- Akon City, a futuristic African city was unveiled amidst great hype in 2018 by R&B singer, Akon. This real world Wakanda-esque city is to be built in the country of Senegal where he is from. But since then, little has materialized apart from the foundation stone which was laid at the unveiling of the site in 2020. So, is Akon City turning out to be more of a con city?
In Akon’s defense the Covid pandemic put a spanner in the works and created a 2 year delay. However, in an interview he gave on @vladtv in October 2022, the singer claimed that construction would commence in 2023 and the city would be completed by 2026. To date, there is scant sign of any type of construction with only livestock grazing the arid land of Mbodiene. In this video we’ll unpack why we think Akon City will never get built.

The thing is, why would you want to build another city when the place that you grew up is in shambles why not fix the place you grew up in and make it better

Why would you build a whole entire city without trying to change the city that you grew up in or the surroundings? Or even tried to do a little updates around your city. I think he needed like $4 billion for the city that he’s going to build. Do do you know how helpful that $4 billion could’ve did for his country.

I wonder why Akon would even want to build a whole new city without first consulting engineers on feasibility, or at least try to improve Dakar. With all that money and influence, he could upgrade Dakar's infrastructure to meet a growing population and economy. From there, other cities can be invested and improved as well so Senegal won't be too dependent on one city

Unfortunately, I don't have your influence, and people who can't fathom an idea this colossal will always have negative things to say about it.
