Great review. This should make a good 3+ season tent. I love the fact that you can completely close off the doors, particularly here in the deep south. I wish one of these manufacturers would incorporate side window ventilation with a stake out or pole out awning over the window so you can leave them open during undriven rain. I love that you can open and close the vents from the inside.
Rented one about 10 years ago. We were in a 2-day windy/rainy downpour. It held up great! It was really nice being able to remove wet gear before entering tent. Highly recommend.
Thanks for commenting. We really like the tent. It's not perfect but it works really well for what we need when we car camp. We are really happy with our purchase.
I have the REI Base Camp 4. I use it for colder weather here in Virginia. It is always windy here during the cooler seasons and the Base Camp is solid in the storms and wind. Great video!!
Thanks for watching. We love our Basecamp. We have mostly used it in cooler weather and have had no problems. We will be using it for a couple weeks coming up in June and I'm hoping for good air flow to help it feel cool enough in the shade.

Thanks for the review!! Looking at getting this tent. Alaska camping and dip netting near the water gets windy and rains. Looks like this tent will do the job!!
Great overview and setup! We’ve had our original kingdom 6 for ten years now and I think this would be a nice replacement. More structurally sound and better rain fly that covers more and creates the vestibules.

So I picked up the Base Camp 6 .... love it. the bag it comes in is the only complaint, at least its not to tight, but the bag encourages you to drop the tent right on the end on the poles, this is just asking for trouble. I like how the tent engineered, they really though of everything.
You're totally right about the bag. It definitely leaves something to be desired. It really can't cost that much more to sew a bag with a zipper on it.

I don't believe that tent will be accompanying you on a hike in the upper Guadalupe 😉. Thanks again for posting quality videos on your channel 👍😉👌
No, I doubt I'll be carrying this much farther than the short distance from the car to the tentpad. REI makes pretty decent gear for what it is. It has worked for us in the past.
If you get 4 more stakes, you can pull the fly out by the 2 triangles, by instead of attaching the fly with the buckles, you can pull the fly and stake it with the loops for the buckles, to increase the ventilation for the lower triangular vents I do this to my older style Kingdom 6 for extra ventilation.
Ha! Thanks again, commented earlier this evening on your Kingdom 6 and being confused on my choice of ⛺ I can proudly say that after subscribing to your channel and finding this video, this will be my next tent. Thanks again for a great video and all the information!
We got this tent recently and did 4 nights in Big Bend NP. The tent held up really well in the desert backcountry near Black Gap in really windy conditions. The next morning I talked to someone at another campsite in the Chisos who had the Kingdom 6 and they said the winds broke one of their poles. I think you made a good choice.
I definitely know that you want to turn the Kingdom into the wind. Made a huge difference. We took the Base Camp out this weekend and loved it. Even in rain. I watched peoples tents blow over and snap poles at Guadalupe Mountains this past month and that pretty much sold me on a sturdier design.
The 6 is a good amount of space for 4 of us. And makes it possible to squeeze in an extra kid or two. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Thanks a lot for watching.

I havent taken this tent to Guadalupe Mountains yet. It will fit in most campsites at the park. I did ultimately decide to go with this style of tent because of its shape and strength against weather and wind. Dome style tents handle wind much better than tents of other shapes. I wouldn't hesitate to take it to GUMO.
@@CameronHall88, I'm thinking the end of this month will be my first trip back there in many years. Two years ago I had a liver transplant; this will be my first camping trip since then. I'll let you know how the tent holds up. Thank you.
I have never personally used the Grand Hut but I did look at it online. There were a couple things I didn't like about design. I didn't care for the single plastic hub design (where all the poles come together). And I read a lot of reviews about how poorly it performed in weather. And I watched it in the famous winds of the Guadalupe Mountains, flex all over the place. That helped me make up my mind that while I still wanted a 6 person tent, I wanted something that would preform well in wind and rain. The Basecamp fit that for us.
I'm not sure if you've seen this video review of the Kingdom 6 we did a few months ago - th-cam.com/video/gxXBsIsmBEA/w-d-xo.html. But when comparing it to our older version Kingdom 6, it just wasn't as good. And it ended up leaking on us during a small rain storm on one of our first trips with it. So we wanted to go for something different and little more storm worthy. The dome style tent handles wind a lot better. It's still big enough for our family of 4 but my boys are getting to where they like sleeping in their own tent most of the time, so the square shape of the Basecamp 6 still works out for how we sleep in the tent most of the time. I miss the garage from the original Kingdom 6. I hated it on the new version. The Basecamp 6 gives us an awning for easy access into the tent without getting the inside of the tent wet if its raining.
Hello! Thank you for this walk through. Super appreciate it. I have read through the comments and see that you are enjoying the tent. I would like to know how it performs in the heat. Have you any experience with the Marmot limestone 6p? we use cots and I am curious if 3 cots can be arranged inside the basecamp?
Thanks a lot for watching. I honestly haven't camped in really hot weather in this tent. We used it during winter and spring. It gets pretty warm here during spring and the tent worked well enough for that. But I don't know how well it'd vent in really hot weather. Although the lower vents do help move air. I'm not familiar with the other tent so I couldn't compare the two. If you're wanting something specifically for hot weather, a tent with more mesh may be better than the Basecamp. But if you're wanting something for all or most seasons, the Basecamp is a really good tent.
Just found this video. Heard you mentioned Texas a few times.. Do you think this tent will hold up to Texas thunderstorms?? We had Eureka's for about 10 years and they held up really well. We want to buy new tents for youth group, looking for good quality and tents that make it through these storms!
So I definitely think structurally it will hold up. Dome shaped tents are better for handling winds than some other shapes of tents. That being said, we tried a REI Kingdom 6 prior to this tent and it leaked. The seems weren't sealed well. We have had the Basecamp 6 in a couple of good rains now and it did flawlessly so far. Plus the good thing about buying from REI is being able to return the tents for up to a year, no questions asked, if there ends up being something you don't like about them.
Nice review. Looking forward to an updated review once it has been used a few times. What is your experience if any with sending an REI tent back to REI for tent repairs? I have a Eureka Tetragon 8 that has almost 10 years of use. I have sent the tent back to Eureka three times to repair rips and tears (with a family of 6 it has endured some wear and tear from rambunctious kids). However, they no longer sell the Tetragon 8 and I am looking for an 8 person tent to replace it. Wish the Base Camp came in an 8 person version. I was looking at the King Dome 8 as an alternative but you indicated in your review you did not like it.
I have never sent anything back to REI for repair. I have returned something within the first year and that was super easy. But our Kingdom tent never had to be repaired thankfully. But there were so manything wearing out on it recently, it wasn't worth getting repaired to me. You guys may like the Kingdom tent. I think I would have liked it more if I wasn't comparing it to the older version. And I believe the seams leaking was a flaw in our specific tent. But I could be wrong. I hope the Basecamp 6 works out for us. It seems like a really good tent. But if it doesn't, the next brand I'll buy/try will be Eureka. Either the Boondocker or 8 person Copper Canyon.
@@CameronHall88Eureka has fantastic customer service. The three times I sent my tent back for repairs they were awesome. I dislike the cabin style tents like the Copper Canyon. Cabin Style tents in my opinion just don't hold up as well as Dome Style tents in inclement weather.

