    Last of the Time Lords
    DOCTOR: “But you're changing history. Not just Earth, the entire universe.”
    MASTER: “I'm a Time Lord. I have that right.”
    The Water of Mars
    ADELAIDE: “But you said we die. For the future, for the human race.”
    DOCTOR: “Yes, because there are laws. There are Laws of Time. Once upon a time there were people in charge of those laws, but they died. They all died. Do you know who that leaves? Me! It's taken me all these years to realise the Laws of Time are mine, and they will obey me!”
    Utopia
    DOCTOR: “Master. I'm sorry.”
    MASTER: "Tough!
    "
    The Waters of Mars
    ADELAIDE: “You can't know that. And if my family changes, the whole of history could change. The future of the human race. No-one should have that much power.”
    DOCTOR: “Tough.”

      And yet you can still see just the hint of trepidation and discomfort in Paula's face. That's why this is probably my favorite episode to watch reactions to. The mix of emotions and just how it manifests itself among different people is really something to see.

      Reading this, it just hit me that this episode happens "right after" the Doctor lost everything *but* more specifically right after he lost *Dona* !.
      !!!!!And if you think about it in these 3 last episodes! He has acted or experienced things like he would have wanted to live them with each of his companion!!!!!!
      IN THE "NEXT DOCTOR" he gets to experience a *human* doctor, who at the end of the day can have a normal life and love freely and wholey........a.k.a what he wanted to have with Rose!
      IN THE "PLANET OF THE DEAD* he has a good adventure with the burglar and then he *let's he go* ........like he surely wishes he had done with Martha!
      AND IN THIS ONE he *saves* someone *against* the rules just like Dona wanted in Pompeii!!!
      He plays it of as arrogant and TimeLord victorious but the truth is he just can't. bare. to stand by and watch even. more. brilliant! people vanish right on front of him ::')
      ......No...No I'm fine. I'm not crying.... You're crying!!

    LOLed so hard at Katrina's reaction from 0:20-0:30 I had to pause the video. Still wanna keep your Martian spa date Paula?
    This episode has some of the best writing/acting/directing of any TV show. Even knowing what was coming I was still getting emotional watching the Martian crew struggle against the inevitable. And then to see the Timelord Victorious, the closest the Doctor's ever come to following in the Master's footsteps, was just as horrifying as the Martian water.
    2 weeks and counting. . .

  • @Longshanks1690

    There are two episodes here: The Waters of Mars and The Time Lord Victorious.
    The former is a really great Doctor Who episode with a brilliant setup, great suspense, interesting characters, intriguing mystery, a serious threat and an all around brilliant atmosphere to it. If the episode had ended with the rest of the crew on a normal Mars mission escaping via TARDIS, it'd be a great episode either way
    ...But we are blessed that it's not on it's own, for then there's the end result of Four Seasons and the year of Isolation taking their toll: The Time Lord Victorious.
    Before now, the Doctor has always been constrained by various factors, his companions above all who keep him to a level of accountability that neither of them are really aware of, but it still happens. The most obvious example is Donna in Fires of Pompeii.
    But nevertheless, The Doctor is ruled by a strict set of ethics and principles regarding Space-Time travel and until now, the line has been blurred as to what a "fixed" point is. But now we know it's simply what the Time Lords regard as such...for good damn reason. They did well to instill a young Doctor with these rules.
    But when everything and everyone was dying all around him, he finally realised something. That he no longer had no live up to those rules.
    He didn't have a companion to give him that moral support and boundary so all he had was his own potential to continue untapped. And what became of it?
    They don't call him the Lonely GOD for no reason because that's what the Doctor is to the rest of the universe. A God. A being beyond comprehension and understanding who strides across the universe imposing his will where he sees fit.
    But we are thankful the Doctor was always less than this, for he had his companions to remind him of what common decency was and the laws of the Time Lords to remind him that Time was not a toy and it was not to be meddled with.
    ...But those influences on the Doctor are one and the same, imprisoning his greater potential because at his unburdened height? Even Morgoth himself could not wreak such unfathomable havoc as the Doctor if he should have desired it.
    With no companion to keep him safe, all that was left were the Laws of Time...but when no one is there to remind you that you are mortal like everyone else and that the universe does not simply obey your will, why would you ever continue to obey the latter?
    It so brilliantly explains WHY the Doctor needs a companion and, more importantly, why he needs to obey rules and boundaries rather than doing what he pleases.
    If you are truly this force that needs no one, then you truly will become the Oncoming Storm. And the universe will pay the price.

