- Stuart, who owns The Gables and runs the Visit Hadleigh website, took a step onto the High Street to celebrate the wonderful community we have in the town.

Moving there in August, been many times over the years, first visit was 1963 to the youth hostel near Bildeston, love it, can't wait
Taking a shot here BUT, I'm looking for a place outside Hadleigh I knew as a child, about 8yo. I was told it was about a 2000yo roman outpost/armory which was converted into a home; the walls were about 3' to 4' thick. My Dad was in the USAF and befriended a British Ford engineer there, Mr Morrison. His son was a friend of mine, Manel? Manel and I are about 70yo now as this was around 1962. I remember when you walked out of this unusual home and headed out of town there was a little stream. Let me know as I am visiting from The States in late April, early May. Thanks, David

I grew up there, couldn't wait to move away, but teens in the late 70's was a different place and Ipswich/London appealed more. But fantastic place to visit if never been there and good retirement area.
Though many childhood play area's been turned into sterile housing estates and less pubs for a town that has doubled in size since. Though glad to see the high street character prevailing and indeed, grown into something choice.
In short - watch a few episodes of Lovejoy - if you like that then Hadleigh is the place to go check out.
Though I'm still angry that the council didn't preserve the Roman villa ruins.
Also of note I was there when the Tesco superstore was being built (got sold to some other company in the end and Tesco been fighting to get back into the town since) and was one of the first in the country. During that building works, found some fossils and i'm sure many more there. But hey, you got a big aircraft hanger sized carbuncle instead - yay. Though that's outskirts (well was, probably near center with all the building going on since).
But amazing highstreet and you just can't beat it for character and that is solely down the the period buildings over the sterile, unemotional fodder many towns have and that rubs off onto the people and it is a good thing. So be thankful for that.
Though lots of history there, did you know the Krays went to school there, learnt about crime and when they returned to london, well we all know the rest.
Yes Hadleigh is an education on many levels and so worth a visit.

They stayed at East House with the owners Dr and Mrs Style for about one year before moving back to London as Violet missed her friends and family. While they were in Hadleigh, the twins attended Bridge Street Boys School. When the twins were interviewed in 1989 while at Broadmoor Prison, Ronnie described Hadleigh as their first time in the countryside. What appealed to the twins was the "quietness, the peacefulness of it, the fresh air, nice scenery, nice countryside - different from London. We used to go to a big 'ill called Constitution Hill and used to go sledging there in the winter-time"

Excellent video. I love Hadleigh. In the next video don't forget to mention some of the lovely restaurants too. The Indian restaurants and China Garden. Great place. :-)
