Hi guys I just wanted to Introduce to you my other Channel "Kirkman's Academy" - which i'm just getting started. It's a go-to channel for simple explanations for hard to grasp subjects such as physics, maths and chemistry etc. Here is the link: www.youtube.com/@kirkmansacademy/videos . Thank you so much for looking, and if these topics interest you then I hope to see you the there. Many thanks indeed. Craig 😊👍
That was absolutely brilliant. I've learnt more about how carburettors work in the last 15 minutes than I have in my previous 65 years! You sir, are exceptional at explaining a mystical subject in a very easy to understand manner. Thank you so much for your efforts. Well done.
Well Done . I was an Aircraft Technician Back in the 60s/70s/80s andwas well trained at Halton the best training a guy could get . You reminded me of the great instructors we had . An accurate and well presented explanation ..... Well Done !!!!!
Absolutely top notch - very much appreciate the level of detail, drawings, close camera work, even audio overdubbing. Agree with another poster - perhaps the best instructional video I've seen!
This is perhaps the single best educational video on TH-cam. Told with skill, terrific videography, and good sense, I would rate this as one of the all time best.
The best and most thorough explanation I've seen on you tube . Very well done sir, you have made this very clear and easy to understand. Hats off to you!
Thank you for the excelent detailed explanation. I thought I knew carburetors from my two and four stroke motorcycle experience, but chainsaws were stumping me. Thanks again!
That's an absolutely exceptional video! I've been trying to learn about small engines and watching lots of videos of stripping, cleaning and tweaking carburetors, but watching this has just been a total lightbulb moment! Now that I understand the fuel flows and how it works, suddenly all the other videos and processes make sense and I can see how it all comes together! Thanks so much for sharing!
Sir, I can't thank you enough for producing a great video. So clear and informative. I've fooled with these Stihl carbs for years and really had no idea how they worked. Always hoping that after cleaning and reassembly the problem would just go away. Usually just wishful thinking. My confidence level is much greater now. Thank you again and keep up the great work!
The best and simplest explanation of the workings of these little demons I have ever seen, so well done mate. In 14 minutes you have provided all the info that would have taken a yank about 3 hours to get through, so Thank you for keeping it simple!
I was reading Paul Dempsey's book on small engine repair, and quite frankly he lost me on the carb part. I watched your video and everything clicked. I will make sure to mention you in my Goodreads review, and how you're the perfect companion for the book.
Having rebuilt and cleaned many carburetors, including the very Zuma you used to demonstrate, I have loosely known these principles. This video has taken my understanding to a whole new level. Such a well done piece! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video and for the outstanding teaching technique you used to explain things. Bravo!
Thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this video. I recently ordered a service kit for my old Stihl chainsaw, and rather than being a little apprehensive towards stripping down the carburetor, instead I was fascinated and confident, it all makes sense now. What a clever design. Thanks again and all the best. Tony
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Having been left a Sthil brushcutter, and no knowledge of how the engine works, this was great. Fuel had been left in the tank unused fit 3 years! I now have the knowledge and understanding, on how and why to clean it! Thank you!!!
Best instruction on membrane carbs I've ever seen and heard ! One should see and hear it at once - then understanding of the problem will be complete. Super lecturer and instructor YOU ARE, Sir !
After taking my saw carbs apart several hundred times over the course of 20 years use, I never actually new how they worked ......... Until now. Thanks. ..
Ive got to say don`t use carburettor talk at a bar to pick up a date lol, You are the man, there is nothing on you tube that gives a total detail on these two stroke carburettors, this is really helpful, If we understand the workings of something ,it makes it easier to figure out the problems, knowledge is power/power to machinery lol I take my hat off to you for sharing what you know.
You’re grasp of this material is as impressive as your presentation. I am sure you have probably heard it before but if you haven’t, you might consider a quick caveat indicating that the tick-over condition as it relates to a carburetor is understood in other parts of the globe to mean the “idle condition”. Your videos have helped me immeasurably troubleshoot and repair numerous small engines. Please continue to post these as you find new material.
Wow! What a great video, camera in focus, actually looking at the object of interest and explained by someone who actually understands how something works! What a difference from the usual half-arsed TH-cam drivel! Cheers, mate!
I never wanted to really go this far "into the weeds" but it's great now having the background to understand how the tiniest of air leak can prevent something from running. Great video series!!!
Great Video! My saw would only run with the choke on, I took it apart and cleaned all of the orffices with carb cleaner, and air now it runs like new! Thank you very much!