    @Dasharr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Doctor's actions make so much sense each step of the way. He's always saving people in situations like this. The laws of time say not to interfere at fixed points in time... but the Time Lords are the keepers of the laws of time, and if the Doctor is the last of the Time Lords, then the laws of time really are his to command.
    Without his companions to humanise him, the Doctor gradually takes the role of a god. A benevolent god... but still a god.

    • @Dasharr
      @Dasharr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just noticed how many times I wrote the word "time" in one paragraph there. 😂

    • @Dasharr
      @Dasharr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dickum N Lickum the V: Emperor Of TH-cam. I wrote "keepers of the laws of time" not "keepers of time". The fact that they were advanced meant that they had the power to enforce their laws (mostly), and that's all that laws are - rules made by those with the power to threaten punishment to those who don't obey them. Whether those laws are just or unjust is a different question (one that I don't think we know enough about them to answer).
      I also wrote that the Doctor "takes the role of a god" not that the Time Lords were gods. When the stakes are as high as controlling the course of history of the universe, and one person holds the power to do it and then decides that he alone is the sole authority over what's just, then that is assuming a god's role.
      Finally, I didn't claim that the Doctor was morally right, just that his actions made sense. He did place Brook into a position where she had to choose between suicide or risking humanity's future (which isn't the same thing as forcing suicide) but the end result was that she died on the same day regardless - but two others of the Mars colonists lived because of him, instead of them all dying. The result was a net positive, it's just that the actions leading to it were arrogant.

    “The Waters of Mars” shows what the Doctor would be like if power went to his head. It shows what the weight and responsibility of being the “last of the Time Lords” really does to him. The Doctor starts to blame himself for all the death and destruction around him. All of the pain and guilt from everything he’s been through comes back to haunt him. He even references “The Fires of Pompeii”, which is such a great callback because the situation here in this episode directly parallels that episode, which is no accident. However, there's also one key difference, no Donna. The Doctor's lost her and everyone else he ever cared for and more. All his own people, all his family and friends by this point, but he knows he could save them all if he really wanted to. He could save everybody, so why should he continue to suffer? Most importantly though, he could save himself. You see the events in “The Waters of Mars” occur after 10 gets told he's about die in “Planet of the Dead”. This plays a massive part in his actions during “The Water of Mars” too. The Doctor's testing how far he can really go, he’s testing the limitations of his power because if he can change time and save those people, perhaps he can save himself as well? He thinks because the rest of the Time Lords are dead anyway, all the laws of time now belong to him. As the one to end the time war, the Doctor begins to think he’s more than just a survivor, he’s a winner. He finally realises what he’s always been since the end of the Time War, the “Time lord Victorious”. In his mind he now has the right to do as he pleases. The Doctor very nearly becomes what he vowed to never become, the Master. The Master really is the Joker to the Doctor’s Batman. This story “masterfully” (pun very much intended) builds towards 10’s regeneration as it makes it clear his time is over and that he’s basically a broken shell of the man he was in “The Christmas Invasion”. At this point he needs to change to start anew.

    "The Waters of Mars” also shows the importance of the Doctor having a companion. How different would this episode be if the Doctor had Rose, Martha, Donna or ANYONE else travelling with him? He’s tired of losing everyone though. He thinks he puts his companions in danger, which is why he’s been travelling alone since “Journey’s End”. Davros had a huge impact on the Doctor with his words; no one has hurt the Doctor as much as he did. However, he should never be alone because as Donna once said, "sometimes I think you need someone to stop you". That’s another great thing about the twist in this episode; it doesn’t come out of nowhere. 10 always had an arrogant side, you could even say a bit of a God complex. In his very first episode, he deposed Harriet Jones (effectively changing time because 9 mentioned that Harriet Jones would lead Britain into a “golden age” in "World War Three") just because she did something he disagreed with. Yeah and guess who replaced her? Harold Saxon aka The Master; the Doctor inadvertently gave the Master an entry point and an opportunity to take over. He made things worse. He also declared himself the “highest authority” in “New Earth” and almost gave into the power Finch (Anthony Head's character) was offering him in "School Reunion". It took Sarah Jane to talk him to his senses back then. He also drowned all of the "Racnoss" children in “The Runaway Bride” (As we saw in "Turn Left", Donna being there stopped the Doctor from killing himself) and brutally punished the “Family of Blood” by trapping them all in their own personal and eternal hells. This Doctor was always shown to have the potential to go off the rails and it was made clear time and again that he needed someone by his side to reel him in. This story is the brilliant culmination of the Doctor’s character arc that’s been building up since the start of the RTD era.

