  • In this video I discuss my new film camera purchase, the Mamiya C330 medium format film camera. I decided to put 5 rolls of Portra 400 through the camera in 5 days to help myself become accustomed to the functionality of the camera and see exactly what it can do.
I show a few of my favourite photos that I managed to take over the 5 days, discuss my initial impressions of the camera itself and also talk a little bit more about my inspiration for getting a 6x6 medium format camera in the first place, in particular, the mamiya C330.

Flying 4 Film thanks! I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the camera. I’m now already eyeing up a mamiya RZ67 too when finds allow! The c330 is a great camera though, I’d highly recommend it.

Great video. Yes Vivian Maier was something else, leaving such a legacy of brilliant photos. She had courage too, shooting in some of the roughest area of NYC.
I own the 80mm and 135mm, and just after ordering the 55mm to complete the wide-standard-short telephoto set.
    Cracking cameras.

I purchased my first Mamiya C330 Professional in 1971 and have augmented it with a Mamiya C330-S. They are wonderful cameras and your review certainly do them justice!

Great video Tom plus beautiful shots. Love the colors. I just got my C220 last week. Shot my forst roll of kodak bw400. Picking up the negatives tomorrow. Super excited. Funnily enough, that Vivian Mayer documentary also had a lot to do with my choice to buy it and start shooting 6x6.

Thanks Michel, I do really love the 6x6 format. Something very nostalgic about it. These cameras are perfect for black and white and I tend to find myself preferring that look from these older (but still sharp) lenses. Enjoy!

I picked up one recently and brought a few lenses as well. Haven’t had a chance to use it yet. I ended up picking up a few hasselblads 500cms. I had the yashica mat and a rolleiflex 3.5 some years ago. But I got rid of them. I really like the Mamiya concept where you can change lenses. They really gave though to that tlr when it was built.

I picked up one myself recently- interesting to see you opened the back by pressing the side dial; mine has a little thing on the back itself to open it up.

Interesting video. In the brief period that I shot weddings, in Southend, I managed to leave a soft focus filter on the taking lens off a Mamiya TLR for a whole wedding. Luckily the couple loved the pics.

@@Tom-Humble they can work well 😎 my error was using the TLR meant I could not see the filter was still on because I was looking through the top lens, I felt pretty daft. Switched to Hasselblads after that.

I have both the Pentax 645 and the C330F. Two different beasts. The Pentax is great for snap shooting on the street plus the additional negatives you get with 645. The C330f is more akin to a large format camera in as much it is totally manual, larger and more thoughtful in its use. I routinely shoot either Tri-X or HP5 and love the way the images come out. Both are great cameras, just different purposes

I've just bought the older brother of this, the C3. Of course, it's rained for two day since I put the first roll in so I have so far taken a whole TWO frames. It's a bit strange for me using the Fresnel, but I hope to get used to it. I already shoot digital to crop square sometimes, so actually having a square format is really exciting.

I shot with a C330 professionally from 1970 to 1985, still miss it. Stick with it, it will improve your photography no end. Your idea of local street portraiture sounds great, good luck.

Why is the Rolleiflex 2.8 “infamous”?
    infamous adjective
    in·fa·mous | \ ˈin-fə-məs
    Definition of infamous
1: having a reputation of the worst kind : notoriously evil an infamous traitor
2: causing or bringing infamy : DISGRACEFUL an infamous crime
3: convicted of an offense bringing infamy