When I want to make peace with a 2 stroke engine I watch your videos/tutorials. Not only are they brilliant, they also have a way of instilling confidence and bringing me a sense of calm.. I've worked a few miracles as a result of your superb work. Thank you so much.
This was truly an OUTSTANDING explanation of how these small 2 stroke carburetor work. Very helpful in understanding how to troubleshoot and clean it when necessary. Many thanks.
I changed my Stihl 025 carburetor's diaphragms and gaskets a week ago and it was quite interesting to see afterwards, how that thing is supposed to work. :-) I don't speak English as my native language and I want to say that your nice and clear English was a pleasure to follow! That is not always the case here in tube. Thank you, well done sir!
This the best and most sensibly explanation of how a two stroke carburetor fuel flows .Every explanation to the point...not boring or confusing .Thank you so much and Jehovah's blessing
Outstanding. Clearest, most elaborate video I have ever seen. I will return to it many times surely. Your novel use of cut aways and sectioning makes all of the difference. THANKS so much.
This is ABSOLUTELY.... POSITIVELY.... THE BEST Video I have ever watched. Thank you for posting this! I've been cleaning these little carbs for awhile, but I've always wanted a clear explanation for how they operate in detail.
This came up as a recommend video so I click on it not expecting to watch it through. But I have to compliment you on a job very well done. The video is very informative & the explanation using the diagrams made an excellent presentation.
Well done! I would appreciate a follow up video explaining problems that arise with these carburetors and how what you have describes here is impacted by these problems. Symptom and cause type of thing. Thanks!
Fear of the unknown is what this is about. After nearly 40yrs in the tree game I'm finally learning something new. I've recently been doing up some old saws as spares and it's great to have someone who KNOWS what they're talking about explain things. The best way to learn. Thank you for your time and your knowledge. I find that as I get older I enjoy passing on my knowledge to others more than the actual work. Well done Sir.
Wonderful! Most instructive and professional video I've ever found on youtube! Excellent camera work, graphics, and narration. I will be looking for more from this gentleman, even on topics I don't need help on!
What a brilliant tutorial. I was battling for ages trying to prime this carb after a rebuild and would never have come right without understanding the operation. I pushed that bulb till my thumb was numb - you need the vacuum of the engine to assist with initial filling of the chambers after which it all springs to life.
I will echo the words of Steve Wayne and Cinninnimon Skoda. In a world where seemingly nothing is made clear, a video like yours is a breath of fresh air. I'm in the early stages of learning about carburetors and I greatly appreciate you sharing your immense knowledge base.
Thank you for a comprehensive explanation of the diaphram carburetor. Probably the best explanation I have seen and well worth the time you spent to make it.
The explanation on the fuel pump side of the carburator, with the diaphragm, has helped me understand which is the correct way to attach the fuel lines on my chainsaw (the fuel filter hose and return hose). Thank you.
one of the most informative 14minutes and 42 seconds of my life. Just trying to work out now why I seem to get fuel into strimmer engine but not starting despite a spark. Plug coming out quite wet. Have another strimmer which starts and seems to throw out a mist through plug hole. This one doesn't so I assume I may be getting too much fuel in for the spark to cope with. off to watch lean and rich mix vid now. Thank you for your expertise and posting vid
sorry, but maybe you know, how exactly works the Zama C1Q carburettor (e.g. from Stihl FS 310) with an inner pump piston/plunger, which is pushed with a throttle valve's shaft?.. or namely why it doesn't work on high rpm? how to remove a "leakage" through this piston? thanks!
excellent informative video thank you, also worth having a look at the technical pages on the Zama website explaining how these carburettors work . Which are easier to understand after watching this video. The super imposed diagrams really help to explain it . There are now more four stroke chainsaws and strimmers getting about any chance of another video to explain how they work ?
Your channel is one of the most comprehensive I have found on these repair videos. They have helped me a whole lot. Thank you for taking the time to make them and share.
Hello Craig. I think so many people liked the info & video because there is no one out there that teaches this info. I've gone to small engine schools and fixed small engines for many years and nobody teaches specifics on how zama and walbro carbs work- with so many out there for so many years they should have many years ago. It was very interetsing to learn this information and I thank you for that. I've been cleaning & rebuilding them for a long time w/out always knowing how they work 100% exactly-mainly what hole does what and when-the path the fuel takes, etc. Problem is ...in todays world...the holes are so small they dont always clean out... the gas is so lousy (especially if it sat inside there and got old w/ethanol), that they are not worth the time to fix or a great way to test those little valves inside them. If I had to put a number on success's it would 40%. They've also gotten so cheap to replace that its just best to toss them now...especially if your charging 60 to 80 bucks an hr. It was fun to do in the old days but not worth it today if your a pro. Still enjoyed it. Maybe the next video could show the parts to look for that go bad and what they look like...why they go bad and the symptom it causes-working backwards from the symptom. That would be the whole story no one ever discusses-symptom, cause, where to look, how to fix....but then thats why we bring/pay it to the mechanic..right? Keep up the good work Craig. My names is Craig too! Cheers!