    From a storytelling POV, "The Waters of Mars" has no equal, but it's got a hell of an innovative, scary monster in the Flood too. They're basically zombies, but the way it's done and the twist put on the concept is fantastic. It’s terrifying that something as mundane as water could turn a person into something that horrific. The effect of the cracked skin around the mouth, the blackened mouth and the water just gushing out of them is simply fantastic. The idea of it taking just one drop for someone to become infected and in the same way the entire Earth is also bone chilling; water always wins as the Doctor said. I think it's commendable that RTD and Phil Ford used such a clichéd idea, but were still able to make it seem so fresh. They're one of the greatest monsters in Doctor Who history. This story also has a fantastic supporting cast; led by the wonderful Lindsay Duncan (she plays Adelaide Brooke). It's amazing how well developed and distinct from one another these characters are, considering how quickly we're introduced to all of them. It's brilliant the way we know that they're all destined to die right from the start. There's such a tragedy to the way things spiral out of control and the way they struggle to save themselves. We know all of their efforts are in vain. It's even more tragic to see the Doctor stand back and refuse to do anything. We know that he could easily save them all if he wanted to and we see him struggle with that conflict within himself throughout the episode. The scene when the Doctor's walking away from the base and is listening to them dying is heartbreaking. The worst moment is when the woman (her name escapes me) turns on a screen to see her children one last time before being infected. Of all the characters we're introduced to though, one in particular stands out.....
    Adelaide is such a strong and independent character. She challenged the Doctor and in many ways was his equal. Her backstory of losing both her parents during the events of "The Stolen Earth"/Journey's End" is such a clever way to tie this story in with previous ones and make Adelaide seem important and a part of the world RTD has taken so much care to build up. It's amazing to see that even a Dalek spared her. It refused to interfere with the natural course of time, which makes the Doctor's actions later in the episode look even more deplorable. The Dalek knew Adelaide couldn't die there, it somehow sensed that she was heading for something else. She had a more important role to play in the future and it's her experiences as a child that shapes the person she grows up to be. The journey Adelaide goes on throughout the episode itself is also incredible. It's so sad to see her very natural reaction to learning about her death; she does everything to resist it. Throughout the episode though, she keeps on prodding the Doctor for information, just to see what he knows. The more he says, the more she understands why he's not helping and why she has to die. She slowly comes to accept her fate by the end and lets the Doctor leave, but is then horrified to see the man who had been so insistent on leaving and not helping her come back and break all his own rules. She recognises that the Doctor has completely lost it and tries to work against him and stacks impossible odds against him (turning on the self-destruct) and yet he STILL succeeds! She realises that this man is capable of anything in his current state and that she has to stop him. To have the courage to put aside her own life for the greater good of the universe takes a will of steel. If it wasn’t for her intervention, who knows what would’ve happened? What the Doctor would’ve done in his mental state? What a way to make a point too, suicide! Talk about getting dark..... Doctor Who is just a children’s show though, right?
    What Donna said about the Doctor needing someone to stop him also comes back into effect again. Then there's also "Mr Copper's" warning from the end of "Voyage of the Damned", "of all the people to survive, he's not the one you would have chosen, is he? But if you could choose, Doctor, if you decide who lives and who dies, that would make you a monster." Suddenly the Doctor is jolted back into reality and he realises to his horror what he’s done and what he was so close to becoming. Perhaps the best part of this episode comes right at the end. As soon as the Doctor stepped out of the Tardis, there was something different about him. He even says "isn't anyone going to thank me"? Since when has the Doctor wanted people to thank him? You can also see how much this whole experience had frightened Mia. Normally the Doctor would attempt to comfort her, but he did no such thing here. Instead it’s almost as if he sneered at her, looked at down at her. Something had changed about his eyes, the warmth and compassion in them was gone. Arrogance and contempt filled them instead and it was absolutely terrifying. This was just a tour de force of a performance by Tennant, my favourite performance from him in the role. It may very well be my favourite performance from any actor in the role. All of these fantastic elements come together to make this the best Doctor Who story ever imo.

