean out the carbitrator as it stands. I'd like to help him get his tractor up and running before winter snow sets in. I understand you can't answer all your requests. Just wanted overall to thank you guys for these great videos and tons of useful information. Thanks for dinner Taryl!!!!!!

    Taryl.....I would be tempted to just replace the whole “carbatrator”. I see the C1Q S57A for under $20 from many parts suppliers. ???? I also have a small funnel with a micron filter inside to fill my small engines that don’t have fuel filters built on.
    Nice videos, someone should give you a break and do a reality show. Very few people attempt major automotive repairs or body work which has may TV shows. We are more likely to do our own work on small engines, hence the reason for Taryl Fixes All on the tube!

    @16:33 Don't need a gasket between the air cleaner and the carb because only air is being drawn through the air cleaner anyway, and any air leaking in through where a gasket would be is going through a narrow gap which is as good as a cleaner.

      True story: my neighbor had me working on his old school Stihl about a year ago. He tried to do the repair himself before he brought it to me. He said he was searching youtube and found some goofy guy with crazy teeth. He thought it was just a goof channel and didnt watch the whole video. I laffed and told him that Taryl was a mechanical genius. He looked at me like I was stupid. I just said to him,"If you dont get the joke,you ARE the joke". Back to reality tho.Taryls videos speak a language that only we that dabble or do this alot understand. We know enough to 'fill in the blanks' on what may be overlooked or edited. Therefore it all makes sense to us and we comment on the comedy and skits. The bulk of the comments are on the personalities in the skits. Look for yourself and see how many questions are actual how to questions and how many responses that person gets. Sorry, this is a "you get it or you dont" channel. A Black Chevy drives down the road with a big "3" on the doors. You get it or you dont! Just my opinion.

    Hi everyone- Love Taryl's videos. but have a tricky old weed wacker(US) (whipper sniiper in aust) problem
    *****DIFFICULT- engine bog down problem if anyone wants to try to diagnose. Stihl FS 51 AL
    Same as Taryl's bog down when open throttle and only sort of idles so i suspected carb or fuel starvation
    So a si donr before, i open carb and all parts looked ok but i cleaned and replaced all the diaphragms ect and it run for 10 mins idle and full power and then starved off. I also put a brand new carb on just to eliminate the carb and same problem.
    I then suspected the pulse hole leakage or engine leaking at oil seal or gaskets causing air to get in maybe when warmed up and leaning the mixture. Put vac of 9 psi and it held steady after blocking off inlet and exhaust so the engine isnt leaking. i tried compression next and got 120psi ? is that enough to make pulse hole work ?
    i attached a vac gauge to the little pulse hole and pulled rope and got about 2 psi vac and pressure on the gauge so dont know if thats enough?
    I notice when i try to start , there is no fuel being drawn through the fuel line to the carb so how can it even idle? Also i bypassed the filter to make sure fuel was available from the tank above the carb. This weed machine dosent have a prime bulb so does the 2 little pump flaps have to have fuel in the carb to start pumping? It worked in past as it is so i guess it will pump until fuel gets to carb but i dont see any going down the line so PULSE line issue not making the pump pump anymore?
    I used new gaskets and made sure the little gasket hole lined up ect to reach the carb and complete the air pulse circuit.
    I am at a loss on this machine......

  • @lineman-zh3ft
    @lineman-zh3ft 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love Taryl, but if you are going to rebuild a carb, you should get the complete kit not just the gasket and diaphragm kit. Use an ultrasonic cleaner to make sure all passages are clean. Always replace the needle. If the welch plug sealant has come off, you can reseal with clear nail polish. But that doesn't always work.... Carbs need to be cleaned properly. They should also be pressure checked after a rebuild! While the majority of the rebuilds work out, sometimes they don't...The reason a lot of carbs on cheaper units get replaced is a time/ money reason. The carb for that saw can be purchased for $25 locally for me. The rebuild kit costs me $17. It's not worth my time to rebuild it at that price, especially when I have a lot of units to fix. Just my 2 cents.

    On the metering side, the gasket always goes on first. Pump side is just the opposite. The check valve flaps have to seal against the carb body. Nice “Real Monsters!” soundbite!

    Great video, entertaining and informative.
    Now I’ll go get the carb information and buy a kit.

    I had trouble with a shit carby where the main jets check valve was Loctited into the carbs body, the fuel ate the Loctite away,I had to buy another carby because the main check valve was a poor fit inside the carby.
    That Mason jar trick where the carby is dunked into water & slight air pressure is applied to the carby inlet via a tube revealed the air leak.
    The fuel pump diaphragms do stretch so can cause fuel delivery problems,as far as blowing it out with air,I wouldn't because I've buggered a check valve up by blowing the carb out with compressed air.

    Taryl, I have a question about a craftsman 17hp IC platinum Intek, if it's okay to run it by you. Engine started fine and I backed up, then after shutting it off and restarting, it cranked maybe twice, popped lightly (or pooped) and was dead, wouldn't crank and solenoid wouldn't even click. Checked the battery, shorted the solenoid, no change. Replaced ignition switch and solenoid no change in symptoms. Jumper cabled the seat interlock switch, no change. Blades are disengaged, foot on brake when needed. Possible starter? Thank you...