This is my first ever entry, but I felt compelled to say how fabulous this is - crystal clear, with much appreciated repetition for the relative novice, Thanks so much!
Brilliant. Truly knowleable people can take what seems to be complicated and explain it in a way simple enough for anyone to understand. You just did that.
Magnificent. I'm troubleshooting a new husq 3120xp that floods and won't turn over. I've checked the easy stuff and now I'll investigate the carb to see if it has dry diaphragms. Videos like this are perfect for someone new to 2 stroke engines, like me. Thank you!
Thanks so much. It is really nice to be able to put this little thing back together and make sense of how it works. I am currently trying to fix my Stihl 240 for the hundredth time and still not working and all the gaskets are correct so I will check again for that speck of dirt that is surely there somewhere. Thanks again. Fantastic job.
I have worked on 2 cycles carbs for years ( self taught ) and I have read and heard many things on 2 cycle carbs. I do understand the flow of gas through two cycle carbs. I must say I've read some good ones, but as far as video this is clearly the absolute best I've heard and that's coming from someone who will know if what you're saying is incorrect. Very good job!
By far the best explanation I've seen! Thank you. I'm just getting into maintaining our collection of saws and I've cleaned and changed out gaskets and needles on a couple of carbs, and now I feel like I know what I'm looking at properly.
A very well done explanation of Stihl's carburetor! I never appreciated what an elegant devise this is - simplicity of operation through complex design.
Without a doubt, this is the best explanation of how these carbs work. Thank you very much! I fly R/C gas powered models and two of them use a Walbro carb and one uses a Chinese knockoff. The Walbros are great. The cheaper ones not as much. It is amazing how poorly they work when they have the slightest amount of contamination. Cheers!
WOW! What a great video! You deserve a trophy for this! Something they touch on in the ZAMA videos on rebuilding carbs is the importance of not sticking wire, pins etc into the little round brass plugs with a hole in the center. They explain that these are check valves, and probing them or blowing compressed air or carb spray into them will destroy them! That renders the carb scrap, because they are not a repairable item! Again, excellent video!
This was a fantastic video, great explanation. I've been rebuilding and tuning 2 stroke carbs for years, but I never understood how it all worked until this video.
Thank you so much, for the great explanation. That little spring has a lot riding on it for the carb. to work properly. I now know the diff. between 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines! You sir are a natural teacher, thanks again.
This has to be the absolute best explained video on how they work. You are a top man sir...extremely helpful in sorting out my starting problem..thank you so much...
I have this carb on my blower. The fuel pump diaphragm is split. I’m waiting for the rebuild kit to be delivered. It all makes sense now after watching your video. Thanks very much 👍
Throwing my chip in the best explanation pot. Thanks so much for breaking this down, now I've got to take another look at my chainsaws carburetor and get her fired up again. Take care my friend, see you on the next one

The Walbros are great. The cheaper ones not as much. It is amazing how poorly they work when they have the slightest amount of contamination. Cheers!
The way you manage to go into such detail, but in a way most people can understand is brilliant! Thank you.
Couldn't find any useful info on these carbs till I found this, this covers exactly what I needed to know, thanks, and nicely done.
So nice to understand instead of everyone tell u basically clean and replace.A lot utubers don’t even tell you fuel in or out just confusing.
This was a fantastic video, great explanation. I've been rebuilding and tuning 2 stroke carbs for years, but I never understood how it all worked until this video.
Absolutely fantastic explanation of how this carburetor works. Excellent camera work as well.
Thank you so much, for the great explanation. That little spring has a lot riding on it for the carb. to work properly. I now know the diff. between 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines! You sir are a natural teacher, thanks again.
I wish I could buy you a beer! I've said it before, No one explains carbs better than you do. Hands down the best on the internet. Thanks and Cheers!
By far the very best video about the topic ! Extra bonus for the clear drawings. These are no more magic to me. Thank you sir.
This has to be the absolute best explained video on how they work. You are a top man sir...extremely helpful in sorting out my starting problem..thank you so much...
I just told my wife that this was the best instructional video I've seen on adjusting a carburetor.
That's the best, clearest explanation of how my chainsaw carb works that I have seen. Thank you very much for taking the time. I have learned a lot.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Craig 👍👍👍