    There is a DW fanfiction about TImelord Victorious.. Timelord names are a promise. No longer the Doctor, but devoting himself to victory. It involves all the old companions from this point trying to kill him as he has become a warlike dictator over the entire universe, leading an army of Cybermen and Daleks and all other races. All because of this act

    I really hope that next week they do The End of Time as a megasode like the end of series 1; we already had a week of waiting back in 2009/10, don't make us go through that again! Haha, love this episode though--mind you, I've always wondered why the Dalek didn't kill Adelaide because she's a fixed point in time; surely if they were wiping out all of creation, fixed points don't matter any more? Maybe I missed something?

    This is still one of my faves. I just really love the dark place they went to with the Doctor and had really hoped they were going to extend that into his final story. Unfortunately, we got 'End of Time' instead (which, I'm sorry, but I think that was an epicly stupid story and Tennant deserved so much better for his send-off as the Tenth Doctor). Still, I like to just imagine Ten ACTUALLY regenerated at the end of this story and that all the WTF-ness of 'End of Time' was just a regeneration sickness fever dream. Because yeah...'End of Time' was all kinds of awful. :/

    I would love a 3 part finale where the doctor turns evil at the end of the first episode then second episode is the doctor just messing stuff up being worse than the master then finish off the 2nd episode with the companion be the one that causes the doctors regeneration then have the new doctor fix everything. would be a chance of pace of always having the ending scene be a regeneration then waiting 2 years to see the new doctor in action. but sadly the bbc cares more about making new regeneration's a big publicity stunt because it inflates the numbers on premier night

    The Doctor says a fixed point must always happen. But that can only happen once certain conditions are met that can lead to that moment, right? Let's say World War II was a fixed moment. That can only happen if there is a World War I before, which Germany loses, an imperialist age before that and colonialism and capitalism happen before that and so on.
    Let's say that if history had taken place differently, if Europe had never colonized other continents, then history would've been completely different and World War II couldn't.
    With Adelaide Brooke, what if she had never been born? That relies on her parents meeting, on their parents meeting and so on. Sure, you could say that the Mars Base is occupied by other people who take their place? (like if Hitler had never been born - would some other fascist lead Germany into a dictatorship?).
    That's an interesting question regarding fixed points.

    Ok, while this episode is mostly flawless, there is ONE big problem it raises:
    If Adelaide's Dalek knew who she was, which was why it didn't kill her...did no one tell it that Davros was planning to DETONATE ALL OF REALITY AND HER ALONG WITH IT?!
    The future of Human spacefaring won't really matter when you're about to MURDER EVERY RACE THAT EVER LIVED!
    Why did it care? Why would a Dalek care about preserving the Timeline, especially one in this Dalek Fleet?

    • @Mrazmatmahmood
      @Mrazmatmahmood 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You made this exact same comment on other people's reaction to this episode and I (among many other people) gave you an answer. Why are you still hung up on this so called "problem"?
      For the benefit of Paula, I'll post my comment again. Killing Adelaide in 2008 could've meant that the human species might develop much slower. She was a very important part of the advancement of space travel, so it could've meant satellite Five would never have been created. We all know how important that was to the Daleks in series 1 and since back in the RTD era, the Daleks had a consistent arc and each of their appearances flowed into one another, it makes sense for the Dalek to sense how important it is for Adelaide to live.
      There's also the matter of the Doctor to consider. Everything that happened on satellite five lead to the ninth Doctor's regeneration and the Doctor during Journey's End was of course the tenth. Another potential paradox would be created if they killed Adelaide and satellite five disappeared. The fractured timeline would probably destroy everything, including the Daleks. It makes sense for the Daleks to avoid that. In a sense, the Dalek chose to lose one battle in order to win the war.

