    Up to now I think R.E. have hit the nail on the head with their bikes.
    Good value for the quality of bike.
    Suddenly, especially next to the Hornet, half the bike for similar money.
    It's a miss for me, but to each their own.
    I think that you have picked a winner with the new Transalp.

      I agree with this. If the bike was 1000 or 1500 cheaper it would make sense. But for the tourer version at 8.5 u are at bikes like the nc 750 / mt07 / kawasaki vulcan / versys 650 and so on. Yes the royal enfield looks classic but at this price point for what u get it should be less.

    You are probably spot on with your assessment as I haven't seen one of these yet let alone sat on one or ridden one. But just on the issue of power and torque you are likely spot on. It seems very pedestrian, not what biking is about for me. I reckon if it did have the 70-80bhp and correspondingly more torque as you suggest it would definitely need twin brake discs and callipers so not only more weight but increase in price. RE bikes have never really been my thing, mainly because they are too under powered, aimed at the more cost conscious A2 end of the market.
    I had a look at and sat on a new Hornet in my Honda dealer today. Very comfortable. Lovely in either white or black with red ancillaries. The dealer near me is selling them at £8,400 without the SC project can and QS. I also had a look at and sat on a Kawasaki 900RS in a loverly black and burgundy livery. This is £9,950. Tbh I would rather pay the extra and either get a Hornet or a Z900RS. Paying the extra is so worth it for so much more fun.
    Thanks as always.

    Great review, it’s definitely powerful enough for me, my 125cc Honda used to hold 70mph fully loaded with camping gear and I toured all over on it, did 450 miles in one day down from Scotland back to Sheffield and got off fresh as a daisy, so that’s were I’m coming from when I say the power is enough. Looks wise I’m not sure, it gets a bit messy from below the seat back, don’t like the tubing with a hole and the ring pull, just doesn’t flow, could have been neater, I don’t like the graphite engine cover, would have looked nicer in black, don’t like all the silver coloured stuff up front, would have all looked better in black, yeah I like black 😃 the silver controls look cheap, like they did on the Honda VT750, I’m considering a Meteor 350 but I’m wondering should I pay the extra and get one of these, I don’t know, power wise it’s enough, but do I love it enough when I look at it ??? Yeah it’s too expensive like the interceptor, all bikes are nowadays, even these Enfields, what used to be poor man’s transport is now a rich man’s hobby.

    Very good video! Too often the details that matter to the prospective purchaser - switch gear, how the brakes feel etc. are overlooked with an obsession for manufacture provided stats (which we can all just look up anyway!). The non-comparison with the new Hornet is revealing. A super quick check on autotrader shows you could pick up a second-hand Triumph Americana, Speedmaster, Thunderbird or even Rocket III for that sort of money! None of these really fit into the "beginner-friendly" bracket so knowing what you would actually compare it with is an interesting one

    Thanks for the usual great review. I am a dedicated Honda GW rider in Canada but have mused about setting up shop in northern England (don't judge! 😅) to be closer to my son and his family. I am 66 and short of stature with my girth not quite matching my height. If I do the "snowbird thing" (six months in, six months out) albeit to England rather than Arizona (still trying to convince my significant other to consider a locale like the Algarve or southern Spain), I'd like to get a midsize bike to romp around in. The RE does look like a nice machine for this but I've also heard that mechanical/maintenance issues are the norm. I've been spoiled for so long with Honda products (I even rode the VTX1800 for a few years until its untimely demise - the dreaded left turner on a green light 🤥) that I'd probably stick with a Honda. Sadly, our choices here in Canada for smaller/midsize bikes are quite limited compared to Europe so there are few motorcycles to test here. Anyway, again, love your reviews! 👍

      @@londo0 An extra 10 or so bhp would enhance your'e general enjoyment of the bike without sacrificing the character of the bike and would make it safer during mid pace overtakes. I think they will address this by taking the motor out to 750 in due course. The engine seems designed for potential large overbores

      Here's the comparison I made of the Interceptor vs Speed Twin: th-cam.com/video/EzfW5bvu-Js/w-d-xo.html
      There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the RE, but I personally feel it is a little overhyped. It has become as expensive as - imho - better models, at least here in Europe. It's good looking and has a huge aftermarket following, but it's heavy and really not very exciting to ride. I personally would pay the extra for something like the new Honda Hornet (coming to NA in the summer), but I realise it all depends on what you're looking for in a bike :)

  • @mervynjames569
    @mervynjames569 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the review. I tend to like the cruiser look but have never really wanted one - I am tempted by the Meteor though.
    As for power, yes both the Interceptor and Meteor could benefit from a bit more BHP. However they are restricted to meet a wider Asian market as well as Euro 4 and 5. They are only 650 air cooled engines. I suppose the Honda 500 twins (similar power) are underpowered too, but people buy them. Twice as much power from a Triumph Twin? Well yes, the water cooled Bonneville T120. Great bike even at twice the price of an Interceptor and in some markets the Meteor.
    I expect my Bandit 1250 (145mph+ )is underpowered and too slow for some…….and dated and not trendy enough……
    I think the Meteor 650 will sell well.
    There seems to be a lot of satisfied Interceptor owners (it is only an impression - I am not aware of any surveys) so maybe the lower power doesn’t matter to much. I certainly enjoy riding mine - if anything it feels a bit more fun than a faster bike on non-motorway roads. It’s good round town, you can hustle on country roads - fast enough for most A road speed limits in Europe, and it’s great for just chilling out.
    Take care.

