      You are right 52100 is one nice piece of steel. Usually found in customs. Not many production companies use this steel. I know Spyderco has had sprint runs in this steel. Busse uses this in their Swamp Rat and Scrapyard line. I think this Cold Steel version is a good buy. Thanks for the review.

    5160 is one of the lowest edge retention steels, I have used. However, the ballbearing steel I have, that is suposed to be 52100, on a fixed blade, has more edge retention ,than Lionsteels M390. PS It is n't hardened close to 60 or more than that.I also know more people that say that 52100, holds close to Supersteel performance. 5160? That steel is so low on edge retention, that probably even C 75 of cheap Opinels holds more.

    • @knifevideochannel4657
      @knifevideochannel4657  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      5160 that I've used (Buck and OKC RTAK II ) has done ok. It's kept lower RC on purpose as it's designed to be tough as hell at thinner blade Thickness! It's meant to "flex" dramatically without breaking while giving up edge retention. Supposedly you can sharpen it on the bottom of ceramic coffee mug.
      I agree with you on the 52100 punching way about its chemical composition "on paper". I've dropped my Para 3 52100 multiple times tip first onto rocks and concrete with little tip damage.

    I really dislike knives from TOPS. They seem to have their heat treatment revolve around edge retention because all of the torture tests of their knives that I've seen shows that they have really weak tips and all of them crack. When people bend them, they don't sorta spring back to straight or almost straight. They just stay bent or fully snap, much quicker than other knives of similar size and even steel type.
    Knives of this size i would think i'd be less concerned about edge retention and more concerned about sheer durability.
    The Survivalist seems like a great knife for the money.

      I wonder if TOPS differential heat treatment causes some of those problems. I've had good luck with mine , But haven't used the larger ones very hard. I plan on getting a Storm Vector or El Chete. Thanks for watching