    • @Longshanks1690
      @Longshanks1690 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Azmat Mahmood Because none of the answers ever provided thus far have ever been a satisfactory answer, and largely based on conjecture not supported by the episode to get around the fact that the Daleks now apparently have a vested respect for the Laws of Time.
      Satellite Five? Yes, because during indiscriminate slaughter of mankind during their invasion, there’s no way the Daleks could have killed the ancestors of:
      - The architects of S5.
      - The workmen who built S5.
      - The engineers who installed the programming of S5.
      - Anyone involved in getting the Holy Jagrafess into S5.
      - Anyone involved in any of the significant events in the history of the four Great and Bountiful Human Empires.
      This is the exact definition of the Butterfly Effect, especially in a world where the majority of Time is in a state of flux.
      So if the Daleks were truly concerned about ensuring the Emperor’s defeat on this station, why would they ever risk a single, solitary human life?
      Hell, their whole PLAN means that not only with the First Great and Bountiful Human Empire never rise but all the people that the Emperor will use for Dalek meat, so to speak, will never be born.
      Davros’ plan actually fucks with what the Emperor will do more than this dalek killing Adelaide there and then ever could have.

    • @Mrazmatmahmood
      @Mrazmatmahmood 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Longshanks1690 The Daleks didn't suddenly develop a "respect" for the laws of time. They were following the laws of time as long as it served them. Also, was it "indiscriminate"? The Daleks were selecting people to take for the testing of the reality bomb. It's very possible those people were selected for very specific reasons. And after Davros and the Daleks would have destroyed ALL OF REALITY (except themselves), the preservation of timelines and the laws of time wouldn't have really mattered would they? However, until they succeeded, they needed to keep people like Adelaide alive, just to be on the safe side.

    • @Longshanks1690
      @Longshanks1690 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Azmat Mahmood Um yes, it was absolutely indiscriminate. We see the Dalek fleet zoom through the streets of New York brazenly opening fire on any and all buildings at will. The same with the one that flew over Rose’s head in London. Who knows how many people they killed in a global manner like that whose descendants may have been just as, if not more, important than the Brookes?
      And in reference to the RB testing, why were Sarah Jane, Jackie and Mickey there? They clearly didn’t go through any extensive vetting process, they just threw them in with the rest of them because they were prisoners.
      Also, we see the precise process by which they selected people for testing; by street. They’d go to a street, demand all the residents leave and take them to the Crucible. Sylvia even says that they were leaving the Nobles’ street alone. So it was very clearly a random and indiscriminate process determined to gather groups of humans quickly for testing...before killing them all...indiscriminately.
      That’s like saying if the Wehrmacht had captured the French President before France surrendered, he had to be let go because France hasn’t surrendered yet.
      It’s utterly incoherent.
      Their aim is to annihilate all life, regardless of the consequences, and one of the consequences would certainly have been the complete trashing of the Laws of Time...so why would it care? The Dalek knew that Davros wanted to destroy all reality, and all life, so why would this girl’s survival for a couple more hours have changed anything?
      And what’s more, it’s evident that the humans and Daleks have some level of conflict in the future, because they became a spacefaring Empire. I doubt the Daleks had any trouble in any case but if Adelaide was so important to human space travel, it makes far more sense for that Dalek to desecrate the timelines and prevent the Dalek-Human wars from ever happening.
      Also, how would that act contradict the Emperor’s plan? Worst case scenario; The Dalek kills Adelaide and humans never become a spacefaring race. The Emperor could still harvest the “prisoners, the refugees, the dispossessed,” with no problems.
      That would make his subjugation of Earth easier, not impossible. But that would be taking into account the fact that Davros’ plan fucks over the Emperor so much.
      ALSO, why would a Dalek entertain thoughts of failure or the “safe side” for a second? Their arrogance is rivalled only by their xenophobia, and there is no way they would ever have considered the fact that the Reality Bomb would fail. Dalek Sec was deposed and murdered just because he suggested they weren’t perfect lol.
      And even if it had, as Rose’s Doctor says, this Dalek Empire is big enough to slaughter the cosmos regardless, so Adelaide would have died either way so the Dalek’s refusal to kill her really just makes no sense.
      But as I said, it’s a nearly flawless episode but there is no way you will ever be able to get this to make sense, because it just doesn’t.

    • @matth1589
      @matth1589 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, would Davros tell a "foot" soldier what he his grand plan was? One thing that has always been depicted in Dr Who is that there are some events that even Time Lords stay away from. An ordinary Dalek might be much like a regular human soldier. There are just going to be times where they are just going to walk away and let something be someone else's problem.
      Who knows, maybe it saw a juicier target and was planning to come back and kill the girl later. The Doctor is just guessing after all. The girl perceived it as this hugely significant event, but the Dalek may just have thought, "That one can wait, I'm going to exterminate this lot first.