So I can't comment on that too much. But you can close it up so it's not drafty on chilly nights. Glad we made this purchase.
I’m waiting for a company to produce a 6-person tent with a low bath tub floor and total mesh covering under a separate rain fly. With up to 6-person inside, you need as much ventilation as possible.

@@bajunior0218 I didn't go with the Big Agnes because of price and negative reviews. And didn't go with the Limestone because of the price. I honestly didn't look into it as deeply as the other tents. I spent a ton of time stressing over which to buy. The great thing about REI is if the tent doesn't work out for any reason, you are able to take it back. I'm really happy with the Basecamp 6 although it was a little different than what I was originally looking for.
Thanks for the review. Keep up the good work. I was really close to getting the Kingdom until you reviewed that. Now that you’ve had it for sometime, what are your thoughts? How was it in colder temperatures? Are you going to keep this one?
We really like the Basecamp 6. It fits our family of 4 well. And when my wife and I have stayed it it alone, it is really bigger than we need. The front vestibule is like a tiny version of the Kingdom garage but it still works as a good way to enter the tent without getting it wet inside. It has worked well for us in the cold. No condensation or anything. I'm more concerned how it'll be in the hotter months but I won't know for a while. We definitely plan on keeping it. I also appreciate the money savings over the Kingdom plus the garage.
We don't camp a lot during summer. And when we do, I get a shaded electric site and put a box fan in the tent. So air flow isn't really a good consideration. Overall we have camped in the tent quite a bit since getting it and still really like it. It has held up well in some good size rain, including one day when it rained for 12 straight hours.
@@CameronHall88 thanks for the reply! Hadn't thought about the box fan approach! I've watched about as many videos about picking a tent as I can handle. Really appreciated yours! I think I'm just going to go with this one as I think the features are there plus it looks pretty cool. Thanks again!
Purchased this tent, got it home, ran the poles through it and immediately tore the tent upon sliding a pole through the guide. The material tore easy than paper. Seams were not taped either. Material was so thin and I was able to just grab 2 sections and tear it with very little strength. I have a Walmart tent that I paid 50 bucks for that's harder to tear than this thing.
Wow, I think REI's QC may be lacking. Our tent has preformed well in rain so far. But our Kingdom 6 leaked. I do know they didn't even offer it on their website recently. May have been a quality issue. You'd think if they just ran out of them, they'd at least still offer them for backorder.
I think we're due for one as we have had this tent in just about every type of weather for where we typically camp (not heavy snow). We still love the tent. It has held up well in heavy wind and rains. It's awesome in cooler times and cold parts of the year. I wish the entire door was mesh. That'd make the tent almost perfect to me. But we use a box fan in the tent when car camping near electricity in summer and that helps a lot with air flow when the vents of the tent aren't allowing enough flow. We also had water soak into the fabric for the rods that can hold the top vents open. And if the rod is pointed down, you may get a couple drips in. And in that same storm we had some fine mist get forced through the top vents even with them closed. But that was in a huge (think destroying people's awnings) storm. We stayed 99.5% dry and I was extremely happy with the way the tent preformed.
They might be going away from this and to a new style. But often times, they quit selling a tent and come right back with a newer updated version of the same tent after the original sells out. That'd be my guess.
Thanks for the video! It will help my former-wife and son learn how to setup this marvelous tent and have a great camping trip.

No condensation or anything. I'm more concerned how it'll be in the hotter months but I won't know for a while. We definitely plan on keeping it. I also appreciate the money savings over the Kingdom plus the garage.
Good catch!
Hah, thanks! Definitely not a light tent by any means!
How has it done for you through the Texas summer? Also, great review!
Have you reviewed this tent yet? What do you think of this tent? Thanks!
@@CameronHall88 Sounds great! Thanks for replying! Sounds like a great tent. :)
Tent is no longer available, but the reviews sure are....???
They might be going away from this and to a new style. But often times, they quit selling a tent and come right back with a newer updated version of the same tent after the original sells out. That'd be my guess.
