Lived in Trinidad for a long time. People are kind. School is amazing. Everywhere is beautiful. Temp lows in winter are about 30 and Summers in the 70's. If you seek a peaceful place to exist. I have found no where more magical.

Lived in Eureka in 1971-72 right after getting married. We had a very small income so our entertainment budget for the month covered one 33 1/3 vinyl album or a book, 2 tickets to a 99¢ movie at a formerly condemned theater in Arcata, and a 1 gallon jug of Red Mountain wine. I remember seeing Gone W/ the Wind at that theater and everyone jumping up off the folding hard wooden seats at intermission and rubbing their backsides. Also, the air was heavy with the scent of grass. Everyone said that Humbolt's biggest cash crop was marijuana. Gas was cheap in those days so we drove all over the county on weekends and did a lot of hiking at Patrick's Point and Prairie Creek state park. Whenever we were up that way, we made a point of stopping in Trinidad for the best clam chowder you could ever hope for. The town looks a lot bigger now. I also remember the old--and "dirty"--nuclear power plant that was upwind from the Eureka elementary school. I have read the plant was closed down a long time ago but the fuel rods are still stored on site because there's no place to move them. It was a beautiful county. It rained a lot but that was what made it so green and lush.

Wow thank you so much for sharing these memories 😊 I love hearing old/ new friends and neighbors talk of times past and how the county was back then. Such special times in a special place and memories to cherish for a lifetime. Patricks Point (Sue Meg) and Prairie Creek are some of my favorite places on earth! Where are you now?

I went to college there at that time, before the first "real" grocery store. That has changed a lot. You couldn't get Haagen-Dazs, the veggies walked from Central California. With growth comes better stores, traffic and people problems

I used to live in Trinidad. It’s nice to have easy access to the beach. But it’s cold, foggy, windy and rainy. And pretty boring. If you don’t mind those things, it’s a nice place.

Trinidad is the perfect place to settle down and raise a family. I’m college student in Arcata, humco born, I love going to Trinidad to surf and enjoy the beach. Not much to do but when I’m older and want to have a family it’s perfect, and Arcata and eureka aren’t far away to do things. The biggest downside to Trinidad are the airbnbs and vacation homes. Less people are actually living in town these days because everything is an airbnb so rent is going way up. That is really unfortunate 😊

We used to stop there whenever we were in the area in the 80s and 90s.
I remember always stopping by the lighthouse to get some food. It was more of a fancy place back then with steak and seafood if I recall correctly. I still have a banana slug magnet, a handmade mug, and a book about local marine biology signed by the author which I got from their gift shop.
My mother used to purchase shells from a store there for her collection. I remember one she splurged on was $850 which was a lot for a little shell especially back then.

I was camping at Patrick's Point by the time I was born, may been carried over there in utero.
We would usually spend 2 weeks with other families camping there. Launching our ski boat out of Trinidad harbor on that sketchy railroad track thing that went into the ocean..................we went way out to find fish usually.
Hunting agates was of course the thing. I still have lots of them. Im 66 now and still riding motorcycles on back roads from Chico to the coast and all over.
Once, we were there after a storm and agate beach had huge piles of driftwood etc that washed in, some of us kids found a whale had washed in under the driftwood and was buried. The coast guard had to dynamite it and haul it out in pieces later on.
Its in the papers from back in that day, 1972/72 or so. I never get tired of the North Coast.
    -------------------------------
It is a bummer that Katie's Smoke House is no longer there, been gone a long time I guess but I loved that place.
They had the best smoked fish of all kinds, amazing delicacies and great people.
We would drop a salmon or two off for smoking and pick it up later, so good!

I think more and more people from California are going to be moving to towns like Trinidad, with the rise in crime and general plummeting of livability in the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California. I don't know if things are set up for aging retirees who might want walkable places, libraries, churches, a modest cultural center, and a well-equipped hospital. City folk might have misconceptions of Humboldt, imagining there are huge cannabis farms and rough, tribal hippies who tend them. I met a few off-grid cannabis growers and they weren't the nicest people I've come across. I like neighbors who get along and respect the law.

My thoughts, questions and concerns as well! A stunningly beautiful area I have loved since I was a child growing up in a beach city in So Cal. Always dreaming one day of trading the sun drenched beach for a lush green area with a rocky beach. I have considered Shelter Cove, Sea Ranch, among other nearby areas, but I wonder about the realty of such areas for retirement. Such as you mentioned, a well-equipped hospital. My understanding is Humboldt County has areas with a significant amount of crime. There is that desire for rural and seclusion, but you have to accept you won’t have access to a leading hospital, great schools for your grandkids and even, sigh, perhaps, dare I say, Costco or Target.

I always feel the fog creates a bit of a gloomy atmosphere. Difficult to describe. As I am easily depressed this very much affects me. Even the houses are all in the same grey color. Not exactly a happy tropical vibe here. Also with very small towns like this it quickly gets boring plus everybody knows everybody so no privacy or secrecy which not everybody can get used too. If you get into a problem with someone which will happen then you bump into the same person every day.

There were 2 women in line in front of me one around 20 the other around 40, obviously a mom and daughter. They both were poster kids for meth addiction-the mom looked 80 and the daughter looked 40. It was sad. Next morning as I left I stopped at a fast food place to grab something to eat. In the 30 feet to the door, I got pan handled twice ( I just waved them off) and when I walked back to my car, one of the ones who panhandled me on the way in started screaming at me to give him money. Beautiful place, truly, but be fore-warned Moonstone Beach, which has a river mouth nearby, has had Great White shark attacks and several in Humboldt Co.Aug-Dec/ Fall is a happy lunchtime for Great Whites. Great whites are prevalent all along the west coast and down to Baja too! Can’t live life in fear - but definitely take necessary precautions. If fishing from a kayak, don’t gut your fish from the boat while out at sea. They don’t want to eat humans but have accidentally mistaken humans for seals. It is much more dangerous to drive to the beach.