    Had this bike just Iver a month now and felt pretty much the opposite on most things you said. Great thing about opinions and the biker community, we all have our preferences and styles.
    I think the bike looks awesome, rides really well after 400 miles and first service, and the breaks are perfect. The tripper is more of a novelty, but on the few occasions I used it, has done me well. Although I did know where inwas going anyway. Amazing MPG, and really quick when needed to overtake. It’s absolutely hobbled by its lack of grunt and tank-like weight. I’m not a massive fan of Triumph but I’d go for one every time over RE because they’re nearly always double the power and with that, comes safety. The money saving doesn’t swing it for me either. I'm also not very much into the Royal Enfield hype and yes they're not that bad looking, but who buys a motorbike just to look at it.
    But with a performance-weight of 0.195 hp/kg it's very close to the 2023 Harley-Davidson Road Glide at 0.208 hp/kg.

    And it's pretty much what I expected . Adequate but lacklustre components , heavy and with an engine that lacks excitement . [ RE in a nutshhell ].
    Cruisers , [ and this is just my personal opinion , which is entirely biased ] are all about flashy looks and power . This bike doesn't have them .
    Will it please the RE crowd ? Yes of course it will .

    It is expensive in Europe. I´m not ready to pay premium for an Indian bike, not yet. The looks and even the quality are fine, but for experienced riders it is underpowered. That idea of a hyper-variant sounded interesting and I hope somebody at RE listened but if the price goes up (which it is bound to) there are more interesting bikes around. I´ve had my current Kawasaki Vulcan since 2012 and see no reason to look at anything else for the moment as the only cruiser on the market that I might consider is a Honda 1100 Rebel. The cruiser genre lacks interesting middle size bikes for the moment, luckily used cruisers are in abundance on the second hand market so there are bargains to be made. As an older guy (65) a middle size cruiser makes sense, easy to get a leg over and the weight is not too much to handle. But I respect RE for what they have achieved in just a few short years, it is a great "rags to riches" story and there are lessons to be learned here in strategic thinking and marketing. And later in life one of their small capacity bikes might make a great last bike, maybe.

    This was a pretty fair summary but maybe you are missing the point that the enfield is a budget bike that is well put together and does everything pretty well though nothing exceptionally well. I have a number of bikes, some old Brit Triumph and BSA twins, an Interceptor 650 and a Triumph Rocket 3 which is a torque monster and fast. I have owned in excess of 40 bikes in my life including sports bikes and do you know what- the enfield has undoubtedly become my favourite go to bike for everyday use but then of course, I don't own a Honda ADV!     spot on is what i think about a more power model without going silly , ,, the die hard interceptor fans should not be so critical about your test if they say 48 bhp is enough as they are then admitting it bothers them if someone has a jibe ,,, in the uk the bikes for a2 riders need this power setting ,- spot on , but when a yam twin is 73 bhp,,,,, honda twin is loads more ,,,, suzukis 650 is more , and these bikes are in similar price range - then yes re should do a 60 bhp version in my opinion to catch even more sales , this new sm is a little heavy for the power , to give an example i have a unloved by many scr950 v twin yam , it weighs very little more than the bike tested here , has a lowely 54 bhp , - but at one year old with less than 4000 ,miles,, delivered,, choice of two exhausts , no faults for 4800 uk pounds , ;;; shows there are alternatives ;;; and the enfield is NOT that cheap , but still a very good bike ;;

    I am not a Royal Enfield fan, and would never consider buying one for the very reasons you pointed out in your Interceptor video. The Super Meteor seems to offer nothing new in either looks or performance in the small cruiser market. It is also unfair to compare it with the Harley Sportster which is in a different price bracket, delivers 120bhp, and attracts a very different type buyer. I also think its a pointless motorcycle, and I am a Harley owner!. A Honda Rebel 500 is probably the natural competitor to the Super Meteor, and both have the roughly the same power output and look similar!. Interesting to know which one is better?. It's got a second brake disc. All cruisers do. You use that lever near your right foot to actuate it. ALL cruisers stop better with both brakes. Unlike sport bikes, your rear tire won't be off the ground clamping down on the front brake. Not a design issue, you just have to ride differently styled bikes differently.

    I felt a lack of power in the continental 650 because of its weight and therefore will feel this to be under powered for sure, this looks way better than it actually is in my unbiased opinion, and saying anything negative about Royal Enfield bikes always meets with strong pushback and I kinda get that it's not built on numbers but not that much on character or x-factor either, if it did then I would happily choose charm and character and personality over numerical performance.
