How old is your Gem and where did you get it. . They are hard to find as most of the trees are going to the growers because they are smaller trees eàsy to harvest without ladders and of high quality making them perfect for growers. When will you pick the Gems and what part of the country do you live iñ and what root stock is your Gem on. I would have liked you to cut it open to see how big the swedish are. They look to be smalle4 than they Hass. You didn't show much of your garden just focused on the gem. From the little I could see your garden looks healthy and beautiful. Are you near the ocean or way inland. I have been wondering in reality how much cold the Gem can take and how many years it took to fruit. Some one I know planted some Hass seeds several years ago and the trees grew beautifully in a pot. But this year the leaves got little medium brown dots on them all over the leave. I have never seen that on any plant before. They bought an all purpose insect spray from Home Depot that was quite expensive but it did nothing. Of course it is unlikely they will ever produce Avacados they were lovely plants. Several in one pot añd fed with some organic fertilizer on the soil and some fertilizer in a spray. Watered always with bottled water. Never any brown tips or anything before these brown tips. Well I hope to see more of your garden. I heard a water fall. Do you have a fish pond and how many square feet is your garden. Haven't seen any of those Gem's in the stores yet. Just the Hass from Mexico that sometimes hàve areas of brown in them. Don't know what causes that unless it is cold storage but I don't like to pay one dollar or more for an Avacado and find brown areas so I seldom buy them. Happy growing. GEMS are not dwarf trees, but if you leave fruit on when young you get little growth, mine planted last Fall is now 8 feet tall as I only allowed one fruit to mature. I'll let it hold more next year.
Someone really told you a fib as to the height of the GEM tree. They will grow higher and higher I have some I planted in 2012 and they were up to 20 ft tall, but that is because I wanted to see their growth pattern. The advantage of the tree itself is that it is VERY upright, like a Christmas tree. As a grower this allowed me to have an orchard in high density, meaning normally Hass plantings are usually 136 to 156 trees to the acre. My GEM trees are in a tight spacing so I have up to 600 trees per acre, and thus I can generate a tremendous amount of fruit per acre. That being said the fruit is outstanding and so beautiful. Glad your tree is doing well, prune at the height you want it to stay at.
Gem can grow tall like 12 to 16 feet but I guess it's still a dwarf tree compare to the Hass tree I seen some Hass avocado trees up in Escondido like 25 feet tall super tall .
