  • In 2019, we filmed a traditional Japanese wet shave video in Kyoto with Mr. Shimomae who is now 79 years old. So he was 74 years old when we originally filmed with him. Each year since then, he asks us to update his age in the TH-cam video title 😊❤️
    下前理容室 Shimomae Barber Shop is tucked away on the second floor of a building not too far away from the very popular Shinkyogoku Shopping Street.
    What makes the experience fun is that he is really friendly and loves all the people from around the world who visit his shop, and he has everyone sign a map and guest book 💈❤️🙌🏼 Visitors from the Netherlands, France, Nepal, and Canada have stopped by his shop.

      Japanese seek perfection especially tradesmen/craftsmen like barbers and woodworkers. A simple thing like a shave is treated like work of art since it basically represents barbers skills to the world since his client will be asked where he got shaved. Love that he used three different styles of razors especially since European hair is alot thicker than most asian hair especially japanese facial hair. He didnt just do it for the camera but for his own sense of pride in workmanship

    • @murphypowell7544
      @murphypowell7544 4 ปีที่แล้ว +319

      İt's really just the light they get. Sure, many Japanese people are very orderly and what not, yet WW2 was a different story, most Chinese saw no mercy or respect just as the Chinese don't respect much nor are much disciplined. My point is, these standard assumptions one might have about any country have their limits once one actually gets to be there and/or stays enough in any given place. Not a knock on Japanese but anyone really.

Not a spa, just regular part of any shave to open up the pores first and help hairs stand up, and at the end, to try and calm the skin down to avoid irritation. That’s especially important if you’re shaving someone with a beard. If you go along time without shaving, your hairs get super sensitive

    As a retired barber, who loves giving shaves, its amazing to see how many younger clients have no idea the level of relaxation to be achieved with a good "hot towel" barber shave. It was often the wives who would come in and request a shave to "treat" their man. I had so many return clients based on that alone. When I retired several clients asked me to continue shaving, how could I refuse...

    • @brobrosho
      @brobrosho 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Nothing beats a good shave sadly I cant treat myself to a hot towel in this manner but a straight razor and some light classical is a lovely way to start the day. I'd love to actually find a professional in my area that cared, I have gone to several barbers and been nicked every single time, multiple times. I already had some at home I just didnt know what I was doing so I figured I'd pay for it. Needless to say I learned how to sharpen them properly with the strop and I have yet to cut my face or neck once after atleast 25 shaves. Thank you though for the great service you have provided and continue to provide for the many men out there who's lives you've impacted for the better. Sorry for the rant.

    • @kxixp
      @kxixp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Pretty cool you still have the passion for it that's awesome. Would've loved to enjoy a hot towel shave but all I have is a decent mustache and chin and neck hair, nothing on my cheeks. I doubt that would be worth the price for admission. Thanks for sharing!
