- Last year, we visited Oi Kwan Barbers in Hong Kong for a relaxing traditional hot towel wet shave with a pre-shave facial cleansing. For 58 years Oi Kwan Barbers has been serving the local community around Spring Garden Lane in the Wan Chai district of Hong Kong. Originally opened by Master Lau who was from from China’s Guangdong Province and came to Hong Kong in the 1950s. The shop is now operated by his son Mark Lau.

In 2017 Mark opened a second new shop, featured in this video, on Mallory Street and located in a restored historic Chinese house shop building. The shop was a tribute to his late father and Guangdong barbering culture. Considered a middle class barbershop, the space was a respite from Hong Kong’s urban jungle where a customer indulges in a personalized shave or haircut service.
Mark’s intention was always to preserve a part of Hong Kong’s community barbering history. Sadly, a combination of the pro-democracy demonstrations last year and the pandemic this year has had a major impact on small businesses around the world.
Mark let us know he recently had to permanently close the Mallory Street shop where we filmed this video.
However, the Spring Garden Lane shop is still going, and offers an opportunity for you to feel the original Hong Kong style of barbering. Check them out next time you are in Hong Kong!

This looks so relaxing! My husband HATES shaving, but the onetime I dragged him to a barber for a shave, he loved it. He’d love this channel.
With those skilled and gentle hands and the towel on his eyes my man just took a nap right there and woke up freshly shaved. Incredible work ethic and the whole experience was filled with respect.
I swear the best sounds come from them going through drawers.

You know that woman from the movie Get Out that when she hits the rim of the tea cup and that made him go to deep sleep. Well that's how these sounds on the video do to me, they send into a deep relaxing sleep.
Watching this guy work you can see he has respect for his craft. It’s something you just don’t see enough anymore, someone doing the job at hand to the absolute best of their ability with care and pride. It’s a shame that craftsman like this are suffering in this pandemic after devoting their lives to their work.

Out of all the shaves I’ve watched this seems to be the closest and smoothest. So much skin preparation and use of products.
Total attention to detail ! I love how He goes against the grain near the end. When I shave myself I don’t get a smooth shave unless I go against the grain. Best shave I have ever seen !

it really amazes me the level of perfection he looks for on his shave job, call it passion, vip service, w/e... it's still amazing to watch him take care from the most common thing to the most minuscule detail, and not stopping till he can't find any flaw in his work.

Very cool that he first uses the water bowl to make a cream, then aerates it in the empty bowl to make it a foam. Have not seen a barber do that yet.
I sincerely do not know why is relax me so much ... this barber is very skillful and with certain routine rhythm that it is absolutely nice!!!!!!

Still no idea what's the point of using a trimmer before shaving with a straight razor/shavette. The longer the beard - the easier to map the growth for efficient shaving.
But thumbs up to the barber for squeezing the brush for under-nose application of pre-shave and lather - seems like a simple decision, but haven't seen many doing it)

The longer the beard, the harder is for the lather to effectively reach the skin, thus making the shave less comfortable with potential skin irritation.

I watched this and then made myself a Hot Towel. conditioned my skin and then used a fresh blade for a close shave. But that pales in comparison to this!
What a ritual! Also it never occurred to me that a steel lathering bowl could double as a bell, you know, to summon the shaving spirits.
I still think back to the time i had my first shave in a barber's in the early 90's it was in a side street in Icmeler in Turkey away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist area very smooth finished off with Lemon Cologne my face was glowing best shave ever
