- Dark Horse continues their new line of deluxe hardcover manga with the release of Hellsing: The Deluxe Edition Vol. 1. Join me as I take a look at this volume and attempt to answer the questions of whether it is worthwhile to upgrade from the old paperback editions, and also if you've never read the series before if this edition is worth your attention.

Gantz does have an omnibus in larger format I believe, just nothing close to the treatment that these beauties are getting. The Berserk Deluxe volumes are some of my favourite books that I own, period.
I think Trigun or Gantz would be good for the next batch. Like you said, they had recent omnis but I think most people would prefer their deluxe edition counterparts

I doubt Gantz will get any, anytime soon. Considering the omnibuses are still being released. Not even half way in the series yet (the omnibus stopped at vol. 15) so it will take possibly another 5 yrs atleast for it to be done. DH gives no fucks about Gantz so it will be very unlikely it will get the hardcover treatment although I do agree and hope it would.

I would buy a Gantz Delux version without a second thought. However, I don't see that happening any time soon and if it does its going to take for freaking ever to get all of them. Dark Horse started releasing the Omnibus version in 2018, 3 years ago. 3 whole years (gonna be 3 years in August) and they have released 7 only Volumes, which covers only from Volume 1 to 21, basically half the series. At the current snail pace rate they are going it will take another 3-4 years to get the whole series just in Omnibus format.
I'm praying that Trigun gets a deluxe edition. I'd take it over everything else because all the omnis and single volumes are expense as heck and out of print now. Plus, the chaotic art seriously deserves to be seen on giant pages.
This was an excellent review. My copy arrived a few weeks ago and I am really pleased with it. The art really pops in the larger format.
It may not seem deep upon first read or watch, but "Hellsing" is incredibly character-driven, and nuanced in its philosophy on the human condition, as well as its relationships. This had a lot of great information on the specs of these books, but in terms of the content, sells it short.
indeed! it is basically a war themed epic story, it even uses epic tools like deus ex machina and enumeratio. there is so much mise-en-abyme in it, smart cultural references so it is definietly a masterpiece. also Hirano Kohta must know really well theological nuances as well

Great vid brother I would say all manga would benefit from the increase deluxe size. I say let's take it up a notch and add color and a couple of more inches to omni size.
I don’t know that they’d be able to go larger than this because this size is actually the original magazine size of what they are published in during monthly or weekly serialization. It would be cool, though

@@whubblz6676 Think about it the only reason manga is black and white is for speed of the publishing. They already make omnibus so where just added a little size, color and hardcover.

Personally, I JUST picked up volume 1 of Berserk, because i didnt know if they would keep printing them and now that they have 5 down I decided to buy them. I will definitely get these when all 3 release to binge read the series.
I wanna see trigun, drifters, and lone wolf and cub the most in thesr editions. I know people want gantz but atleast thats in print, i think it would be better for series out of print. Trigun only has 14 volumes so they could make 5 deluxe editions with 3 volumes each. Lone wolf and cub has alot of volumes but its finished, and drifters is on going but i would still love to get into the series so a reprint would be nice especially in the deluxe edition format

I went and bought this edition of hellsing without ever reading it or knowing anything about it and i can say it was worth the investment
Is the translation different from the original paper backs? When reading the original I noticed that some of the dialogue was a little clunky like it could’ve been worded better and be a little more fluent when reading it.
During the time of the original manga was released translation wasn’t as good as it is now, not saying there are no translation errors nowadays but it is better than two decades ago.
So I’m wondering if the translation was updated a little bit.
I can’t confirm one way or the other myself because I sold the original volumes in preparation to pick these up. The translator is Duane Johnson, who I believe has been doing translations for decades so he may have done the translation for the paperbacks as well, but if he didn’t then there’s at least one possible piece of evidence to look at
I've just discovered this! As a huge Hellsing fan, this is... well, HUGE! And honestly, the price sounds reasonable when a single manga is roughly $20 and hard to come by individually.

I want Lone Wolf and Cub, and glad to see I'm not alone. I have those tiny omnibus, and am constantly wowed by its amazing ink wash painting art (if that's the correct term). Would go crazy seeing it on such deluxe oversize format. I normally don't double dip, but will definitely go for it.
Still on the fence of Hellsing. I borrowed first 2 volumes to check, but couldn't dig into, especially hate the cartoony sketchy comedy pieces inserted in, that ruining the coherence of the atmosphere and art style. But the deluxe format looks so nice...
I hope that Gantz gets one, and with the Blade of the Immortal one I hope the fix the flipped art thing

I Am A Hero has a high quality omnibus, so I dont think it needs a deluxe edition. Gantz has a shitty ass omnibus, so it could use a deluxe release
However, Lone Wolf And Cub has the shittiest omnibus I’ve ever seen, plus it’s out of print, so I think LWAC really needs one

Outside of Trigun and Gantz, I’d like to see Mob Psycho 100 deluxes and I do hope that other publishers do the same format

I would love to see Battle Royale in this beautifull edition, I know the manga already got the Ultimate Edition but they are so out of print and super expensive that it's practically impossible to get for a normal price unfortunately😔
I’ve been sitting on the first three for years hoping to one day get lucky and find the last two for a good price.
I’ve seen people get unbelievably lucky and fine the whole set for a fraction of cover price.

I have the first 3 Ultimate Editions for a pretty long time now and it's honestly just on the shelve collecting dust, waiting to finally be reunited with the DISGUSTINGLY OVERPRICED remaining 2 books, and it's just sad. Battle Royale deserves it to be released in these gorgeous Deluxe Editions!
@@Wings0fFreedom why not just get the rest in paperbacks? Otherwise wait forever for a good price, or spend hundreds on the rest. I plan on getting just the paperbacks from vol 10 to 15 lol I have the rest in hardcover but oh well.
@@nikkinicole6094 I actually own the paperbacks but they're in really bad condition. I can barely open a page without it almost falling apart 😂 That's why I decided to try and get the Ultimate Editions. Oh well, maybe one day 😩

Dark Horse def does a better job at onmibus editions like this than Viz does. I would love to collect the Vagabond Vizbigs but I've heard the binding is awful and pages fall out
Lmao idk who is manhandling those books but I’ve not had a single page fall out of any vizbigs I own. I’ve got all of DB/DBZ, Inu Yasha, and Vagabond, and even the ones I bought used are bound perfectly.

I honestly wish they would translate Hellsing: The Dawn into English and release it (or what little of it there is) under Dark Horse.
i thought Hellsing was set in England, and the Hellsing organisation works for the Queen and for England stopping anyone who threatens the country. been so long since i read the series but got the HC in the post so happy days :D EDIT: would love to see Gantz and Elfen Lied in this edition

I’ll be honest, I haven’t read Blade so between the other two I would definitely say Berserk. There are a lot of layers there about dealing with grief, depression, toxic masculinity... a lot of really poignant subjects
Sanctury and heat also has to be read in this size, ikegamis art, come on man
Technically hellsing isn’t complete the prequel is still unfinished to this day and it makes me really sad it should be finished.
I only got into hellsing because of the blood and gore and dark themes and the main character alucard

Hardcover version of drifters would be amazing or if they would just reprint volume 2
But the drifters manga is probably never going to reach a conclusion and only has like 10 volumes out right now.

Viz has recently been doing "All in One" Box Editions that just give you a case of the whole series(such as Bakuman, Demon Slayer, Dragon Ball/Z etc), and I think Chainsaw Man is the next one slated after the MHA Part 1 Collection releases(since CSM Vol. 11 just released last week there's gonna be some cooldown.)
It's not quite as dope as an omnibus, but at least there will be some viable option to get the whole series soon.
