    This special was an absolute clinic on expectation subversion. "The laws of time are mine and they will OBEY ME!" gets us revved up like "Yeah, the Doctor is going to save the day again!" But then that ending, when she asked "Is there nothing you can't do?" and he gives us that dark, quiet, and chilling "Not anymore."

    One of the finest episodes of Doctor Who ever made.
    In a few minutes it makes you care deeply about the fate of characters you have only just met. Some TV shows don't manage this over the course of multiple seasons.

    As someone who grew up watching NuWho every week, this was the first episode that I couldn't make it through the first time. The Flood is so creepy and it's just really sad. I remember having to leave the room in tears, and it was only by watching it again a few years ago that I was able to appreciate this episode. It will forever be one of the scariest villains, and the culmination of all the Doctors' flaws throughout the show is really heartbreaking to watch now that he doesn't have anyone "someone to stop [him]". Specifically, Mr Copper saying "if you could decide who lives and who dies, that would make you a monster" in voyage of the damned and Martha saying that "he never asks to be thanked" in Last of the Time Lords. It also adds a new dimension to the moment in Dalek, when Rose asks "What about you, Doctor? The hell are you changing into?"

    Easily one of my favourite episodes of Doctor Who ever. Simply incredible on every level. My only wish is that we got to see a bit more of The Time Lord Victorious somehow, as like a sort of anti-hero version of the Doctor. Would have been fascinating. Oh, and I also wish that the score for this episode would have been officially released!
    The flood are a terrifying villain, and one of the coolest bits of simple yet effective practical effects on this show. The makeup on the cracked facial features was really good, and they threaded hoses through the actors costumes to dispense the water.

    This episode taps into the secret darkness within the doctor himself

  • @TheCourtsOfLove
    @TheCourtsOfLove ปีที่แล้ว +17

    This episode was really sad at the end, the Doctor unintentionally set the human race back Miles because he was there with Adelaide, it just shows how easy the Doctor can slip into the antagonistic role even though he doesn't want to, it's why he needs a companion always to prevent the ruthless side from showing, the God Complex - Because Adelaide survived at Earth, her granddaughter would never be inspired and completely changed the whole future of space development and humans reaching further into the universe, sending it way back. And so she killed herself, taking the future in her own hands to correct the Doctor's mistake and her death still allowed her granddaughter to fortunately still be inspired by Adalaide to go into space and all the events of the lightspeed ship and a new species happened because of her death. David Tennant killed it at the end when the Doctor realized his actions actually done harm and his statement about "Is it my time?!" not wanting to die with his final action being one of harm because he changed a fixed-point.
    This episode really had the feels and it also showed that (Going back to the Pompeii) episode, actions like that can have repercussions and it's why the Doctor didn't want to save the family as Pompeii was being destroyed cause he ultimately ended up causing the eruption, sometimes playing God doesn't make you invincible (This God-Complex goes right back to S1 with Blon the Slitheen mentioning "Playing with so many lives you might as-well be a God.")
    It was a great episode before the true finale of this season.

    "What am I watching?" you asked. The answer is 'Handlebars': th-cam.com/video/ly-Vhw1fevM/w-d-xo.html (possibly the greatest Doctor Who video/edit ever, which _predicted_ Waters of Mars)
    I remember when this episode first aired and the whole of fandom was basically just shouting 'Handlebars'! Also, friend of mine (one of the creators of the Verity podcast) said this about Ten after Human Nature/Family of Blood aired - it is a character trait that people noticed and talked about:
    "Now, to the meat, the gristle in the teeth, the I TOLD YOU SO moment of the show - the Doctor's treatment of The Family. I've said over and over again that this Doctor is much darker, almost unhinged and probably slightly sociopathic than Nine ever could hope to be. We are starting to see the overt manifestation of "no second chances" and my god, is it _delicious_. I get the impression he's trembling on the knife-point of completely losing control and the cracks in his facade are widening. It's starting to pile up - Gallifrey, the loss of his people, his companions, his friends and if he doesn't let it out and deal then the meltdown will be of nuclear proportions. There was a line in the BBC7 audio "Phobos" where he kills an empathetic species with an overload of his memories and thoughts. What finally kills isn't what he's done, or what he's afraid of, it's what he's capable of doing. I think a full-out Time Lord meltdown would bring down galaxies and that's always lurking just below the surface with this Doctor. His choice of *justice* for The Family went beyond punishment. It was vindictive and cruel. He knows the curse of immortality and the pain of being separated from your people yet he cruelly condemns The Family to that very fate. It crossed a line and I don't think he particularly cares. He just seems so tired of losing what little he clings to over and over again. I don't know how he can come back from this and fall back into the happy-go-lucky scamp mode that a good chunk of fandom seems to prefer. "
    tl;dr - Thank you for a _great_ reaction! Hope you don't mind the wall of text, but Ten is _complicated_ and it's worth digging into.

    I always hated how easily this 'fixed point in time' could have been avoided. The fixed event was the destruction of the Mars base, it was utterly destroyed, big mystery The whole crew was presumed dead because they never returned. If the Doctor had just scooped them up into the TARDIS and taken them to the far future, a quiet, peaceful life in a time when no one would know, or care, or believe their old identities, the fixed point would be preserved, and everyone could live. Instead, we get a heavy handed 'villain arc' swerve that ends as abruptly as it begins. I get the point of it, I get the idea of his building loneliness leading him to darker paths, but.. bleehhh I wish it was managed more craftfully.
